Cam Newton is on SI cover — and on Bulldog Nation’s mind
A few notes to start the day . . .
- The quarterback that Georgia’s defense will be chasing Saturday is on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. Cam Newton is the first Auburn football player to make the cover of SI’s weekly issue since Bo Jackson 25 years ago, according to the school. Newton shares this week’s cover with TCU’s Andy Dalton and Oregon’s LaMichael James as SI takes a look at the BCS and a possible Auburn-Oregon national-title game. Jackson shared the Dec. 2, 1985, cover with Iowa’s Chuck Long and Plymouth (N.H.) State’s Joe Dudek.
- Not surprisingly, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Newton was a big topic of conversation on Mark Richt’s weekly radio call-in show Monday night. As an example of Newton’s powerful running, Richt mentioned something he saw on Auburn film: a third-and-1 situation against Mississippi State on which Newton ran for the first down and collided with a middle linebacker. “The linebacker, you would think, would just knock his rear end back and make the stop,” Richt said. “But Cam jumps up and runs back to the huddle, and the linebacker is just laying there and they had to carry him off the field. Now, he did finish the game, so he didn’t get hurt too badly, but he got stunned by the big guy.”
- Richt said after last Saturday’s game that he hoped Auburn would be ranked No. 1 in the country this week. A caller asked Monday night why the coach felt that way. “If everyone thinks Auburn is the No. 1 team in the nation and we beat Auburn, they might think Georgia is a pretty darn good team, too,” he said. “That is the opportunity and challenge we want.” Auburn is actually No. 2 in the polls and the BCS standings this week. “1 and 2, it’s about the same — this time of year, anyway,” Richt said.
- As expected, Trey Thompkins‘ high ankle sprain will keep him out of Georgia’s basketball opener Friday night against Mississippi Valley State, coach Mark Fox said during the second hour of the “Bulldog Hotline” show Monday. “It’s a third-degree sprain,” Fox said. “It’s a significant injury, and he’s not close to being back. He will not play in the opener. . . . He made a decision to come back to school, and we owe it to Trey to make sure he’s healthy before he steps on the floor. He’s chomping at the bit to come back tomorrow if he could. But our trainers are doing a terrific job, and he’s getting treatment around the clock, basically. So we hope he’ll get back soon, but it’s going to be a little while.” Fox indicated previously that the injury, suffered during a scrimmage on Oct. 30, could sideline Thompkins for two to six weeks.

You, like many other delusional fans in the SEC, don’t give Auburn enough credit as a team. We have MANY other weapons that will be on display this Saturday. Trust me, it’s not just Cam who can run. We have Dyer, Mccalleb and Fannin who can run. We also have two fantastic wide receivers who can tear it up.
As for our defense, our only weakness is our secondary and we were still able to hold LSU to two touchdowns.
Nick Fairly is going to tear Murray a new one.

ANOTHER UGA FOOTBALL PLAYER ARRESTED, THIS TIME FOR THEFT
A ninth Bulldogs football player has been arrested during this off-season. This time, a freshman safety was arrested on Friday for theft by taking — allegedly stealing a $35 helmet from another UGA student’s scooter.
According to the police, a freshman student reported on June 15 that his helmet had been stolen from his scooter, which had been parked outside the Rankin Smith Center. The helmet, which was red with gray skulls on each side linked by a graphic of a chain around the back of the helmet, had been left on the scooter unsecured.

We will stop Cam for sure, even though our season is up in smoke.
Now, um, ah, I am wondering IF Sabin really will take that Michigan job now. He apparently has done all that he could for us and we are gonna end up in the Chic Fil A Bowl at best. He has gone as far as he can and form here on out he cannot ever amtch last year.

I don’t care much about Cam’s past, just that he’s straightening himself out and growing up. As for his talent… not since Bo Jackson has Auburn had such a talent. He is just “Plainsmen” fun to watch. Nothing he did in the past can take away his accomplishments on the field. I hope he has a great game, scores 50 points, and loses to the Dawgs by ONE. Go Dawgs… and spare us the fire hoses, Barners! First, get your facts straight: Newton did not “steal a laptop”. Check it out. Second, a source has not “stepped forth” at Florida. A writer for Fox Sports that has already written one article urging Heisman voters not to vote for Newton but to vote for the Boise State QB says he has “a source”. I don’t believe him. Information such as he wrote is covered under the Privacy Act. Releasing such information can result in criminal charges and potential lawsuits.
Do you really think some administrator at UF is willing to put his career in jeopardy in order to assist Faux Sports with a persecution campaign? I don’t.
The stuff about the $180,000 at Mississippi State rests solely on the word of a disgruntled MSU booster, a former QB there who says “somebody told him” that a street agent was trying to scam MSU. The street agent denies it. There has not been ONE SHRED of evidence presented .
Maybe the AJC has some journalistic integrity and won’t print stories that have no basis in fact.

Dont understand all these ‘ other team fans” meaning non Georgia supporters. Shane I think you are right….lets see Cam Newton, has 13 traffic offenses. The AJC lives in the traffic shorts of every Georgia player including walk ons. But no mention of this when at Florida and no mention of this now by the AJC. No a guy on a blog puts it out there. He seems to be more of a journalist then most of the AJC writers. At least he knows to look up public information.
Fox reports cheating by Newton at Florida. Do we see the great writers of the AJC doing anything except mentioning the article. No. The guy is at Auburn, he is the darling of the AJC and the Auburn crowd. Yet when AJ was having his trouble ( that rightfully he was punished because he screwed up) the AJC and the people like WAR DAMN EAGLE was all over it. Funny now Newton is just an honest kid trying to get a second chance. People were all over the QB from OLE Miss ( who had graduated by the way) for screwing up and going to another school. But if its one of the Alabama schools well its okay, its alright, he deserves a second chance.
I say I say…where is Bradley or Shultzie on this development. Ah nowhere that is where.
This Newton story has a rotten smelly finish coming, watch it develop.
Oh and as it does you can bet the AJC will be the LAST place where anyone writes a piece about it. That is not referencing ESPN or Fox or someone elses journalism or research or work. Cannot remember when the last time AJC broke some news. unless it was a UGA walkon traffic ticket.

This is old news. They didn’t press charges for it was stolen and then sold. All this was reported a year ago plus. The kid paid his dues and now some big schools thats hurting this year are trying to bring Cam and Auburn down. Good damn lucky. The AJC is also running this old crap to get news and support for Dawgs. Newton is not quilty and Auburn will beat UGA by at least 14 points.
!st are 2nd Coach Richt, UGA will lose big time. Keep the Crap coming.

In the past I have called my beloved Georgia football program a life style program for the coaches. Meaning they do just enough to keep their jobs.
I will take that one step further. The AJC sports department is nothing but a life style sports department. Where so called writers do nothing more than blog links from other online publications and spin it as investigative journalism. Doing just enough to keep their jobs so the editor will not fire them. Every once in a while stirring the pot, so they can say look, my blog readership is up 50% because I mad our biggest readership fan base …UGA supporters mad because I said x.
And they wonder why subscriptions are down.
