It isn’t the bitterest of Georgia’s football rivalries. Just the oldest and most competitive.
Georgia and Auburn first played in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park in 1892. They have played 113 times since then. Auburn has won 53. Georgia has won 52. They have tied eight.
So, if Georgia were to win this year’s meeting at Auburn on Saturday, the Deep South’s oldest college-football rivalry would pull completely even at 53-53-8.
After all these games, all these years, only 56 points separate the teams. Georgia has scored 1,778 and Auburn 1,722. The average score in their meetings is 15.7-15.2.
“I think that as we go on during the week the younger guys will get a better picture of what this rivalry is and has been over the years and what it’s meant,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said Sunday. “It’s just a great rivalry. It’s what college football is all about.”
At 113 games, the Georgia-Auburn series is older than Georgia-Georgia Tech (102 games) and Auburn-Alabama (74 games).
Georgia has won the past four meetings, the Bulldogs’ longest winning streak in the series since the 1940s. As Chizik mentioned Sunday, no current Auburn player has experienced a win over Georgia.
Over the years, it has been a curious series in that the road team has won more often than the home team. Georgia has an all-time record of 14-9-2 in games played at Auburn, while the Tigers have an 18-11 record in Athens. The series was mostly played at neutral sites from 1892 through 1958.
Another quirk in the Georgia-Auburn series in recent years is that the lower-ranked team has found disproportionate success. Neither team was ranked entering last year’s game, but the lower-ranked or unranked team has won seven of the past 13 meetings when one or both teams were ranked. As you know, Auburn will go into Saturday’s game ranked No. 2 in the nation and Georgia unranked. In the last meeting of a ranked Auburn vs. an unranked Georgia, the Bulldogs upset the No. 5 Tigers 37-15 in 2006 at Auburn.

I expect Auburn to be good, however I also expect Georgia’s coaching staff to be outcoached. CMR needs to rethink Bobo as his offensive coordinator if the negative message is registering with the recruits and top talent keeps leaving the state.

And do you Auburn fans think for a second if Cam Newton was at UGA, his recent allegations along with the laptop scandel at Florida wouldn’t justify him as a “Thug” in your eyes.
It’s a simple case of “he is on my team, therefore i will justify his actions” situation for you Auburn Eagles.
Oh, and let us not forget Cam’s quote a few weeks ago, something to the tune of…
“If i had it my way, I would still be at Florida. My heart is still with the Gators. Leaving those wonderful teammates was the hardest part”………
So do you think he wears a Florida t-shirt underneath his Auburn jersey???

For Georgia to have a chance Murray will have to do something he hasn’t done all year…. be accurate in the 1st quarter. He seems to get to keyed up and it takes him about two series to get himself under control.. Auburn will score in the 40’s – can UGA keep up?

This is an great and respectful rivalry. I grew up a die hard Auburn fan having season tickets with my family most years. However, I’m UGA Alumnus, and I’m a Dawg. Going to the Auburn/UGA game last year, I honestly didn’t know who I’d be cheering for until the opening kickoff. But once that ball was kicked in the air I knew I was pulling for the Dawgs.
I’m conflicted again this year. After losing to Florida last week, I though it would make it a lot easier to decide about this week’s game. But I’m still unsure. I think I’ll enjoy it either way.
Auburn has an amazing offense that does not stop at Cam Newton. Anyone who doesn’t see that is delusional. They have great receivers, a great O-Line, and one of the best running backs in the nation.
Georgia has a great freshman QB, some very talented receivers, an an O-line that’s finally showing up.
The people above who claim Auburn is going to blow out the Dawgs, I think, are a little misguided. I honestly think UGA can pull this one out, but I don’t know that we will. The Dawgs are going to score some points. This might end up looking like the Auburn/Arkansas game.
I know it sounds crazy but, War Eagle and Go Dawgs!!!

UGA will keep it close by scoring along with Auburn. It will be a shootout. The team with the least tired defense will win it in the 4th quarter.

Interesting that this piece should point out the long-standing, respectful, series that the Georgia/Auburn rivalry has been. I generally attribute it to the fact that one of the finest gentlemen you could imagine came to Athens back when I was in school and ‘righted the ship’. I’ve thanked Joel Eaves in my prayers more than once over the years for restoring Georgia’s athletic respectability and, most of all, for bringing a young, freshman/quarterbacks coach to Athens – and the rest is history. So I haven’t had a genuinely ‘hateful’ spot in my heart for Auburn for as long as I can remember – oh maybe a couple of years while Tuberville was there, but not many…and as far as I’m concerned the jury’s still out on Coach Cheez-it…we’ll see.
For those that are singing the praises of young Mr. Newton – and well you should – and are saying that he ‘hasn’t done anything wrong’, just remember, if he hadn’t done anything wrong he’d be in his final year at Florida and Auburn would be somewhere in the middle of the SEC West about now. I’m not playing this weekend but I do know that the secret to bringing Newton down is the same way they brought Herschel down – take his pins out from under him – oh yeah, there is one other way, offer him a lap-top for ten cents on the dollar – sorry, that was a cheap shot, but I’ve got to say that Auburn, regardless,, rationalized their way into recruiting Cam after he had demonstrated some rather ‘less than outstanding’ character traits – kinda like Ole Miss did with the lap-top stealing QB from out West some place – what is it about lap-tops with these kids, anyway? So enjoy your time with Newton Auburn. It’ll be over at the end of this season – you’re just a ‘means to an end’…then again, as he and the rest of the quality football players have figured out, so are they – for the schools that is.

dawggie, as a UGA fan you speak from such a high place of moral character. Your comments sound more like jealousy than anything else.
Cam Newton was punished for the laptop incident at Florida, he left the school. What happens at UGA?
DUI… suspended for 1 practice.
Drugs…you loose half of your fro-yo privileges for the week.
A Coach giving a 20 year old the “choke” sign…meh, no punishment since the gesture didn’t work.

I would like to thank the AU fans that are on this post. First class, honestly. I am appreciative of how you represent your school and pride. I wish UGA had more fans like that. As to the game. It is going to be a shoot out if Cam is on point, but our recievers are going to light up AU secondary also. I think both teams will score 40 or better. If we don’t pull an upset, good luck to AU and I hope you represent the SEC well in the NCG. Go Dawgs!!!

Dawg fans relax, I just got through visiting my favorite voodoo preistess just outside of Baton Rouge, and after shaking a few bones, and some crazy thing she did with chicken blood and Bourbon she assured me a UGA victory. AND she gave me a Cam Newton voodoo doll just in case. Between the Tennessee game, Bama last week, the UGA game this week, and up coming meetings between us and Arkansas and Aub/Bama, it’s cost me a pretty penny but I figure I’ll make it on the back end with my bonus money for winning the SEC against SC in a few weeks!

knows Caleb Blackmailer King has less character then then anyone who will be suiting up in Jordan Hare Stadium on Sat, oh and speaking of thiefs was that Alec Oglescooter who just ran past me with the cops chasing him.

Holla. I Just wanted to say there are two big differences between me and 2010.
1. Auburn has replaced Brandon Cox with Cam Newton (I hope I dont need to expound on the difference here.)
2. Georgia does not have Matt Stafford. No offense to Aaron Murray but on the biggest stage (UF Game) he nutted up. I just wonder how he reacts when there is 87,451 fans against him.

I realize this is primarily a Georgia blog – but it’s public – so here are my two cents worth:
You Georgia fans are smoking crack if you think UGA is going to beat Auburn.
Aubrn in 10-0 – this Saturday, Auburn is playing
– to CLINCH the SEC WEST TITLE
– an UNDEFEATED season
– HEISMAN publicity
– BCS ranking
So look for Auburn to keep the gas pedal mashed the entire game – they need to score a lot of points just to keep up with the BCS.
Auburn has shown the can and will win the Big games – and the close games.
UGA – is 5-5
UGA has not won a BIG game all year – and if the game was close – UGA has choked.
UGA lost to Colorodo – probably the worst Big12 team this year.
I do not care about history in this year’s game. UGA ’s best effort all year was the second half againt Florida – even then, they made enough mistakes and was just not good enough to beat the Gators.
Also – look how the Gator QB shredded UGA’s defense running – expect even more out of Cam Newton.
This game has second half blow out written all over it.
Does UGA have a chance? sure – Cam could get hurt.
Will UGA win Staurday – NO WAY
Top of the SEC vs a team that could not beat mediocre and poor B12 teams 2 years in a row.

I’m an UGA fan, but I’m not delusional. Auburn’s O will crush UGA’s defense and Auburn’s stud DL lineman (whose name excapes me) will put enough pressure on AM, resulting in some sacks and likely a few interceptions.

It’s like covering a Kobe Bryant. You know Newton will get his 120 yards a game. Just do not let #5,23 AND 27 all have big games. Let Newton move the ball from 20 to 20 and then try and contain him. Easier said than done, but sanely thinking this UGA defense will shut him down is foolish.

First, I have tremendous respect for Auburn, the University, their Alumni and fans. Over-all they are a class group and just the mere fact that most of them have to live in the same state in Alabama fans garners sympathy (win or lose). Was also watching Auburn’s recruiting, so while I’m surprised they are undefeated, I’m not surprised that they have a very good football team. Have not felt that Georgia would upset any team and like most of my fellow Dawgs will believe they can beat Florida when they do it.
With that said, I believe that Georgia has a good chance of winning this game. Auburn is a very good football team, but their defense (like ours) tends to give up the big play. And say what you want about Georgia, since getting Green back, they have averaged around forty points again. Also realize that alot of those points came against weaker opposition, but so did Auburn’s. And remember, Georgia put 30 up against Florida with four turn overs. The ball has pretty much bounced Auburn’s way this year, while no the case for Georgia. It’s due to ‘flip’.
Georgia 42 Auburn 38 in a great game.

Everyone is expecting 45-44 or something like that.
I am expecting both defenses to play better than expected.
I’m not saying it will be 14-10 but 28-24 or something like that won’t surprise me.
Call it nerves, familiarity or whatever I just don’t see 80+ points being scored.
