Georgia saw Cam Newton as ‘more of a tight end prospect’

ATHENS – Sound bites from Mark Richt’s news conference today:

  • On Auburn quarterback Cam Newton: “Just when you thought [Tim] Tebow left town, he showed up again in another jersey.”
  • On recruiting Newton as a high school player: “I remember him. He was a very talented guy, a guy that we did look at. We actually had him pegged as more of a tight end prospect. A lot of it had to do with what we like to do offensively,  more of a fit [issue] than any disrespect to his ability to play quarterback. He’s proven to be pretty darn good, though.”
  • On whether he expects Newton to be distracted by all the controversy swirling around him: “It was swirling last week.  It didn’t seem to bother him last week. So I doubt it. . . . Usually, when you start playing ball, no matter what’s going on around you, it’s  a haven for an athlete be in his element and shut the world out and go have some fun and play ball.”
  • On who will simulate Newton in Georgia’s practices this week: “Well, we’ve got Parker Welch, just because he’s been our scout-team quarterback all along. And one of the best similarities I guess I could say he has to Cam is he wears No. 2 this week. Parker, he’s a great scout-team quarterback. He throws the ball real good. He’s doing great for us. But he’s not 6-6, 250. It’s just a little different.”
  • On Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley: “I’ve not really seen any one man block him. I rarely have seen two guys block him very well. I’ve seen him get a sack without even touching the quarterback –- he knocked a guard into the running back and then the running back into the quarterback and the quarterback got knocked down.  . . .  And then when he sacks guys, he tends to like to body slam them. It makes me real nervous. Hopefully, [Aaron] Murray won’t see this press conference.”
  • On whether Georgia figures it can get the ball downfield to A.J. Green vs. Auburn: “You know what the biggest problem is? The biggest problem in my opinion is Nick Fairley. Because when you’re talking about getting the ball downfield to A.J., to do that you’ve got to hold the ball a little while. And it’s hard to hold the ball a little while when that guy is coming. Because he is relentless. I think Ben Jones is a pretty good center, and I think Cordy [Glenn] is a pretty good guard, but I tell you: This guy, he’s a lot to handle. . . .  Fifteen quarterback hurries, 18 tackles for loss, 7 ½ sacks — those are huge numbers for an interior defensive linemen. Those are [Warren] Sapp type of numbers. . . . Nick, he’s the closest thing I’ve seen to Warren Sapp in all the years I’ve been coaching.
  • On the high profile of Saturday’s game: “We know everybody in the country is going to watch the game, but they’re probably tuning in to watch Auburn. Hopefully we’ll show up and give them something to watch.”
  • On Arkansas’ victory over South Carolina last week, an outcome that would have boosted Georgia’s chances of reaching the SEC title game IF the Bulldogs had beaten Florida on Oct. 30: “I was sick. I’ll be honest with you; I was sick. . . . If we had won the Florida game, we’d have been in position to go to Atlanta depending on what happens this Saturday in Florida vs. South Carolina. And it would have been a wonderful story. But it’s not.”

I am VERY excited to hear Cam Newton explain the open case he has in Alachua County, Florida right now regarding “Driving with a suspended license”….. you know, the same charge that has gotten several UGA football players ARRESTED.

Here, look for yourself, it’s the 13th (thirteenth!!!) traffic violation on this list of his violations while at Florida

https://www.alachuaclerk.org/court_records/gis/index.cfm?section=results

Any Auburn fans wan to help him out in his explanation??

Sanford Drive….

That’s incredible!! How on earth do you get 13 traffic violations in such a short time at UF. 3 times driving without his license on him, running a red light twice?

But yes, the most interesting thing is the open case about the suspended license. I never heard of an arrest for this…. I am sure it happened.

I think the Cam Newton scandel’s surface has only ben scratched.

So, you know Farley is there, make sure he gets blocked. When you have a problem with a defensive player like Farley most OC will run at him or make sure Murray does a lot of rollouts. We’ve said all along UGA needs a better person that evaluates talent because we are missing out on a lot of good instate talent. In the off season we not only need a OC but the entire offensive staff needs to questioned and so does the Recruiting Coordinator. We have not done a top job recruiting or coaching up our players over the last four years and it needs to change next year.

Agree with CMR on Fairley–he is dangerous. Interestingly, when we were yapping last summer here, I picked Auburn to win the West…and UGA to win the East! So, maybe the Dawgs will start playing up to their potential (at least in my eyes). Auburn is loaded with talent, particularly on offense. We need to win the turnover battle. I might be tempted to run a 3-3-4 with Ogletree shadowing Cam Tebow from the other ILB position. Unfortunately, Cam isn’t their only weapon. CMB needs to come out swinging–we need to shoot for 50 points in this one. That way if we fall a little short, we still have a chance against them. Good luck Dawgs!

Earth to MURPHY – Richt is right… you recruit guys that fit your scheme. Newton is a spread QB and not a NFL type pocket passer that’s prepared to throw 35 times a game. Newton is primarily a run threat.

Lastly, it’s impossible to predict how kids are going to translate from HS to college. Some 5 stars sink like rocks when they get to college and then you have guys like Kenarius Gates who slid into last years class on the last day and is now starting as a true freshman. Who’s the genius for recruiting Gates, huh?

I guess we didn’t want a 6′ 6″ QB who can pass and run…..it just confuses things.

Not all tall guys play basketball, and not all tall football players should be TEs…..

We need to open up our minds, and not be quite so narrow in our thinking.

I hear Dan Hawkins is available.

The other thing I wish we would do: put Gray in motion, fake/handoff to the FB, TB is lead blocker, and pitch it to Gray for rollout run/pass option. (Much the way Tech and Navy run the option). Put Green toward the flag so he can seal off against Gray’s throw. This is a no-brainer…can’t believe we haven’t used it yet.

Murphy…if you don’t have something constructive to say, just don’t say anything. It’s a different opinion based on what we do on offense. If you don’t like what we do, then go apply and see if the AD will hire you. It’s ok, to voice your opinion on these blogs, but we have a system and they felt that he fit better as a TE. I think CMR realizes that he is a great QB. You and several others on here are always slamming the Dawgs, CMR,CTG,CMB, etc…! You want them to win, I get it. I want them to win, we are together on that. CMR isn’t going anywhere, the buyout is way too big! Plus, personally I think he is the right man for the job. Take away some costly turnovers in 3 of 5 games and things are much different. Players have to make plays! Our coaches have put them in that position and unfortunately they haven’t come through very often this year. I heard several commentators say the same thing and all you have to do is look at the games and you see it too. Will we both be pulling for the Dawgs this Sat. Go Dawgs!!

The key for Georgia on Saturday is to PUNISH Cam Newton. Ogletree should be placed on Pitbull alert and dogging Newton all game. We’re going to have to throw blitzes from every angle against the WarPlainsmen to put pressure on CM and get him to make some mistakes.

We have nothing to lose, we should rollout the kitchen sink on Saturday. Memo to Bobo get Smith the ball on offense, that kid is a speed demon. Throw it to him, hand it off to him etc. Brandon should get 7-10 touches on Saturday.

DawgByte – Earth to you…you are an idiot! It’s understood that Cameron is best suited for a “spread offense”, but a coaches job is to evaluate talent and place that talent in the best position to be successful…which Richt clearly can’t do. Please don’t give me “he doesn’t fit our system crap”. Just another small example in the bigger picture that Mark/his coaching staff/and his system need to be purged immediately.

I think it’s appropriate to analyze recruiting from a strategic perspective, because tactically as I mentioned – it’s a crap shoot.

I think Rodney Garner is a good recruiter, but I’m seeing some chinks in his armour, particularly with our DL’s and DB’s over the last 5 years. We haven’t had a dominating line in more than 5 years. Our DB’s have been a weakness for a number of years and we are almost finished with the 2010 season and we’re still trying to find the best combination of DB’s. I think Richt is going to have to look at our recruiting from a strategic perspective and ask some tough questions. Personally, I think we are lacking a few David Pollack type players on D. When Rambo admits publicly that this defensive unit is mentally weak that should sound the alarm bells!

sure is funny how Florida can end up in the SEC CG, and now Urban Crier is having to say he didn’t have anything to do with all of this about C Newton…is it me, or am i the only one who could see him stirring things up a little bit…maybe HE didn’t leak anything, but i’m sure one of HIS assistants sure could have been asked too..

and as far as that arrest record, you think he’d be on UGA’s team right now?

DawgByte

Dawg73 -

Huh, can you say clueless? I know you could.

Let’s say Richt signs Cam and then lets play out his first year at Florida. Newton gets caught stealing and has 13 driving violations. How long do we actually have Cam Newton? Less than one year, because he’d be kicked off the team.

Auburn rolled the dice on Newton and they now have a double edge sword. On one side they have a Heisman candidate and on the other they have the NCAA looking up their shorts. There’s a likely possibility Cam may be permanently suspended if the investigations don’t go his way.

One more point twinkle toes. We had Matt Stafford at the time we were looking at Newton, so Richt and company weren’t actively seeking a potential QB controversy.

Does he have 13 traffic violations at the Barn? Get yer shovel and keep diggin’ doggie boy.

Someone on Georgia’s o-line needs to knock the crap out of Fairley. He is the dirtiest player I’ve seen this year and makes a habit of slamming quarterbacks into the ground. If he was in the NFL, he would have been suspended or fined already. They won’t do it to him though because it would hurt Auburn’s title chances.

URBAN NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THIS:

Chris Rainey was put on Pre-Trail Intervention. This does not mean his case is “over’ or “resolved” or that Rainey has “taken care” of his charges for felony stalking/threats.

Pre-Trial Intervention, or what lawyers call PTI ( and I dont mean Pardon the Interuption).
A defendent is placed on PROBATION prior to a case going to disposition.
This probation is like any other probation that a convicted defendent would receive. So, in essence, Florida is playing Rainey while he is on probation. Myer didnt need a conviction to indefinitely suspend Rainey, but by being on probation, Rainey gets reinstated. Come on Man!!!!

I am a Florida lawyer. I know what PTI means. Its not pretty. Yes its better than an immediate conviction, but trust me, Rainey is not out of the woods by no means.

Sorry, but the Alachua county/Cam Newton post just made me think of Rainey.

DawgByte – The point that you made earlier wasn’t that somehow you were justifying Richt’s recruitment of Newton at tight end and not quarterback. With all felonies aside, it’s clear that Mark and his player evaluation is severely lacking.

In regards to the NCAA, let’s not overlook players on this current team that have already gotten in trouble/penalized for poor behavior (Green, King, Ealey, Mettenberger) to name a few. If you wanted to, you could your previous defense of Newton/Richt and use it accordingly (as to why Richt went out on a limb to bring these young men to UGA).

I don’t see any problem with UGA projecting Newton as a TE. We run a pro set offense which is not suited to Newton’s incredible abilities. He may have fit our offensive scheme about as well as Brantley has fit UF’s offensive scheme.
