UGA’s Houston, Auburn’s Fairley among finalists for Nagurski Trophy

Georgia outside linebacker Justin Houston, who leads the SEC in sacks, today was named one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which goes to college football’s top defensive player each year.

Among the other finalists: Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley.

In fact, all five finalists are from the SEC and ACC. Houston and Fairley are joined by LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers and Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly.

The award is presented by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The winner will be named on Dec. 6.

Georgia has had only one Nagurski Trophy winner: Champ Bailey in 1998.

Houston, a junior from Statesboro, has 10 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss this season.

The rest of the country (those without UGA on their shirt) recognize how great Fairley is.

He had a cheap shot in the UGA game – 1. That’s all, 1.

He has 2 personal fouls on him all year, but the UGA cry-babies wanna call him and Auburn dirty. UGA HAS MORE PERSONAL FOULS THIS YEAR THAN AUBURN – SO STOP CALLING AUBURN DIRTY, YOU EXCUSE MAKERS!!!

UGA forgets they always lead in penalties, arrests and undiscipliness. They also ignore that they tried to end Nesbitt’s career last year with blatant cheap-shots.

Fairley exhibited anything BUT award-winning character Saturday night. Some Auburn fan claimed his helmet cracks on Murray were “clean hits.” I know that in some misguided circles, those hits were applauded; however, if you’re trying to win by seriously injuring someone else, that tells me you don’t have what it takes to win by skill (and that goes for any of my Dawgs, too) and therefore don’t deserve an award.

I hope the judges take that under consideration.

The dirty play of the game came from thUGA when several linemen (unsuccessfully) went after Fairly out of frustration for losing badly in the second half. THAT is what started the fisticuffs and most of the thUGA team to come onto the field.

Not only is thUGA an undisciplined team, but they and their fans are poor sports.

If Fairley played for thUGA all you rednecks would love him. thUGA has the most arrests in the SEC counting players, coaches and administrators, but you try to point the finger at Auburn and Florida as being bad programs. You couldn’t take care of Fairley on the field, even when you tried to be dirty. Losers. thUGA is historically a cheating program. All the arrest, but none of the victories!

Hey, Mr. “Fairley’s great”. get your facts straight.

1. This year, we don’t have more personal fouls than Auburn.
2. We have cut our penalties in hafl.
3. 9 of those arrests were for stupid traffic violations. The DUI guy was kicked off the team.
4. here is why Newton should be kicked off the team: if it allowed to stand that his dad took money to get him to come to Auburn (EVEN IF NEWTON KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT), then look at the pandora’s box you have created: family members can now pimp out their kids to the highest bidder.

Look, know you are an Auburn homer, but you can’t allow this to happen, and then next week at your local Shriner’s meeting talk about the loss of morality in the country.

It is hypocritical.

Richt will have his hands full next year trying to keep his job. He was going to get a pass this year from the money people no matter what. The landscape changes in 2011. I heard one of those such people make the statement that in 2011, Richt would have to “win all of’em he’s supposed to, plus a couple he’s not”. Richt has placed too much emphasis on signing players with the NFL’s and their own instant money success, such as Stafford, Moreno, and Green. He has not recruited players who have UGA’s best interest at heart. Next year he will be hard pressed to seriously contend for the East, and there would have to be a very good reason, not just another excuse if they do not achieve this goal. That may be a very, very tall order with what he will have to work with player wise in 2011. Green needs to stay at UGA another year, because in his own words he said he feels he owes the Georgia people more because of his bad decision with the jersey sale. The heat has been pretty much left off of Richt this year, but it will come quickly in 2011 after having been given two years with 2009 and 2010. Most of the large contributors expect to get something worth while out of it’s big recruits, and I mean for the University of Georgia not the NFL.

Let’s back our thoughts up with facts. “thUGA is historically a cheating program” Are you retarded? Also, Florida has been the most often arrested program in the sec under urban. Look it up!

Fairly is a beast – and the only cheap shot I saw was the late spear on Murray.

It’s up to the refs to control the game – and Auburn put a physical beat down on UGA. OUtsocred UGA 42-10 in teh last 3 quarters . Kind of like the physical beat down UGA put on Hawaii. Most Hawaii fans were not to complimentary of UGA’s physical play – but that’w typical when you are on the losing end of a beat down.

And for the record – where was Justin Houston in the Auburn game – don’t recall him making any plays.

AU fans crack me up. You all act as though UGA is the first and only program this year to complain about Fairley’s dirty cheapshot hits. When you put your helmet in a players chest and it’s a clean hard hit no one has any issue with that. When you pick up a QB and TRY to drive his throwing shoulder into the ground more than once that’s DIRTY.

The stench that is coming from AU and it’s program right now can be smelled all the way in China.

Karma’s a b*tch and she’s p*ssed by what she sees going on with the AU program right now.

AU fans hope you have plenty of kleenex, you’re going to need it when the FBI, NCAA, and Karma get through with you’re program.

BTW the FBI has a 97% conviction rate, so when they get involved in a case there’s a VERY good chance SOMEONE is going to jail.

@ Millennium Falcon retard –
Do you know what “thUGA is historically a cheating program” means? It means the university cheats for the athletics programs to get better players and keep them eligible. Jan Kemp and Vince Dooley admitting having a program for 10 years to allow athletes to stay eligible to play football. Yes, these players played for your ONLY National Championship team and most didn’t graduate, some couldn’t read/write but played at thUGA for 4 years. It is well documented, go read about it. Then 15 years later you hire Jim Harrick and his son creating a second academic fraud case against your sorry school. thUGA cheats, it is who you are! These are the facts you are chosing to ignore.

There’s a difference in being aggressive and getting to the QB late and what Fairley did which was just tee-off on the QB LOOONNG after the ball had gone.

Also, I don’t recall ever seeing any of the above mentioned players pick up a player and pile drive them with the intent to purposely injure them. Fairley’s INTENT to injure was obvious to anyone who watched the game other than AU homers.

Again there is a difference between hard-nosed, hard-hitting football and taking cheapshots in an attempt to injure or take out a player.

The following is from an article from the Ledger-Enquirer.

See the link at the end for the complete article. Funny thing is when you get to the comments section Arkansas and LSU fans basically say a lot of the same things UGA fans are saying now. How telling, especially some of the comments from Fairley and his coaches.

Fairley sprang out of his stance, split two defenders and bear hugged quarterback Jordan Jefferson, lifting him up briefly before slamming him to the Jordan-Hare Stadium turf for a sack.
“That’s normal for Nick,” linebacker Craig Stevens said. “Nothing out of the blue.”

Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett left with a concussion after a Fairley hit and LSU’s Jarrett Lee left briefly with a wrist injury.

“Coach Rocker always asks me, ‘Why are you always trying to slam the quarterback?’” Fairley said. “I’m like, when you’re in a fight, you slam to take the heart out of (them).”
“Eventually that starts to build up in their minds,” Chizik said.

Ah, my favorite quote of me from that article, thanks Go Dawgs! Mission Accomplished.

That appeared to be the case late in the game, when Lee, instead of making a move for the first-down marker, was tackled on his way out of bounds on a crucial fourth-down play.

“He got tired of it,” Fairley said. “He was like, ‘Let’s get out of here. Let’s go home.’ That’s the kind of mindset it looked like he had.”

Why wasn’t that punk that was trying to punch me on the ground ejected? Hmmm?

The SEC told me not to hit players late anymore and if I did, I could be ejected. They also addressed my issues about chop blocks like the ones Georgia was doing and they said they would eject offensive lineman if they repeatedly chop blocked. I asked, then how come Georgia players weren’t ejected? They said, because they didn’t see all of the chop blocks when they happened.

I am a died hard georgia fan. We should not be mad at fairley, because he could not cheap shot our quarterback because our offensive line was less than offensive. They were terrible and he made us look bad. I wish we had a lineman that had a mean streak in them and not take on the personality of our passive coach. Mark is a great mentor, scout leader, church deacon, but not much of a championship coach.

A true moment of clarity brought to you by your beloved Buck Belue:

“Fairley would be a rock star in Georgia if he played for the ‘Dogs, But he plays for Auburn. So we hate him. I get it.”

The Bulldogs played with them for 3 quarters, but couldn’t hold up late. Guess those Auburn players were sick and tired of losing to Georgia. Plus, they championships on the line. Georgia is just playing for pride.

Football is a tough, physical, emotional game. Mean dudes play it…like Nick Fairley.

This guy has a take no prisoners approach. He’s bringing it. Do I think that was a cheap shot he took against Murray, when he hit his knee down low? No, I don’t. Look at the the replay again. Fairley is already low to the ground, getting pushed by the ‘Dogs OL…and then, he finishes with the blow to the leg. Could he have bailed out? Don’t think so. His momentum was moving forward. Was this a deliberate attempt to hurt Murray. Don’t think so.

But I just loved the way the Georgia OL went after him on the next play. Protect your QB. It’s an oath every OL should take. Love it! And you can bet Aaron Murray appreciated it.

I played with a guy that lived on the edge too. Eddie “Meat Cleaver” Weaver. He was mean and intimidating, just like Fairley. QB’s knew Weaver was going to bring it. Same way with Fairley. I”l end it with this: If you don’t want to get hit, go play tennis.

I cant wait for The Tide to roll Auburns feelings. Yuck, Im a dawg fan and im rooting for Alabama. And all Auburn recruits should decommit from auburn and commit to UGA. UGA will at least be bowl eligable next year and be able to recruit more than 15 recruits. GOO DAWGS!!!.

Houston has 10 sacks–#1 in SEC
Houston has 17.5 tfl’s–#2 in SEC by 1/2

The guy deserves defensive player of the year.

But Fairley, cheap shot artist, will get it, Auburn’s the media darling this year

Georgia, once again, gets the shaft.

But the NFL will notice, so will recruits, and Houston will earn a massive contract.

They better give it to Fairley or he’ll rake his helmet across their chin, spear them in the back, and try to break their leg with his helmet…hell, he’ll probably just murder some random stranger if he doesn’t win…the guy is a thug…I bet his family members are either in prison or dead.

Hey Under Educated Gerogia Fan,
Nobody knew Auburn had an engineering school untill you said so. Why? Because nobody gives a sh*t about Auburn. You are the step-child of your state, and that must really suck. Have fun looking back on this season being 0-13. Now, go stand in a corner and sing “lean on me”, tool.

To the allbarn people keep saying the Dawgs are the only ones talking about Fairley. The TV announcers said at the START of the game. OTHER, coaches had warned Ga of the body slams Fairley was doing to QB’s of other teams. The Allbarn head Coach KNEW THIS FROM WATCHING FILM. He is full of crap acting like he didn’t know anything about it. I have NO respect for him what so ever! That QB could have had a very bad spinal injury. Just a kid playing a game for crying out loud.

Nick Fairley’s issues with late and dirty hits throughout the season will cost him votes and prevent him from winning the Nagurski award. The problems at the end of the UGA game insured that voters wouldn’t overlook what has been an ongoing issue for Fairley. He will still get votes, but not enough to win.

The Auburn/Ga Tech fans on this blog repeatedly claim that UGA fans are making excuses for the loss to Auburn. Where do they come up with this stuff? Virtually all UGA fans knew before the game even started that Auburn was the more talented team this year. Georgia gave them a competitive game and even looked like they might pull out a win for a little while, but in the end Cam Newton provided more offensive firepower than the UGA defense could handle. Murray kept playing well even after several of Newton’s dirty hits and by the time Newton succeeded in knocking Murray out of the game, the game was nearly over and UGA had no real chance to win. Nearly all UGA fans would agree that the Fairley hits aren’t the reason UGA lost the game. UGA lost the game because their defense couldn’t stop the best offensive player in college football when they need to. The same can be said about everyone Auburn has played so far this year. Pointing out that Cam Newton was better than our defense, or that Nick Fairley made several dirty hits on our QB isn’t making excuses. It’s simply discussing facts and issues resulting from the game.

Most UGA fans aren’t discussing the pushing and shoving that our linemen did at the end of the game, or the players who came on the field when the fights started to break out. They’re not discussing those things because they are not really issues. GA fans know that our linemen shouldn’t pile on a player and try to injure him as a result of the cheap shots he delivered to our QB. They also know that our players shouldn’t leave the sideline when a fight breaks out. We can certainly understand why some of our players would be angry after watching Fairley’s cheap shots on the QB all day, and reach the boiling point when Fairley finally knocked Murray out of the game. Everyone watching the game knew what was coming next: the UGA linemen were going to send a message to Mr. Fairley that the late hits were unacceptable. If Coach Chickenshizwhatever was smart he would have removed the source of the problems – Fairley – from the game for the last few plays of an already decided game. Instead, Coach Chickenshizwhatever decided to leave Fairley in the game, knowing he was playing with a target on his back, then dance with glee on the sideline as the anticipated fights broke out. Though we understand the anger and frustration that led the UGA players to go after Fairley, we also understand that those actions are against the rules and our players may face consequences for their actions. The fact that UGA players responded with anger to the cheap shots delivered by Fairley doesn’t excuse his attempts to injure quarterbacks, using late and dirty hits, all season long.

UGA fans aren’t the ones on here making excuses, claiming their player was unfairley singled out, debating the number of times the hits were excessively dirty vs. the number of times the hits were just plain dirty, or pretending that none of it ever happened. You would think that after a win, Auburn would be focused on the big game coming up against Alabama. Instead, there are more of them on here throwing out baseless accusations and illogical arguements than there ever were.

Finally, where was this “beatdown” that so many of you are mentioning? I didn’t see it happen on the field during the Auburn – UGA game. On the contrary, the game was a hard faught, close contest most of the way through. Auburn made enough plays at the end to earn the win, but the game was nothing close to a “beatdown”. The fact that Auburn had so much difficulty holding off a 5 – 5 opponent form the bottom half of the conference, says more about Auburn’s shortcomings than anything.

Not that there are many Auburn fans who can read and comprehend so much logical discussion all in one post, but those are my thoughts on the issues. You can agree with me, or you can be wrong. It’s your choice.

As far as Houston is concerned…..Hit the bricks pal….You have not shown up and been a impact in our must win games. You are not a impact player. Close the door on the way out!!

Ralph –

UGA fans and players are, as you so eloquently state, poor sports? Maybe it’s just me, but I fairly well remember a game not too long ago in Auburn, won by UGA on a late game grab by Michael Johnson, in which UGA players were pelted with debris from the fans in the endzone as they were celebrating the reception.

Yes, Ralph, you are correct. UGA fans and players are poor sports, and you at Auburn exemplify the pinnacle of sportsmanship. Well done, sir.

I think Peterson has got to be considered the frontrunner?

Fairley has been tagged by ESPN as a dirty player. Even if he were a frontrunner, that alone would make it too embarrassing to hand it to him.
