Fox: Thompkins ‘a long way away from playing’

From AJC correspondent Andy Johnston …

Preseason SEC player of the year Trey Thompkins will not play in Georgia’s season opener Friday night against Mississippi Valley State while he recovers from a high ankle sprain.

“He’s been living in the training room,” coach Mark Fox said Tuesday. “It’s still swollen. He’s able to walk on it, I think, but it’s still in a protective boot. We’ll keep aggressively treating him and re-evaluating him every couple of days.”

Thompkins, who averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds last year, injured his right ankle chasing a loose ball in a scrimmage on Oct. 30. He watched from the bench as Georgia defeated Augusta State 85-48 in an exhibition game on Thursday.

Fox isn’t sure when Thompkins will be ready to play.

“My trainer came today and said he did a little better,” Fox said. “I said, ‘So he gets to play and dress out?’ He said, ‘No.’ … He’s a long way away from playing. I know that.”

It is important to get Trey back. It is more important to get him back with a healed ankle. We will be even better when he returns.

Thompkins has a history filled with ankle problems.
I’m afraid it’s going to plague him throughout his career.

Since chances are Trey wont be with us next year, this should be a good opportunity for younger prospects to get more playing time and show what they can do. Plenty of time before the SEC schedule gets cranked up. I would rather know his ankle is completely healed before he comes back, so that this will not be a recurring injury all year when the games really matter and we need our best players on the court.

High ankle sprains are tough injuries. We might not see him until January. Dang!

Those sprains are tricky little devils. Had one in my knee that took 6 weeks to finally heal. No fun, and you have to stay on top of it like he seems to be doing.

God, I don’t even know why I frequent these sites. “bball,” who cares? We have a pre-season first-team player on the bench with an injury, and all you can say is, “who cares?” I know there’s way too much punctuation in those sentences for you to comprehend, but why bother posting? the only reason he has the injury is becuase he came back to play for UGA in the first place, you moron. Same for Travis Leslie. Gary, good point. Best of wishes for a speedy recovery, Trey. i know it;’s gotta hurt being out right now. We love you and can’t wait for you to be back on the court for conference play. Go Dawgs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tech fan but I am looking forward to seeing you guys this year. Fox was
competitive last year. Should be improved. Good luck except for one.

High ankle sprains are worse than broken bones as far as I’m concerned. I’ve had one high ankle sprain and it hurt more and took longer to heal than just about anything else I’ve been dealt. Get well soon Trey. I hope you get back by the Tech game…if not, before conference play starts.

Hey, understand – St. Simons is just eight. He has learned how to “hunt and peck” and this is all he knows. His old man has brain washed him regarding Tech. As you can see on here, some Tech fans have class. To those that do, thanks!

I’m a Tech guy, but I hate to see you guys lose Thompkins for any length of time. Hope he heals up and has a great career. Except for one game….

There’s no need to rush Trey back to playing before that ankle is 100%. As long as he gets back by conference time that will be fine.

@ bball – who cares? Let’s see, the pre-season player of the year is injured. I think quite a few people care.

Man, this really hurts because I think the Dawgs are poised to have a great season with Trey in the lineup. Please don’t rush him back! Let’s make sure he is healed before he returns, hopefully by the game against Notre Dame on 11/25. Or at least I hope he’s ready by the GT game on 12/7. Go Fox and Go Dawgs!

“Andy”, “Burdell” and “Itstheshoes”,
Y’all show great “class”; thank you!

Hopefully Tre will be full strength and fully healed before CMF puts him back in the lineup. This is a great opportunity for all the other players to step it up. This could be a pretty good season for the Dogs if Tre stays healthy when he does return. I hope along with “Woodstock Dawg” that it sure would be great if Tre was back by 11/25.

Does the AJC even realize that UGA had a basketball game tonight. This so called dark horse team in the SEC beat Mighty Mississippi Valley State University (who won all of 8 games last year) by 2 points – course the AJC didn’t have ANY coverage of it. What a slack a## newspaper
