Early lines have Dogs up to a 15-point favorite over Tech (plus lots of notes)
10:45 am November 22, 2010, by Tim Tucker
Some notes to start the week . . .
- As you might have heard, Georgia and Georgia Tech will play football in Athens on Saturday night. Georgia (5-6) opens the week as a surprisingly heavy favorite over Tech (6-5). According to VegasInsider.com, as of late Sunday, one sportsbook had the Bulldogs as a 15-point favorite and three others had the Dogs as a 13-point favorite.
- Georgia returns to the practice field Monday afternoon after a three-day break. The Dogs are looking for the session to provide a good indicator of the health of quarterback Aaron Murray, who was sidelined from practice last week with knee and sternum bruises suffered against Auburn. It’d be a surprise if Murray isn’t able to play against Tech. But if he’s not, true freshman Hutson Mason would start and Logan Gray would be “more of an emergency” QB, Mark Richt said last week.
- The Georgia-Boise State matchup in next season’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome, announced Friday, required eight teams to juggle schedules: Georgia, Boise State, Louisville (dropped from Georgia’s schedule), North Carolina (added to Louisville’s schedule to replace Georgia), James Madison (switching dates on North Carolina’s schedule to accommodate the UNC-Louisville game), Ole Miss (moved a scheduled 2011 season opener against Boise State to 2014), BYU (replaced Boise on Ole Miss’ 2011 schedule) and Oregon State (changed dates on BYU’s schedule to accommodate the BYU-Ole Miss game). Who has enough clout to facilitate all those changes? Only ESPN, which played a major match-making role.
- One clarification from Gary Stokan, president of the Chick-fil-A Bowl and Chick-fil-A Kickofff Game. He said on a conference call Friday afternoon that the Kickoff Game and ESPN would pay Louisville $600,000 to buy out its contract with Georgia. He later said he misspoke about ESPN and that the Kickoff Game would pay the buyout. In essence, the buyout seems to come out of Georgia’s cut from the Kickoff Game. The Bulldogs will get about $1.7 million, which is $600,000 less than the $2.3 million apiece that LSU and North Carolina received for playing in this season’s event.
- Georgia AD Greg McGarity said UGA staffers will convene Monday to start figuring out how to handle ticket sales for the game against Boise State. He suggested a starting point would be the model already in place for selling Georgia’s 40,000-plus tickets to the annual game against Florida in Jacksonville. Stokan said Boise State will get an allotment of 7,500 tickets to sell and Georgia will get the rest (perhaps 55,000-plus) after some are put aside for Georgia Dome suite-holders and Chick-fil-A Bowl purposes.
- Guess what Stokan was doing as I asked followup questions Friday night? Ordering dinner at a Chick-fil-A drive-through.
- Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers reached a mind-boggling milestone Friday night — his 1,000th game as UGA coach. His first came on Nov. 10, 1979, an 88-69 win over Piedmont. His 1,000th was a 79-69 victory over Chattanooga. He’s now 752-248 as the Lady Bulldogs’ coach.
- The Georgia men’s basketball team, 1-19 in opponents’ arenas over the past two seasons, is 1-0 on the road this season after Saturday’s come-from-behind, last-second victory at Saint Louis. The Dogs (3-0 overall) head next to the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, where they’ll open against Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Thursday.
- A major signing last week for the Georgia men’s tennis program: Nathan Pasha of Atlanta — the top-ranked prospect in the state, No. 2 in the Southeast and No. 5 in the nation, according to TennisRecruiting.net -– signed a national letter of intent to attend UGA and play for the Bulldogs starting in 2011-12.

This game is on ESPN: E- Embarrasing, S – Sorry, P – Performance, N – Night definitely applies to Saturday night for both of these teams. Such a shame the national will get a look at the miserable state of college football in Georgia.

Georgia is always favored over Tech. Nothing new there. The only difference this year is both teams are terrible. It will be interesting to see what “Ice Bowls” they get to go to this year…

Outside of the state rivalry, all Tech has to play for is knocking Georgia out of bowl contention. Georgia on the other hand is playing to make it to a bowl, as if whatever bowl they would go to would be anything to crow about. Both teams are sad, really sad,

Is the main sponsor for the game this year Ty-D- Bowl? Perhaps re-reruns of the “Deadliest Catch” will be on at the same time so I won’t be tempted to watch this train wreck.

Dawg fans can push the spread in Vegas because they are successful. Not a lot of disposable income for Tech fans working at the QuikTrip.
Read the Tech boards, they are scared of our offense.
Murray will be fine.

It would be really nice to see Tech face UGA on an even keel…it won’t happen again, ever (the Ga legislature would see to that). Since the mid seventies (when the series was only a game or two apart in wins for each team) UGA has been shipping off busloads of illiterates to some place like Hargrave Military Academy and NW Oklahoma Jr. College and Bible Institute to learn their ABC’s, then it buses them back to the campus and attempts to get at least a year on the gridiron out of their “Student” athletes. Oh, well, whatever it takes to win, right? God, to return to the years when college football was played by REAL students, and the people sitting in the stands had a college degree.

I’ll be happy if we win by 15, but I have a feeling it will be closer than everyone expects. Georgia’s defense has failed to impress me so far this season, and this will be Grantham’s first game against the triple option.
I think we can pull it out, but it’ll be a good ball game. Winning our last regular season game against the Jackets always helps heal the sting of a 5-6 season. I’m looking forward to Saturday night in Athens!

If I was a gambling man I would take tech and the points! Have to admit, I’m driving home from the in-laws saturday nigfht and really won’t mind missing the game all that much. I’ll read about it when I get home.
I do look forward to both teams having winning records and playing this game. It cracks me up, with the exception of about 2 from each side, there is no smack talk going on.
Reebok’s post – “Actually, we are far more scared of our defense than we are of your offense.”
Is hysterical because we(uga) feel the exact same about ours.

I could give a rats a.. about playing anybody this week. What a dissastrous year. RECRUITING RECRUITING RECRUITING is what the damn coaches better be doing. This sitting around to the last minute to get off your ass is not going to cut it boys. You better look around because your getting passed on all sides my friends. YOUR RECORD SHOWS IT! Something is wrong at UGA! I wish I could put my finger on it but I can’t. I can only speculate. Coach Richt though can if he is willing to stop letting his coaches shovel that crap up his nose that they have been doing. But he won’t. He’s not strong enough too take his coaches to task. As far as recruiting goes. It wouldn’t take me long to decide if i wanted you or not. And if I offered a kid. He better make a decission soon because I have already contacted the next kid, and the next and the next. you see people, its not a game like these dimwits like to play. Either you want to play for your home school or you don’t. what that old saying ” either crap or get off the pot”. CMR is too serious and he can’t have fun anymore. I hate too see him holding on so tight during games hoping something good happens. Hell if you practiced better maybe ya’lld play better.

I would hope our Dawgs cover (at least);we should win by 25. However, the current Tech team can’t drive, and scores only with the big play, which Grantham’s defense has given up time after time. That said, Tech has a “worse than Willie” defense, so we should score a lot of points. I’ll take a 10 point win right now and watch South Carolina beat an Alabama trounced Auburn on tv.

It’s a sad day in Dawg Nation when the season and any possible bowl game is garbage time and practice for next year. Anyone else tired of waiting for next year? I hope McGarity is taking his new job seriously and puts some performance indicators in CMR’s contract. I don’t care about all the naysayers and what they don’t like about CMR. I personally like the man and what he stands for, but losing is something that Dawg Nation should never stand for. CMR needs to be told that if the team doesn’t finish the regular season 9-3 or better then it had better finish with a bowl win and a 9-4 record. That needs to be spelled out – 9 wins or the door. Everything else is less important. This year was not just one year. This is the second year of a two year mega-slide into football oblivion. Absolutely no one is talking about UGA on the national scene and we’re not even ranked… again. Who cares about the Yech game? We always beat them anyway so how does that change anything? We should be focused on the SECCG and earning a BCS bowl berth.

Jimbo,
You are right on and thanks! It probably won’t happen because by the time the lawyers for UGA and the lawyers for the head coach work out the language, all the coach has to do is show up for the game on Saturday. It’s always easy to spend someone else’s money.

One Vegas line is UGA -15 while another is UGA -12? Easy decision – take GT on one book and UGA on the other. At worst you are out 5% and at best you are up 200%
