Georgia-Auburn: ‘It’s what college football is all about,’ Chizik says

It isn’t the bitterest of Georgia’s football rivalries. Just the oldest and most competitive.

Georgia and Auburn first played in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park in 1892. They have played 113 times since then. Auburn has won 53. Georgia has won 52. They have tied eight.

So, if Georgia were to win this year’s meeting at Auburn on Saturday, the Deep South’s oldest college-football rivalry would pull completely even at 53-53-8.

After all these games, all these years, only 56 points separate the teams. Georgia has scored 1,778 and Auburn 1,722.  The average score in their meetings is 15.7-15.2.

“I think that as we go on during the week the younger guys will get a better picture of what this rivalry is and has been over the years and what it’s meant,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said Sunday. “It’s just a great rivalry. It’s what college football is all about.”

At 113 games, the Georgia-Auburn series is older than Georgia-Georgia Tech (102 games) and Auburn-Alabama (74 games).

Georgia has won the past four meetings, the Bulldogs’ longest winning streak in the series since the 1940s. As Chizik mentioned Sunday, no current Auburn player has experienced a win over Georgia.

Over the years, it has been a curious series in that the road team has won more often than the home team. Georgia has an all-time record of 14-9-2 in games played at Auburn, while the Tigers have an 18-11 record in Athens. The series was mostly played at neutral sites from 1892 through 1958.

Another quirk in the Georgia-Auburn series in recent years is that the lower-ranked team has found disproportionate success. Neither team was ranked entering last year’s game, but the lower-ranked or unranked team has won seven of the past 13 meetings when one or both teams were ranked. As you know, Auburn will go into Saturday’s game ranked No. 2 in the nation and Georgia unranked. In the last meeting of a ranked Auburn vs. an unranked Georgia, the Bulldogs upset the No. 5 Tigers 37-15 in 2006 at Auburn.

Wins over Aub and Tech would be Great, but Richt better find a way to beat UF or it will cost him the way Tech cost Donnan…and MB had a great point last week…if Donnan had Replay he would’ve beaten Tech at least once and maybe twice. CMR, most of us are behind you but we NEED to beat the GATORS next year! To McG, schedule a week off before UF every year – keep the game in JAX but only if we can win close to half the time.

Hey Cam, you can get a very good laptop for a few hundred dollars. So, with all that recruiting money, why did you need to steal one?

The thing that replay would not chance is how Donnan had the ability to alienate an entire room of Dawg supporters looking 20 feet past you at the door while begrudginly shaking your hand.

Buddy, I don’t smoke.

And I tend to pay more attention, as most football folks do, to POINTS.

Hell, in ‘08, UGA averaged more yards per game than anybody in the SEC. What did all those yards get us? Capital One Bowl.

I am encouraged to hear how hopeful the Dog fans are. That will make it that much more of a crushing blow when they get blown off the field, and you got it coming. We Auburn fans remember how we were treated inside and outside of the stadium in Athens in 2007 and 2009. The LSU fans are more hospitable in Baton Rouge. But you will be treated with dignity because we are AUBURN. Any fan that travels to support their team on the road has our respect.

I’m not suggesting Donnan should still be coach, just sayin the Boosters/supportes are Powerful and if you don’t give them what they want (in CJD’s day, Beat Tech, In CMR’s day, Beat UF) then you will find yourself in deep doo-doo. CMR is obviously our best coach since Dooley but results are everything.

It has been hard to be a dawg fan for a while when I’m ashamed of my University, players, and coaches for all the B.S. they all put up with. Now I have to read stupid player and fan comments in articles on blogs which is even worse than hearing it in bars and restaurants.

Maybe we can turn over a new leaf next year so some of us can be proud again.

I didn’t read through all the comments to see if it had been mentioned, but great research by the AJC writers. This isn’t the South’s Oldest Rivalry…that belongs to North Carolina and Virginia. It’s the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry..you know, because they wanted some sort of history so just had an adjective.

Altamaha Dawg, I, too, think Grantham’s D will get better, though we will miss Houston. I do worry about the offense. Richt/Bobo’s O is predictable until we get behind and spread the field.

November 8th, 2010

I am truly afraid that once Grantham sees Cam walk onto the field pre game that he really does choke himself. Stop the pass and run, he scrambles. Put a spy on him, he passes or gives of to one of the herd of backs Auburn has in the backfield. Maybe he even catches a touchdown pass, unstoppable… I just hope it is an enjoyable game and not a boring blowout.

2,1,3,2,2,1,2…..those are the number of Auburn’s punts per game in their last 7…..the 3 was against LSU. Fact of the matter is that they’ve been scoring almost every time they get the ball. They’ll probably roll over 500 yds of total offense. UGAs only chance is to get a load of turnovers….

I’m not alone in enjoying our UGA attitude. A little swagger, in your face, bad-boy team, lots of celebrations to fire up the home crowd or taunt our enemies. We are UGA and when we get back on top we will stomp on everybody’s faces after we kick their asses. In the meantime we are street fighters and will kick, claw, and rip our way to respectability and fear. We need a little WWE attitude.

My daddy (RIP) went to UGA and Im just like him. Hunt, fish, run my truck, talelgate, and dont bring my work home. I drink beer and whiskey and chased a few skirts. My kids should go to UGA. If you are a preppy perfumed prince – go to princeton and watch badmitten. If you are a science or math nutjob – go to G.D. G.T and work your ass off the rest of your life including weekends. I’ll stay right here near Athens with my dawgs.

DawgNation,

My daddy (RIP) went to UGA but he flunked out and died in prison.

I, just like he, drink, gamble, and spend time with a probation officer.

My 12 kids will go to UGA on public assistance.

If you’re like me you don’t smell like a perfumed prince, you smell like beer and vomit.

I live here in a trailer park with my dogs.

Anybody want a beer?

Go Dawgs!

Georgia cannot stop Auburn the defense has just not been strong enough in any position.
Murray will need to be alot sharper than the last two weeks and the O-line will need to actually block
and the RB’s run without falling down or fumbling…… UGA will need to score ~50 to win IMO.
Good Luck to my Dawgs!
