(Updated 6 p.m.)
Georgia coach Mark Richt said late this afternoon that he has not been approached about the coaching job at Miami, his alma mater, and that he “absolutely” expects to remain the Bulldogs’ coach next season.
South Florida newspapers today mentioned Richt among possible candidates for the Miami opening that was created with Saturday night’s firing of coach Randy Shannon. Earlier this month, the Denver Post reported that Colorado would like to speak with Richt about its coaching vacancy.
“I’ve got the same answer for [the Miami speculation] as I had for the other one: Georgia is my home, and it’s where I want to finish my career,” Richt said.
Pressed on whether he would entertain the possibility of the Miami job if approached, Richt replied: “Just like I’ve been saying, man, Georgia’s my home, and that’s where I want to be. I don’t think you’ve got to go any farther than that.”
The Miami Herald today listed Richt among “potential candidates” to replace Shannon. The Palm Beach Post listed Richt among “possible replacements.”
The speculation was not surprising. Richt is a graduate of Miami, where he played quarterback under coach Howard Schnellenberger. Richt is 96-33 in 10 seasons as Georgia’s coach.
When the Miami job last was open after the 2006 season, Richt was mentioned as a possible candidate before immediately saying he was not interested.
Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has said Richt will return as the Bulldogs’ coach next season.
Richt, who fired three assistant coaches in the week following last year’s victory over Georgia Tech, was asked today if he is considering staff changes now. He said he is not.
He expressed support for offensive coordinator and play caller Mike Bobo.
“If I’m not mistaken, we broke some kind of school record with [seven] consecutive games of over 30 points, and a lot of really good things happened offensively,” Richt said. “The bottom line is whoever calls plays is going to get critiqued, going to get criticized. It’s just the nature of the beast.”

@ Joe B.
I admire your commitment to your team and know it is hard to see them struggle but do you really want to take a chance with a new face who you will not know about until 3 or 4 years in because you will truly see his players by then?

And for the Newton haters. Lets appreciate a good player when we see one. He had a good year and plays with passion in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. Give credit where credit is due.

I think the college football gods know that if there was a college play off system it would be dominated year in and year out by the mighty titan teams of the SEC. I suppose one of the other conferences would have a team that would have a good day and make it through the gauntlet but mostly it would be an SEC team.

I’m honestly surprised by all the negativity towards Richt. He’s had 3 bad seasons in 10 at UGA. How many did Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden have at their schools. The team is headed in the right direction. The defense needs to get better but you have a very good QB and TE, and O-line. Def will get better next year with more experience in the scheme. If Richt goes so do a lot of the good recruits UGA has coming in next year. If he had a bad year next year then I could understand all the arguments to fire him. Losing Richt now would do more harm than good. Not every next coach is better than his replacement, most are not.

You people are NUTS!!! If I were CMR, I would not want to stick around, where I am constantly bashed. Folks, he can coach, but he is NOT the ones making the lousy plays. I think he should stay and take over play-calling, if BoBo stays let him do something else.

Teams should not be penalized for playing a tough nonconference schedule. They are afraid if they lose it will hurt BCS chances. Why take that chance?

First, no official at the University of Miami has said that Mark Richt is a candidate for the UM job. That was just some writer from the Miami Herald throwing out a few names because it’s his job to write a sports blog. Secondly, all of the Richt supporters who think that Richt can just settle in because he has a lifetime estate in athens as the coach of Georgia are dead wrong. McGarity came from UF and he has said that he wants the football program competing at a championship level and this program has slid big time in the last few years. If Richt has another season next year like he did this year then he probably will be fired. So if the UM does come calling then Richt will have something to really think about. If he stays and can’t turn it around then he is out of a job and will have lost a chance to coach Miami and recruit some big time talent. This is a real scenario to ponder.

As a fan of the U why would we even think of considering your wimpy coach. If the U is trying to return to its glory days of old Richt definetly not a part of those plans. They might as well had kept the soft spoken Shannon he shows more life than Richt. I see now why your fans go crazy on these posts , you guys write some looney stuff. Mark Richt? I’d rather have Lou Holtz come out of retirement, Richt is so soft, the waterboys will run the practices !

Hummon, I can beleive the lack of respect and appreciation. Look at what Bobby Bowden did for FSU, Fulmer at Tenn., Penn. State is calling for Papa Joe to resign,. Football fans are the most fickle idiots in the world. Especally UGA fans. They’ve got all the answers (they think). UGA fans think all the big coach names are gonna line up at the personal office when a vacancy comes. I know CMR makes alot of money. Thats because after he had good teams in 2 years all these know it all fans say give him more money before another school hires him away. If he doesn’t win the SEC 5 seasons out of 6 and the National Champ. 2 or 3 times in 5 years they start holling at the moon. “our play calling stinks, fire this coach, fire that coach. And so it goes. Its almost funny.

It saddens me to see that UGA has the fanbase that it has. I can’t believe that there is such negativity towards CMR. Granted, he has been on a slide for the past three years.
Being a Georgia fan, I must admit that we are not the Championship caliber that most of think our team should be. I make no excuses for anyone, but most of the idiots that blog don’t know what a trap block or swing pass in the flat is. We listen to what is being said and pile on.
Okay, let’s get a new coach next year. What will happen in three years when this coach can’t seem to win a National Championship. Most of you blogging idiots will be out for his head to. I can remember when CMR was the toast of the town. Let’s go back even further. I can remember when Jim Donnan was the toast of the town for a quick minute.
Change is Good…..but choose when you change wisely. Just because things aren’t going good now, they could always get worse.

Are you UGA fans nuts, are you thinking about your posts before you type them? You guys are on here making excuses about the playcalling & it is not Richt’s fault, why the hell do you think Shannon lost his job. When you are the head coach at a major university you are ultimately responsible for every single aspect of that team, that is why they pay you the big cheddar. The ” U ” will be back & Richt is not in it’s future so stop crying.

Be careful what you wish for? You got it. What I wish for then is to have a better record than 6-6 (all the while with a boat load of talent), and I wish for a better record than 2-8 over 10 years against our biggest rival, Florida. I was very careful and I will go out on a limb and say another coach could have done much better. And you know how I can tell with absolute certainty? With those kind of pathetic numbers, a new coach could not have done much worse! Unless of course they went 1-9 against Florida, and started losing to Idaho State and Louisiana Lafayette.

First of all I admit I am an Auburn fan. Therefore, all of you Harvard grads can condemn my opinion. At the end of the Auburn-Georgia game as we all know a fight broke out. Gene Chizik at that time sent a coach out to get Nick Fairley off the field. Also, at the same time he made it clear to the rest of the team to stay off the field. Mark Richt on the other hand played Civil War general and allowed his men to charge the field. At that time he was telling his team to get back. but at that time they were already on the field. I have heard that going onto the field during a fight can lead to suspension for the next game. Had the SEC enforced that rule Georgia would have been short 32 players for the Tech game. All the people say Auburn is a bunch of Thugs. However, it seems to me Chizik can control his Thugs better than Richt.

It doesn’t matter if CMR goes to Miami or not. Either way the Bulldogs will just keep getting worse and worse. It is you inability to accept responsibility for your own loses that does it. Compare and contrast: UGA loses because they got outplayed by Auburn and UGA fans and CMR complain and whine that Auburn played “dirty.” Because of all UGA’s whining, Auburn’s Fairley gets called for an unfair excessive celebration penalty in the next game. When asked if he blamed the officials, Chizak said “I never blame the officials, we have to take care of that.” That is why Auburn is undefeated and UGA is praying for a bowl invitation.

Hey Mark: Miami just fired a coach with a 7-5 record. Miami’s facilities are among the worst in the ACC and they play in a stadium halfway to Ft. Lauderdale. This would NOT be a lateral move. Not in today’s college football world. Stay put!

Hey AT: If you are going to blog at least know what you are talking about– which you DO NOT! Nick Fairley has been playing dirty all year (ask Arkansas,) just no SEC ref had the guts to do something about him– including the refs in the Auburn game. Any good referee would have ejected him. Stick to whatever you know– which obviously is NOT CFB.
