Bulldogs sign son of former major-league star (updated with more signings)

Dante Bichette hit 274 home runs in 14 major-league seasons, making the All-Star team four times. His son, Dante Bichette Jr., will play baseball at Georgia.

A senior at Orangewood Christian School in Orlando, Bichette Jr., an infielder, has signed a national letter of intent with the Bulldogs.

“Dante is one of the headliners of our signing class because he does a lot of things well,” UGA coach David Perno said in a news release. “He has the most power in our class; it’s in his genes. He’s a corner infielder and will be a great fit here. We had a real connection with him and his family.”

Bichette was among six additions to Georgia’s recruiting class announced Monday. The others, all from in-state: outfielder Justin Bryan (Lavonia), outfielder Zach Freeman (Lake Park), outfielder/pitcher Heath Holder (Loganville), pitcher Reggie McClain (Johns Creek) and infielder Tyler Palmer (Odum.)

Update, 2:30 p.m. Tuesday:

On Tuesday, Georgia announced six more signings, including four from in-state: pitcher Jarrett Brown (Conyers), pitcher Luke Crumley (Cleveland), pitcher David Sosebee (Cleveland) and outfielder D.J. Smith (Woodstock). Crumley and Sosebee are teammates at White County High School.

In addition, Georgia signed outfielder Hunter Cole (Moore, S.C.) and catcher/infielder Nicky Delmonico (Knoxville).  Delmonico is the son of long-time former Tennessee baseball coach Rod Delmonico and the brother of Joey Delmonico, a junior catcher on the current UGA team.

I watched Zach Freeman from Lowndes High a few times and he can really stroke the ball with a lot of power. Should be a nice addition to UGA………….

“dumb as a rock” – you just showed everyone how ignorant and stupid you are. If you are a UGA fan, we don’t need you. Go to the North Avenue area and try to stay alive or hold onto your money.

UGA has played for the National Championship once in the last 20 years. And you couldn’t even beat a sorry Fresno State to win it.

[...] Dante Bichette Jr., the son of the famous former major league ball player of the same name, has signed a baseball scholarship with Georgia. Bichette, whose father his 274 big-league home runs, was one of six prospects to ink with coach [...]

Trooper Taylor is a name I keep hearing around SEC circles involving Auburn. The story has not cooled folks it’s actually picking up steam. Cam will be ruled ineligible by Alabama and the UGA will be a forfeit game. I guarantee it.

Just like Scott Rolen, Jayson Werth and Brandon Phillips before, Bichette will likely never make it to Athens.

I don’t see why college basketball does not adopt the college baseball strategy of sign-and-stay or go directly to the draft. Guess it makes too much sense?

When you finish 7th or 6th in the CWS that isn’t playing for a National Championship.

Just FWIW, UGA was the first SEC school to win a College World Series, so while the Dawgs have certainly not won as many titles as the Tigers, college baseball is nothing new in Athens.

That is what a baseball program looks like.

Murray is day to day. May not play versus Tech. Will this year never end? He sits, we are screwed. Tech 28-17 if we can score that much. they will blitz Mason every play.

We can score 42 with Murray and hopefully get enough stops to win. Without Murray, we are hosed.

Dear Bob – the national championship is a best of 3 between the winner of the winner’s bracket, and the winner of the loser’s bracket.

So when you get to Omaha, you are playing to reach the finals, you are not playing for a national championship.

This is good Perno signing all this big talent so early. I just hate how much he promises these kids though. He should be honest and up front with them. A few years back he told one of my players, who was being offered by a lot of schools, that he would step right and contribute. He ended up signing 6 more players who played that same position and the following year took away his scholarship. There is no other part to that story either. Just a dirty coach lying to kids and making false promises. The kid ended up transferring to another school and playing for a national championship and starting for three years so it worked out. I will never send another kid his way though. He has burnt that bridge. Just look at how many kids he signs year to year and how many of them graduate from UGA. It’s a shame.

Last 2 times Georgia has met GT in post season baseball:

2004: Dawgs sweep Jackets 2-0 in Super Regionals at Russ Chandler
2008: Dawgs beat Jackets twice in a row to win the Athens Regional. The championship game was 18-6!

CollegeBB

And I agree that Perno over recruits. And not to make excuses but part of the blame falls on the NCAA for the lack of scholarships for baseball. Perno has stated that he has been a part of programs in the past (Marshall and Georgia) that gave a limited amount of offers and then 75% of those signed pro contracts leaving the program uncompetitive. You have to find a balance better than Perno does but the NCAA handicaps baseball more than any other collegiate sport.
