Richt says he hasn’t been approached by Miami, ‘absolutely’ plans to stay at UGA

(Updated 6 p.m.)

Georgia coach Mark Richt said late this afternoon that he has not been approached about the coaching job at Miami, his alma mater, and that he “absolutely” expects to remain the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

South Florida newspapers today mentioned Richt among possible candidates for the Miami opening that was created with Saturday night’s firing of coach Randy Shannon. Earlier this month, the Denver Post reported that Colorado would like to speak with Richt about its coaching vacancy.

“I’ve got the same answer for [the Miami speculation] as I had for the other one: Georgia is my home, and it’s where I want to finish my career,” Richt said.

Pressed on whether he would entertain the possibility of the Miami job if approached, Richt replied: “Just like I’ve been saying, man, Georgia’s my home, and that’s where I want to be. I don’t think you’ve got to go any farther than that.”

The Miami Herald today listed Richt among “potential candidates” to replace Shannon. The Palm Beach Post listed Richt among “possible replacements.”

The speculation was not surprising. Richt is a graduate of Miami, where he played quarterback under coach Howard Schnellenberger. Richt is 96-33 in 10 seasons as Georgia’s coach.

When the Miami job last was open after the 2006 season, Richt was mentioned as a possible candidate before immediately saying he was not interested.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has said Richt will return as the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

Richt, who fired three assistant coaches in the week following last year’s victory over Georgia Tech, was asked today if he is considering staff changes now. He said he is not.

He expressed support for offensive coordinator and play caller Mike Bobo.

“If I’m not mistaken, we broke some kind of school record with [seven] consecutive games of over 30 points, and a lot of really good things happened offensively,” Richt said. “The bottom line is whoever calls plays is going to get critiqued, going to get criticized. It’s just the nature of the beast.”

I bet the collective IQ ,of the people wanting CMR to leave, is about 6. You people are pathetic and don’t deserve Richt as the coach of this team. What coach do you think would want to come here if UGA got rid of a coach with Richt’s winning percentage and class. I am a UGA fan(and employee), but this man does not deserve the trash being spewed his way by so-called fans and so-called football experts. And just a warning to those who would speak negatively about his faith, you really don’t want to go there! Go DAWGS!

These other teams that inquire about Coach Richt’s availability know the value of a good coach while the neer do well fair weather fans that claim to be Bulldog fans just show their ignorance and stupidity. UGA coach is on the mark. Leave him alone finks. Have a great day.

Take the job, Richt

Richt will quickly announce he is not interested, as he did with Colorado and with Miami in 2006 because he knows no serious offer from a major NCAA team is ever going to come his way and he does not want the disgrace of being passed over. UGA is stuck with him. Welcome to a decade of mediocrity with the possibility of one good team in 30 years (can you say Vince Dooley). That is the hallowed UGA tradition.

Keep Bobo on as QB coach, he has done a great job developing Murray. But as far as playcalling, he is far too inconsistant to be reliable. We have to find a big time offensive coordinator. If CMR wants to keep his job then he knows that he has to get a new OC. He did the right thing by letting Martinez go, and he can’t wussy out about demoting Bobo.

Does anyone really think that Richt would make a step up going to UM? There’s no way he takes over a mid-level ACC team.

Coffee Bluff…..

vs. staying at a mid level SEC team that barely could beat a low level ACC team? I think, once Richt is approached about the Miami job and takes a close look at the talent assembled at Miami as well as the HS talent in the area he can recruit…..he is gone to sunny south Florida. And Georgia can go up to Knoxville and hire away another Dooley. I think that would be a good move for Richt and the Dawgs…and you would be getting one of the best, young coaches in America out of Knoxville.

Miami doesn’t want a coach who can’t beat the Gators once every seven years, which eliminates Richt and Bobby Bowden coming out of retirement, Phil Fulmer, Ray Goff, and the list goes on and on….

I don’t think he will go unless pushed. I do think he thinks of Athens as home and would like to end there. His overall record is great and Florida shows that poor seasons are possible even with very good Coaches. He has a very good class coming in and a quarterback that will just get better & better. Why go?

There are going to be a lot of “p-off’d” Gators coming into next year…hopefully with Jordan Reed or Jeff Driskell at QB, an innovative OC hired to replace the brain dead Steve Addazio, and Randy Shannon added to the staff as the Assistant HC in charge of the defense and lead recruiter for south Florida. I can dream too.

The Gators are looking for an assistant head coach in charge (overall) of the defense….with “Mac” leaving for North Texas as the HC….and Randy Shannon would fill that job nicely. Would get Florida big time into South Florida recruiting as well. I hope Meyer has already made the call.

Hey Tampa Gator,
It wasn’t all Addazio’s fault, Johnny Brantley looked like a deer looking at headlights, held the ball longer than and locked onto one reciever like Doug Johnson did. Driskel is the ticket and should take the reins and run with it with Burton and Reed mixed in occasionaly while Brantley holds the PAT!!!!!!!!!
Shannon won’t go to G’ville cause he could never shake Urban’s hand!!!!!!!!

Interesting the amount of people wanting to hang onto Grantham as the Def coor assuming next year will be better. I have not seen anybody on the UGA D that really gets it. No one wants to make a tackle, prefering to look for a blocker to play tiddly winks with. I hold Grantham accountable for our poor effort. We may not be that tallented on D but “want to” goes along way and Grantham is in charge of playing time and motivation. I am pretty certain i could field a better D with more “want to” just from 1 dorm at UGA ( probably Russell.) I believe Richt is Grantham’s boss. Richt looks good with a tan.

@ Rainbow Dawg Money is no problem at UGA when the top 5 or 6 contributors decide its time for a change its done. Thats how it work The AD has nothing to do with it. What coaches make is very little to these people they each give 5 to 10 times CMR money yearly. they run the program

The one thing Richt could do at Meeami is win easier, the All Coast Clear conf has no competition, recruiting Miami kids, kids in Trailerhassee, and then the inroads he’s made here in state, plus if he takes the recruiting cordinating whiz with him, just saying, easier to win in ACC then in SEC….
