Richt says he hasn’t been approached by Miami, ‘absolutely’ plans to stay at UGA

(Updated 6 p.m.)

Georgia coach Mark Richt said late this afternoon that he has not been approached about the coaching job at Miami, his alma mater, and that he “absolutely” expects to remain the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

South Florida newspapers today mentioned Richt among possible candidates for the Miami opening that was created with Saturday night’s firing of coach Randy Shannon. Earlier this month, the Denver Post reported that Colorado would like to speak with Richt about its coaching vacancy.

“I’ve got the same answer for [the Miami speculation] as I had for the other one: Georgia is my home, and it’s where I want to finish my career,” Richt said.

Pressed on whether he would entertain the possibility of the Miami job if approached, Richt replied: “Just like I’ve been saying, man, Georgia’s my home, and that’s where I want to be. I don’t think you’ve got to go any farther than that.”

The Miami Herald today listed Richt among “potential candidates” to replace Shannon. The Palm Beach Post listed Richt among “possible replacements.”

The speculation was not surprising. Richt is a graduate of Miami, where he played quarterback under coach Howard Schnellenberger. Richt is 96-33 in 10 seasons as Georgia’s coach.

When the Miami job last was open after the 2006 season, Richt was mentioned as a possible candidate before immediately saying he was not interested.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has said Richt will return as the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

Richt, who fired three assistant coaches in the week following last year’s victory over Georgia Tech, was asked today if he is considering staff changes now. He said he is not.

He expressed support for offensive coordinator and play caller Mike Bobo.

“If I’m not mistaken, we broke some kind of school record with [seven] consecutive games of over 30 points, and a lot of really good things happened offensively,” Richt said. “The bottom line is whoever calls plays is going to get critiqued, going to get criticized. It’s just the nature of the beast.”

I’m sick and tired of these “you’re not a Dawg fan if..” posts. We’re all Dawg fans, we just think there are different ways to get to where we should be. Stop attacking each other and focus of what needs to be done: change the attitude, recruiting, conditioning, playcalling, off-field troubles. If this requires a coaching change, then so be it. We all want to be playing in Atlanta the first weekend in December, so let’s find the right way to get there together.

Again, for those who don’t understand, Coach Bobo is NOT one of the Top 10 offensive coordinators in the country, and if we want to be there again, we need an upgrade. Yes, we have scored a lot of points in the last half of the season. The PROBLEM is that we are PREDICTABLE with our play calling and that we STRAY from what is working. A good offense, like in anything else, has to MAXIMIZE its STRENGTHS and overcome its weaknesses. One more time — in the 1st half, we threw 14 times and shredded Tech’s secondary. 2nd half — we threw 5 times and ran inconsistently. Tech NEVER stopped our passing game. WE stopped our own offense by abandoning our passing game! Yes, running some clock to keep Tech’s offense off the field would have been nice, but our running game is NOT very good on a consistent basis. Again, IF we had an SEC-caliber (or Conference USA caliber) defense, we could afford bogging down offensively. BUT, we DON’T. We have to go into every game with a plan to OUT SCORE our opponents. Bobo does not call games that way. We got lucky that 42 was enough to win, and some of those were points due to Tech’s turnovers. Bobo is TOO PREDICTABLE and TOO WILLING TO ABANDON WHAT IS WORKING WELL……. Keep Coach Richt, and get rid of Van Hallenger, who is killing us with our conditioning. Van Hallenger’s a bigger issue than Bobo, even. Go Dawgs…!

Upon further review , the”U” will more than likely pass on CMR ,he is just too expensive. CMR wiil not leave any money on the table. UGA is obligated to pay him more than he can make in 5 years at Miami and the odds are he would be long gone before he finishes his first contract at the”U”.CMR is smart he knows if things don’t turn around he can get his buyout and get another coaching job better than the one at Miami. UGA is stuck with CMR lets hope that the new recruits and the redshirts are as good as advertised. The SEC east should be up for grabs next year ,a fast start may put all of the Dawgs back in contention for at least the SEC east title.Or another slow start and we are right back here next year blogging about a new coach.

CTG needs to get the right personnal and we will do fine in the 3-4 but right now that is our achilles heal. On CMR I might be wrong but since he has stated multiple times that he wants to stay and coach at UGA …well yes we have heard this from others …but I do not think that Richt is two faced like other coaches. CMR has done great things for our University and I for one sure hope he is back next year.

The state of Georgia is a high school football factory and there should be no excuses for not winning.

I seriously doubt CMR is going anywhere until his contract is done. At that point he wants to go into a ministry. With that said I could not blame him at all for starting fresh at another major university and getting away from all of the negative know-it-all dawg fans. You know who I’m talking about. The people that write for & on these AJC blogs think that they know more about football than Richt. One guy last night even challenged Richt to a “coach only mode” video game. Who knew that playing a video game makes you a football expert? These are the same people that think they can call the Falcons offense better than Mike Mularkey. There is a reason you people sit at home and play video games instead of actually coaching real football.

Richt deserves time to fix the problems at Georgia. He deserves your support. The coach you all want just lost to Nevada after having a 24 point lead. Sound familiar?

My last comments on Bobo — yes, we scored plenty of points over the last half of the season. BUT, we leave opportunities on the field by not focusing on what is working WELL. It’s only one example of many, but against Tech we gave away opportunities by abandoning our passing game that was TORCHING Tech’s defense. We could have scored 50 and made the game a bit easier. We could not out score Auburn or Florida. We were inept offensively early in the season, and NOT just due to no AJ. Our play calling was weak in the first 5 games. To Bobo’s credit, he has cut down on the 2nd and 10 runs up the middle after an incomplete 1st down pass. Other than that, his playcalling still needs improvement. When did Tech stop AJ Green, Orson Charles, or Kris Durham? Answer: NEVER. WE did by abandoning the passing game that was shredding Tech. We got lucky………. UNTIL we have a good defense, we HAVE to score every single point possible — 30 wasn’t enough to beat Florida. 31 wasn’t enough to beat Auburn. That is Bobo’s key weakness….. we waste drives by abandoning what’s working best………

Yes, our defense stinks, and I think part of that may be addressed by recruiting for Grantham’s scheme. But, we will continue to be manhandled defensively and will continue to have an inconsistent offensive line until Van Hallenger is gone. When other members of his profession point out him refusing to keep up with what other teams are doing, he needs to change or be replaced….

Dawg fans, lets face facts here. CMR is’nt going anywhere. McGarity is’nt firing CMR. CMR did what he had to do to keep his job last night. He won. It was UGLY and statistically we lost that game, but when the clock read 00:00, UGA had more points on the board. Fan focus needs to be on what can change.
1. Bobo needs to go back to QBs and CMR needs to pick up a clip board again.
2. New Strength and Conditioning Staff
3. Dust off the 90’s “Charlie Ward” Style offense and impliment it into our ultra conservative
4. Grantham needs to impliment some aspects of the 4-3 when necessary.
5. (Should be 1st) Must have a top ten recruiting class. Stop losing the state’s top linemen to South Carolina and Auburn.

Next year’s schedule is setting up in CMR’s favor.
Boise State – CMR has all off season to prepare for them. No excuse for losing.
S. Carolina – they lose an awful lot of seniors, but its a toss up.
Coastal Carolina – Win
Ole Miss – Win
Miss State – at home, Dawgs should get revenge
UT – their program is still down, should be another win
Vandy – Win
Open
UF – 2 weeks to prepare, if Grantham has the Defense in sync we should win this game.

I’ve argued with several Dawg fans, who have become fair weather fans, this year.
Every one of them spoke of Richt’s ouster and I told them that they’d be getting rid of the coach,
who brought the SEC Championship back to UGA and, not only that, they would be giving Tech a wide open opportunity to take advantage of the new coach.

Well, yesterday, Richt’s team proved the UGA superiority over Tech, once again and I hope this will quell any demand to throw Rich out.

However, I’ll repeat (as I have, often, this year) IF RICHT GOES, MY DAYS OF BEING A DAWG FAN ARE OVER!
I can’t imagine going to become a GT fan, but I won’t even watch that game!!

KaliDogg

Hard to believe I’m saying this but, if you’ve watched the last few games closely (last night in particular) — and I’m sure you have or you wouldn’t all be on here — there is a difference between coaching and playing on the defensive side of the ball (on offense, I’d say a good bit of the execution is there — with the glaring exception of the hyped-to-heaven O-Line — not so on defense). How many times are players (not early in the year, but now) in a position to make a play but they can’t seem to do something as fundamental as tackle the man with the ball.

Just saying (and please, disagree) it seems like, on the D side of the ball, the scheme is there but the execution isn’t. If UGA could tackle when in position to make a tackle, GT would have run the ball for a lot of yardage — that’s what they do — but nothing like the debacle UGA produced last night. Time after time, it looks like the pitch is contained, only to have a UGA player try to spin off of a blocker while the runner sprints past him — intending to tackle with his back turned, apparently. Arm tackles? I don’t have a count but might run the game back, if I have time, to count them up.

And, it’s been the same all year. I know — that’s coaching, too — but it’s something that has to be ingrained in a team over a period of time.

So, I’m throwing my hat in there in favor of Mr. Grantham. I think he’s on the right track. But, we have to recruit defense hard, find a big body for the middle (which we might actually have on the roster already — we’ll see how that develops), and hammer getting off blocks and making tackles, a lot of which is actually footwork, which you can coach, and brains, which you can’t.

As for Mr. Richt. I don’t have the answer. I watch the elite programs and merely the demeanor of their head coaches on the sidelines and there’s an obvious difference but that’s hardly enough upon which to judge a coach. We all want to hold him accountable. Which we should. What I would like to see is him demanding accountability from his assistants. How can he continue to criticize the play calling on radio shows after games and not fix it. Who’s the head coach? I thought he was.

My guess is, he’s here and we’ll see next year, when Grantham’s had a year and we see what CMR does about Bobo. But, what do I know. I’m surprised every day in this business. Note 1: Miami just went 7-5 and fired their coach. Note2: UGA had far too much talent to be a missed GT extra point from a 50-50 shot at defeat last night. Out-coached all night.

KaliDogg -

I agree with you in part, but the scheme was all wrong last night. Grantham should have put 9 guys in the box including 5 down linemen. Putting our inside linebackers 5 yards off the ball created huge gaps for Tech to run through and PJ knew it and took advantage of it.

Here is the unvarnished truth. We have WOEFUL talent on defense. Our entire defensive front is not suited to play a 3-4. They’re not big enough and they’re no where close to being strong enough. With the exception of Akeem Dent, our linebackers are dreadful. None of them would play for Alabama. Ogeltree has promise, but needs more time more strength and more confidence. Boykin has played well all year long. The rest of the DBs are a total joke. Jakar “Hitman” Hamilton… LOL, my Grandmother could kick his arse.

Grantham promised an aggressive attacking defense, what we got was a whimpering cowering bunch of fools who would rather loaf than make a hit. Daryl Gamble, give me a break – he absolutely sucks.

The bullseye has got to be on Rodney Garner, because his time has come and gone. Let him go and pursue the Miami job. Our recruiting is slipping big time.
