Richt: Murray is expected to play vs. Tech despite knee, chest injuries

Georgia’s open date comes at a good time for quarterback Aaron Murray.

Murray might miss some practice time this week because of knee and chest injuries but is expected to play in the Bulldogs’ next game Nov. 27 against Georgia Tech, coach Mark Richt told the Touchdown Club of Atlanta on Monday.

“He’s beat up pretty good, actually,” Richt said in a speaking engagement that was streamed on the Internet.

Richt said “luckily there is no structural damage” to Murray’s left knee, which took a shot from Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley’s helmet late in Saturday’s game.

“It was more just a blow to the knee, to the bone, and it’s bruised up pretty good,” Richt said. “I think he’s going to be fine.”

Richt said Murray also suffered “a pretty deep bruise in his chest” against Auburn.

Officially, Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson lists Murray as “day-to-day” with knee and sternum bruises.

Georgia will hold its first practice of the week Tuesday, and Richt was uncertain whether Murray will participate.

“We’ll see how he handles it, if he’s able to throw the ball,” Richt said. “We think by game time he’ll be able to play, but right now practice is day-to-day.”

UPDATE: Asked about Murray’s status on his radio call-in show Monday night, Richt put it this way: “There is no guarantee he will play in the game, but we’re thinking there’s a good chance he will.” Richt said the bruised sternum “is probably bothering [Murray] the most right now.”

Both Saturday night and Sunday, Richt declined to comment about Fairley’s hits on Murray in Auburn’s 49-31 victory. But the coach did make a fleeting reference to the issue in his remarks to the Touchdown Club.

“I thought offensively we blocked No. 90 [Fairley] pretty good most of the game,” Richt said. “There were some times he did get free. Sometimes he got free a little bit late, but he did get free.”

Murray, a redshirt freshman, has 2,580 yards passing this season — the third most all-time for an SEC freshman. He has thrown 21 touchdown passes and six interceptions — “a tremendous ratio for any quarterback, even if you’re a veteran,” Richt said.

++++++++++

Georgia’s A.J. Green was named Monday as one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, which goes to college football’s top receiver each year. The field will be reduced to three finalists on Nov. 22 and the winner named on Dec. 9.

Green has 41 catches for 674 yards and nine touchdowns this season despite missing the first four games while on NCAA suspension for selling his Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000. He had nine catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns against Auburn.

Trasha dasha,

Did you see CAM slide for the first time this season in the game. reason is he was tackled like a man before the whistle and while he still had the ball. CAM newton had his bell rung on multiple occasions by Dent and Dowtin and on that series in particular.

Take a look there tiger.

I have to admit, the people posting here for AU appear to lend credibility to the idea that anything, and I mean anything is OK in football! Gouge eyes, use signature career ending techniques, and I guess paying a kid a fortune to play would be easy for them to justify, too. “Just win, baby!!”

Thank you for your insight Doublewide99. Perhaps your pee size brain just can’t understand it. It’s not about who’s got the better team. It’s Auburn without a doubt. We’re talking about about your Punk Fairley and his dirty play.

TrishaDishaWarEagle – Ask USC how that “Just win, Baby,” philosophy is working for them. The NCAA doesn’t look on repeat offenders too kindly. They gave you guys all the rope you wanted Saturday.

If UGA fans only believed in rules, life might be fair. But they only want the rules to apply to the other teams, not UGA or it’s players.

You seem to be obsessed with Erk Russell. Erk was the last 3-letter athlete at AU. But more importantly, he also left there and coached H.S. football in Atlanta; becauase a proud ‘Dawg (where he became a coaching legend) and later, an Eagle where he built a national powerhouse literally from the ground up. Coach Russell was a Georgia man all the way. And yes, I agree with you: he’d have done something about the sh!t going down on the field.
We UGA people don’t like this B.S. any more than anyone else would. Rest assured, we WILL be back one way or the other.
Finally, CONGRATS on the first win in 5 years…

I have never seen the AU bloggers on here show such a lack of class they are showing today.I dont want to see any college player get injured for the game and possibley their career.I dont condone the UGA players acting this way either. To all the AU fans in defense of your players acts on Sat-YOUR DAY IS COMING SOONER THAN LATER WHEN THE NCAA/FBI LOWER THE BOMB ON THE PLAINS. I certainly hope yall come back on these blogs and take your medicine, but some how believe it wont happen. All I would say to Fairley-You cant changed what already occured on Sat,but you can change what happens in the future. You have a bright future in the NFL,dont become labled as a player to be watched for idiot actions.Play the game as it should and of course be physical but know the limitations.Play hard but play with integrity.

I have spoken with a couple of my Auburn friends and they are pretty disgusted with Fairly’s play on Saturday. They even said that they hope he leaves next year. I’m sure most good Auburn people agree. Still, Cam played a great game and Auburn won. Talking about the dirty playing by one does not change anything.
Let’s get ready for the 27th and kick the snot out of GT and win the whatever bowl. This Dawg still back his team and coaches. Go Dawgs!

Do UGA fans forget the twisting up of Nesbitt’s leg in last years game? Now someone hits your QB and its a cheap play? If I recall using Cam’s head as a brace everytime a UGA player got up after tackling him is not very sportsmanlike either.

Why the frak are Auburn fans on this UGA blog? Is Auburn mentioned in the headline??? No, this is a UGA blog, go find your own blog…does the village posing as a city (Auburn) even have a paper?

Find it so funny to see Auburn “fans” here defending the dirty play that took place on Saturday. Move on, you won the game, go elsewhere. You may call a cat a fish…but it will not swim. Dirty is Dirty. Also comparing the THUG Fairley to Huh is an insult to Huh. Fairley can’t hold Huh’s jockstrap let alone be compared as a future great NFL DT prospect.

I am glad Aaron Murray is okay and will be able to play against us. He is already special for Dawg fans, but as I stated earlier in the year he looks extra special and I know he will be great (already great) by the time he leaves UGA. To me he has the potential to be your best quarterback ever and my favorite all time Georgia quarterback is Fran Tarkenton, probably more so for what he did in the pros being the first scrambler. Fran doesn’t always get the credit he deserves, but he paved the way for the passing/running quarterbacks we see today.

I grew up in GA and went to AU for this very reason…obnoxious GA fans…you were going to be ugly whether you won or lost! Fairley has been sacking QB’s all season, I didn’t hear any of them complain…this is football..the late hit in the back was horrible and I am sure he was reprimanded, but he is one heck of a lineman and there is no question about that…you GA fans wish you had someone like him on your team…if you did, you wouldn’t be whining!

@Murphy, since I lliked the friendly back and forth with you on barnharts blog, I never said he shouldn’t have been penalized for the late hit in the back…the others were not flagged so they were not penalties!!! It’s simple as that. And for a team with 4 personal fouls in one game(UGA) to whine about dirty playing from the other team, comes off whiney..

Murray needs to sit out this game. Our offensive line is crap, hopefully when Bobo is gone next year the new coordinator, (please not Richt) will offer some protection and play calling that will work. Plus we will then have a reason to lose to Tech, our season is over anyway and if we beat Tech it will not prove anything. Please go to Colorado Richt!!!!!!

Fairley is now 3-for-3 on taking out quarterbacks. -

The 6-5, 298-pound junior knocked LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee out of the game temporarily in the first half with a sprained right wrist.

Lee was able to come back into the game in the second half, but wasn’t the same throwing the football.

It was his hit on Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett that knocked Mallett out of the game a month ago with a concussion.

The Mallett shot was pretty bad but the one on Murray with the game over even worse.

Nor do I want to see them injured, just hurt. Thats why I don’t even question the 15 yrd personal foul that ended up keeping your drive alive and led to 7 points..that was on Fairley…he deserved it and should run some stairs for giving you guys the chance at those 7 points. Driving the QB into the ground, on the other hand, IS LEGAL. If you hate it so much, petition the NCAA to ban it..As long as a play is legal, it is ok to do it.

If anyone can put a defensive scheme in place to defeat Cam Newton its Nick Saban, Farley and Cam will get theirs to bad its gonna be a forfeit of the season and sec west crown plus heavy sanctions on Auburn. Cams dad did request money and his church had major repairs that the church couldnt afford. The NCAA will follow the money and in thened AU fans will suffer. :(
