Colorado, which beat Georgia earlier this season and later fired its coach, is interested in talking with Georgia’s Mark Richt about the position, the Denver Post reported today, citing an unnamed source “close to Colorado’s search.”
Richt, in his 10th season as Georgia’s coach, has said repeatedly over the years that he wants to complete his coaching career at UGA.
The Denver Post report also says former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti has had preliminary talks with Colorado about the job and that a search committee is expected to be named next week.
Richt makes about $2.8 million as Georgia’s coach, and Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn has said the school likely won’t pay more than $2 million for its new coach, according to the Post.
Georgia lost 29-27 at Colorado on Oct. 2. The Buffaloes haven’t won since then, losing five consecutive games. The school fired coach Dan Hawkins this week.
Richt lived in Broomfield, Colo., for part of his childhood before his family moved to South Florida.

Trust me, I live here in the foot hills of the Rocky Mountains, CU is a very poor run University and always want something for nothing. It is one of the top three drug infested schools in our nation and mostly leberals that cant see the forest for the trees. Now CSU is a great place as far as schools are concerned. The difference in the two are like black and white or good and evil. I am just a old Ga. boy looking at it like it is.

I think after today’s hat gets handed to me and the buzzards are getting lower and lower, I better look into the Colorado thing. Wait a minute, I couldn’t even beat Colorado, are you sure you have the story right? Somebody get Turbeville on the line. I need some advice.
See, after he stunk the place up and drug the program through the pig slop, it took Auburn no time to right the ship. I take my latest 2.8 mil, get out of Dodge, and get myself some distance from this place. Hey, I really don’t have a clue about anything, but everyone(apparently except Colorado) already knows that for sure.

I would like to point out that when Dooley was head coach at Georgia players were not allowed to jump to the NFL after their junior or redshirt sophomore year. That is why Herschel Walker went to the USFL after his junior year. When you are constantly losing your star players (especially QB) it is difficult to keep the program on an even keel. Of course all coaches have to deal with this now but this hit Georgia especially hard the last few years as they don’t have superstars waiting in line behind superstars like Bama and Florida usually do. Even Florida and Bama are showing down years because of this attrition. On the Cam issue it- it looks like the price of star players is “Escalading”.

I like and respect CMR, but if losses to Auburn and GT finish out the season, I can see some boosters in a panic, and you never know what might happen. If there’s a phone call from Coral Gables, I would be willing to bet the Athens end of that call would begin “I’m listening…”

In the business world, one is responsible for his recent successes. A sales person is responsible for his or her bottom line numbers year to year. I know ………..I retired after 33 year sales/marketing career and ran major manufacturing firm’s sales force. This is just the way that it is. Show me the numbers.
Mark Richt has not done anything in 4 or 5 years folks. He is not even recruiting well, anymore as a direct result of his record. HC of the U of Georgia should not be just another Obama jobs program.
I say by bye to Mark Richt. Let us get a fellow in here that can ( see Chizk, see Sabin, see Meyer, see Les Miles ) turn a program around if he only stays for 5 or 6 years. It is about winning.
Why is this so difficult to fathom???

This just infuriates me that people feel that a coach losing for a couple of years makes him such a bad guy. This is one of the greatest guys I know and all of a sudden after a few years of being down people think that is time to get rid of him. What they need to do is look at all the things that have happened ESPECIALLY this year with coordinators and shut up and give the man a chance.I was a student at FSU when he was there and hated to see him leave but at the same time my heart belonged to UGA and always has and was more than thrilled for him to come here. IF he leaves, I may have to turn in my black and red to goodwill…just sayin.

One big disclaimer…If by some chance Aaron Murray gets injured today in the Auburn game and can’t go against G-Tech, I think Tech wins that game and the Dogs finish 5-7.

UGA wallows bottom to middle tier in the conference with some of the best talent in the country year in and year out. Colorado entertained the thought of bringing in Tuberville last year, but it was determined his Christian beliefs that intertwine with his coaching style would not be a good fit for their University and their fan base. If Colorado balked at Tuberville, I don’t see them considering Richt.

Here’s a question to think about. How many years in a row with this year’s record will it take for Richt supporters to say we need a new HC?? His supporters continually use his record for the first three or so years as a reason he should stay. Even though his record for the past 4-5 years has not been too great. So…….if he had been hired and ONLY had his record of the past 4 years (pretend the first three seasons didn’t exist)……would you still be clammering for him to????

Yep, all the Richt haters will begin to quieten down when they realize that Richt is on the short-list for many schools. The most likely picture (if Richt wanted to leave) is Miami. If they knew that Richt would come their coach would be toast. Miami wants Richt. Penn State wants Richt. Clemson wants Richt. Colorodo wants Richt. It is even rumored that if Spurrier retires that South Carolina wants Richt. Who would not want the #4 winningnest active coach in the NCAA– a gracious man. I get sick at my stomach reading the poison spewed by the short-sighted Richt haters. I hope that Adams and the AD will play the man, step up to the plate and do whatever it takes to keep Richt here long-term. I am sick and tired of the idiots who don’t know a football from a hole in the ground who have stirred up so much trouble around Athens concerning our coach.

Mediocre is as mediocre does. The history of Georgia football! I sure do hope Richt takes it and goes! He would be perfect for Colorado! I am tired of the arrests. I am tired of losing to Florida. I am tired of wasting my money buying season tickets. Plain and simple, Richt had the opportunity to do something special at Georgia, but he hasn’t…
Bottom line is if you were a great high school talent, would you come to Georgia? Or choose Florida? Or choose Bama? Or choose Auburn? Georgia will be the second choice because Richt does not make players better players or better men. Richt has lost his lucky charm.

When you finish in the top 10 6 times over 9 seasons, win 75% of your games (top 5 in nation), have a top 10 recruiting track record, send more guys to the NFL that anybody else, finish in the top 10 for profits, yes, colleges will want your coach, especially when the local media bash him all the time, creating the perception Richt’s on some kind of mythical ‘hotseat”. Richt ain’t goin nowhere but Athens Ga, Colorado, don’t put much stock in the Georgia media, no one else does.

Time to hit the road Richt. It was fun while it lasted but we’re in the bottom half of the SEC now and today’s game will be ugly. We lost a close one to a terrible Florida team. We’re about to see what a good team looks like. We haven’t seen one all year and we’ve already lost five games. Fire Bobo? Who will want to take over as OC on a sinking ship? We’ll get our 5th choice just like we did last year. Dawg fans can keep the blinders on if you want to but the reality is Richt can’t turn the ship around and keeping him around is like giving Goff another year after the miserable ‘93 and ‘94 seasons. Have I mentioned it’s time for Richt to go?

Richt’s finished rankings:

2002- #3
2003- #6
2004- #7
2005- #10
2006- #23
2007- #2
2008- #10
The local Georgia media “forgets” to report on this.
But the folks at Georgia over Richt don’t.
And that’s ALL that matters.

Richt has us on track for a NC in two years? We said the same thing in 2002, 2004 and 2008. We’ve seen boatloads of talent play between the hedges and move on the NFL. We’re about to waste the talents of the best WR in the history of the SEC. I don’t know what people’s fascination with this coach is. The old grey mare just ain’t what she used to be. Donnan’s teams seldom looked this bad and people couldn’t wait to get rid of him. We’ve come to the point of NEEDING to beat Tech and their high school offense to be bowl eligible. How pathetic is that. Our new goal is barely being bowl eligible? Do they put up with that at programs with a fan base that has a clue? Richt is using the Bowden blueprint which doesn’t even work now in the pathetic ACC. Do you think the same strategy will work in a real conference. Mississippi State, Arkansas and Carolina have now passed us by in addition to Florida, LSU, Alabama and Auburn. At best we’re 8th in a 12 team conference. Keeping Richt as head coach is like making an arsonist Fire Chief. Time to get out of the burning building y’all.

Time for the silent majority to get vocal and yell from the mountain top that Richt is the guy to lead GA. If Richt is fired our program will be set back 10 years. I don’t think the AD is a fool. I believe he will secure Richt for the long term. We will finish in top ten the next several years unless there is a knee jerk reaction to a couple of down years. I believe Richt should stay even if we lose the next two games. Go to AD’s email and send letter of support. I have already done that and he responded.

Neil Callaway, Willie Martinez, and Damon Evans almost brought Richt down. Mike Bobo still might.
- Neil Callaway refused to recruit OL, even though he was a great OL coach. When he left for UAB we had no OL on the roster to block for Moreno, Stafford, and Massaquoi. I blame Richt for that also. He lived like he still coached at FSU and only needed a few OL playing a pretty weak, non-physical schedule. He learned the SEC was different.
- Willie – no explanation needed
- Damon Evans – Wanted Richt to do miracles. While Auburn, LSU, ‘Bama, and UF were playing 3 weak sister games a year, Evans wanted to make UGA a national brand by playing 1 weak opponent per year. This put the Dawgs at a serious disadvantage that not even a great coach like Richt could overcome.
- Bobo – I’m not sure he’s gonna make it. Cons and Pros both ways. More cons than pros to me, but I’ll let Richt make that call.

And Richt has a Freshman QB, and his top player was suspended for 4 games (thanks McGarity). Richt also lost 3 DL to the NFL. In spite of that, to go 7-6, is Saban like. And the losses have all been close. Could have been 10-3 with 3 plays (Col. King fumble, Fla Murray int in OT, SC Ealey fumble on goaline).

True, the local media, has it in for Richt, he wins so much, that the expectations are that Richt will have a top 10 team every year. Nobody does that. Media expectations for Richt are through the roof, and unrealistic. Nationally, no one had Georgia as a top 10 team in 2010, but the local media acts like 7-6, for the 1st time in a decade, is unacceptable.

I don’t think Richt would consider the Colorado job, but not for the reasons many of you are citing. Having lived in both Athens and Boulder, I can tell you that Boulder is a beautiful place. All this talk about drugs and hippies makes me laugh. The people saying that have either 1.) never been there or 2.) spent three days visiting and walked down the pearl street mall without really getting out and meeting real Colorado people. Colorado is a RED state (granted Boulder is ultra liberal as are most college towns). Richt played high school ball 20 minutes from the CU campus. He and Mrs. Richt both like Colorado quite a bit. Again, I think he would rather be at Georgia, but the seat is heating up and if he loses 5 games next year how much support will he have at UGA? Please understand, I loved living in Georgia and also my time in Athens, but I personally prefer Colorado.
The problems with the CU job are 1.) the school doesn’t have any money and they still owe Hawkins a few million. At UGA that would not be a problem. At CU, that is a big problem. 2.) There aren’t any high school football players in the state of Colorado. Roughly 15 division 1 prospects each year in state and only about half a dozen SEC caliber players produced by the state each year. That isn’t enough to compete (assuming you can keep 100% which CU has not been doing). There is no real in state competition with CSU and Air force, but even if you sign every one of the top 8 kids from Colorado , you don’t have much of a recruiting class. The neighboring states don’t offer much either. Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Western Kansas aren’t exactly recruiting hotbeads. Richt would have to spend a ton of time in TX and CA and I don’t think he would like that. he is a family guy.
3.) The university and the town of Boulder aren’t interested in having a good team. I’m not saying that it is intentionally sabatoged, but I’m saying they aren’t going to give the coach the rescources to compete. It isn’t a priority like it is in the SEC.
4.) There are additionally restrictions at CU that don’t exist at ANY other school. This is part of #3 above. One example: a recruit must back in the dorm by 11 PM during his recruiting visit. Yes, you read that right, he has to be tucked in by 11 PM. If not, his scholly offer is yanked. At UGA and tech and all Southern Schools, the high school kids party all night long. Calving Johnson remarked that he was out until 3 or 4 in the morning at both tech and Georgia during his visit when he was in high school and he had a ball. What do you think the parties are like at Texas and USC? When you visit CU, at 10:45 on Saturday night, you have to hustle back to the dorm for bed check. There might be a guy or two that actually signs with CU BECAUSE of this. David Pollack might have liked that, but most guys are going to laugh at it or might not even take the visit.
Boulder is a terrific place to live, but it isn’t a great place to be a college football coach.

2.) Recruiting class last year was only 16th or 17th depending on what pub that you read. He is not recruiting well. Why does UGA not have any big time running backs? Why do we have only a frosh QB that is prone to get too emotional and make over throws or underthrows??
3.) Why have UGA’s D teams for years been horrible? This year is a statistical improvment.

Most of those finishes were long after we were out of contention and the bowl games pairings dropped the top teams lower because they faced each other and Georgia with to the tissue bowl and beat some never heard of school. They only move up because the top teams played each other. In those seasons you refer to Georgia was out of contention, nationally, and conference wise long before the season was done. Thats what the press recognizes and why they dont bother to misrepresent the truth like you do.

When Richt went to FSU, FSU finished in the top 5, 12 times while Richt was there.
When Richt went to Georgia, he become 1 of 7 coaches in history to win 90 games in 9 seasons.
He’s one of the greatest Christian leaders alive, and could lead any organization, not just football.
If Richt leaves Georgia, and it’s looking like he will, due to lack of support from media and admin, he’ll likely go on to build some kind of National Christian organization like Ex-Colorado Coach McCarntey did. I could see Richt starting and build one of the largest family centered Christian ministries in the world. And the time, might be right now.

McGarity has done one of the worst jobs as a first year AD I’ve seen. It’s been Richt’s worst year record wise under McGarity’s “leadership”. McGarity wasn’t any help in the AJ case, and most surprising of all, McGarity has never come out verbally with clarity about Richt’s future at Georgia (an atrocious error of judgment). McGarity will go down as one of the worst AD’s in Georgia history. The fotoball program will decline under his direction, coaches will be fired every 2 year sunder his reign. He doesn’t get it. No leadership skills. None. McGarity has not brought out greatness out of Coach Richt. McGarity cannot lead. That’s not going to change.

McGarity didn’t understand his goal this year. McGarity was focused on future scheduling, lost in conceptual virtuality, years down the road, instead of focusing on reality right now, how to support Coach Richt in 2010. Really clueless about leadership. As bad as I’ve seen. And you ain’t seen nothign yet, McGarity will go down as the worst AD in Georgia history.

To all you old redneck geezers and teaparty sack grabbers…, you’re right, Richt is not recruiting as well as in the past! But the fault lays with all your bigoted nitpicking and not him. That’s why the top prospects in the state like Crowell are bypassing UGA, for schools in surrounding states, and that’s really saying something, when black kids would rather go to Alabama, South Carolina, or Mississippi than Georgia. The exodus has begun and Georgia will never be the same. As long as the same old hate mongering is allowed to fester, you’ll get what you deserve. You’ll probably say; good, they’re all liberals, thugs, and welfare users let them go elsewhere, anywhere other than our great state institution. Well, as you can see your wishes are being granted. You can’t have everything the way you would like to be; incredibly talented kids going to your school, in spite of all the negativity, hate, and outright racism UGA supporters Are espousing either with their mouths or silent acceptance. I for one am not suprised!!!!! Now Watch, all the attacks will be on my comments, instead of all the racist comments that are posted on UGA sites everyday. Typical , So Typical, Hate The Messenger and Disregard The Message!

Please go to Colorado, Richt. I am begging you. You haven’t had a good season since 2007. You didn’t start winning until your ass was on the line. You let Bobo have a say in offensive playcalling, and the playcalling itself lost us at LEAST two games (Arkansas and Florida). You’ve gotten too comfortable here and don’t have the killer instinct to take us to a National Title. You can crush the easy teams but you can’t beat Florida and you can’t beat the tougher teams on the schedule. You have to win all the time, not just when it “counts.” Please, Colorado is the perfect place for you. Go, go, go!!!

Looks like it’s time for the local Georgia media to have new punching bag, one that’s easy to punch, a Donnan like Coach who can’t get the team into the top 10. Welcome to mediocrity media, careful what you wish for.
The local media continues to dishonor Coach Richt, day after day, regardless of all the good things that Richt has done.
The media is also to blame for Richt leaving. As they have tried to create discontent, for no valid reason.

Lordy Mercy, it’s depressing to read AJC message boards, and I must be a glutton for intellectual punishment to ever take a look. I hope that at least half the ostensible UGA fans on here are Techies or Gators in disguise. Coach Richt will be back next year, come way may this year, and he deserves at least that extra year. I don’t know how religion and politics got mixed up in this, but I admire Mark Richt as a man and support him as a coach even though my own brand of Christianity is much less “fundamental” than his and I’m sure my politics would not = his. If we have another bad year next year, then I’ll join the jittery band-wagoners who think his time is up. But it won’t happen. The elements are clearly in place for a great 2011.

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same question this time a year from now.
Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.
As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”

Tired Of It,
I couldn’t agree with you more. Most of the drugs, violence (date rape), alcohol abuse and arrests at UGA are from students, not players. Still, the largely redneck fan-base would have you believe all black players are uneducated “thugs”. They called A.J. Green a “thug” because he tried to sell his jersey. A.J. has never been charged with an illegal crime in his life, yet these same bigots will drive home drunk from a football game endangering other people’s lives.

Attention, everyone, especially dawgtards. We will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan Kemp, who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by slimeball Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.
And now, the moment of silence…

To the Georgia fans who think you should win 11 or 12 games every year, be careful what you wish for.

Richt is 95-32, about a 75% winning percentage. He’s won two conference titles in 10 years. His last three years are 10-3, 8-5, and 5-5 at the moment.

Richt is 13-12 in the last 25 games. And we’re supposed to be happy about that?
Mark Bradley points-out the facts:
“Richt’s 10-year body of work stands as a mighty argument for administrative patience. More current events suggest the Richt of 2010 isn’t the Richt of yesteryear. It took four full seasons under this coach and defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder for Georgia to lose 10 games. The Bulldogs lost five times last year, changed defensive coordinators and have already lost five times this.”
Fact is, the SEC has taken their game to a higher level and left Richt and UGA behind.
I am prepared to suffer through one, two, even three shots at getting someone who can help us catch-up. It’s better than staying the Richt course. This is painful to watch.

Ever notice that when a coaching vacancy opens up that Houston Nutt’s agent releases a press statement claiming that Nutt told the school he isn’t interested in the job? The agent does that to make the coach look like he’s in higher demand than he actually is. Same thing happened with Sonny Perdue and the GOP VP slot that he was never under any actual consideration for. In this case, Colorado might have no intention of hiring Richt, they just want to use his name to set a baseline for the type of candidates they’re expecting. Richt benefits too since other schools looking interested in him makes people question if they’re being too hard on him for recent stumbles.
College football is a rough business and marquee programs in conferences like the SEC don’t have patience with coaches making several million a year. It’s hard to imagine Richt being forced out even if he loses to Tech but next year something great had better happen.
Of course he might at some point decide he wants a job with a bit less pressure. Programs like Colorado can’t offer as much money as UGA but really, when you’re talking about millions per year at either school, does it really matter?

As long as Bobo do the callings (most of the times), we won’t be any better, Murray, or Stafford, Morino or King, Moosie or Green, or whoever we have will be like no ones. The real trouble is we, the fans are ok with it.

Richt was the right man at UGA 10 years ago but he currently is likely the 8th or 9th best coach in the SEC. If he leaves I would give him congratulations on his job here for the early years but he is clearly not the man we need currently. Time for some new blood in Athens to invigorate this program.

Who is UGA going to get in place of MR? Who? We need a coach that can take control of the players! A coach that is dedicated to UGA. A coach that knows how to have a gameplan. A coach that can win close ball games. A coach that fires an assistant when needed. ONSIDE KICK MR. WHAT TRICKS DID YOU HAVE IN THE BAG FOR THE GA AUBURN. NONE. KICK A FIELD GOAL. NO GUTS NO GLORY. SOFT SOFT SOFT SOFT.
