Early lines have Dogs up to a 15-point favorite over Tech (plus lots of notes)
10:45 am November 22, 2010, by Tim Tucker
Some notes to start the week . . .
- As you might have heard, Georgia and Georgia Tech will play football in Athens on Saturday night. Georgia (5-6) opens the week as a surprisingly heavy favorite over Tech (6-5). According to VegasInsider.com, as of late Sunday, one sportsbook had the Bulldogs as a 15-point favorite and three others had the Dogs as a 13-point favorite.
- Georgia returns to the practice field Monday afternoon after a three-day break. The Dogs are looking for the session to provide a good indicator of the health of quarterback Aaron Murray, who was sidelined from practice last week with knee and sternum bruises suffered against Auburn. It’d be a surprise if Murray isn’t able to play against Tech. But if he’s not, true freshman Hutson Mason would start and Logan Gray would be “more of an emergency” QB, Mark Richt said last week.
- The Georgia-Boise State matchup in next season’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome, announced Friday, required eight teams to juggle schedules: Georgia, Boise State, Louisville (dropped from Georgia’s schedule), North Carolina (added to Louisville’s schedule to replace Georgia), James Madison (switching dates on North Carolina’s schedule to accommodate the UNC-Louisville game), Ole Miss (moved a scheduled 2011 season opener against Boise State to 2014), BYU (replaced Boise on Ole Miss’ 2011 schedule) and Oregon State (changed dates on BYU’s schedule to accommodate the BYU-Ole Miss game). Who has enough clout to facilitate all those changes? Only ESPN, which played a major match-making role.
- One clarification from Gary Stokan, president of the Chick-fil-A Bowl and Chick-fil-A Kickofff Game. He said on a conference call Friday afternoon that the Kickoff Game and ESPN would pay Louisville $600,000 to buy out its contract with Georgia. He later said he misspoke about ESPN and that the Kickoff Game would pay the buyout. In essence, the buyout seems to come out of Georgia’s cut from the Kickoff Game. The Bulldogs will get about $1.7 million, which is $600,000 less than the $2.3 million apiece that LSU and North Carolina received for playing in this season’s event.
- Georgia AD Greg McGarity said UGA staffers will convene Monday to start figuring out how to handle ticket sales for the game against Boise State. He suggested a starting point would be the model already in place for selling Georgia’s 40,000-plus tickets to the annual game against Florida in Jacksonville. Stokan said Boise State will get an allotment of 7,500 tickets to sell and Georgia will get the rest (perhaps 55,000-plus) after some are put aside for Georgia Dome suite-holders and Chick-fil-A Bowl purposes.
- Guess what Stokan was doing as I asked followup questions Friday night? Ordering dinner at a Chick-fil-A drive-through.
- Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers reached a mind-boggling milestone Friday night — his 1,000th game as UGA coach. His first came on Nov. 10, 1979, an 88-69 win over Piedmont. His 1,000th was a 79-69 victory over Chattanooga. He’s now 752-248 as the Lady Bulldogs’ coach.
- The Georgia men’s basketball team, 1-19 in opponents’ arenas over the past two seasons, is 1-0 on the road this season after Saturday’s come-from-behind, last-second victory at Saint Louis. The Dogs (3-0 overall) head next to the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, where they’ll open against Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Thursday.
- A major signing last week for the Georgia men’s tennis program: Nathan Pasha of Atlanta — the top-ranked prospect in the state, No. 2 in the Southeast and No. 5 in the nation, according to TennisRecruiting.net -– signed a national letter of intent to attend UGA and play for the Bulldogs starting in 2011-12.

Top Row Dawg,
that’s all dandy. But does Tech win more SEC titles than UGA? isn’t UGA perceived #4 or #5 all-time best team in SEC after BAMA/FL/LSU/TN?

A note to all Techies: This isn’t your board. Go back to your own. The closest you’ll get to beating us Saturday will be the margin of comments by you losers to the actual Dawg fans on this, and continuous, posts.
Go Dawgs. They’ll cover 15 easily.

Spurrier is King. While I do enjoy seeing the dogs loose. I have to disagree with you that you own them. Congrats on making it to the SEC championship in what might be the worst SEC East ever. Florida and Georgia both lost to MS State and if UT had played MS state they would have lost to them too. So enjoy your trip to the SEC Champ game because this is the exception not the rule and by the way. AU is going to run around, over, and through you all day that day.

You have got to be kidding me…15 point favorite…Tech with the number 1 running game in the nation…our defense against the run. which has been a joke this year…..sure our guys will be talking their usual pre-game smack led by AJ…..and probably the same results when the game is actually played…a UGA loss. I am so over this year- I just want it to be over and not have to watch this group continue to embarrass us in a bowl game. Hopefully with Boise State next year they will finally get their act together in the off season, but not placing any bets on that either

Everyone remember the pregame comments last year?
Tech 56-18. Tech won’t punt. UGA scores 3 times and has to go for two because they are so far behind. This will make 2008’s 2nd half look like nothing compared to this beatdown. Nesbitt may go for 300 yards running by himself.
I hope Richt doesn’t let his team get caught up in the 15 point spread talk and how Tech almost lost to Duke. We will get beat if we aren’t ready to play.

Interesting how all of the games had to be rescheduled so that the Chik-Fil-A game could be UGA-BSU. It confirms who really runs college football – or did everyone think that McGarity wanted all of those noon kickoffs in 2010.
Congrats to the b’ball Bulldogs with the road win in St. Louis – it’s always good to get that first road win out of the way to get some confidence for the conference games.

Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 96% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with Adams and his cronies knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university. I am going to this week’s game where the Ga THUGS will undoubtedly whip my North Avenue Scholar Athletes once again. Brawn and brainless win out over brains any day of the week when you are talking mayhem on the field. But once again I am hoping that Tech stomps their sorry asses.

@ DAWGINLEX
Don’t worry much lex, i have had the sad honor of watching this tech team all year and its true what you have heard i’m afraid. Georgia is the most talented team we have on the schedule and we have 5 losses to much lesser talented teams. It wouldn’t matter if nesbitt was playing because we were not good with him so whats the difference without him? If we have the same ol penalties and fumbles along with poor blocking up front and poor tackling… then this will be a bad night for us on national tv. The miami game was horrible enough but i think uga is better than miami so we have our work cut out. Paul johnson claimed we had a great week of practice and how he was going to right the ship all week before the duke game and we come out looking like garbage yet again?? I’m sure i will be on suicide watch again this saturday just like many other saturdays we play georgia. It’s not a real rivalry until you win more often. We have to recruit better and play smarter when facing programs like georgia. Its just the truth.

two possibilities:
Dawgs: 49 jackettes: 17 (assumes UGA comes ready to play the ENTIRE game, players focused on game instead of smack talking this week, no turnovers, the O line at least makes attempts to play to their pre-season billing, the D plays a complete game and none of the “deer in headlights looks”
Jackettes: 41 Dawgs: Assumes all the above doesnt happen

Unlike a UGA fan, I call it like I see it
- Both teams are underperformers
- Neither team has beaten a good opponent
- There is no National Interest in the game, AT ALL!
- The winner will have either 7 wins with none over a good opponent or 6 wins with none over a good opponent
- Either one team will go to a no name bowl game or both teams will go to a no name bowl game
- Neither fan base will have anything to brag about regardless of the winner
- Both fan bases should neither be happy or destroyed by the outcome of this match up
This is a 6-5 team vs a 5-6 team people. Compared to the pre season expectations, ESPN should refuse to show the game.
Now let’s hear all the UGA fans try to state how a win over GT will make them Nat’l Champs!

UGA fans continue to be delusional about their national status and aged “tradition” of superiority. Like Herschel, UGA seems to have multiple personalities. Before the ‘76 SEC Championship and ‘80 National Title, not even dog fans considered themselves a top tier program. Since then, they have exhibited the usual peaks and valleys of a middle-tier SEC (which is to say a nationally upper-middle-tier) team. The one word which characterizes the program in the past three years is “Underachievement.”

Bot UGA and Tech should be looking at this game as the first step towards next year’s re-grouping. Two disappointing teams with disappointing seasons and disappointing records to show for it all. Win lose or draw, I think the game will be……wait for it……disappointing.

IMO that spread is a bit high. Yes, Nesbitt is gone but the new QB continues to get more reps with the first string running the wishbone. The wishbone is a unique animal; once the ‘light goes on’ with your personnel it creates all kinds of trouble for a defense and can be doubly troublesome for a 3-4 alignment.
Yes, we should win but I believe a line at 13-15 is a bit much to ask of a team with a record of 5-6.
As for: “Never seen so much love for a 5-6 team…”, check with us any year regardless of whether we are 11-0 or 5-6 coming into this game. Except for the ones who will find something to complain about no matter the circumstances, most UGA fans are incredibly loyal. That means we sell a lot of tickets and a lot of us will bet on UGA. That drives the line, flawed as it may be.

UGA sucks but Tech sucks worse. Dawgs cover. Top Row is correct, UGA has the pedigree to be a top ten program and sadly they suffer fom what the TV commercials call PE (premature e……) and never close the deal. The classic underachievers that rival the even the Atlanta Braves in results. Even Bobby Cox has won a title in the 30 years since UGA has been in contention for anything significant. Beating Tech is like killing baby seals this year, please don’t try to use that as “turning point” for your program.

Who really cares about this game? One team made it to the glorious 6 win plateau this past week and the other has the chance to make it to that same glorious plateau this week. Then we as a state have not one, but two 6-6 teams vying to go to whatever toilet bowls will take them. Whoopee! Sounds like lots of high drama in Athens on Saturday night….yawn!
