Richt: Murray is expected to play vs. Tech despite knee, chest injuries

Georgia’s open date comes at a good time for quarterback Aaron Murray.

Murray might miss some practice time this week because of knee and chest injuries but is expected to play in the Bulldogs’ next game Nov. 27 against Georgia Tech, coach Mark Richt told the Touchdown Club of Atlanta on Monday.

“He’s beat up pretty good, actually,” Richt said in a speaking engagement that was streamed on the Internet.

Richt said “luckily there is no structural damage” to Murray’s left knee, which took a shot from Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley’s helmet late in Saturday’s game.

“It was more just a blow to the knee, to the bone, and it’s bruised up pretty good,” Richt said. “I think he’s going to be fine.”

Richt said Murray also suffered “a pretty deep bruise in his chest” against Auburn.

Officially, Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson lists Murray as “day-to-day” with knee and sternum bruises.

Georgia will hold its first practice of the week Tuesday, and Richt was uncertain whether Murray will participate.

“We’ll see how he handles it, if he’s able to throw the ball,” Richt said. “We think by game time he’ll be able to play, but right now practice is day-to-day.”

UPDATE: Asked about Murray’s status on his radio call-in show Monday night, Richt put it this way: “There is no guarantee he will play in the game, but we’re thinking there’s a good chance he will.” Richt said the bruised sternum “is probably bothering [Murray] the most right now.”

Both Saturday night and Sunday, Richt declined to comment about Fairley’s hits on Murray in Auburn’s 49-31 victory. But the coach did make a fleeting reference to the issue in his remarks to the Touchdown Club.

“I thought offensively we blocked No. 90 [Fairley] pretty good most of the game,” Richt said. “There were some times he did get free. Sometimes he got free a little bit late, but he did get free.”

Murray, a redshirt freshman, has 2,580 yards passing this season — the third most all-time for an SEC freshman. He has thrown 21 touchdown passes and six interceptions — “a tremendous ratio for any quarterback, even if you’re a veteran,” Richt said.

++++++++++

Georgia’s A.J. Green was named Monday as one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, which goes to college football’s top receiver each year. The field will be reduced to three finalists on Nov. 22 and the winner named on Dec. 9.

Green has 41 catches for 674 yards and nine touchdowns this season despite missing the first four games while on NCAA suspension for selling his Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000. He had nine catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns against Auburn.

Radio announcement says channel 2 is airing a report tonight on 6 o clock news (believe an interview) regarding Cecil Newton, Cam’s father. Should be interesting to hear. For his sake I hope he is clean. However, after the game and what I saw of dirty playing by Fairley it will be hard for me to root for AU the reminder season even though it is best interest of SEC football. Normally I would in hopes of gaining a NC for the SEC but this makes it really really difficult and has tarnished a great southern rivalry between the Dawgs and the War Eagles. To have AU fans boing when you have a hurt player on the field insuating he is not is in such poor taste.

Hey, Dawg fans…they’ve only beat us one time in the last 5 years – that is, unless the NCAA takes all of their wins away from them because of Cam-scam.

To UGA fans I apologize:
I apologize for hitting your player late and getting flagged for it. That was wrong. I hope the players is punished.
I apologize for having players who hustle.
I apologize for having players who hustle on the field instead of getting arrested off the field.
I apologize for having my players tackle people on the field instead of hitting them with cars and leaving off the field.
I apologize for having coaches keep players from leaving the bench and going on the field.
I apologize for players not talking trash before the game.
I apologize for not targeting your best player and trying to ruin his career by breaking both knees during multiple chop blocks
I apologize for my players not getting two of their teammates and jumping on one player and kneeing and punching him on the ground.

49-31…Not saying we didn’t get our butts beat. Auburn was the better team and won. What I am saying (not whining) is that Fairley is a punk. He does not play to the whistle he CLEARLY plays well AFTER the whistle and that shot to the back was not just a late hit. That was intent to injure by taking 2 top 3 steps after the ball was released and spearing Murray in the back. BTW..Our OL did block him until the whistle are they supposed to block him all the way back to the defensive huddle. There were many late hits that were not called. In my day Fairley would be on crutches about right now mulling a career at McDonalds,. .

You Auburn apologists slay me. Fairley was most emphatically NOT blocked into Murray at the end. I have watched it 20 times. He dove for it on purpose. Fairley also was not chop blocked all game. You Auburn Dunderheads saw ONE chop block called and that wasnt even on Farley. You cannot point to a single other incident of a chop block.

Farley is not a dirty player he borders on Criminal. Leave it to Auburn fans to make it all okay. As someone else said, this is no longer a friendly rivalry. I will never forget Fairley trying to end Murray’s career repeatedly and Chizik cheering it. And Chizik WAS cheering it no matter what War EaglePlainsmenTiger split personality, fight song copying hicks say. Enjoy your probation no program deserves it more.

OkefenokeeDawg-Its simple you guys have an excuse for everything that is all I am saying. I dont need to justify myself to you to know that it happened just go back and look at last years game when he got hurt and Jaybo Shaw came in and threw an int on the next play and see for yourself

RiffRaff-What has Wisconsin ever won in the last 10 years? Suddenly they beat Indiana and they are great? They beat Ohio St and they are great. Ohio St is the same school all SEC people say are overrated every year and now you want to use them for an example to make a point?

This is real simple, you guys have a better team than us and should beat us next week but for the love of God quit whining about everthing!

All you pansies crying about Fairley and his hits on Murray, go play soccer or lacrosse. Football is a violent sport. Yeah, the hit in the back was uncalled for and he was penalized for it but the hit on the knee was not intentional. Everybody wants to see the big hit until it’s a big hit on their guy. Let’s put a pink jersey on the quarterbacks and start playing two hand touch. It’s where our country is headed so we might as well ruin football while we’re at it.

I don’t hear much whining about losing the game–UGA got beat period. Auburn’s offense is creative–Cam makes it work. Fun to watch them execute if you are not the oppontent. Cheap shots (whether in retaliation or not) are the issue. Talk about tinted glasses. Fairley has been documented time and again in this area. The league will take action–if not it is to keep Auburn as our only title game hope. We will see.

I’ve watched these games all my life (and thats a long time) but that display of intentionally trying to injure a player was the lowest point in the history of Auburn/Ga. football. As I said, ugas would have a rationalization for one of their own for trying to end a young man’s career. I don’t know if Fairley was encouraged, I guess the Auburn coaches would he to blame for that. Because he did it doesn’t mean he was encouraged. Maybe your logic is that he was not discouraged…but we will never know that either.

I just look at the facts. What we do know is that Ben Jones charged the MSU lineman after the whistle and took out his knees…blatently dirty..to MSUs credit their players were discplined enough to stay on the sidelines.
