Murray closing in on Stafford’s record for TD passes in a season

Did you realize that Aaron Murray, Georgia’s redshirt freshman quarterback, is on the verge of the all-time UGA record for touchdown passes in a season?

Murray’s three TD passes against Georgia Tech on Saturday night gave him 24 for the season — one shy of the UGA single-season record of 25 set by Matthew Stafford in 2008. Murray will have a chance to match and/or break Stafford’s record in Georgia’s bowl game.

With 24 TD passes, Murray currently is tied for second place in Georgia’s single-season record book with Eric Zeier (1993 and ‘94), D.J. Shockley (2005) and Joe Cox (2009).

Murray completed 15 of 19 passes for 271 yards against Tech, giving him 2,851 passing yards for the season. That’s the most ever by a Georgia freshman, topping David Greene’s 2,789 in 2001. And it’s the second most ever by an SEC freshman, behind only Jared Lorenzen’s 3,687 for Kentucky in 2000.

If not for the ultra-conservative play calling in the 4th quarter, Murray might have tied or taken the record in this game.

I actually think there is a good chance Murray plays four full seasons since he lacks the size of a prototypical NFL QB and might not get drafted in the first round no matter how good his stats are….don’t know if this is true and who konws if h will have a sophmore jinx next year, but the guy is tough, smart, and obviously talented……it will be nice to have him for at least two more seasons.

When it comes to td’s Murray’s been good. Oh if that were the only true measure of a QB. Murray is 6-6 as a starter.

I look to the “When it counts” areas to gauge whether a QB has the “it’ factor.

When it comes to passing accuracy in the red zone, 3rd downs, 1st quarter, 4th quarter, and 3rd and long, Murray’s among the worst in the NCAA in all 5.

We saw that again last night.

2 critical chokes on 4th & 1, and then the sack on 3rd and 1.

But he did play a good first half and had moments in the 3rd quarter when the pressure wasn’t on.

But the 4th quarter? Choked again.

1 completion, fumbled on a 4th & 1, almost lost the game.

Thank goodness Houston saved the day and wouldn’t let Murray lose this game, no matter how much Murray choked under pressure.

Murray excels in the kind of stats that don’t win ballgames. And he chokes in the stats that win games.

Marcus

November 28th, 2010
8:22 am

Also didn’t think putting the ball in Murray’s hands was smart on the other 4th & inches in the 3rd quarter. Would have liked to have seen Ealey there, since Ealey got 9 yards a carry. But Murray choked on that play too on the 5 yard line 4th & inches play. Most QB’s can pick up that. Cost Georgia another 7. Each of Murray’s 4th & 1 failed conversion cost Georgia 7 points, so 14 points lost, 21 gained with his arm.

Marcus, If you watched the replay you would have seen that Murray did not fumble that snap. The center never got the ball to him. And, even if he had, you are still a dingbat.

Marcus

November 28th, 2010
8:25 am

Murray is also 84th or 89th ranked in passing accuracy in the red zone, in the 4th quarter, and on 3rd downs. He chokes when it counts the most.

Marcus

November 28th, 2010
8:31 am

Mike Hartline of Kentucky matches Murray on td’s, AND win/loss record.

Both are 6-6.

Marcus

November 28th, 2010

Murray is also still ranked LAST in the NCAA on passing accuracy on 3rd and 10. Nobody does it worse, in the NCAA.

Marcus

November 28th, 2010
8:37 am

In short yardage, Ealey averages 3.2 ypc, and Murray averages .67. Bobo messed up on the 4th & 1 QB sneak call. The other 4th & 1 looked like a pitch to Ealey, which worked great the time earlier when they tired it, but Murray fumbled the snap. How many QB’s can botch BOTH 4th & 1’s? Unreal the way Murray plays when it doesn’t count, and how bad he chokes when it counts.

If I was an outstanding HS wide-receiver, I would want to come to GA. Green is gone. Count on it. Now GA needs outstanding wide-receivers to take the place of Green and Durham. They would be wise to come to Ga to have a QB that is going to be throwing all the time because Richt’s offenses tend to be 1 dimensional.

Murray is a winner and will prove that in the years to come. He is a freshman QB in the toughest conference in the US and still had an outstanding year behind an average line that played below average in too many games. He is a tough kid who never quit during the year and that deserves our respect and admiration.

Marcus

November 28th, 2010

Nice try, the O-Line is the #1 most experienced in the US with 155 starts, and the RB’s were in the top 5 in rushing over the last 5 game sin 09′ with Joe Cox calling the run audibles and threatening defenses with the deep ball.

With Murray, the same O-Line and RB’s went from #42 to #71 in the country, in 1 year.

At 6-6. can’t call Murray winner yet, doesn’t have a winning season yet.

Murray is also 0-6 when the other team scores first.

Hey Marcus, stats arent everything. I said before the season that if the Dawgs could gel on defense early enough they could go 11-1. I was wrong they sure could have done a lot better if old lady luck had been anywhere around. The only negative I have about next year is the play calling of Bobo. Marcus, What is your issue with murray? He is a freshman that has had a great year individually, and Georgia has been close to winning several more games. Lemay will not play until Murray leaves for the nfl or is knocked out of the game. You’re comparing hartline and murray, but murray is a redshirt freshman, and hartline is a senior, and they play in two very different offenses. Honestly the more posts you leave on here, the more you are looking like an idiot. Not a true Dawgs fan….

This marcus clown is a nutjob. Did you see that pass to Figgins in the endzone? Perfectlythron to exactly where it needed to be. And he knows Greene’s abilities and puts it exactly where it needs to be for him to make the catch out of the reach of the defense.

And anyone that qutes stats from a particular area as opposed to overall is an idiot. Quoting 3rd down only stats is pure stupidity. Thats like those moronic stats the analysts put out during games, like someone’s record during night games that occur on Thursdays with a full moon, the wind blowing from the east and the coach having a cold. Or even better, using baseball stats like a team coming back in the 9th inning. So what? It’s still a part of the game and the team still gets to use the downs or the outs. That is why they play the innin or the down. If it was done during any other down or inning it would count just as much.

Marcus, you are an idiot. Spouting meaningless stats does not make you a genius. It makes you stupid.

Hey Marcus, save it man…everyone knows that the reason UGA lost six games this year is NOT Aaron Murray.

There are many reasons, but the one question mark…can Murray get it done was actually our STRONG point all season long. He had a bad game against FLA, but he also GOT US BACK IN THE GAME.

If you really are a UGA fan (like you claim to be, but a troll more likely) then you will embrace Murray as one of our own, a Bulldog! Aaron Murray is a hard worker and is dedicated to the team and to the university man…did he steal your prom date or something? Why the hate towards this kid?

You wanna blame someone…the list is long…starting with the O-line, A.J (for getting suspended), Ealey and King for having fumbles in the worst times causing the team to lose games, the DEFENSE that couldn’t get a stop against ARK, FLA, AU or Colorado…and on and on.

Aaron Murray is the reason GA has won as many games as we have won this season…WITHOUT him we are probably a 2-3 win team.

Give the kid another season and watch…he’ll be as good as David Green (who had a COMPLETE team around him).

By contrast, Murray fights for every yard. Richt said he needed to slide when running the ball. I’ve seen him slide one time all year. He is all heart. You’ll never see him sit on the sideline, uninjured, smiling with Knowshon, like Stafford after the ‘08 UF drubbing.

As long as we have this throw, throw, throw mentality and not run the ball more to give the defense an opportunity to be fresh in the game, we will never win big again. If Ealey is such a good running back, why didn’t he understand the situation in the fourth quarter and take a knee inside the five? The only chance Tech had was based on getting the ball back.

Tech trailed by 1 with 90 some seconds left and one time out. A touchdown doesn’t close out the game due to the fact that Tech would go for a two point conversion. Let’s face it, the UGA defense wasn’t showing much ability to stop them.

A first down would allow UGA to control the ball and take a knee three times to end the game. No excitement but a win. Instead, Ealey carries for another touchdown (a personal stat) and and the defense has to take the field again, with the game on the line.

The first goal is to win the game. Marcus spews stats but few of them are meaningful regarding the individual. How many wins would the dawgs have this year without Murray? Who would have started in his place? Mason was number two but would Mason have been able to win 6? Marcus’ opinion is just that, and I don’t put much credence to it.

Murray is going to be outstanding in these next few years…now all we need is a running back to put up those same numbers..haha.

Marcus and Boweevil and Saint Simon are one and the same. If I was a big time recruit for UGA the comments that three stat spouting nerds of hate would make me think twice. If those three are really representive of true Bulldog fans I would never play for them. If I won 12 games, it would be, well you didn’t win 13 and the NC, so you are not good enough. Murray had the best freshman year of any Ga QB in it’s history. If you want to blame someone for some of UGA’s losses this year, blame the NCAA for the 4 game suspension they gave AJ. This was over-kill, for a similar offense Marcus Darius of Alabama got only 2 games off to think about what he had done wrong.
The 3 4 is maybe a good defense, but I believe it cost Ga the SC, Colo, Fla, Miss St, and Auburn games. We never could stop those teams running game and they controlled the clock and the scoreboard. The Arkansas game, we could not contain their QB he threw the ball to wide open receivers the whole game. Also the big advantage we were supposed to have was a returning OL, they had a terrible year, the running game was not there at all. After the win over Tech last year, Caleb King declared, “Ealey and I will both rush for over a Thousand yards in 010″. Both combined barely made this mark. Every body declares other teams are coming to GA and robbing the Dogs of the best talent and we are settling for second best. Ever since the Jan Kemp fracas I believe some of the best recruits are lured away by under the table deals. Like the Cam Newton saga, where there is smoke there is always a fire. His daddy was probaly smart enough to tell Auburn, give me the money by cash only, make no written records of it. I also believe the NCAA should never have allowed juniors to leave school early. The colleges recruit, the colleges train, the colleges spend millions to make there facilities state of the art to recruit the athelete to there school. The NFL should have to compensate a college when they sign juniors. Stafford and Moreno between them got better than 50 million dollars, what did UGA get last year, an 8 and 5 record. This year a 6 and 6 record. The best linebacker in the SEC was Renny Curran last year he left as a junior UGA missed his 140 plus tackles!

Marcus, or whatever name you use this week, is a fraud. He has had so many monikers on these comment sections, Roll Tide, BuLLdog, St. Simon, etc. but he has always the same theme. Bash Richt, bash Murray, trash anything good and positive about GA. Best to ignore this fool.

Murray has absolutely been the most amazing quarterback as a Freshman ever at QB. There is no reason not to feel his upside is quite high. Give Bobo credit with doing a great job in preparing him and bringing him along. For all of Bobo’s coordinator faults, the development of Murray is not one of those faults.

We have to keep in mind that we have scored over 30 points in the last 7 games, this is impressive. There is much work to be done in the off season and the development and recruitment of additional WR’s needs to be one of them. The offensive line needs to be reformed and the Strength of our players does come into question. Personally, another RB would be nice, but we have enough in the program for next year, if they stay out of trouble and the injury bug.

Our Defense needs a complete overhaul. The front line needs to be rebuilt, and the Juco route may be our only option. The secondary needs corners and safeties, this recruiting year. Grantham we all recognize did not have the players to play in his system. There should be no team that has an offense that scores 30 pts per game, but loses because of its D. Yes at times the D played well, but could not stop the run in key games, the wheel route, and the Safety play was atrocious.

Some of you have also questioned why Bobo only allowed him to throw 19 times in the game. Two reasons might be: Murray was injured more than we know, so as to not expose him to any additional pounding (he did run a few times), second might have been Bobo was having some success with Ealey.

Lemay isn’t going to be coming here…and as far as it goes, I don’t think anyone is going to be unhappy about it. Lemay is tainted goods and at a time when we have enough character issues with some of our players, I don’t think we need someone of Lemay’s questionable character. He is another Mettenberger waiting to happen.

I was as big a hater of Bobo as anyone over the last two years, but the playcalling has actually been pretty good this year. If we had even a mediocre offensive line (we arguably have the worst in the SEC, apparently experience =\= talent), we would have averaged close to 40 points a game this season.

The improvement on offense, couple with the 3-4 in year two next year (a year of significant improvment for that scheme, historically…see, e.g., Nick Saban at Bama), and I think things are looking great for the program next year, even without AJ or Houston.

Georgia’s inability to run the football effectively…. and NOTHING else….. is the reason for their poor red zone ranking.

Dude Murray is a FRESHMAN! He isnt expected to play like a harline or a newton. He has done a tremendous job considering he just came out of high school. The experience he gained this year will only benefit us in the long run. He is going to be a great QB. right now he is just learning to be one. But geez get off his back.

Marcus – Get a clue! With our truly pitiful O-line, Peyton Manning couldn’t be successful on 3rd and 10. It is tough to succeed passing when the defense is all over you and you’re running for your life.

You know… it’s amazing…All you dumb asses have been on these blogs since March talking down Murray…Talking about he’s too short to play the game…He doesn’t have a big arm…He’s too injury prone…He was going to drag the team down…Now all of you are on here kissing his ASS!!! If you guys we’re real fans, and if you had a clue about Murray you would have known he is a gamer…Either be a real Dawg fan or find another team to support

marcus, in my 57 years I have never known a guy worth shooting with the name of marcus. They have always top flight trash talkers. You are just one in a long line of marcuses. Oh yea, there was marcus allen, the guy who enraged OJ when he went out with O.J.’s wife before OJ brought her to room temperatue. I had forgotten about him. Murray is great, you marcus are a period.

There is ZERO chance (barring injury) that LeMay starts one single game in 2011.

Didnt play his senior year, and Murray showed he can win in this league.

All you haters citing his 4th qtr and redzone stats are right – he needs to improve. Really improve.

But this kid showed more poise and better decision making ability than Stafford did his first season. By a long shot.

We dont need LeMay.

We need Crowell.

In a bad way.

2002 Musa Smith. Hard hitting back 1000 yards plus

2005 Thomas Brown hard nosed as well. With a little change of pace with Shockley.

Ealey and King really are B plus backs in a league that requires an A grade running attack to win.

I could care less about another twelve star QB.

Big deal.

(stafford and moreno never got it done cause of willie-thats another post all together)
