Bulldogs to the Liberty Bowl?

ATHENS — Georgia became bowl-eligible for the 14th consecutive season Saturday night, and in the wee hours of Sunday morning, it looked and sounded like the Bulldogs probably are headed to the Liberty Bowl.

“We’ve got a lot of folks in Memphis that would love to see the Dogs,” Steve Ehrhart, the Liberty Bowl’s executive director, said in an interview on his way out of Sanford Stadium.

Minutes earlier, Ehrhart was seen chatting with Georgia coach Mark Richt.

“We know we can’t do anything formally [because], as Mark said, we’re sort of under an embargo,” Ehrhart said. “But I think the fact that here I am talking to him at, what time is it, 12:30 in the morning [tells you] we’re pretty darn serious.”

Georgia’s 42-34 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday night evened the Bulldogs’ record at 6-6, the threshold required for bowl eligibility.

The Liberty Bowl, which matches an SEC team vs. the Conference USA champion, will be played at 3:30 p.m. EST on Dec. 31.

The Conference USA representative in the Liberty Bowl will be the winner of next Saturday’s league championship game between Central Florida and SMU. Central Florida is coached by former Georgia Tech coach George O’Leary and SMU by former Atlanta Falcons coach June Jones.

While SEC bowl scenarios might remain somewhat in flux until after next Saturday’s SEC Championship Game — and until it is certain whether two SEC teams will reach BCS games – it seems likely that Georgia will be available for the Liberty.

Nashville’s Music City Bowl, which picks just ahead of the Liberty, is generally expected to take Tennessee. The Vols became bowl eligible with a victory over Kentucky on Saturday.

Georgia last played in the Liberty Bowl in 1987. The Bulldogs also played in the game in 1967.

“We’ve been talking about Georgia for basically all season,” Ehrhart said. “We’ve got a lot of tradition and pride with the Liberty Bowl. We’re the seventh oldest bowl game, and we haven’t had Georgia in 23 years.”

Ehrhart said he even mentioned to Richt last spring, when the Georgia coach was in Memphis  to speak to a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event, that it’d be nice to have him back in town on Dec. 31.

Music City Bowl is obviously better then Liberty. How do they take a Tennessee team who we won head to head over us?

Any bowl sounds good to me, however, I am curious to know why the Music City Bowl would pick Tennessee over UGA. Didn’t we spank UT pretty good this year?

Aaron Murray is the reason UGA almost lost. He should have gone out there on defense and stopped the triple option on his own. And his completion rating was a horrid 79% with 271 yards and 3 touchdowns. Are you kidding me? He is the worst QB ever to play at UGA.

I shudder to think how bad we’ll be without AJ and Durham and with that group we call the defense. When you give up more points to a team than either Duke or Kansas gave up to that same team, things do not look good on that side of the ball. Yes, we have a good QB, but no running backs and now no receivers. This plus we are dumber than dirt – we refuse to take a knee with 85 seconds left and thereby give Tech its only chance to win the game. Fortunately, their QB is the worse passer in the nation, throwing the ball in the dirt while our brilliant running back is celebrating a TD Tech intentionally let us score so they could get the ball back.

We might get a stud running back. We might get a stud receiver to replace AJ. We might even find someone to play and coach defense. Sure, I understand all those are long shots, but the one thing I’m positive about bothers me even more: “There ain’t no cure for stupid,”

Us playing Boise? I prefer us playing James Madison. Neither would be a lock (for us, obviously),

Admittedly, Tech was determined tonight to be the “Most Worst” [sic] team rather than Georgia beating them. Good points: Not a single roughing the passer, hit out of bounds or excessive celebration penalty. Good point: The Defense really saved Georgia tonight by not giving up any points on three fumbles and a lost kickoff. Good point: Murray passing was great. Now, if we could get a five star in state running back, we’d be ready to take off.

Dawg Tired, leave the public library, go back to your house (cardboard box under the 75/85 tunnel) and suck up the ninth loss in ten years. UGA is still bowl bound and still is the dominating force in GA football. SEE ya (read BEAT ya) next year

Mike Bobo is terrible I predicted 6 straight plays he called tonight. The sad part is that I only predicted 6 plays. Get a 7 point lead then run on 1st, run on second, force a pass on third and long when your qcb is 14-17 with over 250 yds at that point. You cant make this stuff up. I would bet my house that I could destroy Bobo or Richt in a game of ncaa, especially in the coach only mode.

June Jones, after 19-29 record as Falcons head coach was fired 1996; he had been O.C. the 3 years before that.

His offense is as crappy as is Paul Johnson’s.

Never in the NFL or college has he enjoyed a success as that team’s head coach over the period he was head coach. SMU what a joke of an opponent that would be. 16-21 at SMU, for example. Run & Shoot, but never run the ball, he would actually fit right in here at UGA, a football team with a “TANDEM” of running backs – cough cough.

Southern Methodist University, off its NCAA imposed “Death Penalty.”

Hawai’i coach June Jones got his butt beat by The Bulldogs January 8, 2008. It seems our current coaches however cannot get consistent pressure on known passing downs and still cannot cover my mother on a route. We look like New Mexico on Defense.

Coach Richt ends the season tied for 8th worst football team in The SEC, after a similar finish last season, also about the same for 2006. 4 losses 2006, 2008 was a total disaster the worst season in the history of Bulldogs’ football both on and off the field; you might recall the 21 out carousing Athens prior to the Opening Game, for example ? 2009 we lost 5 and we topped that in 2010 with 6 losses.

Only team we can beat is Georgia tek.

1-9 vs Coach Richt, Georgia tek is wholly unable to recruit this talent-laden state at # 51 recruiting class for Paul Johnson, annually. It has to be pretty darn disheartening to be involved in the woebegone football program # 34 in wins since 1959 fifty years, and look over in the stands and see the few fans you have are all Nerds of the highest order.

God Awful looking fans in the stands tonight.

I am still holding out for January 8 Birmingham Bowl vs South Florida.

A Bowl Game vs George O’Leary (résumé faker) UCF means nothing, but it does go to prove that Florida sucked this season. Beat us, but then again so did everyone else

but

Georgia tek.

If we wanted to play 1 of these crappy teams this season, we should have scheduled them during the regular season this year instead of Colorado, whom with AJ Green we were over-matched.

1-9 vs Coach Richt, Georgia tek sucks; but that is all Coach Richt can beat. Please do not discuss CMR record at UGA 10 years of 3-10 vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams. Please do not discuss 13-12 vs SEC East the last 5 full entire seasons. Just 9-1 vs Georgia tek, whom my mother would be ashamed to be on the same field with beating up a hapless group of losers. Why can we get up for that game, but 10 games in 10 years vs such opponents, CMR has managed to lose 10 games against totally unranked teams in the Top 25 Final AP Poll during his tenure here ?

Marlon Brown, thank you for salvaging the season for us tonight with your fumble recovery.

Todd Grantham, nothing personal son, but Coach Richt has not hired 1 good assistant coach in 10 years of this CMR Era. 417 yards on the ground and another 101 in the air. You had 2 weeks to prepare for this game. God Almighty; I would hate to think what would have happened a week ago.

Caleb King, can someone tell him to declare please ?

Washaun, once you get enough yards to make the 1st down to run out the clock, you have to get on your knee. Is there no one on CMR’s staff who knows a thing about football ?

And, what was this hug of the reluctant Anthony Allen, Coach Richt ? That is sickening to watch.

Aaron Murray our best player all season, is 2-7 on converting 3rd downs and 6-6 as a starter with yet a game left to not end up with a losing record for the season. A season in which he beat NO ONE. A season which he also LOST to Colorado with AJ Green (Also lost to hapless Florida with AJ Green and lost to Auburn with AJ Green and lost for good measure to 3 more teams without AJ Green.)

# 50 in Total Offense the Field General has the last say about what play he will check off to at the line.

# 76 at Kickoff Returns. I thought we were supposed to be so great on Offense & Special Teams ?

# 54 in sacks of Aaron Murray

# 56 in sacks of opposing Quarterbacks

We were beat on both sides on the line all season long

Better to be 6-6 than try by God to throw a completion on 3rd down

Take the sack instead

Washaun Ealey ends the season 751 yards rushing 85 receiving

Caleb Darnell King 430 yards rushing 8 receiving – scored 2 TD equally his # of arrests

Boy are we going to miss Justin Houston next year and Akeem Dent and Kris Durham (over 1000 yds career) and Brandon Boykin (787 this year after 988 last year returning kickoffs & put in games for like 1 play all 2008 wasted season) and Clint Boling and Shaun Chapas 7 TD and no fullback in sight to replace him and Vance Cuff and Chris Davis and Josh Davis and Demarcus Dobbs and Darryl Gamble and Kiante Tripp and Brandon Wood and Akeem Hebron and Fred Munzenmaier and AJ Green.

16 better players than we had come in the 2010 Signing Class and 16 better players than we have coming in in the 2011 Class too.

4 losses 2006 and in 2007 beat no one, 2006 beat # 9 Auburn

3 losses 2008 beat no one Top 25 Final AP Poll

5 losses 2009 beat no one Top 10 Final AP Poll

6 losses 2010 beat no one Top 100 Final AP Poll

20 losses 5 years, average 4 losses a season, beat 1 Top 10 team over 5 years now, James Madison has a better record than that.

It was a season to forget.

After 2009 which was a season to forget.

After 2008 which was the worst season of the last 3.

Or in backwards order :

3 losses 2008, beat no one, everyone on team arrested worst season all time UGA

5 losses 2009, beat no one, remained # 2 all-time in Fulmer Cup Arrests/Suspension

6 losses 2010, beat NO ONE, won Fulmer Cup Ntl Champ most arrested/suspended

I have not heard anyone give Richt credit this season for reducing the penalty and turnover ratio…..the improvement in penalties comes from coaching and discipline…..give CMR credit.
