Might UGA, Boise State meet in the Georgia Dome?

ATHENS – Might Georgia play Boise State in a season-opening football game next year in Atlanta?

As rumors swirled Thursday about such a possibility in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity and coach Mark Richt were mum on the matter.

“I just can’t comment on it at this time,” McGarity said Thursday night.

Asked how he would feel about playing Boise State in the Georgia Dome, Richt replied with a smile: “Hypothetically? Hypothetically, no comment.”

Richt said he was told not to comment on the matter, but he did offer a hint of a possible timetable for a decision when he was asked if playing in the Chick-fil-A Game would be important because of the recruiting benefit it has provided other SEC teams.

“I’ll tell you Monday,” he said.

Gary Stokan, who runs the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, has said often in the past that he would like to have Georgia in the game whenever it works for the school. Although he has two Kickoff games lined up for 2012, Stokan has been seeking a 2011 matchup for at least a couple of years. He could not be reached Thursday.

Stokan has noted in the past that matchups are extremely difficult to arrange, particularly for games as close at hand as 2011, because of all the variables involved. He has compared the process to a Rubik’s cube. For example, Georgia and Boise State likely would have to get out of existing contracts with Louisville and Ole Miss, respectively, in order to meet next season.

Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone posted on Twitter early Thursday:  “Will have a big football schedule announcement today.” Later, he posted: “Sorry about the delay announcing football’s future schedule. A lot of moving parts and ESPN has a few loose ends.”

Georgia currently has seven home games scheduled for next season, including the Louisville game.

Boise State is undefeated this season (9-0) and ranked No. 3 in this week’s AP poll.

By the way, Chick-fil-A this month opened its first restaurant in Idaho — on the Boise State campus.

Hey guys…………. its doesn’t matter how long or how well prepared you are…..VT with several other outside coaches spent over 6 months breaking down Boise State and still came up with a loss. I’d suggest if it is scheduled, you start that night………… to have a chance at keeping it respectable.

Chicken SHats- Whoa… you watched the game. I realize you don’t know what defense is or does, but when your QB is pressured by a real defense it makes him “throw so off”.

I’ve learned not to be optimistic about the dogs anymore.
Probably a bad move as Boise would expose us in the first game of the season and make recruits realize early in the process they need to look elsewhere if they want to win.
I’d say lets play Ga State instead. Richt & Co would make it a game, but UGA should be able to win and thus not hurt recruiting.

Boise ST 7 – UGA 45 last time they met.

Hawaii 10 – UGA 38 or something last time they met.

Boise’s ex coach – just fired at Colorado after going to Coach in a real conference.

Yes Boise may win, just like Appl St. may win in Gainseville this weekend, or Troy may win in Columbia, but no way Boise is a better team. They would get slaughtered playing in a big conference on a consistent basis.

If that’s not true, why would they have to get out of their Miss. contract to play UGA? Why not play them both in the same year?

Why not sign the contract Nebraska has put on the table, since you say no teams will play you for the 1m per game you demand?

Why did Boise let Utah out of their game next season, since Boise is joining the frightening Mountain West?

Face it – Boise if they played in a real conference would forfeit after 8 games because of injuries and lack of interest in football. I’m so sick and tired of these charlatans.

If they play in a BCS Title game, every conference should disband. UGA should then schedule 1 halfway decent team, that is notorious for slow starts like VPI. Then a mid- major like Oregon ST. and then play 10 Vanderbilt, Duke, New Mexico St., Idaho types, and go 12-0 every year like the losers at Boise.

No wonder they can play well in Jan., they’ve stayed fresh all season. What a joke, wake up people!

Sorry guys this isn’t the same Boise team that was 8 yrs in 1-aa that you were so proud about beating.

This is the best team in the country for the last 2 yrs. Next yr will be a different team, but with Kellen Moore and the depth we have, its debatable whether or not next yrs team will be as good, the same, or better……………. Be careful what you wish for, teams that play Boise either become better after(Oregon) or worse. Its science.

UGA should go independent, play Boise’s schedule and whine and cry about being in the BCS title game every year. And since the wear and tear of playing real teams every week won’t be there, when we finally do play a good team, we can do well, because we’re not dinged up….

The match up has happened recently. Are you kidding? Must be kidding. I’m not saying Boise couldn’t pull an upset, but there’s no way it’s a blowout that way. The other way around, maybe. Boise blowing out the Dawgs, no way. We aren’t Idaho, Wyoming, or Hawaii.

The biggest downside to Boise next year is that they are losing two really talented wide receivers to the NFL. They will still have one of the best QB’s in the country, he will just have a few less weapons at his disposal. It would be an interesting game. I wonder how much money McGarity would demand to do this though. He has already said he doesn’t want to play anymore tough out of conference games.

Rob- I’m pretty sure that they beat Choklahoma after we blew them out. One of my friends was pointing out that that was Boise’s first game on a big stage…on one that they weren’t used to. It seems like they’ve beaten just about every top team they’ve played since. I;m not saying they’ll beat us. I think we should be better, but I just hate opening up against a tough opponent on the first game….after losing our SR.s, & all the players we lose every yr. that leave early for the NFL.

Boise is so pathetic they have to set up games with the schedule like Nevada to stay undefeated.

Boise can beat any team in the country on any given Saturday, granted. So can App. St., ask Michigan in the Big House. But they could not play a demanding schedule. If they could they would, instead of scheduling Toledo and the likes in the non-conference schedule.

Hey Boise, play Michigan St., Nebraska, and Ga in the same year, like on three consecutive weeks, and if you win those 3, we’ll see about your claim to a Title. Wimps.

Great. So we spend our off season thinking about all the hype of opening with Boise State, a non conference team, instead of preparing for the more important second game with South Carolina. The new AD was correct. A loss to SC is the same as one to Florida.

Let’s see Boise plays in the pathetic WAC, and then schedules this for non-conference:
2010 – VT
Wyoming
Toledo
Oregon State

Boy that’s downright frightful compared to the beasts they scheduled non-conference in ‘09:
UC Davis, Tulsa, Bowling Green, Miami of Ohio, and Oregon – whooo frightful I say. Scary.

How about ‘08 non-conference. Must be fierce to fight for a BCS bowl while playing in the pathetic WAC, right?
Idaho State, Bowling Green, Southern Miss, and Oregon. Wow, if UGA played that schedule, and then had to play in the fearsome WAC, they’d probably just cancel football. Whooo, I’m scared just writing it.

Pathetic losers. Get a schedule, and then you can play in the BCS. The system is broke if a bunch of wannabe’s like Boise get in the game.

I remember ”07 when Hawaii was coming off pounding Boise 39-27, undefeated. Then Hawaii was as obliterated as I’ve ever seen a supposedly good D-1 team, 41-10, with the QB literally begging to quit being crushed, and mercifully taken out early in the 4th with the game well in hand by UGA.. I think the score was 41-3 at the time, and then we put the scrubs in.

Ughh! Anyone in the SEC but Georgia. The game I hoped would never be played again. Pretty exciting for Boise State fans if this happens though. You don’t know how bad that loss still stings this town. Would be a good game too… a little early to tell, but I suspect Boise won’t be as good next year and Georgia can only get better, right?

UGA has nothing to gain by playing this game. I’m on board with McGarity’s plan. It has worked for UF and it is working for AU. Go undefeated in the SEC and you go to the MNC. If you win, well you should have but you lose and you end up like VT. We need to be focused on beating USC not playing some over-hyped match-up.

Oooh….tough call. Louisville would be a slam dunk against a D-1 school (yes I believe we will improve next year.)

What I know about Boise State is that they are growing and improving by the day. I’m in the Sacramento area and the kids at Grant High (local power, nationally ranked) now say they want to attend Boise. Not USC, not Cal, Not Oregon, but Boise.

It’s rather far-flung with little night life and very little ethnic diversity, but, sure enough, Boise is becoming a sexy pick for 4 and 5 star recruits on the west coast.

I really can’t say I want that game, but I know our defense will be much improved next year……

Nothing to Gain… If Georgia can’t beat Boise State in the Georgia Dome you can forget about going undefeated in the SEC. I don’t agree with scheduling soft OOC crap. It hasn’t worked for Florida… they still can’t go undefeated in the SEC, they have just been lucky there weren’t two other undefeated BCS teams.

Oh, I see why Boise would have to drop Ole Miss now if they pick up UGA. There’s now way they could play: Toledo, Tulsa, Fresno State, and Nevada in the non-conference with UGA and Ole Miss. That’s just far too brutal of a schedule. Down right frightening, scary if you asked me. Especially being in the Mountain West next season, and having to play the fearsome likes of New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado St., and UNLV. Even San Diego St. and the Air Force Academy. Shiverrrs! Well, at least they’ll play TCU every year, and that will give them some competition. They’ll probably have to set up an off-week every year before that brutal showdown.

Boise Dawg

November 18th, 2010

StevenW it has nothing to do with being afraid to schedule Ole Miss and Georgia. It is about finding another team with an open date. Truthfully the only reason this is happening is Ole Miss found a replacement in BYU and Boise is going after a bigger pay check. Ole Miss was supposed to pay $900,000 for their game, Boise State can make $2M for a game in the Dome. ESPN is putting all this together.

StevenW

November 18th, 2010

Boise Dawg – It has worked for UF, LSU and ‘Bama. They have won the last 4 National championships playing weak sisters of the poor OOC, while we’ve been playing Arizona ST, Okie St. Colorado and the likes.

Those teams played 1 tough OOC team and 3 weak sisters. Damon Evans was trying to make us a national brand by having UGA play only 1 weak sister per year.

People forget, we already play a very good Ga. Tech team OOC every year – 14 straight bowls for them – and CPJ is definitely no pushover.
