Early lines have Dogs up to a 15-point favorite over Tech (plus lots of notes)

Some notes to start the week . . .

  • As you might have heard, Georgia and Georgia Tech will play football in Athens on Saturday night. Georgia (5-6) opens the week as a surprisingly heavy favorite over Tech (6-5). According to VegasInsider.com, as of late Sunday, one sportsbook had the Bulldogs as a 15-point favorite and three others had the Dogs as a 13-point favorite.
  • Georgia returns to the practice field Monday afternoon after a three-day break. The Dogs are looking for the session to provide a good indicator of the health of quarterback Aaron Murray, who was sidelined from practice last week with knee and sternum bruises suffered against Auburn. It’d be a surprise if Murray isn’t able to play against Tech. But if he’s not, true freshman Hutson Mason would start and Logan Gray would be “more of an emergency” QB, Mark Richt said last week.
  • The Georgia-Boise State matchup in next season’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome, announced Friday, required eight teams to juggle schedules: Georgia, Boise State, Louisville (dropped from Georgia’s schedule), North Carolina (added to Louisville’s schedule to replace Georgia), James Madison (switching dates on North Carolina’s schedule to accommodate the UNC-Louisville game), Ole Miss (moved a scheduled 2011 season opener against Boise State to 2014), BYU (replaced Boise on Ole Miss’ 2011 schedule) and Oregon State (changed dates on BYU’s schedule to accommodate the BYU-Ole Miss game). Who has enough clout to facilitate all those changes? Only ESPN, which played a major match-making role.
  • One clarification from Gary Stokan, president of the Chick-fil-A Bowl and Chick-fil-A Kickofff Game. He said on a conference call Friday afternoon that the Kickoff Game and ESPN would pay Louisville $600,000 to buy out its contract with Georgia. He later said he misspoke about ESPN and that the Kickoff Game would pay the buyout. In essence, the buyout seems to come out of Georgia’s cut from the Kickoff Game. The Bulldogs will get about $1.7 million, which is $600,000 less than the $2.3 million apiece that LSU and North Carolina received for playing in this season’s event.
  • Georgia AD Greg McGarity said UGA staffers will convene Monday to start figuring out how to handle ticket sales for the game against Boise State.  He suggested a starting point would be the model already in place for selling Georgia’s 40,000-plus tickets to the annual game against Florida in Jacksonville.  Stokan said Boise State will get an allotment of 7,500 tickets to sell and Georgia will get the rest (perhaps 55,000-plus) after some are put aside for Georgia Dome suite-holders and Chick-fil-A Bowl purposes.
  • Guess what Stokan was doing as I asked followup questions Friday night? Ordering dinner at a Chick-fil-A drive-through.
  • Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers reached a mind-boggling milestone Friday night — his 1,000th game as UGA coach. His first came on Nov. 10, 1979, an 88-69 win over Piedmont. His 1,000th was a 79-69 victory over Chattanooga. He’s now 752-248 as the Lady Bulldogs’ coach.
  • The Georgia men’s basketball team, 1-19 in opponents’ arenas over the past two seasons, is 1-0 on the road this season after Saturday’s come-from-behind, last-second victory at Saint Louis. The Dogs (3-0 overall) head next to the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, where they’ll open against Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Thursday.
  • A major signing last week for the Georgia men’s tennis program: Nathan Pasha of Atlanta — the top-ranked prospect in the state, No. 2 in the Southeast and No. 5 in the nation, according to TennisRecruiting.net -– signed a national letter of intent to attend UGA and play for the Bulldogs starting in 2011-12.

Dawgs easily cover 15 point spread. Will not even be that close. GT is pitiful. They are “bowl eligible” but not bowl worthy. They should stay home to avoid a losing 6-7 season record since they cannot beat UGA or win bowl games anymore.

I’m for Tech against Georgia. But, I really think Georgia will beat Tech in the vicinity of 35 points. If Duke gains over 400 yards offense on Tech what do you think GA will do?

Alot of points but it does sound about right with what GT defense does. I think both teams will score plenty of points. Neither team is that good but UGAG does have the over all better players. GA sucks and GT sucks so this game could go either way. Time for both teams to step up or shut up

This is the first game in the fight for Richt to keep his job after the 2011 season. The first three games are crucial. Lose two out of the next three and Richt is gone. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of UGA fans secretely would like to see him gone, whether they admit it or not.

I don’t believe UGA should be a heavy favorite over any team. I have a sense that everyone is taking this game as a win, like we did against Miss. State and Colorado, and we see what happened there. UGA better be ready to play and not start off in a fog.

You know, guys, I don’t know why we’d even play this game. I mean, the Dawgs have such superior talent. Throw in Todd Grantham, and the Dawgs can’t be beat. Fifteen points is modest. We will crush the bees, and next year, look out Urban, look out Stevie, look out Boise. Bring on Bama. Bring on the BCS NC. It’ll happen, because we’re that good.

In all my travels, I’m not sure I’ve ever come across a fan base whose self-perception is so far from reality. Georgia fashions itself a national power in the vein of Ohio State, USC, et. al., based primarily off one glorious three-year run 30 years ago with Herschel Walker.

Just an another example or how our AJC takes every opportunity possible to spread negative press on UGA….

The Associated Press releases a piece about R.Seymour punching Ben Rothlisberger yesterday during a game. In the AP piece, there is absolutely no mention of the University of Georgia… Not in the title, and nowhere in the article….

AJC ENQUIRER TABLOID however… Posts the piece and the title is “XUGAer Punches Rothlesberger”.

WHY IS THIS NECESSARY …??? RS has been gone from UGA of years.

This paper hurts UGA more than any issues we have going on at UGA among the team, coaches, and administration.

After completing the 22-yard throw to Emmanuel Sanders, Roethlisberger jumped into the arms of tackle Flozell Adams. Roethlisberger then began walking forward and appeared to say something to Seymour, who turned and struck the quarterback in the jaw with his open right hand.

As Roethlisberger went to his back, lineman Chris Kemoeatu grabbed Seymour. Both Seymour and Kemoeatu drew penalties, but only Seymour was ejected.

Seymour also was ejected Dec. 27 for hitting Browns running back Jerome Harrison after a play was over. Seymour was fined $10,000 for that infraction.

gbal: Just another example of how ignorant sidewalk UGA fans are.

Clicks are what makes the internet media go ’round: it’s what makes them money.

Most people in Atlanta don’t give a damn about the Raiders. Most people in Atlanta *DO* have an opinion on the mutts.

What do you think is gonna get more clicks on the AJC, “Raiders” or “UGA”??

It’s got nothing to do with ‘persecution’ and everything to do with money.

My friends I have seen the future.

We are doomed. The Gods are delivering a rain storm of biblical proportions this Saturday. Tech will run for 700 yards, Grantham will choke on on his red panties, UGA VIII will drown in his dawg house, Richt`s hair will need a perm.

But we will be the best 5 win team in the country and all of our players will be out of jail by Christmas.

This is only the beginning of the end.

As much as it pains me to say this.. Murray is going to rock our world. But, I just don’t think he will have to – because just like last year – Georgia can run the ball straight down our throats. Just like everyone else has this year. I’ll still watch, but CMR owns us. I don’t think this is a blowout though.. CPJ is a better coach then that.

I don’t know, I’m not willing to write Tech off that easily. If they had Nesbitt, it would be an entirely different story. Still, it’s a rivalry game. Throw out the records.

At this point in the dismal 2010 Bulldog season the only news I’m interested in reading about is what Richt is going to do with this staff after the season is over. Lots of rumours of changes.

Well Tech fans at least it won’t hurt as bad this year because you already know you’re going to take a beating, so no disappointment there. Plus, you don’t have to fret over the Dawgs tainting your once a decade ACC Championship like last year. I’m sure that Coach Fish Fry will be ready but somebody better wake up Al Groh and give him a shot of Geritol.

thUGA’s one great player only needs Murray to lob a ball in his vicinity. He’ll be gone next year, and thUGA will have another losing season. But by then the fans will be used to it.

You do realize that Vegas point spread is set by how much money is bet on each team.. More Ga fans betting pushes the spread wider. Meanwhile, how much will Ga have to pay the replacement for Louisville in 2012? That will cut into their payoff too. I do think the Boise State game will be good for Georgia, just to get them back in the national spotlight and an upset of Boise State would be a good start for their season.

Jborodawg

November 22nd, 2010
9:39 am

I dunno about that Vegas points spread; this is Tech-Georgia after all and anything can happen.

So, it’s out now that UGA paid Lewisburg to drop the home and home. (Coming out of UGA’s cut is the same as paying.)

I agree that without Nesbitt, it’s a different ball game…same thing if Murray doesn’t play; I too will be surprised if he doesn’t. But…it’s still the Tech game and you can toss the records. Careful Dawg fans…this one aint automatic. We should know that by now, the way this season has gone.

A win and a trip to the Liberty would be good. We need the bowl game to get those extra practices…to get ready for next year. Here’s hoping that AJ sees that he has unfinished business and comes back (but I’m not holding my breath).

Goooooo Dawgs! THWT!

Tech in Trouble this week AND next year….Nesbitt is gone and we’ve seen the future with the Duke game….and Tech won’t play Duke every week next year. Back to back weak recruiting classes, Tech will be no better on defense next year and woefully worse on offense. Too many realist Tech fans have posted these same comments…looks like Tech and UGA may be coach shopping for 2012…. Johnson ’s fish fry is over !

#10 in all time wins
#6 in stadium size
#3 in all time bowl wins and #5 in appearances
12 SEC titles
2 Heisman winners
2 National championships claim to seven
3 Maxwell winners
One of only 5 teams to win Rose/Orange/Cotton/ Sugar Bowls
Four #1 draft picks in NFL draft (5 if Walker didn’t leave early)
Multiple College and NFL Hall of Fame members compared to zero for Falcons

That is why UGA fans think they are a top ten program, it’s not just the Walker years.
