(Updated 6 p.m.)
Georgia coach Mark Richt said late this afternoon that he has not been approached about the coaching job at Miami, his alma mater, and that he “absolutely” expects to remain the Bulldogs’ coach next season.
South Florida newspapers today mentioned Richt among possible candidates for the Miami opening that was created with Saturday night’s firing of coach Randy Shannon. Earlier this month, the Denver Post reported that Colorado would like to speak with Richt about its coaching vacancy.
“I’ve got the same answer for [the Miami speculation] as I had for the other one: Georgia is my home, and it’s where I want to finish my career,” Richt said.
Pressed on whether he would entertain the possibility of the Miami job if approached, Richt replied: “Just like I’ve been saying, man, Georgia’s my home, and that’s where I want to be. I don’t think you’ve got to go any farther than that.”
The Miami Herald today listed Richt among “potential candidates” to replace Shannon. The Palm Beach Post listed Richt among “possible replacements.”
The speculation was not surprising. Richt is a graduate of Miami, where he played quarterback under coach Howard Schnellenberger. Richt is 96-33 in 10 seasons as Georgia’s coach.
When the Miami job last was open after the 2006 season, Richt was mentioned as a possible candidate before immediately saying he was not interested.
Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has said Richt will return as the Bulldogs’ coach next season.
Richt, who fired three assistant coaches in the week following last year’s victory over Georgia Tech, was asked today if he is considering staff changes now. He said he is not.
He expressed support for offensive coordinator and play caller Mike Bobo.
“If I’m not mistaken, we broke some kind of school record with [seven] consecutive games of over 30 points, and a lot of really good things happened offensively,” Richt said. “The bottom line is whoever calls plays is going to get critiqued, going to get criticized. It’s just the nature of the beast.”

Dawg fans continue to amuse me. Celebrating a win over an equally bad 6-6 acc tech team. Glad you guys have such low standards. When AU wins the national title this year UGA will be the one team amongst the big 6 programs of the SEC to not win a bcs title and not win a national title since we went to the 2 division format.
Since going to the 2 division format Fla. has won 3 titles, Bama 2, LSU 2, UT 1, AU will win one this year and should have played in 04 but got left out. And then there is poor ole Georgia. Pathetic.

The only positive to leaving UGA for Miami is that its his alma mater….no other reason exists. The facilites at UM aren’t that great and they play 45 minutes north of campus in a half empty stadium. Its a very small private school with a limited number of alumni and fanbase. I think its more of a challenge to get UGA back to where they were than take the UM job. Just a couple years ago, we were on the brink of challenging for a BCS title. If he can turn this thing around that would be way more impressive than anything at UM. UM was dominant when they were independent and in the Big East. That isn’t true anymore.

Good comments.
Bobo’s main fault in this game was trying to run clock, early 4th, when it was obvious we couldn’t establish run & obvious Tech couldn’t stop passing game.
Same idea in Auburn game knowing you can’t stop them, you must keep foot on gas.
The defense scheme was week this year. If players not there to succeed in 3-4,should have waited till Spring to implement.

Wait until Spring to implement the 3-4 defense? You must surely have coached many games with this mentality! Totally ignorant statement.

I am amused by all the idiots who want Coach Richt gone. Aren’t you the same bozos calling for Coach Martinez’s head last year. Coach Richt is an awesome person and coach. Most of yall probably sell shoes at the mall and probably wouldn’t recognize a zone blitz if it bit you in the leg.

It would be best for all involved if Coach Richt moved on to Miami.
He knows that next year will likely be his last in Athens, anyway, and he has lost control and respect within the program, which can never be gotten back.
The knowledgeable UGA fans realize that this program will never again be successful under Richt, but there are so many sidewalk fans that are blind loyalists, that firing him will be emotionally painful.
The ideal scenario would be for Richt to quietly head out to Coral Gables and let UGA start over.

whats everyone beef with mike bobo and mark richt , we have a great offense , why are we not jumping down granthams throat , we have scored lots of points in many games this season – but we got the raw end of the deal when we hired grantham . good lord , plus i’d rather have a coach with ethics , and mark richt is a great man / coach . and don’t go there about all the arrest this season —– coaches are not baby sitters , players need to grow up and act like adults .

I for one do not want MR to leave, but I am TIRED of watching teams like Ga. Tech run up and down the field at will, and the Dawgs having to score 40 plus points to win. They lost every game this year that they scored less than 40 in. So much for the zone blitz.

If you were a decent coach, you would realize it is unwise to put in a new scheme on short notice, without the type of players to make it succeed.
I suppose you think they had a better year with 3-4, than if they had stayed in 4-3.

Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 96% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with Adams and his cronies knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.
Get rid of Richt now.

Please keep CMR at UGAg. Miami has enough problems without needing CMR to coach them down. Keep CMR at UGAg so the butt-sniffers can stay mired in mediocrity. Yeah, you beat my Jackets yesterday. A supposedly inferior team with admittedly less talent ran your sorry a$$ defense up and down the field.

Please, explain your rationale. Some of us think that those who defend Richt are idiots, and we have the last 3 years to use as evidence.
Please tell us about what a great man Coach Richt it. We already know that, but unfortunately, he is not running a charity mission. His job is to win football games, and he is no longer capable of doing that.

daddydog,
Again you have NO clue what you are talking about! The 3 4 WAS put in last Spring! And worked on since the day Grantham was hired. Now if you want to say that Georgia should have kept the old DC and the 4 3 defense then by all means say that but again your comments are IGNORANT. After I reread your comment back to me I know I am trying to make a point to someone who has NO clue about football. When would you implement the defense that the DC was hired to run? Maybe in a year or two? You say stupid stuff!

I think Richt is a good coach overall, and he showed last year that he is willing to make changes. I like Granthams D, it hasn’t been great this year, but I can see the potential. We gotta give him some time to recruit players to fit the scheme and teach up the players so they execute it better. We have to get a big, dominating DT this offseason, maybe a JUCO guy. THats what will make this defense work
and Richt, please, GET A NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Yeah go ahead and let Richt go he only has the best winning percentage of any UGA coach in history. Be careful what you wish for. You have one of the best coaches right now. He has brought you 2 SEC titles but I guess that does not mean anything. Football fans with now clue. What a waste.
