QB Murray returns to practice; throws ball ‘extremely well,’ Richt says

(Updated 8:45 p.m.)

As Georgia’s football team resumed preparations Monday for its regular-season finale against Georgia Tech, quarterback Aaron Murray returned to the practice field for the first time since suffering knee and sternum injuries against Auburn.

Coach Mark Richt said on his radio call-in show Monday night that Murray threw the ball “extremely well,” although Richt cautioned that practice conditions are quite different from game conditions for Georgia quarterbacks.

“Aaron is doing well,” Richt said. “He got to practice today. He went through the whole thing. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s ready to play [under game conditions]. But because we don’t hit our quarterbacks in practice, he was able to do everything we asked him to do. I’m not sure how he would have handled getting hit and tackled to the ground and having the full weight of one or two guys land on him. I don’t know how he’d do in that situation right now.

“But he does feel a lot better. He threw the ball extremely well. If he keeps getting better — like he said today, ‘Coach, I got five more days.’ I hope by the end of the week he’ll feel good enough to go.”

The Georgia-Georgia Tech game kicks off at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in Sanford Stadium.

Murray “wants to play, there’s no doubt about that,” Richt said.

The redshirt freshman quarterback suffered a bruised sternum and a bruised knee in the Bulldogs’ Nov. 13 loss at Auburn. He was held out of practice last week, when Georgia had an open date.

“[Murray] looked pretty good,” tailback Washaun Ealey said after Monday’s practice. “He came out a little edgy today, but he got all that worked out. He looked good toward the end of practice. You could tell he was real banged up, but he’s fighting through it. He’s a tough competitor. He knows we’re all counting on him to come through, so he’s out there trying to grind every day to get the job done.”

Ealey added: “I’m pretty sure he’ll play Saturday.”

Well, when the season played out, losing to Mississippi State, Arkansas and S. Carolina late in the 4th quarter (in each game) doesn’t look so bad does it.

Dawgs will slap the bugs right in the chops from the start.

Tech will move the ball, but Tevin will be as jittery as any inexperienced QB to EVER play under the lights in big bad Sanford Stadium. Tech turns the ball over at least 4 times Saturday night.

After watchign Duke move the ball on short passes to TE’s, gaining about 20-30 yard consistantly, I would play action, roll out and hit Orson and White across the middle NON STOP until Tech shows they can stop it.

Then just start handing it off. The hit AJ streaking down the sideline.

Tech probably has the WORST defense we have faced all seaosn, and we have been putting up big numbers against good ones.

Man, Aaron “Choke City” Murray is back? I thought we’d finally get a chance to see the state of Georgia record holder for td’s and yards, Hutson Mason, get a shot with the 1st stringers.

For those of you that have bought the kool-aid, here’s the truth about why Georgia is 5-6. It’s Aaron “Choke City” Murray.

Every college football expert, in the pre-season, said Georgia would struggle with a Freshman QB.

Yet Georgia, especially Richt, won’t admit it’s what’s going on.

Well, here’s what you need to know about Aaron “Choke City” Murray:
Pass completion ranking:
#86 in the red zone
#76 on 3rd down
#83 in the 4th quarter
#71 against teams with winning records

Murray’s record as a starter at Georgia?
5-6, worst in Mark Richt’s 20+ year career.

Mason, we need you.

FROM AN EARLIER AJC BLOG: Reading all these simple minded and illiterate comments from the THUGA rednecks remind me that I was right to routinely reject any applicant for a job when I was the Personnel Director for a Fortune 500 Company, Naturally being a Tech Grad (IM 1976)I already knew of the educational gaps for THUGA grads and the redneck work ethics they brought to the job. Occasionally I would ,against my better judgement, feed one of the poor things into some half-ass entry level job just to seee if my opinion of their qualifications, or more than likely unqualifications, and without fail they had either already been fired or quit. The ones that managed to stay provided me daily glimpses of my mistakes.

It was sort of pitiful to seee the poor things come in with their degrees and actually think they were qualified. Frankly a degree from THUGA held about the same weight as Fort Valley State, ABAC or Clark of Atlanta. Actually I preferred a degree holder from these Institutions of “higher learning” to THUGA as they knew which side of the 8 ball they were on and had better attitudes.

Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 96% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with Adams and his cronies knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university. I am going to this next week’s game where the Ga THUGS will undoubtedly whip my North Avenue Scholar Athletes once again. Brawn and brainless win out over brains any day of the week when you are talking mayhem on the field. But once again I am hoping that Tech stomps their sorry asses.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change in Athens until UGA changes its third-rate coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

JB

You’re right Marcus, lets look at stats…

We have a RED SHIRT Freshman playing for the first time this year. Never had a snap in a meaningful game. He has beaten out or come close to Matthew Stafford’s, David Green’s, D.J. Shockley’s and several others records. He has passed for fewer interceptions this year than Stafford his freshman year, and he has been playing behind an offensive line that has crumbled time and time again. Let’s NOT mention the fact that in all four of our first four losses, major plays were lost due to RB error, or penalties by someone else on the field.

Has Aaron Murray played perfect? No, not at all. Is Hutson Mason good? Yes, sure as hell is. But I sure as hell wouldn’t replace him in the final, and probably biggest, game of our regular season.

Anyone will point out to you that our biggest problem is still defense, but even that doesn’t bother me because it’s a defense in transition.

We’re having a bad year, get over it and get over yourself.

Next year if he plays like this or worse, then we’ll see if you have validity. But I seriously doubt it.

La Lafayette: 2-9

Combined record of these 5 teams is 18 wins and 36 losses.

Blogs this time of year are always entertaining. I read time after time how we have no chance (the last few years your big weapon has been the mighty wishbone-the offensive choice of many high schools and lower level colleges) and yet we have won eight of nine.

Typically we win 7-8 games every decade against Tech. Winning this game is like good hygeine. It is not something you brag about when you do but it is something you are ashamed of when you don’t.

I’d be surprised if anyone is still reading comments at this point, what with Marcus posting 9 of every 10 posts (and sometimes changing his name), but I’ve got to respond…

I’ve watched virtually every play of every game this season. Murray is very good. He’s not perfect, but he’s good. So here’s my “evaluation” of our W/L record with special reference to Murray’s play:

Games We Lost On Murray’s Mistakes: 1
He came out and played tight against Florida in the first quarter. We squandered scoring chances while they were figuring out how to run their offense and the eventually jumped out to a 21-7 lead. That cost us the game. (Yes, he threw the *tipped* interception in OT while being hurried…not really his fault. Bottom Line: We lost that game in the first quarter because the first play was an interception — on a play that shouldn’t have been called until the 3rd quarter after we’d lulled them to sleep.)

Games We Would Have Lost BAD If Murray Was No Good: 5
The SC and Ark. losses came from coaches trying to rely on the run when it wasn’t there, mainly fearful of turning Murray loose. If they let him run and sling the ball, we probably beat SC and for sure beat Arky. Miss St. was just a bad outing by a team on the snide…Colorado, doubly so. In the first 3, AJ didn’t play. Against CO, he cramped from altitude and lack of game time. In those situations, Murray’s best target (and decoy) isn’t even on the field. SC, Arky and MSU essentially loaded up the box and dared us to run, which we did to no great effect since our line was still far from gelling at that point. We lost to #2 Auburn, a team who puts up big points on everyone they play. We were in it for a while even though we eventually gave up 49 points. We didn’t score enough points, but 30+ is usually enough to beat somebody.

Games We Don’t Win If Murray is No Good: 1
We “barely” beat 6-5 Kentucky because their offense is outstanding. If Derrick Locke isn’t hurt, we lose. If they don’t turn it over 4 times, we lose. But, we put up 44 points on them, so we win. Murray was not the reason it was “close” (44-31 is close?). He’s the reason we WON.

This whole idea that Murray is the problem is simply not borne out by the facts. I honestly can’t believe I’m having to argue this point.

Frankly, Aaron Murray looked poised against SC and Arky, he loosened up and eventually played well against Florida when he was obviously AMPED in the 1st Qtr., and he played one heck of a game against a great Auburn team. MSU: We were reeling from back to back losses. Colorado: No excuse. That game SUCKED.

SO…I have to ask: Marcus, are you just an idiot or the president of the Hutson Mason fan club? Mason is a great athlete and seems like a good kid, but this is really moronic suggesting that Mason would play at a much higher level without even a full year learning the offense.

Aaron Murray will be the quarterback of this team next year. He’s a FINE QB. And, in closing let me say: I still trust Mark Richt’s ability to evaluate a quarterback more than I trust some goober on the AJC blogs. Good day to you.

There’s little doubt that Georgia will win the game, but consider this: In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

At least Tech fans can be proud of our team, win or lose. UGA, on the other hand, is a cesspool. And the winner of the Fulmer Cup. And the infamous red panties, don’t forget them.

Marcus – the immense amount of dislike for anything Murray has accomplished this year is quite telling ,actually. I would say it indicates a lack of “a life” on your part with a leaning towards misplaced hostility. Have you been bullied in the school yard lately or has your sister been beating you up again? You should really get some professional help and practice eating crow, because that it exactly what you are going to have to do before Murray finishes his career at UGA. Mocking injured players is something AU fans do best, but your guys are giving them a run for their money, and we all know they have an abundance to spread around.

for ugag to be second behind vandy only means that ugag has so
watered-down and dumbed-down the curriculum that it fraudulently
pads the graduation stats.

i’m sure if every ugag player was a Criminal Justice major then the graduation rate would be 100% and #1 in the sec.

it would only mean ugag would be an even bigger joke.

Richt had a lot of options BESIDES letting Murray starts.

1- Let Mett start after a 1 or 2 game suspension, who outplayed him over the Spring
2- Go get a JUCO guy like Cam Newton with experience
3- Let Logan Gray start, who outplayed him over the Spring
4- Let Huston Mason start, who owns all the state-wide Georgia records for td’s and yardage

What has Murray DONE to EARN his starts as a starter–beat 1 team with a winning record, played ok against lousy Div. 2 teams with a 1-10 record? When Ealey fumbled 2x, he was benched, when Murray threw 3 interceptions and fumbled in 1 game, he was rewarded with another start.

I don’t care if Murray threw for 4000 yards, and 86 td’s, if he can’t beat more than 1 team with a winning recrd, and has his team at Richt’s worst record ever at 5-6. OBVIOUSLY, that would mean, Murray pumped his stats up playing against FAR INFERIOR competition, and CHOKED against teams with winning records.

that’s what his record and stats tell us.

Marcus

Richt’s judgement of QB’s at UGA hasn’t always been good. Joe T? Joe Cox? Now Murray?

Hutson is the No. 2. Hutson has 1 of 7 QB’s who won Parade All-American, and Hutson was ranked as a top 20 QB by ESPN. Huston owns the state-wide record for td’s and yardage, and Murray plays like garbage against teams with winning records. Give Hutson a shot, he can’t be worse than Murray.

If not Hutson, give Gray or Bingham a start, just bench Murray, he’s simply awful when it counts.

this is really important, read this closely, you’ll never hear this from the Georgia coaching staff.

Here is why Georgia is 5-6.

Here’s what you need to know about Aaron “Choke City” Murray:
Pass completion ranking:
#86 in the red zone
#76 on 3rd down
#83 in the 4th quarter
#71 against teams with winning records

This is the worst of any UGA QB in a decade.

This year was wasted on Aaron Murray. UGA had the #1 most experienced O-Line, AJ Green, Durham, Charles, experienced RB’s which were at the top of their game when the season ended last year.

And all Murray could do was go 5-6, and beat 1 team with a winning record?

It’s inexcusable.

2. Everyone would be calling for Richt’s head if we had Newton right now and he was in the same position he is now. His dad obviously shopped him around and probably to UGA as well and thankfully someone at UGA said thanks but no thanks.

Sometimes when you “miss” on a big time prospect it’s really a win.

Murray doesn’t have it.

He chokes when his team needs him the most.

Some guys have “it”, some don’t.

Luckily, the “it” facotr isn’t sme mystical thing.

You can find QB’s that have the “it” factor by looking at:
1) their win/loss record as a QB
2) how they do in the red zone
3) how they do in the 4th quarter
4) How they do on 3rd down
5) How they do against teams with winning records

The team plays WORSE when Murray is the QB.

When Murray’s up by 15+ points, he’s 77% accurate. When the pressure’s off, he excels.

But what happens when the game tightens up? He chokes.

When the scores is 8-14 up, 50% accurate, 1-7 pts up, 57%, when game is tied (pressure at most) 43% accurate.

So, the closer the game, the worse Murray gets.

Our “Most experienced line” hasn’t done squat to open holes for the running backs, not to mention that AJ was out for 3 of those 6 loses, not to mention the only pass rusher we have is coming from the line backer position (We need a new Offensive line coach, and a real deal Nose Tackle to make the 3-4 defense work properly). I tend to think any Qb on the UGA roster would have beaten teams like L Laffy, Id St, Vanderblt, Tenn and if they had 4 turnovers against Kentucky. Hard to credit any of those wins directly to Murray.

The pass rush will improve our secondary. Look at what the Falcons did from last year to this year… Where did the secondary improve besides getting Robinson? By an improved pass rush. Don’t get me wrong, rushing the passer can get you beat sometimes, but these great QB’s in the SEC would have allot more problems hanging 30-40 points on us from their backs.

Hoss

November 23rd, 2010
2:41 pm

I wouldn’t credit the Tenn win directly to Murray either. Georgia forced 3 turnovers in that one, it’s a game any UGA Qb would have won too. Murray’s been given too much credit for the wins, particularly the Tenn & Kentucky wins, where the defense forced 7 turnovers in thsoe two games. The L Laffy, Id St, and Vanderbilt, those are teams any Qb on the UGA roster wins too.

Reddawg0369

November 23rd, 2010

I’m all for letting him develop. I still wish we could have held onto Mettenburger too… I hear he’s about to commit to either LSU or Arkansas. Who sees this coming back to bite us?

Hoss

November 23rd, 2010
2:46 pm

The UGA defense acutally has won all 5 of Georgia’s wins.

Kentucky–defense forced 4 turnovers
Tenn- defense forced 3 turnovers
Id St- defense has a shutout
L Laffy- defense held to 7
Vanderbilt- dfense held to 7 points

The defense hasn’t gotten enough credit for the wins. With this defense in these 5 games, any UGA Qb on the roster woud have won those 5 games.

Reddawg0369

November 23rd, 2010
2:51 pm

I agree Hoss… The wins are a credit to good defense and run heavy offense. Place the losses onto the shoulders of poor pass rush on defense and lack of run game on the offensive line. It’s hard to score points from the bench.

Eric

Mett has been spectacular, yes, he’s been offered by both LSU and Alabama, he threw for 36 td’s/3int’s, 11-0, and has Butler playing in the Nationla Championship. Coach Richt over-reacted getting rid of Mett. He’s a superstar.

Actually, the defense played good enough to win against South Carolina & Mississippi St, held them both to under 20 points, just didn’t get any offense. The defense played pretty good against Florida too, not as bad as the past, but the 4 turnovers on offense proved too hard ot overcome. Offense lost those 3 games.

Reddawg0369

November 23rd, 2010

Eric… I said it from the beginning of last season to the time he got booted from the team “Mettenberger would have been our starter this year” not taking anything from Murray, but Mett has the size and arm strength that a pro-style offense is looking for. If we make it to the SEC championship game next year, we may be looking at this kid pick us apart!

I blame the defense for 3 losses, Colorado, Auburn, and Arkansas. The offense played good enough to win those games, but the defense blew it. Defense gets credit for 5 wins, and 3 losses, offense gets credit for 0 wins, and 3 losses.

Coaching, Defense, and a stout run game, will have us bookend wins in the Georgia Dome next year… that or we’ll be talking about a new head coach.

Yes, to whoever earlier said Bobo needs to be fired. Without a doubt, he needs to go. Watch the Mississippi St or the South Carolina game, the offense just didn’t show up, and with a brand new defense so early in the season, the offense had to carry the team in those 2 games. They didn’t, Bobo should be fired.

You just can’t win in the SEC passing the ball. Bobo needs to go. He doesn’t believe this. And he is wrong.

The offense knew they had to win the games against Auburn & Arkansas, they knew they’d be shootouts, and Bobo didn’t get it done. Auburn & Arkansas just score a lot of points, no one really stops them. So, you have to outscore them like Joe Cox did last year–the offense has to win those 2 games.

Hoss, you and Marcus are fools. If you watched any of the games, you would know that the offensive line cannot block and that the points UGA has put up are in spite of their poor blocking.

As for the defense, the stats are misleading. UGA’s secondary looks to be suspect but they are getting burned off the play action pass. The problem is the D-line cannot stop the inside run. Opposing teams torch UGA up the middle with inside runs and cutbacks, then throw a few passes behind the DB off the play-action.

UGA’s problems are pretty simple to identify, really. Coach better on the offensive line and recruit Mount Cody #2 for the Nose Guard. The D tackles will probably be pretty good with another year under their belts. Both groups of linemen need to get stronger.

I didn’t say it would be easy to correct, just easy to identify. Ok nerd, you can go back to trolling this blog in between games of Call of Duty.

I can’t wait til this weekend when clemson beats sc and then they can say they are sec champs in 2 weeks. That would be so funny right! Just like the idiot uga fans who said the same thing last year!

What would be even more funny is clemson would be the team that
A. played auburn the closest…so far..still bama left
B. Beat the sec east and possibly the sec champ!

Fsu is going to roll over Fla and show you stupid sec morons your conference is only where it is today because of brand image. Most see that your conf is very overrated this year.
That will be proven on Saturday

frank…dare you to come back on this site Sunday morning after UF beats FSU. The ACC is the joke of college football, much like you coming on UGA blogs to run FSU smack. Who’s the moron? Ignoramus

Frank, true the SEC East is not in good shape but the ACC sucks. Don’t try and spin it, you are the Big East Lite. For your argument to hold true, Clemson would have to beat Auburn (the likely SEC champ) to make that claim. But the point is moot. Clemson will lose to SC and has already lost to Auburn.

Can Georgia Tech upset 5-6 UGA?

Marcus, you’re an idiot. You want a kid right out of high school to replace a guy who is throwing the ball well, very few interceptions and twice named sec freshman of the week? I’m sorry, but you must be one brain-dead cat.

Marcus,

Glad to see that you’re gone – you are gone aren’t you? Congrats, to posting the most moronic blogs ever seen this yr on AJC.

What a tool you are, trying to rip a young man going out every week giving 100% and sometimes not getting a lot of support…

Some guys just pay attention to the wrong stuff. So what if he throws for 58 td’s but can’t get his team to .500? He needs to figure out what’s wrong, fix it, get better at timing, he does the wrong stuff at the right time, and the right stuff at the wrong time. He’s among the worst when it counts. Among the best when it doesn’t. Maybe he’s putting all his work on not throwing interceptions and reading defenses, and too little attention to EXECUTION, too much PLANNING, too little EXECUTION, maybe he needs to work harder at EXECUTION, being good against teams with winning records, on 3rd down, in the 4th quarter, and in the red zone, and winning more football games, you think?

Marcus you sound like a man on unemployment. Angry by nature and miserable too. I suspect you also suffer penis envy. You suffered brain damage from an enema as a youth. Murray is growing into his ob role well. Dogs kill the bees.
