ATHENS – Might Georgia play Boise State in a season-opening football game next year in Atlanta?
As rumors swirled Thursday about such a possibility in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity and coach Mark Richt were mum on the matter.
“I just can’t comment on it at this time,” McGarity said Thursday night.
Asked how he would feel about playing Boise State in the Georgia Dome, Richt replied with a smile: “Hypothetically? Hypothetically, no comment.”
Richt said he was told not to comment on the matter, but he did offer a hint of a possible timetable for a decision when he was asked if playing in the Chick-fil-A Game would be important because of the recruiting benefit it has provided other SEC teams.
“I’ll tell you Monday,” he said.
Gary Stokan, who runs the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, has said often in the past that he would like to have Georgia in the game whenever it works for the school. Although he has two Kickoff games lined up for 2012, Stokan has been seeking a 2011 matchup for at least a couple of years. He could not be reached Thursday.
Stokan has noted in the past that matchups are extremely difficult to arrange, particularly for games as close at hand as 2011, because of all the variables involved. He has compared the process to a Rubik’s cube. For example, Georgia and Boise State likely would have to get out of existing contracts with Louisville and Ole Miss, respectively, in order to meet next season.
Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone posted on Twitter early Thursday: “Will have a big football schedule announcement today.” Later, he posted: “Sorry about the delay announcing football’s future schedule. A lot of moving parts and ESPN has a few loose ends.”
Georgia currently has seven home games scheduled for next season, including the Louisville game.
Boise State is undefeated this season (9-0) and ranked No. 3 in this week’s AP poll.
By the way, Chick-fil-A this month opened its first restaurant in Idaho — on the Boise State campus.

My point was to the blogger who says FSU has done nothing without Richt. Where is FSU without him today and where is uga with him? uga , wont play Boise State because that is not a win in the bag. uga doesnt play OOC games unless it is at home or a cake walk. After this season its back to the Homers telling us how they are going to win the SEC and go on from there all while having less of a team than this year.We all know UT, UF will be better. We do know as well uga will NOT be.

Jeffrey bowden is the latest in along line of excuses.
Richt left and took the program with him.
You can deny it all day long.
You need to let it go.
Your program is 7-3 in the ACC which is equivalent to 3-7 in the SEC.
Enjoy

In ‘04 Boise State was 11-0, but lost to Louisville 44-40 in the Liberty Bowl. ‘05 they came to Athens and were beaten 48-13, but UGA could’ve hung 60 points on them that day…Richt called off the Dawgs in the 3rd qtr. BSU lost3 games that year, and their home bowl game to finish 9-4. ‘06 is when they beat Oklahoma in their bowl game. They were undefeated that year.
If they play in the Dome to begin next year, I’ll put my money on the Dawgs. Bring ‘em on.

Not a good idea for the Dawgs. Remember we ALWAYS have several players
out for the first game due to having so many thugs on the team.
Better stick to our usual patsy unless we want this to backfire.

Yeah…wonder why UGA won’t go play Boise St out west? Might it have something to do with playing on blue turf, in a 1,200-seat stadium, in a town about the size of Statesboro? Maybe if Dawgs did real good in that one, they could also travel to New Mexico to play Lower Southeastern Monastary…Remember a few years ago when it was widely believed that we couldn’t slow down Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl? Gimme a break. Bring Boise back to the SE so we can bring’em back down to earth again…

DawgLex,
We’ll see won’t we?
FSU will beat UF and show you how it is done.
GT won’t win, Nesbitt is out.
Clemson will beat USCe in Clemson. They have a great defense.
Didn’t Clemson play Auburn in their house to the wire and would have won not for a missed field goal? You know, the team that destroyed you guys by 18 points or something like that?
In honor of Boss Hog, please pick up your garbage at your tailgating spot next weekend. I am sure the UGA AD is tired of the 3 feet of trash being left.
I love Mark Richt, i hope he stays at UGA a long time, he deserves it, he might not win the MNC but he makes men out of boys.

Still waiting, You are full of crap. We were playing Boise State when they were first making their move and no one else dared. We also played AZ State out West when they were coming off a PAC-10 championship, Central Michigan coming off a MAC championship, Oklahoma State on the rise, etc., etc., etc. This is the first year Georgia took a breather (like everyone else) with their OOC schedule. Who do you pull for? You are full of crap man!

Oh, c’mon! The Chick-fil-A committee will pick a team with a winning record to play in their showcase game, not some limp-wrist program like UGA has become. Maybe they can get Auburn, Arkansas, Mississippi State to represent the SEC. UGA would be a disaster.

Yes -we lost to OK STATE
Yes – we lost to Colorado
If we get beat….. we get beat.
So what – opening with a very good oppoenent will benefit the rest of the season as the staff and team will have more urgency about them during summer camp.

Disregarding all the Tech idiots posting 70-7 Boise predictions. This is a great thing for college football. Georgia will stomp Boise early, thereby removing their fraudulent claim to deserving a shot in the NC.
Sure Boise can sneak up on Oklahoma in a bowl game most of the Sooner players would have rather not even played. But when they play motivated powers that are actually interested in playing, they gets smashed. Just like they did in Athens a few years back.

This has no upside for UGA and they should stick with their commitment to Louisville. If they win — “they should they are from the SEC” if the lose “see UGA is just not that good anymore” and we start 0-1 (ie like we did after the okie state game). As a Falcon Club Seat holder — would love it. As a UGA fan — hate it.

dawg one, the game won’t end up costing ga $ cuz the tv payoff will be much larger. so dollar wize, a net gain. the notoriety of the matchup will be huge, both teams will benefit from the exposure. a bsu fan from way back, I was at the big games (ga, oky, tcu and vt, as well as OU and OSU). should be a good game that everyone can talk about for years…let it happen and be happy! and i don’t think losing at most 4 on each side of the ball will hurt the team noticeably next year. they have some other barn burner receivers to step in.

Allow this UGA grad to show a little respect…FSU, GT, and Boise St all are respectable programs and fun to watch. At the current time FSU and GT are down…in a few years they’ll be back. Boise St is a good team BUT there are a couple hundred high school teams all across the country that go undefeated and that is not sufficient to be a national champ. Boise St DOES control who they play and for over a decade the best they have scheduled is UGA and VTech. Their most prolific offense was no match for a UGA a few yrs back. Some say give ‘em a chance. Well that doesn’t work because every year there are a dozen schools that can say give us a chance. The season’s purpose is to determine who is the best. If BS wants to be considered as a true champ they have to play competitive teams. No less than 25 other teams if given BS’s schedule would also be undefeated.

I do wonder why the Chick Fil A bowl would push for this. A middle of the road SEC team that is losing talent and a Boise St team that probably wont be quite as good next year after they lose a lot of talent. It seems like they could get a better game then that. It would probably be a team ranked somewhere between 10-20 and an unranked team. Not exactly a marquee matchup.

Same reaction to all the invites sent out to the “big blue blood schools” from Boise State. Must be the blue field. It surely can’t be that they are afraid to get the asses handed to them. Wait until Boise has a rebuild year I guess. That would be in the year 2050.

48-13. That was the last time they played a real game against a top-flight team. Yeah, I know they squeaked by VaTech while surrendering 30 points, but VaTech lost to James Freaking Madison the next week.
Boise never plays anybody, and they play their home games on a field that exactly matches the color of their home uniforms. That’s disgraceful. Know what, invite Boise into the SEC. Vandy needs some bragging rights.

All right Dogs Smell — here is just a quick look: This year TN has UT Martin, Oregon, UAB & Memphis. GA has Louisiana Layfayette, Colorado, Idaho St., and GA Tech. So, by virtue of Oregon on your schedule — you guys have it tougher this year. Last year, you guys had W. Kentucky, UCLA, Ohio Univ., and Memphis. We had Oklahoma St., Arizona St., TN tech and GA Tech — our OOC schedule was by far tougher. In 2008 you guys had UCLA, UAB, Northern Ill., and Wyoming. We had GA Southern, Central Mich., Arizona State and GA Tech — once again ours was tougher. And this is only looking at the last three years to speed things up. The further you go back — UGA’s OOC looks even tougher. Next year you guys have Montana, Cinncinnati, Buffalo, and Middle TN. Looks like ya’ll are taking a breather next year — and boy does your program need it. We have Lousiville, Coastal Carolina, New Mexico State and GA Tech — so once again our OOC is tougher. So shut your pie hole until you know what the heck you’re talking about.

Sure we’ll play Boise State. It might even offer Mr. Green an excuse to hang around another year…play in what should be a pretty high-profile game and make up for the games he cost us with his ‘poor judgment’. I’m not real optimistic about that but maybe. Plus, as has been said, such a game should provide more incentive for four and five star recruits to ‘hire on’ – particularly if they think they’ll not be red-shirted. Of course if it were left up to me I’d rather be playing USC. We need to get another shot at that Kiffen guy.
How good we’ll be next year? Who knows, but it’s for sure we better figure out how to better utilize whatever speed we’ve got on the defense if we’re gonna have to chase those waterbugs around like we had to West Va that time.

Dogs Smell: So apparently playing at preseason ranked #9 Oklahoma State and at preseason ranked #15 Arizona State qualifies as “cake walks?”
I don’t get how we’ve suddenly become a “middle of the road” SEC team when we’ve had two bad seasons. An 8-5 record in 2009 is bad by our standards but realistically a lot of teams would like to have that many wins in a season. People say it’s because we haven’t won the SEC/division recently but we won it in 2005 and were co-chamions of the East in 2007 (you can debate if you want that Tenn won the East but the SEC officially states that we were Co-champions).

I also like how Boise fans think they are world beaters just because they beat one or two BCS opponents a year. Statistically in the Petersen era you guys have only beaten BCS opponents by an average of 6.7 points per game and you guys want to play for the national championship? Trying playing a full schedule of BCS opponents and with those numbers you might go 7-5.
