What Mark Richt had to say after win over Idaho State

Opening comments:

“Good to have a victory. Good to be 5-5 at this point. And we got a chance to play a couple of great football teams [the next two games]. We start out with Auburn and are looking forward to that. I know Auburn is one of the best teams in the country, so we’re looking forward to that opportunity next week.

“But today was a day I thought our defense and special teams kind of sparked our offense. I thought we were a little bit shaky in the beginning throwing and catching, but once [Aaron] Murray settled down and started hitting his target, everything started to work offensively too. Just a good team victory. I’m glad we got a lot of young guys opportunities to play, and we had a couple of older guys who hadn’t gotten a chance to play much in their careers get in there too. It’s fun to give those guys that opportunity. It means a lot to them. I’m very happy for those guys to get a chance to play and play well.”

On the three interceptions by Georgia defensive backs, including two returned for touchdowns:

“That really sparked us as a team. In that first quarter with a couple of field goals, there’s nothing wrong with that, but we feel like we could have gotten at least one touchdown on the board in the first quarter offensively. But it kind of took the defense to show the way a little bit and just spark the team. And after that, I thought the offense began to play real well. Once we got into the massive substitutions, we started punting again. But the defense definitely sparked us.”

On freshman Alec Ogletree’s first start at safety:

“When he’s been in there, he’s made plays. And he makes plays in practice. He’s a very special player, physically. He’s big; he’s strong; he’s fast. All the things that people thought about him in high school, he is that and more. He just needs the experience, so we want to continue to get him more experience and we felt like now was the time to give him a chance [to start] and see how he responds to it. … From what I saw, he did well. I don’t know if there was a lot of opportunities to make plays or make hits. A lot of their run game didn’t get past the initial wave, and not many balls got thrown downfield either. It was more quick slants and quick outs and things of that nature, so I don’t know how many opportunities he had to really make plays. But it looked like he was getting lined up right.”

Asked who Auburn quarterback Cam Newton reminds him of:

“Oh, wow. Probably a guy like Vince Young in that he’s a big man who can run and throw extremely well and also [is] playing on a football team and in a system that would allow him to be ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the country. I don’t think there’s any doubt Vince Young elevated Texas, and I think the same is going on with Newton.”

On wide receiver Kris Durham’s status for Auburn after missing the Idaho State game with bruised lung:

“We hope Durham will be back. We do expect him to be back.”

Thanks DBoy Jones. I didn’t watch the game, so I hear Ogletree started a Safety I was so hoping it was to replace Rambo. That hit last year against Auburn changed that kid and the way he plays football. Not aggressive and definitely not very smart play coming from him this year. He doesn’t tackle or even attempt to tackle and he is constantly out of position! In short HE SUCKS!!!

You are an idiot! Should Saban be fired now? How about Brown at Texas? I will e-mail Adams to tell him what he already knows… Richt does an excellent job representing our University and is an excellent head coach. Football does not always go your way and you need to stop crying.

I spent 15 minutes writing a passioned, well-reasoned argument for why people need to shut-up and give Mark Richt the benefit of the doubt through at least 2012. Then I pressed “submit” and the damn thing dissappearted into the ether.

Allow me to summarize: stop parsing every damn word Richt says to find a a reason to fire him. He didn’t say he was happy with 5-5.

That this team didn’t quit this season, even with THREE last-minute, heart-breaking losses. That says a LOT about coaching. We were one play away from the MNC game in 2007. Georgia did as much in 2007 to get to that game in 2002 and 2007 as LSU in 2007, and Florida in 2006 and 2008. You don’t fire a man for catching an unlucky break.

We demanded change last season and we got it. We payed lip-service then to giving CTG time to get his players. Let’s honor our end of the bargain.

If I’m wrong, we’ll get the right man in 2013. No one will blame us.

Nobody is picking apart or parsing his words. You should lay off the kool-aid. “Good to have a victory. Good to be 5-5 at this point.” is his words verbatim. While you are foaming at the mouth and beating 0ff on the victory yesterday please, remember that was Ida St. Also, keep in mind we couldn’t beat one of the worse teams (besides us) in the SEC last week.

Hey should be fun watching the Auburn /Georgia game. Gotta stop the run and not allow Newton to get out on the corners. But as of yet no one has stopped him. Hopefully we can shut down their run n make them pass the ball. Be great to beat Auburn but if we dont then i can understand why their undefeated.
Cant wait til you play us at the end of the season though. We’re also better than our record indicates but i think we’ll run on you like we did last year. Ga. Tech 31 Ga. 20. If you beat Auburn this weekend it’ll be by luck or turnovers and if you lose it’ll be because of Newton being too much for Georgia to stop or by turn overs AGAIN.
Cause Dawg Fans are up n down on their team. Cant decide if you want Mark Richt gone, Mike Bobo gone and a new mascot.
Love to see Richt gone and his clonies. Tired of losing to Georgia. Maybe you can get back Ray Goff to coach.
Honestly i think Richt is the best coach Georgia’s ever had there but ever since you guys won the title you have been spoiled to that and expect Georgia to win the title year after year.
You are lucky to have a 10 win season year end n out. But 10’s not enough for you ppl , gotta have it all. (Greed)
Hopefully after Richt is gone you will have to go through 5-7 years of mediocrity and we’ll get better and blow you out with a 10 year winning streak and get all your recruits.

Realdense58,

Um, things ain’t quite that rosey. The Dawgs did win 10 games in ‘08 (with about 7 NFL players, including #1 and #10 in the draft), but lost our three biggest games, two by blowout. We won 8 out of 13 games last season, and may win 5 out of 12 this season. We could win 7 of 12, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

UGA hasn’t won the SEC East in 5 years now. We have lost 11 of our past 25 games.

Saban yeah but in a cpl yrs Alabama’s name will come up through illegal violations on recruiting and get sanctions as Auburn did few years back. Florida the same way cause Meyer will have so much pressure to win their but then again maybe he’ll go to Notre Dame next year.
Florida is about to suffer down years because they have lost probably one of the best OB’s in college football history.
All big name colleges are down this year, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Georgia Tech and the likes that are normally in the top 10.
Every #1 team has virtually lost and here comes the musical chairs. Imagine how those fans feel after winning all those games then to experience something like this.
Ga. Tech fans are complacent with winning the ACC Title and beating up on Georgia every year.
Georgia Fans say beat Tennessee, beat S. Carolina, beat Auburn, beat LSU, beat Florida every year you expect that and when you dont get your way you stand in the corner pouting bout it because daddy didnt get you what you wanted.
Your not happy with the lolly pop…………you want the whole damn box.
We’re happy just to win the ACC or go to a bowl game and beat Georgia. We are more than happy to add to your mis fortunes and dilemma and hear you whine after a defeat. Tech fans are more dedicated to our alumni and coaches than you and a lot more patient than “fair weather fans”.
We are all sitting here laughing cause this georgia coach had 1 bad year and you want him fired but dont know who can replace him. “Uh oh now we’ve fired him and dont know what to do next”. Morons!

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

I’ve spotted another coaching weakness. Brian McClendon… OMG dude, when are you going to tell our backs to stop running up the OL’s hind quarters? They not seeing the holes 40% of the time and making the wrong cuts 50% of the time. Pathetic.

Earth to Cville, or whatever your handle is… Vance Cuff gave up a TD again and generally can NOT play the position, which is why he thankfully was replaced. Glad he got the pick 6, but it doesn’t change anything… he still sucks!

How can anyone support a program like Georgia Tech’s? Over the last 40 years your program has sucked so badly all the trees in Alabama are all leaning over to the East. Your stadium is a joke, your student body is comprised mostly of Jihadists from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and you consistently have players that can not count to FOUR. Georgia can be 1-9 and Tech can be undefeated and we’d still beat you. Why? Because Tech plays a High School style of football in a doormat conference.

Tech female students all have frontal packages and your alumnus are working for Georgia grads, because they have protractors sticking out of their pocket protectors and can’t think outside the box. You may not like Mark Richt, but you like Paul Johnson even less. When you nerds come to Sanford stadium get ready for your annual beat down. WE OWN YOU!

Hey DawgByte

November 7th, 2010
11:28 am

Hey, DawgByte: Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against thug-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Secondly, we are 4 plays away from being 9-1, like it or not, just 4 plays from incredibly good! Hey let’s all go out and get Texas’s DC now eh? They’re not even going to get invited to Birmingham this year it looks like as they won’t even be bowl eligible and oh yeah Kirby looked good yesterday as well as the two worst QB’s in the NCAA lit UAT up big time! Against Idaho St anyone should shine. They actually played tough defense and give them a lot of credit to holding the dawgs to 2 FG’s in 1st qtr. Dawgs looked hung over in start of the game until the defense got the picks and Murray settled down. He’s a good qb and hopefully he’ll be a great one but I still think Mettenberger was the better of the 2. Richt was wrong to let him go and its going to come back and bite him in the rear when Mett signs w/Bama next season.

No one should be glad to be 5-5 regardless. AU will be the best team GA will play this season. I have no faith in Grantham’s defensive scheme and he’s not changed it or learned from the 5 losses that if you don’t stack the line against a running team you’re going to lose. Whereas, AU defense is going to be relentless and Murray will be running for his life. It’ll be a miracle if GA wins and all the breaks will have to be in GA’s favor for it to happen.

Texas is 4-5, and their defense has been just as bad as their offense. Guess who Texas’s defense coordinator is? Oh yea, Georgia fan’s boy Will Muschamp! You want to a hire a guy who is having a ton problems trying to control his defense? Just because Will Muschamp yells and gets fired up, doesn’t mean he is a good coach. You’ve have got to show some passion. Are you sure you want to be the Coach at Georgia? I still believe in your abilities as a coach but at Georgia ?

There was a time Georgia was feared in the SEC and Nationally. Georgia nevered settled for being medicore. We have lost that “it” and the mystic seems to be gone.

I am asking as a 39 plus year fan of Georgia football and respect what you did early on at Georgia. Is it time to move on or can this situation Georgia finds itself be corrected?

What can be done aboua defense that has consistenly allowed long back-braking running plays and pass completions on them?

We need the “fear” for playing Georgia back, and say, next year, would be nice.
