Murray: ‘If I had a broken leg, I’m going to play in this game’

ATHENS – Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, held out of practice last week because of a bruised sternum suffered against Auburn, practiced without problem for the second day in a row Tuesday and appears set to start against Georgia Tech.

“I haven’t had any pain in two days,” Murray said Tuesday night. “I feel great throwing the ball. . . . I think I’m ready to play Saturday.”

Earlier Tuesday, coach Mark Richt said: “I think he is going to play.”

Murray, who also suffered a bruised knee and a cut chin against Auburn, said the bruised sternum –- the most significant of the three injuries — occurred early in the game. “I played the majority of the game with it, so . . . I feel like I can play through it if it re-aggravates,” he said.

Murray said he never doubted that he would play against Tech.

“I don’t care if I had a broken leg, I’m going to play in this game,” he said.

Didn’t he actually play in the state champ game with a broken leg in high school?

Even being a Tech fan, I have to admire his toughness. Scary thought, Murray is doing better his first year than Greene(I went to South Gwinnett and I KNOW how good he was) and Stafford. Still think this game is going to go to the wire, not some crazy blowout. I’m glad he and his teammates who went to the duke game enjoyed themselves, I think it showed sportsmanship from both sides on how low key they kept things and the light ribbing the UGA players received. See you puppies in Athens Saturday. GO TECH!!!!!!.

I, like you, think Saturday’s game is likely to go down to the wire.

If attitude was all that counted, and execution didn’t, Murray would win the Heisman this year. Kid has a good attitude, doesn’t execute well when it counts on 3rd downs, in the 4th qrtr, and in the red zone, or against teams with winning records, but he does have a good attitude. And yes, he’ll need to figure out a way to execute better in order to win more than 5 games a year.

He might be a little TOO positive. He might not be able to see or correct his weaknesses.

Murray is a warrior. Should be a 2 TD win for UGA but somehow I think it will be close like most other UGA-GT games have been.

Murray seems to have the drive to be great, if he ever gets down things like timing, and quicker decision making, he can be great. But it’s a long shot. The kid excels at theory and planning and attitude, struggles with practical stuff like correcting mistakes, timing & execution. Lot of work to do. Not sure he’s the right QB for UGA. Lemay or Mason or Gray, maybe so.

Remember this Rick Reilly SI article about QB phenom to be Ron Pawlus? Never happened.

Can you give us some technical reasons that you thin Lemay or Gray, would be a better fit for UGA? Also what mistakes have you seen him make, what correction did he need to put in, and what makes you think he struggled to do so?

Technical reasons Lemay, Mason or Gray better fit? See below.

What corrections does Murray need to make?
1- too indecisive–waits too long in the pocket
2- doesn’t get the ball to playmakers enough
3- chokes on 3rd down
4- chokes in the 4th qrtr
5- chokes in the red zone
6- overthrows too much–poor timing
7- underthrows too often—gets receivers like Ealey/Durham killed
8- doesn’t use his legs enough–rumor is—he runs pretty well–but only gets 15 yards rushing a game
9- chokes against teams with winning records
10- spends too much time watching film, too little repping mistakes
11- be as accurate when you have a small lead, are tied, or are behind, as you are when you’re up by 15.
12- build trust of teammates by beating more than 1 winning team a year–figure out what leadership is all about

Tough to be critical of Aaron Murray at this point. Best Freshman (redshirt) numbers ever for a UGA QB. He seems to be improving over the course of the year as well. He is getting the ball out quicker and going thru his reads better. He does still force the ball into coverage a little too much but he doesn’t have too many ints. He’s not the reason UGA only has 5 wins, but he will be a big reason why they will soon have 6

Murray is a tough kid, he came back from a broken leg in high school to lead his team to a championship. I believe he would play in the Tech game with a broken leg. The shots he took from Fiarley 2 weeks ago and kept getting up were unbelieveable, some of them were cheap too i might add. One hit I personally saw him take and get back up was when UGA had the ball on our last posession against Arkansas. Ealey missed his block and Murray got blindsided worse than anybody i’ve ever seen. Still got back up. If not for that one missed block we beat Arkansas.
Can’t win them all. Maybe we can squeak bt the techies.
Haven’t misses a Tech game since they played on Thanbksgiving day however long thats been.
Go dawgs, and hope both teams have a good safe game.
And to all you Tech fans coming to the game, you may get ribbed but in section 120 you;lll be treated with respect, always have been from our section, we’re where the staff and faculty hang out and act like real Dawg fans.

You’d think if Murray had:
1) The #1 most experienced O-Line in college football with 155 starts
2) Ealey at RB averaging more yards per carry than Herschel Walker or Marcus Lattimore
3) Future top 5 WR pick AJ Green

You’d think a QB might win more than 1 game against a winning team a year. Especially if he’s as good as you say.

Mason, Gray, or Lemay CAN’T be worse than Murray in those choke areas, he’s like 86th ranked in the nation in accuracy on 3rd down. Anyone could beat that. Even Greg Bingham.

The D had a shutout in 1 win, forced 4 TO’s against Kent for win, forced 3 TO’s against Tenn for win, held L Laffy & Vand to 7 points for 2 more wins.

The D also held SC & Miss St to under 20 points, but the offense couldn’t score enough to pull out wins in those 2 games.

Defense won 5 games, lost 3 (Ark, Auburn & Colorado)

Offense won 0 games, and lost 3 (SC, Miss St & Florida).

Greg Bingham could have beaten L Laffy & Vanderbilt & Idaho State. And with the 7 turnovers against Kentucky & Tennessee, Bingham could have won those games too. Murray didn’t win 1 game for Georgia that any Qb on the UGA roster couldn’t have won.

Marcus-YOu can’t just go by record. Murray doesn’t play defense. THe O_Line & running game hasn’t measured up to expectations either. He also had to play withough AJ Green for 4 games as well. Even when Green did come back…UGA was playing well & had the lead, but once he AJ started to have cramps & had to leave UGA ended up losing. It was like AJ 1st game of the yr., bc he had been out for so long. I’m sure their record wouldn’t have been quite as bad if they had AJ for all those games. Not saying they would have won all those games, but at a least some. UGA was expected to have a really ogod O-Line & RBs this yr., & an inexperienced QB. So, it makes sense that they would not ask Murray to do too much early on. It’s not his fault that the rest of the team turned out not to be as good. He still had some pretty good numbers despite the fact that the coaches hadn’t even turned him loose yet.

Marcus…You my friend do not know what you are talking about. Have you ever even played the game. Murray has had a tremendous year as a redshirt freshman. No way no how is Gray or Mason a better option than Murray. I really do not know what team you have been watching if you are laying our losses on #11. The worst game he has played all year was against Florida and the kid still brought us back. Bad decision in overtime is the only MISTAKE I have seen the kid make that cost us the game. But in reality if we score 31 against the likes of a FL our defense should hold them under that number for a W. So I do not even put that on Murray. Our qb position is great hands for the next few years and I am glad we have him. Murray you are a damn good Dawg!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would also be interesting to see what the norm was for third down yards needed was this year. I know that the inability to run on 2nd down, especially earlier in the season, has affected those third down completion rates. As a team, UGA is actually pretty decent nationally, as far as 3rd down conversion, due to (i’m guessing converting the shorter run, and relying on the pass for the longer). would also like to know how those 86 spots break down as far as class. Also conference, SOS, etc. I see some pretty high percentages for some teams that arent very good.

UGA is very highly rated nationally in red zone scoring, and Murray personally is highly rated in points accounted for. I think only 2 SEC QBS are higher rated nationally. only 2 or 3 with a higher overal completion percentage. Then there is the 30+ points streak exceeding any in UGA history deal. So obviously cherry picking stats can be made to say whatever you like.
