Cam Newton is on SI cover — and on Bulldog Nation’s mind

A few notes to start the day . . .

  • The quarterback that Georgia’s defense will be chasing Saturday is on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. Cam Newton is the first Auburn football player to make the cover of SI’s weekly issue since Bo Jackson 25 years ago, according to the school.  Newton shares this week’s cover with TCU’s Andy Dalton and Oregon’s LaMichael James as SI takes a look at the BCS and a possible Auburn-Oregon national-title game.  Jackson shared the Dec. 2, 1985, cover with Iowa’s Chuck Long and Plymouth (N.H.) State’s Joe Dudek.
  • Not surprisingly, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Newton was a big topic of conversation on Mark Richt’s weekly radio call-in show Monday night.  As an example of Newton’s powerful running, Richt mentioned something he saw on Auburn film: a third-and-1 situation against Mississippi State on which  Newton ran for the first down and collided with a middle linebacker.  “The linebacker, you would think, would just knock his rear end back and make the stop,” Richt said. “But Cam jumps up and runs back to the huddle, and the linebacker is just laying there and they had to carry him off the field. Now, he did finish the game, so he didn’t get hurt too badly, but he got stunned by the big guy.”
  • Richt said after last Saturday’s game that he hoped Auburn would be ranked No. 1 in the country this week. A caller asked Monday night why the coach felt that way. “If everyone thinks Auburn is the No. 1 team in the nation and we beat Auburn, they might think Georgia is a pretty darn good team, too,” he said. “That is the opportunity and challenge we want.” Auburn is actually No. 2 in the polls and the BCS standings this week. “1 and 2, it’s about the same — this time of year, anyway,” Richt said.
  • As expected, Trey Thompkins‘ high ankle sprain will keep him out of Georgia’s basketball opener Friday night against Mississippi Valley State, coach Mark Fox said during the second hour of the “Bulldog Hotline” show Monday.  “It’s a third-degree sprain,” Fox said. “It’s a significant injury, and he’s not close to being back. He will not play in the opener. . . . He made a decision to come back to school, and we owe it to Trey to make sure he’s healthy before he steps on the floor. He’s chomping at the bit to come back tomorrow if he could. But our trainers are doing a terrific job, and he’s getting treatment around the clock, basically. So we hope he’ll get back soon, but it’s going to be a little while.” Fox indicated previously that the injury, suffered during a scrimmage on Oct. 30, could sideline Thompkins for two to six weeks.
  • More later today . . .

This is pathetic. I don’t think we have any room to be bashing other team’s players and calling them “thugs”. Aren’t you sick of hearing other fans call our players “thugs” for making stupid mistakes and bad decisions? Half of the men on this blog were “thugs” when they were teenagers and early 20s. I’m sick of hearing it leveled at our players (who are growing and learning how to be men), and I’m sick of hearing it about other team’s players. Give it a rest.

It’s football played by very young men who are extremely talented.

gee I recall some football team with colors of red and black on the cover of SI just two years ago, then the roof caved in, wonder where they are now? Vying for their 6th win just to make it to a bowl game

As long as he’s not dragging Georgia players across the goal line wearing a Florida uniform it really doesn’t bother me. Having read about some of his discipline problems at Florida, I’m thinking the Georgia program may be subject to more scrutiny than some of oue SEC counterparts. Congrads to Auburn and hopefully South Carolina good to see some new faces in the dome.

It’s really sad how the media tries to bring people down. The more dirt they dig up, the better. Even if they can’t prove anything and have no verifiable information from credible sources, they will report it any way under the guise of “news” and “the people need to know”. By creating rumor and innuendo and pandering to the lowest common denominators of society, the media will sell more papers and get more website hits and get more radio listeners and tv viewers, etc. It’s all so pitiful. How about we let Cam play football on Saturday without all this crap swirling around him. Where is “innocent until proven guilty”? Leave him alone and let’s play football. I want to beat Auburn Saturday with Cam at QB anyway…GO DAWGS !!! SIC EM !!! somehting

LOL! Is the what you call Auburn? Auburn can only dream of achieving what UGA has. They have half as many SEC championships.

Personally I don’t think Richt can hang with Meyer, Saban, and Miles and if he can’t hang he needs to go. There is no short of talent in Athens, never has been, ask Spurrier. When scrubs like Crompton look like Heisman candidates saying “we knew exactly what they were going to do”, that’s a problem. Richt and Bobo continually get out coached every week. We wast talent like nobody i’ve ever seen.

We will have 2 top 3 picks, 3 top 15 picks and 4 first round picks in 3 years on the offense. They all played on the same field for a year. Auburn has no defense either and they only have 1 player.

Talking about getting rattled! Newton sees the cover of SI and his head spins then hears about his cheating at Florida, unresolved traffic violations, buying stolen property, etc. Would make most teenagers go off the deep end…

I would blitz him the first three plays regardless of the outcome!

Richt has a winning record against all those coaches except Meyer ( he has worn Miles out ) and Spurrier.

I’m just going to start posting that Georgia is 47-0 versus Florida because I’m only counting the games Georgia won.

I don’t know why RIcht is saying “if we beat Auburn it will prove we have a pretty good team.” No coach it means the team played up to its potential. Pretty much the same potential it has had all year give or take some learning on the defensive side of the ball.

and give and take a freshman QB playing in his first few games ever. and give or take your best player.

I don’t think anyone was saying that UGA was supposed to be beating, or had the potential to be beating a team (at AU level now) all year long were they?

Let's Talk About UGA!

Cam’s picture is not only on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

I was digging around for cash, so I could score some weed, and I found a picture of him in Mama’s purse.

Enough of the crap about Newton… how in the hell can all of you people dismiss is obvious disregard of authority not to mention obeying the law…

13 trafic violations in what 12 to 18 months– that is freaking pathetic… and now cheating allegations to go along with the pay for play rumors… Hello idiots— if there is smoke – there is fire….

… and for why UGA never recruited him- they did; but, he chose to go play in a spread offense at Florida ( that right there shows a serious lack of judgement if your wanting to prep for an opportunity at the next level )

Every stop this kid has made he has f’d up in one fashion or another…. Auburn may be able to hide the indescretions or make them go away; but, s&*^ always floats to the top… Enjoy it why you can…

The number 2 team in the country? I didn’t have those aspirations but the Missy Sts and Colorado’s easily should have been a victory and 1 of two versus Ark and SC. This Georgia team even in a “rebuilding” or “realignment” team were capable nut, IMO were not led

Boweevil, sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your reply. I was searching for a translator who is fluent in ebonics. LEARN HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH. And to think i’ve spent the last 29 years of my life defending people like you so you can come on this blog, and show us your mastery of the english language. Is this a great country or what?

I misspoke earlier on this blog and said that Washaun Ealey stole a motorcycle helment and plagirized an English paper. Washaun actually was the hit and run, no license driver. The paper he plagirized was a punishment essay for not evacuating a building during a fire drill. Ealey is on probation with the University for three conduct code violations. I correctly said that he had to sit out the first, meaningless game of the season. When you have a lot of arrests, it is easy to get the charges confused.

If the NCAA is investigating they will find something. Probably something completely unrelated but that’s what happens when NCAA hits town. They hate when someone is making money besides them.

I agree ARDawg, those should have been victories, but the comment I was responding to was that beating Auburn wouldn’t mean that UGA was playing better now, as Richt suggested, but it would only equate to what was minimal expectations that UGA should have been able to beat AU (at thier current level) back in our week one.

So, no UGA was not expected to have the potential to beat the #2 team in the country every week from the very beginning of the season. That expectation, was reserved for Alabama.

(and clearly I took that comment way to literally to make a point, but what the hell)

Its official…Cam Newton took MORE than TWO scoops of Raisins for his Raisin Brand…He gave Lincoln the tickets to the theater…caused Katrina…the oil spill…and he is even responsible when one of your socks is missing from the dryer…The game will be interesting this Saturday…as an Auburn fan, I had circled this game on the schedule as the trouble spot this year…I am simply hoping that Cam takes out all the frustrations of not being able to tell the hacks at espn and fox sports off on Georgia…

Time for Cam Newton to face off against UGA’s #2 rush defense. Usually doesn’t do well aginst teams that stop the run. Miss St., Newton ran for lessthan 75 yards, and Auburn only scored 17. UGA can put up points on offense better than Miss St., so I see this UGA 31, Auburn 24.
