Might UGA, Boise State meet in the Georgia Dome?

ATHENS – Might Georgia play Boise State in a season-opening football game next year in Atlanta?

As rumors swirled Thursday about such a possibility in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity and coach Mark Richt were mum on the matter.

“I just can’t comment on it at this time,” McGarity said Thursday night.

Asked how he would feel about playing Boise State in the Georgia Dome, Richt replied with a smile: “Hypothetically? Hypothetically, no comment.”

Richt said he was told not to comment on the matter, but he did offer a hint of a possible timetable for a decision when he was asked if playing in the Chick-fil-A Game would be important because of the recruiting benefit it has provided other SEC teams.

“I’ll tell you Monday,” he said.

Gary Stokan, who runs the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, has said often in the past that he would like to have Georgia in the game whenever it works for the school. Although he has two Kickoff games lined up for 2012, Stokan has been seeking a 2011 matchup for at least a couple of years. He could not be reached Thursday.

Stokan has noted in the past that matchups are extremely difficult to arrange, particularly for games as close at hand as 2011, because of all the variables involved. He has compared the process to a Rubik’s cube. For example, Georgia and Boise State likely would have to get out of existing contracts with Louisville and Ole Miss, respectively, in order to meet next season.

Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone posted on Twitter early Thursday:  “Will have a big football schedule announcement today.” Later, he posted: “Sorry about the delay announcing football’s future schedule. A lot of moving parts and ESPN has a few loose ends.”

Georgia currently has seven home games scheduled for next season, including the Louisville game.

Boise State is undefeated this season (9-0) and ranked No. 3 in this week’s AP poll.

By the way, Chick-fil-A this month opened its first restaurant in Idaho — on the Boise State campus.

Yes it would be a huge problem playing Boise if the boys don’t stay out of jail this summer.

We will consider this weekend a win if we can get though it with no arrest. Morale victory.

Boise State? Come on…did a much hyped team come to play us a few years back? We crushed them. Expect similar results, even with a mediocre UGA team.

As a fan I do not like playing more than one pansy a year-that is of course excluding our year end pansy team. I say play some talented teams and get some respect back. I know UGA fans hate wasting season ticket money on teams like Idaho St.

Murphy, totall agree with you on your last statement, and I respect your comments. You are the old school UGA when there was respect and excellence back in the 70’s, but now everyone just buries their heads in the sand and points to someone other than CMR.

Boise State has played one team this year and they won by 3. This was at the start of the season as well. Va Tech is much improved. They couldn’t beat them now. Boise State would get clobbered by the Dogs this year. I can’t understand why these Boise State fans keep telling themselves that they are so good…they play teams like we do when we need an out of conference win and they beat them 50-nothing. So what? The 5-6 dogs can do that. What does that say about Boise St?

Wow – certainly a lot of chest thumping on here this morning for a game that hasn’t been scheduled yet.
My favorite was the Tennessee fan who was boasting how tough UT’s OOC is compared to UGA’s. Didn’t UT pay to get out of a home and home with UNC? A basketball school from the ACC?
The claims that UGA would be unbeaten with BSU’s schedule are also nuts – a team that loses to Colorado can lose to Nevada or Fresno State – not to mention Oregon State and VT

I think after this year we should schedule our three weakest opponents , non conference , the first three game to get the team ready for competition and any suspensions out of the way. I hate playing South Carolina every year the second game. Most of the time we don’t even have our starters set by then and some of our best players are being suspended for selling things on E-BAY.
If we play Boise it would be better to play them after a few games or late in the season. I’m not scared to play them but you are taking a huge chance playing such a formidable opponent that early.

75-76-Dawg – What you are talking about is the UF model. Schedule 3 very week OOC teams at home to go with the game against FSU and the SEC games. McGarity said that is the model he wants as well (substituting GT for FSU). I am a little surprised at the rumors on UGA-BSU at the Ga Dome, but maybe he is trying to give the program a jolt after this year’s poor record.

So for all of you braniacs; exactly WHAT does the Boise/UGA game from a couple of years ago have to do with this matchup? I must not have gotten the memo that says “hey…if you beat a team a couple of years ago, that is a precurser to what will happen the next time you play even if it is a few years down the road”. Well, if we are going to bring up past results, how about when Utah SPANKED Alabama a couple of years ago? OHHHH…I forgot…”Bama didn’t really want to be there”. That was the SEC apologist response for that one.

Being a little more serious, I can not afford season tickets right now with three kids in college but if I had season tickets I would not be happy if UGA took away one of my home games since I would have already bought next years season pass and you look forward to seven games instead of six. Season ticket holder would definitely have a complaint.

I think CMR should simplify the playbook and play as many freshmen as possible , that would help recruiting the most. If LeMay is ready I think we should play a two quarterback system and use both LeMay’s and Murray’s strengths. That is what Florida has done and since they don’t have a dominate QB like we don’t that is not a bad thing. I like competition between two QB’s , it brings out the best in both players. But only if LeMay is worthy and ready.

It’s a no-win thing for the Dawgs. If they win, it means that Boise St really is just a small college team that can’t hang with the big boys. If they lose, they lose.

Exactly Blue. Also in 2005, Boise St lost to Fresno St by 20 points. In 2006 they beat them by 24. They lost to Oregon St by 3 in 2005. In 2006 they beat them by 28, and Oregon St was a much better team in 2006 then in 2005. I don’t know why people struggle with the concept of some teams getting better year after year and other teams getting worse.

Boise State is a mediocre team in one of the worst conferences out there. Of course they are unbeaten after they squeaked by Va Tech. This UGA team would be unbeaten as well. Let’s not forget that UGA plays against the best teams in the nation almost every weekend. Boise St plays against a bunch of chumps. It is really hard to imagine that anyone would think they could beat this UGA team.

The last time Boise rolled into town all of the national media thought the high powered potato boys would kick the Dawgs all over the field. The vaunted Bronco qb, named Zabransky, was 0-4 with 4 picks if I remember correctly. Second half saw him on the sidelines, towel over his head and completely shellshocked at the speed of SEC defenses. Bring the ponies on!

AUBURN’S SLIPPERY SLOPE

• January, 2010 Byrne (MSU)reports to SEC

• SEC responds wanting more information, into allegations

• MSU waits because they are working on eligibility’s issues relating to their Basketball program, currently in season

• SEC contacts NCAA

• NCAA-SEC get with MSU

• During this time, the Church managed by Newton was in financial trouble and facing eviction but suddenly had enough cash to do extensive renovations to meet building codes.

• Newton’s father owned a small trucking company with two drivers. After Newton signed they were flushed with so many contracts that a dozen drivers were hired.

• OCTOBER 4TH, 2010. McGregor, Geddie, and others with political ties Lowder and Co. are indicted and arrested, based on taped conversations held during the previous 13 months.

• 10/21/2010 Dan Mullen goes on Rivals radio ASKED… how close were you to getting Cam at MSU …Dan Mullen: “thats a long long story …that be in the book.”

• Nov 4th, Bond releases statement “During the 2009 football season, I was contacted by a former football teammate, who represented to me that he was speaking for the Newton camp. He told me that Cam Newton wanted to play at Mississippi State, but that a specified payment would have to be made. I reported the conversation to the Mississippi State Athletic Department. I was told by the Athletic Department that Mississippi State would not respond to the overture that was made to me, and that Mississippi State would continue to recruit Cam Newton as it does any other football recruit.”

• MSU: “We are comfortable that representatives of Mississippi State University’s interests conducted themselves appropriately and in compliance with all NCAA by-laws. Mississippi State is committed to operating our athletics programs within the rules of the NCAA and Southeastern Conference, and we expect those affiliated with our program to continue to do the same.”

• Cecil Newton, the quarterback’s father, denied the allegations to ESPN.com. “If Rogers tried to solicit money from Mississippi State, he did it on his own, without our knowledge,” he told the website.

• Chizik: “I’m standing up here on a very important week trying to defend something that quite frankly is garbage,” Chizik told reporters. “Is there a wizard behind the curtain? I don’t know. Is there one, is there two, are there 10? I don’t know and I don’t care. But what I do care about is coming to the defense of not only a great football player but a great human being who comes from a great family.”

• Nov 8th, Foxsports.com reports that Newton was caught cheating three times at Florida.

• Nov 9th, Auburn AD called cheating allegations “sad”. “Cam is by all accounts a great kid.”

• Nov 9th, ESPN.com’s Joe Schad reported that “two sources who recruit for Mississippi State” said in separate phone conversations that Cam Newton’s decision to commit to a school “would be part of a pay-for-play” plan.

• FBI gets involved in the MSU portion of the investigation, as they are already well trenched in the Auburn/Lowder/McGregor and friends side.

• Nov 10th, Once the NCAA enforcement staff became involved, Mississippi State University cooperated fully with its investigation. MSU is confident the SEC office has managed this process consistent with its established procedures and the university is committed to the conference’s ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with SEC and NCAA rules.

• Nov 11th, “The SEC never received information from MSU about phone calls with the Newtons about pay for play,” SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said in an e-mail Thursday.

• Nov 11th, Bond releases a statement. “My story hasn’t changed. I absolutely talked with Kenny Rogers, and there are phone records that will show that.” Bond said he’s scheduled to meet with the FBI on Tuesday and plans to turn over his phone records and anything else they ask for at that point. He said the FBI reached out to his attorney earlier this week wanting to talk with him about the Newton situation, in particular if kids were being shopped out to colleges. That meeting was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was postponed by the FBI until next Tuesday. “Until I speak with the FBI, I’d prefer not to say much more,”

• Nov 11th Rogers admits, after previously denying, that in fact Cecil Newton had asked for money to recruit his son to play at MSU.

• Nov 11th Bill Bell says he was contacted and asked for payment by Cecil Newton and he has been interviewed by the NCAA

• Nov 12th Jay Jacobs says “We aren’t commenting on it”

• Bond to meet FBI on November 16th, later said “This has nothing to do with Auburn, Absolutely nothing to do with Auburn. The FBI does not want anyone selling the right to players”

• Rodgers to meet with NCAA around November 16th

• Nov 12th, Cecil Newton admits to asking for money from MSU in exchange for Cam to play there.

• Nov 12th, ESPN reports that a source stated that he was contacted by an emotional Cam Newton stating his regret that he would not be playing for MSU, as his father had chosen Auburn because “the money was too much”.

• Nov 13th, Despite all of the above evidence, Auburn Still Plays Newton

We know that tech does not have the guts. Please, we have done it before and we will do it again. OOC and conference schedules are much tougher than the techies. You have no bone in this debate so please go back to your own board and worry about the spanking that Duke is getting ready to lay on you.

Funny that when ever there are to be big games at the Dome for the “Classic” tech is never mentioned. There is a reason for that. Y’all stink! Yes, even worse than UGA this year!

Preparing for a one time game is one thing. Playing week to week in the SEC is another due to that little thing called attrition. Can BSU survive playing every week in the SEC… NO! They don’t have the speed, athleticism, or depth. They would be destroyed. After a tough game against Nevada, they can hide their star WR, DE, or LB against New Mexico State, Idaho, or Utah State. They’re not hiding them against Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, etc. etc. But one thing they do is prepare well for one-time big games. I think playing us next year would be a good game. I don’t think we’d see the same BSU team we did a few years ago. I’m all for it but I’d rather do it in Athens. Why not play in the best football venue in Georgia?

Dude we have been in the top ten 6 of the last 10 years. We finished the last decade with the 4th best overall record in CFB.

I love the idiots who are kicking us when we are down and saying things like UGA has never been good. Mediocre program etc. Thats all crap and they know it.

UGA is 11th all time in CFB wins
UGA has the third most SEC Championships all time (12)
