Report: Colorado interested in Richt

Colorado, which beat Georgia earlier this season and later fired its coach, is interested in talking with Georgia’s Mark Richt about the position, the Denver Post reported today, citing an unnamed source “close to Colorado’s search.”

Richt, in his 10th season as Georgia’s coach, has said repeatedly over the years that he wants to complete his coaching career at UGA.

The Denver Post report also says former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti has had preliminary talks with Colorado about the job and that a search committee is expected to be named next week.

Richt makes about $2.8 million as Georgia’s coach, and Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn has said the school likely won’t pay more than $2 million for its new coach, according to the Post.

Georgia lost 29-27 at Colorado on Oct. 2.  The Buffaloes haven’t won since then, losing five consecutive games. The school fired coach Dan Hawkins this week.

Richt lived in Broomfield, Colo., for part of his childhood before his family moved to South Florida.

Richt will most likely NOT take GA to a bowl this year and so he will have plenty of time to read this mess we write on the blog and have the time to go for interviews. I suggest this: If he loses the last two games of the season and entertains speaking to CO or anyone else – fire him before he resigns.

Here’s a question to think about. How many years in a row with this year’s record will it take for Richt supporters to say we need a new HC?? His supporters continually use his record for the first three or so years as a reason he should stay. Even though his record for the past 4-5 years has not been too great. So…….if he had been hired and ONLY had his record of the past 4 years (pretend the first three seasons didn’t exist)……would you still be clammering for him to????

Richt is a DAWG and a darn good coach – DAWG fans had better “think” before talking and acting on replacing a coach like Richt – he is good for the DAWGS and has a bright future ! To think otherwise is just nuts ! Today must might be the day for the Tigers to fall on the Plains ?

Yep, all the Richt haters will begin to quieten down when they realize that Richt is on the short-list for many schools. The most likely picture (if Richt wanted to leave) is Miami. If they knew that Richt would come their coach would be toast. Miami wants Richt. Penn State wants Richt. Clemson wants Richt. Colorodo wants Richt. It is even rumored that if Spurrier retires that South Carolina wants Richt. Who would not want the #4 winningnest active coach in the NCAA– a gracious man. I get sick at my stomach reading the poison spewed by the short-sighted Richt haters. I hope that Adams and the AD will play the man, step up to the plate and do whatever it takes to keep Richt here long-term. I am sick and tired of the idiots who don’t know a football from a hole in the ground who have stirred up so much trouble around Athens concerning our coach.

Mediocre is as mediocre does. The history of Georgia football! I sure do hope Richt takes it and goes! He would be perfect for Colorado! I am tired of the arrests. I am tired of losing to Florida. I am tired of wasting my money buying season tickets. Plain and simple, Richt had the opportunity to do something special at Georgia, but he hasn’t…

Bottom line is if you were a great high school talent, would you come to Georgia? Or choose Florida? Or choose Bama? Or choose Auburn? Georgia will be the second choice because Richt does not make players better players or better men. Richt has lost his lucky charm.

When you finish in the top 10 6 times over 9 seasons, win 75% of your games (top 5 in nation), have a top 10 recruiting track record, send more guys to the NFL that anybody else, finish in the top 10 for profits, yes, colleges will want your coach, especially when the local media bash him all the time, creating the perception Richt’s on some kind of mythical ‘hotseat”. Richt ain’t goin nowhere but Athens Ga, Colorado, don’t put much stock in the Georgia media, no one else does.

Time to hit the road Richt. It was fun while it lasted but we’re in the bottom half of the SEC now and today’s game will be ugly. We lost a close one to a terrible Florida team. We’re about to see what a good team looks like. We haven’t seen one all year and we’ve already lost five games. Fire Bobo? Who will want to take over as OC on a sinking ship? We’ll get our 5th choice just like we did last year. Dawg fans can keep the blinders on if you want to but the reality is Richt can’t turn the ship around and keeping him around is like giving Goff another year after the miserable ‘93 and ‘94 seasons. Have I mentioned it’s time for Richt to go?

Dirk

Here’s why Richt ain’t goin nowhere but Athens, Georgia:

Richt’s finished rankings:
2001- #22
2002- #3
2003- #6
2004- #7
2005- #10
2006- #23
2007- #2
2008- #10

The local Georgia media “forgets” to report on this.

But the folks at Georgia over Richt don’t.

And that’s ALL that matters.

When you’re in the top 10 in winning % among all active coaches with 5 or more years experience, then about 115 other teams would yank Richt up if Georgia was ever dumb enough to get rid of him. And Georgia owuld have to pay him the rest of his salary through 2013. Not gonna happen, as Steven Tyler would scream “Dream on”.

Richt has us on track for a NC in two years? We said the same thing in 2002, 2004 and 2008. We’ve seen boatloads of talent play between the hedges and move on the NFL. We’re about to waste the talents of the best WR in the history of the SEC. I don’t know what people’s fascination with this coach is. The old grey mare just ain’t what she used to be. Donnan’s teams seldom looked this bad and people couldn’t wait to get rid of him. We’ve come to the point of NEEDING to beat Tech and their high school offense to be bowl eligible. How pathetic is that. Our new goal is barely being bowl eligible? Do they put up with that at programs with a fan base that has a clue? Richt is using the Bowden blueprint which doesn’t even work now in the pathetic ACC. Do you think the same strategy will work in a real conference. Mississippi State, Arkansas and Carolina have now passed us by in addition to Florida, LSU, Alabama and Auburn. At best we’re 8th in a 12 team conference. Keeping Richt as head coach is like making an arsonist Fire Chief. Time to get out of the burning building y’all.

I would suggest that you flood the AD’s office with letters of support for Richt ( a donation would not hurt either). AD and Adams needs to know that Richt has tons of support. Time for the silent majority to get vocal and yell from the mountain top that Richt is the guy to lead GA. If Richt is fired our program will be set back 10 years. I don’t think the AD is a fool. I believe he will secure Richt for the long term. We will finish in top ten the next several years unless there is a knee jerk reaction to a couple of down years. I believe Richt should stay even if we lose the next two games. Go to AD’s email and send letter of support. I have already done that and he responded.

November 13th, 2010

Please Please Please take him. Mark Richt is an average coach at best. Through the years it’s the talent at Georgia that have piled up the wins for him. Anytime he has gone up against teams with equal talent, he has been out coached an UGA embarassed. With the talent that comes thru the UGA program, we should be contending for a national title yearly.

Neil Callaway, Willie Martinez, and Damon Evans almost brought Richt down. Mike Bobo still might.

- Neil Callaway refused to recruit OL, even though he was a great OL coach. When he left for UAB we had no OL on the roster to block for Moreno, Stafford, and Massaquoi. I blame Richt for that also. He lived like he still coached at FSU and only needed a few OL playing a pretty weak, non-physical schedule. He learned the SEC was different.

- Willie – no explanation needed

- Damon Evans – Wanted Richt to do miracles. While Auburn, LSU, ‘Bama, and UF were playing 3 weak sister games a year, Evans wanted to make UGA a national brand by playing 1 weak opponent per year. This put the Dawgs at a serious disadvantage that not even a great coach like Richt could overcome.

- Bobo – I’m not sure he’s gonna make it. Cons and Pros both ways. More cons than pros to me, but I’ll let Richt make that call.

McGarity should have gotten AJ’s 4 game suspension reduced to 2 games like Bama got Darius’.

Not impressed with either of the 2 top brass at Georgia.

They should both come out supporting Richt, you can tell your friends, when you’re down.

They don’t know what they have in Richt.

I hope, Richt leaves them in the dust, and the program goes back to Donnan years of medicrity instead of top 10, top 5 win % calibre

From a Miami Message Board: On the possibility of Richt going to Miami…
“I would be very, very, surprised if this turns out to be true. Georgia is a high resource university and I do believe the alumni recognize Richt as one of the best around. I just don’t see it.”
Even Miami fans recognize that “Richt is one of the best around.” Why do the fair-weather short-sighted so called GA fans not recognize the most obvious truth in College Football. CMR is one of the best around. Come on Adams be a man and come out in support of your coach regardless of what happens today. Don’t be afraid. Stand up for our coach.

Saban went 7-6 in 07 in Saban’s first year putting in the 3-4, lost to every ranked team, beat a bunch of cream puffs, Richt’s on track to go 7-6 to in Richt’s 1st year with the 3-4. And Richt has a Freshman QB, and his top player was suspended for 4 games (thanks McGarity). Richt also lost 3 DL to the NFL. In spite of that, to go 7-6, is Saban like. And the losses have all been close. Could have been 10-3 with 3 plays (Col. King fumble, Fla Murray int in OT, SC Ealey fumble on goaline).

Richt needs to be at UGA. I like it out here in CO, but Richt needs to be kept on as our coach over in Athens.
Every program has periodic downturns, now with all of the scholy parity.
Look at Texas this year, and Penn State a few seasons ago. Some of their fringe fans were ready to run JO PA, out of town.
Richt is the right mn for that job. Period.
No matter what happens today.

True, the local media, has it in for Richt, he wins so much, that the expectations are that Richt will have a top 10 team every year. Nobody does that. Media expectations for Richt are through the roof, and unrealistic. Nationally, no one had Georgia as a top 10 team in 2010, but the local media acts like 7-6, for the 1st time in a decade, is unacceptable.

I don’t think Richt would consider the Colorado job, but not for the reasons many of you are citing. Having lived in both Athens and Boulder, I can tell you that Boulder is a beautiful place. All this talk about drugs and hippies makes me laugh. The people saying that have either 1.) never been there or 2.) spent three days visiting and walked down the pearl street mall without really getting out and meeting real Colorado people. Colorado is a RED state (granted Boulder is ultra liberal as are most college towns). Richt played high school ball 20 minutes from the CU campus. He and Mrs. Richt both like Colorado quite a bit. Again, I think he would rather be at Georgia, but the seat is heating up and if he loses 5 games next year how much support will he have at UGA? Please understand, I loved living in Georgia and also my time in Athens, but I personally prefer Colorado.

The problems with the CU job are 1.) the school doesn’t have any money and they still owe Hawkins a few million. At UGA that would not be a problem. At CU, that is a big problem. 2.) There aren’t any high school football players in the state of Colorado. Roughly 15 division 1 prospects each year in state and only about half a dozen SEC caliber players produced by the state each year. That isn’t enough to compete (assuming you can keep 100% which CU has not been doing). There is no real in state competition with CSU and Air force, but even if you sign every one of the top 8 kids from Colorado , you don’t have much of a recruiting class. The neighboring states don’t offer much either. Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Western Kansas aren’t exactly recruiting hotbeads. Richt would have to spend a ton of time in TX and CA and I don’t think he would like that. he is a family guy.

3.) The university and the town of Boulder aren’t interested in having a good team. I’m not saying that it is intentionally sabatoged, but I’m saying they aren’t going to give the coach the rescources to compete. It isn’t a priority like it is in the SEC.

4.) There are additionally restrictions at CU that don’t exist at ANY other school. This is part of #3 above. One example: a recruit must back in the dorm by 11 PM during his recruiting visit. Yes, you read that right, he has to be tucked in by 11 PM. If not, his scholly offer is yanked. At UGA and tech and all Southern Schools, the high school kids party all night long. Calving Johnson remarked that he was out until 3 or 4 in the morning at both tech and Georgia during his visit when he was in high school and he had a ball. What do you think the parties are like at Texas and USC? When you visit CU, at 10:45 on Saturday night, you have to hustle back to the dorm for bed check. There might be a guy or two that actually signs with CU BECAUSE of this. David Pollack might have liked that, but most guys are going to laugh at it or might not even take the visit.

Boulder is a terrific place to live, but it isn’t a great place to be a college football coach.

Cool! Its about time . Funny thing nobody in the SEC is interested in his sorry underachieving aizse. We should have went after Bama’s strong while we had a chance.

Georgia program is headed in the wrong direction and has been Since richt took over. His best years were with Donnan’s Players. He keeps blaming every one but the man in the mirror.

Get rid of him as soon as you can and lets build this program up right again before Richt does so much damage that it cant be rebuilt. South Carolina has already passed us in the few years Spurrier has been there.

I say fire him before our invite to what ever WTF bowl we are invited to and start the search immediately so we can have things in place before training day.
