A few notes to start the day . . .
- The quarterback that Georgia’s defense will be chasing Saturday is on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. Cam Newton is the first Auburn football player to make the cover of SI’s weekly issue since Bo Jackson 25 years ago, according to the school. Newton shares this week’s cover with TCU’s Andy Dalton and Oregon’s LaMichael James as SI takes a look at the BCS and a possible Auburn-Oregon national-title game. Jackson shared the Dec. 2, 1985, cover with Iowa’s Chuck Long and Plymouth (N.H.) State’s Joe Dudek.
- Not surprisingly, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Newton was a big topic of conversation on Mark Richt’s weekly radio call-in show Monday night. As an example of Newton’s powerful running, Richt mentioned something he saw on Auburn film: a third-and-1 situation against Mississippi State on which Newton ran for the first down and collided with a middle linebacker. “The linebacker, you would think, would just knock his rear end back and make the stop,” Richt said. “But Cam jumps up and runs back to the huddle, and the linebacker is just laying there and they had to carry him off the field. Now, he did finish the game, so he didn’t get hurt too badly, but he got stunned by the big guy.”
- Richt said after last Saturday’s game that he hoped Auburn would be ranked No. 1 in the country this week. A caller asked Monday night why the coach felt that way. “If everyone thinks Auburn is the No. 1 team in the nation and we beat Auburn, they might think Georgia is a pretty darn good team, too,” he said. “That is the opportunity and challenge we want.” Auburn is actually No. 2 in the polls and the BCS standings this week. “1 and 2, it’s about the same — this time of year, anyway,” Richt said.
- As expected, Trey Thompkins‘ high ankle sprain will keep him out of Georgia’s basketball opener Friday night against Mississippi Valley State, coach Mark Fox said during the second hour of the “Bulldog Hotline” show Monday. “It’s a third-degree sprain,” Fox said. “It’s a significant injury, and he’s not close to being back. He will not play in the opener. . . . He made a decision to come back to school, and we owe it to Trey to make sure he’s healthy before he steps on the floor. He’s chomping at the bit to come back tomorrow if he could. But our trainers are doing a terrific job, and he’s getting treatment around the clock, basically. So we hope he’ll get back soon, but it’s going to be a little while.” Fox indicated previously that the injury, suffered during a scrimmage on Oct. 30, could sideline Thompkins for two to six weeks.

Like The Georgia Bulldogs haven’t had everything BAD PRESS about us off the field, as Cam Newton has source step forward of Academic Cheating at Florida 3 times in addition to stealing a laptop and in addition to source saying he was being sold for $ 200,000 or $ 180,000 to SEC schools.
At least Auburn has been Winning on the field; something we ALSO have not been doing.
So, Auburn gets all this bad press, AJ-C doesn’t cover it; Fox has it, ESPN has it, Sports Illustrated has it, it is on every major news source in the world.
And, AJ-C bloggers feel that Georgia has something we can say about it. Like we have not had any BAD PRESS ourselves the last 5 years. 2-faced posters.

LOL @ SI. Sucks for Auburn. They’ve got a tough road ahead. We won’t lay down and die. Bama is pizzed. Then they’ll probably face a very hot Florida team in the Dome. I would be shocked if Auburn and its swiss cheese D didn’t drop at least one of these games. If by some miracle they win out, Oregon would probably drop 50+ on them, in which case Cam Newton better not let that Heisman go to his head.
Just not completely sold on this Auburn team. Too many chinks in the armor. Its a down year in the SEC and they are definitely benifitting from it.

I’m not as interested in the Cam Newton gets a second chance to play at AU angle. As far as I know he is clean there. What always astounds me is how things like cheating and DUIs go completely unreported at UF untill somebody digs it out months or years later. Does anyone believe if a UGA player had turned in a fake paper and been caught, that wouldn’t be on the front cover of the Atlanta sport page the next morning?

Is ESPN/NY Times/Fox/AJC or anybody else going to publish a scandal story about Cam Newton that happened recently? At least this season? Ok we get it, he had a bumpy tour at UF, went JUCO for a year, ended up at AU and got a fresh start. Is Newton the only notable 18 yr old athlete in the history of ncaa sports that had issues at some point in time?
So guy A said that guy B said that he could deliver Cam for $180k and others were offering $200k. Guy A changes story last week. Guy B said he hasnt talked to guy A in 20 yrs and denies all. All this happened at another institution that did all the right things. Oh yeah, and theres a church in SW GA that needs repairs but timelines dont match, but who cares, oh and btw, they turned over the records when they are not obligated to, and to date nothing improper found but who cares lets run with the story…. Come on media…report news dont make them. If there’s a smoking gun, yeah bring it, you are expected to. But this is getting old.
Note to the Heisman voters that are bailing on Newton for his mistakes made 2 or 3 years ago: Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t OJ Simpson have a Heisman award that no one has asked to return? That’s OJ Simpson for F***sake!! Think about it, get some perspective.

Dogville continues to boast and bark that they will beat Auburn. Even Dogville’s saintly coach states IF the dogs beat Auburn, then they MIGHT be considered a good team. A very lame response from a coach that recruits consistently five star talent, but consistently does not produce. Beating hapless teams to improve your record to 5-5, does not equate the illusion of a good team. Granted with the negative press surounding Auburn at the moment, the dogs COULD luck up and beat Auburn. That win, however, would not make the dogs a good team. Dogville will be crying again after this lose and sadly, Bobo will be the brunt of the team’s season and will be fired at the end of the season, thus saving the saintly Richt once more.

In two short years a little – known and bargain priced Head Coach has turned that program around.
Newton is a talented QB and is the pilot of possibly the best college Offense in the country right now.
They are winners.
With 10 years under his belt Richt is losing and feels fortunate to have an even record right now.
The Auburn – Georgia Game is one of the oldest and greatest matchups in the country.
Regrettably, Richt will not field a quality team against The Tigers.

Has the young man had any problems while at Auburn? He’s repeated a thousand times how he looks back at his prior behavior with embarrassment. Was he mentoring fifth graders at Florida the way he does now ? That’s a more appropriate and timely story. What about any trouble at Blinn J. C.? Has anyone talked to the coach out there? Uga is enrolling a kid that apparently had sexual relations at his high school, and was suspended for the season! There’s a story! Anyway, the real issue is the incredible inability of Richt and Bobo to go after a kid that led his team to a JUCO NATIONAL TITLE, who grew up in Atlanta and attended a high school where three current or former uga players went, and has clearly learned from his mistakes. This falls right in with UGA’S FAILURE to sign other home grown products like Charlie Ward, Sean Jones, and Homer Jordan, each of whom left the state and led their respective schools to national titles! Richt and Bobo are going to get what they deserve this weekend. Also, AREN”T SCHLABACH AND BARNHART JUST A COUPLE OF GREAT GUYS ? Uga grads as well.

As a UGA fan, I am getting tired of all of the crap being dug up and posted about Cam Newton. It seems that all of the little people love to see the man on top of the mountain fall. Just lace ‘em up and start hitting, wouldja?
On a side note, I did notice how many, many legal problems at FL and other schools seem to go unnoticed by the media in that particular town and state. The AJC seems to report every time a UGA player spits on the side walk. I also know that last weekend, the police arrested over 300 minors in possession at Ga. Southern. Imagine what goes on at D1 colleges?? My point is that college kids do this stuff EVERY weekend. Let the legal stuff work it’s way out and let’s play football. Stop bringing that stuff up as mud when you are playing a football game. Will UGA beat AU? 90% of me says NO and it may even get ugly. But AU is a great team this season and UGA is not. We COULD win and I hope we do, but this is Auburn’s year. GO DAWGS!

I’m just hoping for a good game. If I were betting, I’d take Auburn at two touchdowns. Cam Newton is just too big, too fast and he’s pretty much unstoppable. Murray needs to be spot on, UGA receivers need to be lights out and we should have two LB’s shadowing Cam. Take our chances with Auburn’s passing game. King and Ealey ned to keep the chains moving and keep Auburn’s offense off the field. No turnovers and we may actually be in the game.
Let’s get off all the the Scam Newton and stuff in the past. We have a football game this weekend and he’s going to play. UGA needs to stop him. Can we? We’ll see…..

Interesting how all of this old Cam stuff is coming up now. The NCAA investigation has been going on since June if there were anything to it he certainly would have been pulled off the field by now. The cheating at Florida thing is coming out like it just happened, wasn’t this 3 years ago? If he did have some indiscretions as an 18 year old wasn’t having to enroll in JUCO a consequence of those alleged actions? It appears to me whatever the issues have been in the past he has matured and moved on since then, he seems to be likable, well spoken and displays great leadership qualities.
Nonetheless, those of you who like to throw phrases around like “Thug” code for “N-word” run rampant in these forums and more pointedly these parts. These same people use the term “athletic” when describing Cam and other athletes that look like him as if they are absent of the cerebral characteristics that it takes to succeed at their sport as if they rely on athleticism alone. Get over it, at this point Cam is going to be the first African American quarterback from the south to win the Heisman, Auburn is better than Georgia and there is nothing you can do about it. Take solace in the fact that the south will rise again but the “athletic thug” will be your leader! I do not blame you for your subconscious somewhat subliminal prejudices, some of you may not be cognizant of those facts after all prejudices are learned behaviors and believe me you guys learned those things from the best for that, Iblameurparents….

We have Dyer, Mccalleb and Fannin who can run. We also have two fantastic wide receivers who can tear it up.
As for our defense, our only weakness is our secondary and we were still able to hold LSU to two touchdowns.

A ninth Bulldogs football player has been arrested during this off-season. This time, a freshman safety was arrested on Friday for theft by taking — allegedly stealing a $35 helmet from another UGA student’s scooter.
According to the police, a freshman student reported on June 15 that his helmet had been stolen from his scooter, which had been parked outside the Rankin Smith Center. The helmet, which was red with gray skulls on each side linked by a graphic of a chain around the back of the helmet, had been left on the scooter unsecured.

Information such as he wrote is covered under the Privacy Act. Releasing such information can result in criminal charges and potential lawsuits.
Do you really think some administrator at UF is willing to put his career in jeopardy in order to assist Faux Sports with a persecution campaign? I don’t.
The stuff about the $180,000 at Mississippi State rests solely on the word of a disgruntled MSU booster, a former QB there who says “somebody told him” that a street agent was trying to scam MSU. The street agent denies it. There has not been ONE SHRED of evidence presented .
Maybe the AJC has some journalistic integrity and won’t print stories that have no basis in fact.

Dont understand all these ‘ other team fans” meaning non Georgia supporters. Shane I think you are right….lets see Cam Newton, has 13 traffic offenses. The AJC lives in the traffic shorts of every Georgia player including walk ons. But no mention of this when at Florida and no mention of this now by the AJC. No a guy on a blog puts it out there. He seems to be more of a journalist then most of the AJC writers. At least he knows to look up public information.
Fox reports cheating by Newton at Florida. Do we see the great writers of the AJC doing anything except mentioning the article. No. The guy is at Auburn, he is the darling of the AJC and the Auburn crowd. In the past I have called my beloved Georgia football program a life style program for the coaches. Meaning they do just enough to keep their jobs.
I will take that one step further. The AJC sports department is nothing but a life style sports department. Where so called writers do nothing more than blog links from other online publications and spin it as investigative journalism. Doing just enough to keep their jobs so the editor will not fire them. There certainly seems to be quite a rush to judgement concerning Cam Newton and whether he may or may not have committed plagiarism when he was at UF. I don’t see how it has any effect on his academic eligibility at Auburn. Kids flunk out or transfer for academic reasons all of the time. As long as he is in good standing at AU, he’s eligible to play. It is interesting that these allegations have come out now – his academic record at UF is supposed to be private, so you can bet someone with an agenda leaked it.

Seems pretty simple, wouldn’t it be an the official document as to if Newton was scheduled to appear before the “student affairs” board at UF for multiple accusation of academic cheating? If not, its a hack story. The Miami paper can read the police blotter, but the crack team of reporters who LIVE in the blotters around here can’t? The AJC even purposely wrote headlines to make it seem like it was a NEW story when the UGA players eventually dealt with their student advisory on the same thing that had been already reported and run into the ground.

The Auburn/Clemson game was as physical a game as I’ve still seen all year. But I thought Clemson should have won, and actually looked better. Being that Clemson is one of those parity-ridden ACC teams in a down year for the ACC, I think uga has a real chance. AU’s defense isn’t as good as MSU’s. I’m a Tech fan, so this is a 3rd-party opinion.

Personally I don’t think Richt can hang with Meyer, Saban, and Miles and if he can’t hang he needs to go. There is no short of talent in Athens, never has been, ask Spurrier. When scrubs like Crompton look like Heisman candidates saying “we knew exactly what they were going to do”, that’s a problem. Richt and Bobo continually get out coached every week. We wast talent like nobody i’ve ever seen.
We will have 2 top 3 picks, 3 top 15 picks and 4 first round picks in 3 years on the offense. They all played on the same field for a year. Auburn has no defense either and they only have 1 player.

I misspoke earlier on this blog and said that Washaun Ealey stole a motorcycle helment and plagirized an English paper. Washaun actually was the hit and run, no license driver. The paper he plagirized was a punishment essay for not evacuating a building during a fire drill. Ealey is on probation with the University for three conduct code violations. I correctly said that he had to sit out the first, meaningless game of the season. When you have a lot of arrests, it is easy to get the charges confused.

I agree ARDawg, those should have been victories, but the comment I was responding to was that beating Auburn wouldn’t mean that UGA was playing better now, as Richt suggested, but it would only equate to what was minimal expectations that UGA should have been able to beat AU (at thier current level) back in our week one.
So, no UGA was not expected to have the potential to beat the #2 team in the country every week from the very beginning of the season. That expectation, was reserved for Alabama.

Time for Cam Newton to face off against UGA’s #2 rush defense. Usually doesn’t do well aginst teams that stop the run. Miss St., Newton ran for lessthan 75 yards, and Auburn only scored 17. UGA can put up points on offense better than Miss St., so I see this UGA 31, Auburn 24.
