Georgia’s football team will open next season in Atlanta against Boise State, which has emerged as an improbable powerhouse in recent years.
The Bulldogs and Broncos will play on Sept. 3 in the Georgia Dome in the fourth annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, event organizers announced Friday. The game will be nationally televised in prime time on ABC or ESPN.
The Georgia-Boise State pairing marks the first time Atlanta’s season-opening event has included a team from inside the state or a team from outside the SEC/ACC footprint.
“It was too good an opportunity to turn down,” Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said.
Arranging the matchup required machinations involving a number of schools. The final contractual obstacles were cleared mid-afternoon Friday, game president Gary Stokan said.
To clear room on its schedule, Georgia canceled a contract with Louisville that had called for games against the Cardinals in 2011 (in Athens) and 2012 (in Louisville). The Chick-fil-A Game will pay Louisville $600,000 to buy out the contract with Georgia, Stokan said. North Carolina agreed to replace UGA on Louisville’s schedule in 2011 and 2012.
Boise State also had to alter its schedule to accommodate the game. The Broncos had been scheduled to open next season at Ole Miss, but the Boise State-Ole Miss game will be pushed back to 2014, when it will be played in the Georgia Dome as one of two “Kickoff” games that year. Alabama will face a team yet to be determined in the other 2014 game, Stokan said. BYU agreed to replace Boise State on Ole Miss’ 2011 schedule.
ESPN was instrumental, Stokan said, in finding ways to make the pieces fit.
In the end, Georgia traded home-and-home games against Louisville -– a series that did not fit McGarity’s scheduling philosophy – for a high-profile, close-to-home matchup against Boise State.
“We felt like it was important that we be on the national stage,” McGarity said. “We felt it would bring a level of excitement that we really need in our program.”
McGarity noted that the arrangement leaves Georgia with six games in Athens in 2011 but will allow a seventh home game to be added in 2012. He said Georgia is close to a deal with a non-BCS opponent, which he would not name, to play in Athens on the 2012 date that the Bulldogs previously were scheduled to be in Louisville.
Louisville said in a news release that Georgia’s decision came “much to the dismay of the Cardinals.”
“While we certainly would have preferred to keep the series with Georgia, we are pleased to open up the season next year at North Carolina and look forward to hosting them … in 2012,” Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said in the release. “We were thrilled when we secured a series with Georgia five years ago. We were approached to mutually agree to cancel this series, but we declined. Georgia exercised their option to cancel our series.”
The three previous Chick-fil-A Kickoff games matched an SEC team vs. an ACC team: Alabama vs. Clemson in 2008, Alabama vs. Virginia Tech in 2009 and LSU vs. North Carolina this year.
Boise State brings “a nationally known brand” to the game, Stokan said. The Broncos, ranked No. 3 in this week’s Associated Press poll, carried a 9-0 record and a 23-game winning streak into Friday night’s game against Fresno State.
The Georgia-Boise State game will change the dynamics of the 72,000-seat Georgia Dome for the event. While tickets were evenly distributed between the teams in the previous three Kickoff games, the planned allocation for this matchup is 7,500 tickets to Boise State and the rest of the available seats to Georgia, Stokan said.
Georgia will receive about $1.7 million and Boise State about $1.4 million for playing in the game, Stokan said.
As previously announced, N.C. State will face Tennessee and Auburn will play Clemson in two 2012 “Kickoff” games at the Dome.

I don’t think UGA is scared of Louisville? What have they done to make anybody scared of them?

Dear Plain Sickening – Your ability to cut and paste is excellent. But, before you go agreeing with someone’s post that you probably do not know ya better check the facts. Here they are.
UGA has produced more Rhodes Scholars than Tech.
An IM (Industrial Management) degree is equivalent to a basic business degree from UGA. Nothing great there. If he/she had, let’s say, a EE (Electrical Engineering), Aerospace, or Architecture degree then I would give them credit. IM is the “degree” that most football players at Tech study under. Also, check and see if Atlanta University also has a share program with Tech for Student-Athletes.
One more thing, the most embarrassing thing to come out of the state of Georgia, Jimmy Carter. Enough Said!

The Oregon series made NO sense – Damon Evans screwup
We ain’t recruiting any kid from Eugene.
But the Boise game DOES make sense.
We don’t go there for a home/home deal and recruiting wise we look really smart by playing a high profile game at the beginning of the year.
Why the hell do you think Saban scheduled the Clemson and VT games?
It’s a money/recruiting thang people.
And yes, I truly think UGA will win.

Oh yea, the Colorado series also made NO sense.
Damon Evans was an idiot.
McGarity already is showing how to run a program and I’m liking it.
(even Finebaum thought the Colorado series was stupid)

I find it interesting that BSU is losing 20 seniors and still wanted this game. Anyone know about their depth?

You’re on crack then. Sure, Murray will be a year older which should and more than likely will equate to better results, but he won’t have AJ Green….outside of him I honestly don’t think any of the other receivers are that good. Ealey and King will both be back but the results haven’t been there either. I thought by now I would have seen more promise out of Ealey and the same goes with King. If he spent as much time trying to improve himself as he does in handcuffs he’d be a fantastic athlete. He was the rave in high school but has been a big time flop since his arrival.

This game is an awesome idea…so glad we get to open the season with Boise St instead of Louisville…I really hope they win the NC this season…Would love to see a BS v O game…No interest in season Auburn play, win, and eventually forfeit/vacate championship because of Cam Newton controversy. Of course, they should have their hands full with Ala and SC for the next few weeks.

For all of you dawg fans who think we don’t have any talent just look back at the last few drafts—- We have had a #1 pick in each of the last 2 years & we have had 7 players taken in the rounds 1-5 of the last few NFL Draft’s.There’s a good chance you guys have not had that many earily round picks. Other then Stafford & Moreno you guys have rarely had anyone drafted in rounds 1-5 of the last few NFL Drafts & this year AJ Green will be the only one drafted earily & all you homers who think J Houston will go earily are mistaken because he was a non factor against Auburn. There tackles MANHANDLED him. He didn’t get close to sacking SCAM & the NFL Scouts have noticed.
Another thing that the NFL SCOUTS have noticed is that we have more NFL TALENT then you guys.

Dear The Plain Sickening Truth About UGA,
Please note that the person you quoted “worked for a Fortune 500 company”. Hmmmmm. Maybe he should have hired more UGA grads & he would still have a job, or maybe it would still be a Fortune 500 company? Who knows? It was a lame post.
As for the game, I’m looking forward to it. Yes, it would be nice to play in Sanford, but I’m looking at the up side. Saying prayers that AJ & Houston stay. AJ is a smart guy (before any of you Tech dorks say…he sold his jersey…big whoop…he’s just one that got caught) and I think he will stay. Hope, think, it’s all blending together right now. The “lockout” will play a big part in a lot of guys staying or going.
I believe it will be a good game, but I do wish other fans would quit coming on as BSU fans. You’re really not fooling anyone. I’m sure soooooo many BSU fans get on AJC Blogs, just as we do theirs. NOT.
Go Dawgs! Beat the Dorks! PLEASE!!!!

Yes y’all. Big game. Boise State fans celebrating. They’re tired of playing rinky dink teams. Hopefully UGA does not forget about Univ/Louisville. They want an UGA on home-and-away series. And they will pack the house to see Georgia.

Well another nonconference team to beat UGA 48 to 45. Defense wins championships! All I hear about is wide receivers. Coaches should be paid on the wins and not a salary. We all know once you get the income secured everything gets mediocre.
