Grantham regrets choke sign: ‘Sometimes you get caught up in heat of moment’

(Updated 7:15 p.m.)

ATHENS – Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, caught on camera making a choking gesture toward Florida’s kicker near the end of last Saturday’s game, expressed regret about the incident Tuesday.

“As a competitor, sometimes you get caught up in the heat of the moment,” Grantham said. “I wish the situation hadn’t happened.

“It was a tough, hard-fought game. They won it, and I’m ready to move forward and finish out the year strong.”

Grantham said he has talked with Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity and coach Mark Richt about the incident, “and we’re ready to move forward.”

Asked if he feels that he owes an apology to the Florida kicker, Chas Henry, Grantham said: “I’ve kind of basically said what I’m going to say.”

Earlier Tuesday, at his weekly news conference, Richt also addressed the Grantham controversy.

“I’m aware of it, and I would just say that emotions run high,” Richt said. “People do things they probably wish they didn’t do. I think that was what was being communicated. I don’t think he’s necessarily proud of it. We’re just going to learn from it and move on.”

A screen shot and video from Florida sports cable network Sun Sports showed Grantham making a choke sign –  grabbing his neck with his right hand several times — before Henry attempted a 37-yard field goal in overtime.

Henry, a Dallas, Ga., native, made the kick to give Florida a 34-31 victory.

In an interview on CBS after the game, Henry said: “Some of [Georgia's] coaches on the sideline were over there giving me a little grief, saying I was going to choke.”

Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, asked about the controversy Tuesday, said he hadn’t seen the video but had heard about the matter.

Grantham “was probably just like the rest of us, just hoping [Henry] missed the kick,” Murray said. “I don’t think it’s anything too much to get worked up about. It’s not like he charged the field at the kicker and tried to do something to him. . . . I think people are trying to make too big a deal about it.”

McGarity discussed the matter with SEC commissioner Mike Slive, according to UGA spokesman Claude Felton.  “To the best of our knowledge,” Felton said, “the SEC is not pursuing anything on that.”

Durham likely out

Georgia wide receiver Kris Durham likely will be sidelined for Saturday’s game against Idaho State but should be available for the Nov. 13 game at Auburn, Richt said.

Durham suffered a bruised lung as a result of a fierce hit on a second-quarter catch against Florida. He returned to the game in the third quarter.

“I was a little upset because at first [doctors and trainers] told me I wasn’t going to be able to go back in,” Durham said Tuesday. “I mean, I wasn’t hurting. Well, yeah, I was a little sore, but that’s nothing.

“The only thing that really scared them was when I started kind of coughing up a little blood. But I felt fine. I could take deep breaths. They listened to my lungs and to my heart and took some vitals. I felt like I could play, so they allowed me back in. … I was very, very grateful for that because it was my last go-round against the Gators.”

Commings’ misplay

Among the Georgia players second-guessing themselves for misplays against Florida: cornerback Sanders Commings, who attempted to scoop and run with a first-quarter Florida fumble inside the Gators’ 10-yard line.

“I wish I would have just fallen on the ball now,” Commings said Tuesday. “It would have given the offense great field position to score, but I guess all I can do now is learn from it.”

Richt said the rule of thumb is to simply jump on the fumble “if there are bodies around” or to scoop and run with it “if you’re out in space.” He said Georgia twice Saturday tried to scoop-and-run with fumbles that should have been jumped on.

The Gators recovered the fumble that eluded Commings. It proved to be the first play of a 91-yard drive to the game’s first touchdown.

I agree with Coach Richt, and as a Gator, I do not think what Coach Grantham did was a big deal. The game was very emotional with tensions high on both sides during the overtime. Hopefully both the Gators and Dawgs will win the rest of their games to show everyone that both teams are good.

At least your HC has the intestinal fortitude to admit that was what happened unlike so many of you that were trying to say he was signaling in a play or some other BS.

Gator Mike & Beast, thanks. I would of thought the same if any UF coach had done it. At least Coach Grantham was showing some emotion other than sitting on the bench down by 30 in the 4th qtr like we have been the past few years. I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, Grantham’s obscenities, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

It’s a coach’s responsibilty to coach his players, not gesture to or communicate with any members of the opposing team.

I think it’s interesting that not only does the UGA football program have more than 10 players arrested this year, but the program apparently can’t keep it’s coaches focused on COACHING either.

Maybe the coaches need to learn to “Finish the drill” too!

This is crazy to make anything of this. The kicker was a 21 year old college player . This isn’t PEE WEE football. I will admit that it was the classiest move on Grantham’s part but it’s no big deal and doesn’t deserve any press time. As I have stated before, Myers calling timeout last year at the end of the game was a million times worst .

Well whoop-tee-freakin’-doo… Rainey threatened to kill a woman and the Corch let him play, but you “Holier than Thou” Dawgs keep acting like Richt runs a prison dorm because our guys get caught drinking or a DC makes an offending hand gesture. Down in Florida they could care less about what kind of hypocrite coach they have or what kind of heinous acts their players commit as long as they WIN. Again, discipline is what happens AFTER a player gets into trouble. At Georgia we rid ourselves of top talent that really screws up – they do the same at Florida, only down there they will get reinstated when Meyer’s offense begins to sputter. The loss last Saturday can be blamed on the “moral soapbox” Georgia fans like to stand on as much as the player’s execution. Montez Robinson could have really helped out with our pass rush this year but, unlike Florida our stance on discipline doesn’t change from week to week based on who we are playing. We pay a price on the field for our fans so-called “morality” so all you hypocrites need to either get behind our “thug” players or go root for a team like Vandy. The Commies of Nashville never get arrested so I would recommend throwing all your Bible-thumping support behind them since you fools want to play for the afterlife instead of playing football. In closing, after the disgusting display put on by Meyer Saturday, no one should EVER question the disciplinary practices Coach Richt implements at Georgia. GO DAWGS!!!

Oh for petes sake….GROW UP…The kicker is 19 or 20 not freeking 4. If this hurt his widdle feewins then he should try out for ballet. The kicker didnt even make a big deal out of it. Schultz did.

There is no comparison to this and Muttenberger assaulting a young lady or the GAYTURD threatening to kill his girlfriend. There is no double standard in play. And NO I would NOT be talking differently if it was a Gator coach. I was pretty ticked off when they tried gouging out our eyes though or calling timeout when they had a huge lead. That was classless thuggery. (and the celebration which Richt apologized for repeatedly is not equivalent) This incident is nothing. What a bunch of girls.

Hard to imagine a Vince Dooley, or a Bear Bryant, or a Bobby Dodd, or even CMR’s Mentor Bobby Bowden, pulling out a choke sign the way CTG did.

CMR’s casual attitude about it will speak volumes to the players. So now we have a Coach displaying that kind of behavior, and it’s no big deal to CMR, huh?

Now that the Coach gets a free pass to show no class at all, something tells me that we only THINK we have seen THUG behavior from our players.

Clearly it’s something he wishes he would not have done (or maybe just wishes he would not have got caught) but regardless, just add it to the list of slights (or perceived slights) that both sides use to claim the other are classless, spineless or (insert your favorite adjective here).

It is another brick in the wall that builds a great rivalry where both sides really don’t care for each other and find new and different was to express it.

In the CBS telecast view of this, it is pretty funny to watch the two guys standing sort of behind and next to him (one player and one student manager). They are watching him and listening to him and have a look of disbelief on their faces like “is he really doing that”.

I am typically the last person to defend a UGA player or coach but what’s the big deal? He wanted the UF kicker to miss the kick. So did every other UGA fan/coach/player. So what? Football is too barbaric.

It should be reduced to coed flag football to ensure no one gets hurt and everyone is represented equally.

While they’re at it, there should be no cursing allowed on the sideline.

If anyone is caught cursing, the ref must force that player/coach/cheerleader to sit in their locker for 5 min. after the offender apologizes over the PA systems to the entire stadium and TV viewing audience.

Funny how Georgia coaches do so much in Jacksonville to regret later. Just a few years ago, Richt instructed his entire team to run onto the field illegally and draw a penalty, saying that he would “be disappointed if they didn’t”. Now Grantham gives a childish choke sign. It sure looks like the Florida game brings out the immaturity of UGA coaches. The UGA AD needs to step in and issue a little disciplinary action. An asistant coach grabbing his own throat, from the sideline, is no more worthy of attention than a head coach waiting until the snap of a potential field goal (a la Myer vs LSU in ‘07) to call time out. Both are intended to unnerve the kicker.

If Richt doesn’t like Grantham’s fire, he shoulda hired a DC that looks like he doesn’t have a pulse.

does anyone really want to win anymore games this year and risk the fact that the administration will prolong this miserable situation letting Richt give it one more try. I am not one to give up but honestly if it means we get started on the rebuilding process sooner, then I will be glad to sacrifice the rest of this year. Mediocrity is a free fall, the closer to the bottom you are the sooner you can start climbing to the top again. We all torched Richt for hanging on to Willie too long, so doesn’t Richt deserve the same pressure on his employment status at Georgia? I have no personal bias against Richt, he seems like a really good human being, and was a good coordinator, but when it comes to running what should be top 5 team every year based on recruiting, facilities, fan base and other factors, but is more like a I AA program instead, I say its time to change.

How many times do coaches call a timeout before a field goal attempt? Isn’t the point to make the kicker think about it and possibly miss the kick or said another way “choke”? It’s done all the time. So what, who cares what Grantham did. As a UGA fan, if Urban Myer did it to Blair Walsh, I could care less and I would think Walsh would not be affected by it other than being motivated by it. If that gesture would make a kicker miss a field goal, then he doesn’t need to be the kicker for a college program (high school for that matter).

What the hell. We lost. congrats Florida. They out coached us ( see their offensive changes if you think otherwise), out played us ( see our 4 turnovers), and played to win, except hoping to win like Georgia does this year.
Time to move on. Coach G. grabbed his throat. Why the hell would the kicker look that way anyway, he was I am sure focused on hitting the kick ( his results on the kick would indicate that as well).

Personally hope Florida beats S carolina and goes to the championship game. As a Georgia fan I can say that.

AD needs to evaluate Georgia program top to bottom. An frankly our defense seems to be responding better to its coaching then the offense, which sputters and spurts with TDs one minute and turnovers the next.

While we are at it, UGA will expect its fans and all school personnel to practice this same rule during basketball events on campus. We will no longer accept yelling, shaking pom-pom’s, waving of the arms or anything of a distracting nature during free throws or any other time during play.

Good game to Florida. Hard fought by both teams.

The only ones that seem to be bothered by this are the writers and fans who support GT.

I don’t know what it is with GT. They are more concerned with what GA is doing than their own team.

I was watching the GA/CO game at a local sports bar and as GT was making a come back on Wake Forest, the GT fans didn’t even pay attention to the GT comeback. They were too busy cheering for Colorado.

Too funny!

I don’t know about Grantham but I routinely go after refs in my kid’s pee wee league. I sent threatening texts to one guy and tackled another and gouged him in the eyes but I don’t use the “choke” sign, I just wait until after the game and choke him on the way to the car.

Some of you on this thread are so stupid it is pitiful. First of all, the Meyer timeouts weren’t last year…get a clue. They were 2 years ago. And they were in direct response to the orchestrated celebration penalty from the year before….so UGA coaching started it all. Only difference is calling timeouts is legal and not a penalty and what UGA did was not. And for those mentioning the eye-gouge, well that was national news and the player got suspended. What is happening to Grantham for breaking the NCAA Code of Ethics (several items relate specifically to precisely what he did)?

Dawg 75-76 and Mtn Dawg are as clueless as humans come. If Grantham was my coach I would be totally embarrassed. And trying to justify bad behavior by citing poor behavior of others is a loser’s national anthem.

To all of you on Chris Rainey. He came from a very bad childhood and at one time was homeless. He has never been in any kind of trouble and is a good kid thats had a bad life. He sent a disturbing text to his girlfriend, “time to die”, which is a saying often used in the violent neighborhood he came from. No excuse and totally unacceptable, No one believes he had intentions of actually hurting anyone, but in his anger handled the situation as bad as anyone could. He did not play for 5 games. Kicking this kid from the team and chances of a degree or future NFL would not have been the right thing to do.

It makes for great fodder though for Gator haters, just as I know many Gator fans have much to say on UGA’s arrests. Bottom line when facts came out, the police investigated and charged him with a misdameanor and his girlfriend refused to press charges, it was a friend of hers that called the police. I don’t think the police gave him a free ride, the facts didn’t warrant labeling him as a violent abuser.

I’m not a GT fan, so don’t accuse me of being one after you read my post. However, I cannot believe the number of UGA fans on this site who are/were so ready to crucify others for having the audacity to even PLAY a player (Rainey), and then want to give Grantham a hall pass on cursing at an opposing player and making a very un-sportsmanlike gesture. I’ve heard UGA fans say “it’s no big deal,” or “let’s move on,” and so on. Huh?

Before 17 people respond to this post and say that what Grantham did isn’t even close to what Rainey did, please don’t. That’s is absolutely not the point. What Rainey did was wrong, but so is what Grantham did. For UGA fans to not take the same incredibly strong and vocal stance against Grantham for a being a jackA is unconscionable.

Come on, watch a game on Tivo and slow motion it. You will see kicks, elbows and stomps. Spikes got caught and suspended as he should of, but spare me that your team is innocent. All of them do it in the pile, it’s common knowledge.

Richt’s Butt Cut….

Your pathetick post sums up what is wrong with college football. Everybody wants their team to “win at all cost.” There is no sportsmanship, no loyalty to coaches who have given everything they have to the school, no pride, no class, and certainly no desire to win the right way. It’s just all about wins….and it’s sad.

I am a huge Oklahoma fan, and I certainly have gone through my share of tough times (the end of the Switzer era). However, I would rather have a extra loss on my schedule and be proud of my school for running a clean program and doing things the right way, than to wind up being a classless thug filled football team that is an embarrasment to your state.

Outcoached? Outplayed? It was a tie at the end of regulation play. I guess UF was outcoached and outplayed too. The Gayturds just happened to get the lucky break (int.) and the field goal. That game could’ve (and should’ve, except for the turnovers) gone the other way.
——————————————————-
Yes out coached because the Gators don’t have a very good team this year, lost 9 players to the NFL and no kicker. Meyer found a way to come up with some different plays, use 3 quarterbacks and change up our scheme after losing 3 in a row. Richt stayed the course with no new plays, credit to the UGA team for staying in it despite it.

UGA has had 4 turnovers in the last 3 meetings, it isn’t luck, its capitalizing on what talent you have. Florida got the ball on the 25 yard line just the same as UGA and managed to score a field goal without our kicker in the game. We sure are lucky alright……to have Meyer as a coach.

When you lose early the polls don’t care…vs..losing late in the season….

UGA fans don’t have to fret until the last weekend in October..to see if we can beat Florida…

Play the game in the Georgia Dome…weather..heat ..not a factor….split the tickets….like you do for SEC game….

I am sick of going thru the season and waiting for UGA to lose to Florida in October…let’s get the pain behind us….

Now…if we had a football program that was well managed and coached that could beat the Gators…maybe every other year…then..I would not be proposing this idea….

All UGA fans…we should start a petition to move the game to the first weekend in September….

I have to differ. Grantham’s move was what it was. UF fans do not like it, I think ok. To me, the kicker shut5 him up and that is what its all about. As fo Rainey- that tool threatened a woman. Pretty lame and for Urban to sell his soul to avoid a 4th loss in a row shows lack of stones. I really do not care who wins the game , Urban just likes to give the impression that he does it better than everyone else. Not in this case. P.S. The Ole Ball Coach would not hsve played Rainey.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to offer nationally competitive intercollegiate athletic programs which reflect the interests of our students and faculty, the Southeastern Conference, and the people of Georgia and of the nation who support our activities. These programs provide a worthwhile experience for our student-athletes by teaching them the basic principles of amateur competition, competitive integrity, fair play, and good sportsmanship.

The UGA Athletic Association is committed to the principle of providing equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. These programs and this principle are a source of enthusiasm and loyalty; they enliven and enrich the life of our academic community; they keep our graduates in touch with the University long after they leave campus; they serve as a common rallying point for people of all ages and backgrounds; and they reinforce the University’s commitment to diversity.

We seek to enhance the academic endeavors of the University, by helping through our success to attract both promising students and the assistance of private philanthropy, and by providing direct financial support.

Above all, we recognize that the University’s obligation to the state of Georgia, and to the parents everywhere who send us their sons and daughters, is to provide our students with a level of quality education which leads to recognized academic achievement, contributing to their social development and preparing them for meaningful lives and careers. We are committed to the proposition that academic achievement is not and should not be a gift. Rather, it is a challenge that must be met by the individual students, as well as the University.

Accordingly, all our efforts are guided by certain values we believe essential to the fulfillment of this task:

INTEGRITY

By their very nature, athletics inevitably involve character development; for this reason, especially, we must conduct ourselves with utmost integrity. All our programs, and the activities on our behalf by alumni and friends, must be consistent with the policies of the University and the athletic bodies which govern us. We are to be at all times honest and forthright in our dealings with each other, the public, and the media.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our primary purpose is to promote the personal growth and physical well being of our student athletes, to guide them to become in life the best they can be. It is our abiding goal to foster the ideals, standards, and value systems which will enable them to grow spiritually, emotionally and intellectually, and to attain degrees in their chosen fields of endeavor.

TEAMWORK

If there is one concept that drives us, it is our dedication to winning in the broadest possible sense. We compete to win—as individuals, as team members, and as representatives of this great University. We clearly understand that the success of any one person is always the result of dedicated effort on the part of many people. So, while we are quick to recognize individual performance, we are even quicker to celebrate achievements of the team.

EXCELLENCE

Dedication to excellence should distinguish our efforts in every sport in which we compete and should be reflected in the performance of all our teams and in the fiscal soundness of our programs. Individually and collectively, we strive always to give our all and thereby realize our best possibilities.

LEADERSHIP

Our goal is to maintain a model athletic program which other colleges and universities may wish to emulate. Beyond this, we shall continue to pioneer and promote policies which will enhance the quality of intercollegiate athletics throughout America.

Dedication to the personal development of our student athletes, unfailing integrity and excellence in our programs, teamwork, and determination to play a leadership role nationally…these are the values which underlie our endeavors and the standards by which we measure ourselves.

Again, I don’t care about the choke sign, whatever…, just tired of the non-apology “apologies” with the “lets move on” statements that seem so common now. Great game to watch as a fan and really, given GA vs FLA, a pretty clean, sportsman-like game overall.

Florida and Georgia have both had many arrests of their athletes that are still on the team. It is stupid for either side to go there, both schools have had embarrassments from players.

The coaches however is a different story. Your AD shamelessly caught with his “panties” exposed, your coach laughing as the players run on field and dance, and now an assistant taunting a 20 something year old on the field. Your coaches response? “People do things they wish they didn’t do.”

The only bump Meyer had was yelling at a reporter for an article on one of his players, unprofessional yes, but an exchange between 2 adults on Meyer’s field after practice, and he APOLOGIZED to the reporter face to face and made a public statement of apology.

It’s no so much the adversity, but how you handle it. It’s clear there is a different culture on the UGA staff than UF’s. Nuff said.

Hey, why do we care what is going on in UF’s house when ours is an absolute mess and crumbling. This isn’t about being relative in our behavior, this is about being the best team possible.

A 44 year old mans actions on the field vs a students text to his girlfriend no matter how the law views are not equal in the sense that a kid will make mistakes, 44 year old prima donna football coach acting like that is inexcusable. We’ve all played football, we all know those immature coaches that are the part-time little league baseball coaches that go ballistic on an 8 year old. That’s what we have here.

Fire that ahole and everyone that hired him. Just because you talk slow and act slow, like Richt does, is in no way showing that you are in control over anything.

Yet another nation-wide embarassment for the State of Georgia, compliments of (as usual) UGA and their spineless head coach. Do you all really have ANY idea how this kind of garbage reflects on the whole state in the eyes of the rest of the country? I travel constantly, and the (mis)behavior of this team and administration has become a running joke! No one in their right mind would send their child to Athens anymore. UGA used to be viewed with great respect around the nation (and no, I DON’T mean just the thug football team!), but now it is seen as a total joke academically (The whole #1 party school thing is only cool to kids under 18 years old) and athletically (just look at the record over the last 2 or 3 years. ‘Nuf said!). It’s truly sad to see such an esteemed institution sink so low due to it’s own inability to control it’s employees and students.

Truly pathetic. It will take many years to begin to rebuild the schools image/perception. Sad.

As an alum I don’t think I can take anymore of this nonsense. I can let anything go as long as we beat our two main rivals…UF and Tech. 2-8 vs. UF i not good enough despite the great record against Tech. I would trade two losses to the nutjobs on North Ave. for 1 win against the Gators. SICK OF the annual Jax disappointment. Move the bye week. Give this rivalry it’s rightful attention! We can beat Tech with no extra prep work I think.

Go ahead doggies, make all your excuses, oh it was nothing, its football. You dog fans have the audacity to berate and call other teams classless. Look in the mirror you inbred rednecks. Your so called “university” is a digrace with all your arrest over the past 3 years, your former AD, a coach who doesn’t even know what the word discipline means and a president that shows no leadership whatso ever. You recruit low class or character kids because they have 5 stars. You do no homework in this area, and I guess that applies to coaches now also, even though you paid $750,000 for your forth choice. Your whole school is an embarrassment to the state of Georgia, but your fans can’t see it or demand it be cleaned up, which is an indictment on your fan base as a whole. You really do not care what kind of imagine you have as long as you are winning football games. Well you aren’t even doing that very much and you are still the most classless school in the south, sorry the nation. You are a national laughing stock, and your degree is worthless outside of this state where all the other inbred rednecks live. So go ahead and berate other real “schools” that do not have near the problems you guys have, you are the most classless bunch there is, and it would seem that some of your graduates would stand up and demand change, but then we forget who your real fan base is.

Of course UGA backers think this is a “non-issue” (as do most Gators). If it happened on the opposite sideline, however, we’d never hear the end of it. And end up watching the highlight forever. Or listening to the wait ’til next year revenge talk. Or getting all the holier-than-thou lectures. Bottom line = Dawgs, 31 Owners, 34.

Chillymutt – when a team has three turnovers by it’s offense in the first half they are going to give up more points and yards on defense. By the way UGA had just as many yards as Florida – not that it is important.

It just seems to be a little childish for a $750,000 a year man, who’s defense has let the gators score 31 points (with the generous help of the offense) to be doing some kind of choke hold on the sidelines….maybe he should have been encouraging his players to storm the center and block the kick.
Anyway, time to move on and worry about something else.

I’M SURE THIS ACT DID VERY LITTLE TO UPSET THE FLORIDA PLAYER, IN FACT, PROBABLY DID MORE TO MAKE HIM EVEN MORE DETERMINE TO MAKE THE KICK. THE PROBLEM IS THE COACH SHOULD HAVE BEEN USING ALL OF HIS FOCUS ON TRYING TO CALL A PLAY THAT WOULD GIVE THE DAWGS A CHANCE TO PUT MORE PRESSURE ON THE KICKER. COACH R GET MORE CREDIT THAN ANY COACH IN THE SEC FOR BEING A GOOD CHRISTIAN MAN. I THINK HE IS BUT YET THE QUESTIONS REMAINS, WHY DOES THIS NOT REFLECT IN HIS TEAM ACTIONS ON AND OFF THE FIELD? Even without the Grantham incident, I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

What’s the big deal? This isn’t golf. Last I checked, football was classified as a contact/collision sport and decidedly not gentlemanly.

Didn’t UGA deploy the last-second time out to “ice” the Gator kicker? What’s that about if not implying “Hey bud! We just gave you the opportunity to chew on the import of your imminent endeavor. And just so you know, it’s our fervent hope you seize up like a Yugo engine that just consumed its last drop of oil.”

Henry was looking at the Dawgs sideline before the kick. What the heck did you want Grantham to do, blow him a kiss – or give him a thumbs up perhaps?

So some nimrod from a two-bit Florida TV station scouring every second of game/sideline footage found this “outrageous” breach of decorum. And the Gator lunatic fringe is in a tizzy.

More disgusting is that UGA movers and shakers dignified this nonsense and made a spectacle of implying Grantham was reprimanded for his crime against all football humanity.

Mr. new UGA AD, do we hate Florida or not? What happened to your manhood? They used to be just south of your belly, inside your pants. Tell UF to get over it and move on. Or better yet, ignore this tempest in a teapot altogether.

Real cute posts about GT Mr. AJC Moderator/Jeff Schultz. Do you really want to bring up whether any team is relevant or not? Last I looked, GT still has a chance to win their conference (regardless of whether it is down or not) while UGA has been ELIMINATED from what is a very subpar SEC east. Last I looked GT still has a winning record while UGA does not. The only thing irrelevant that I see related to your posts ARE your posts since they are completely off topic – this is a blog about Todd Grantham. I would think that the focus should be on how to solve the many problems at UGA including the PR hit they are taking on Grantham’s childish behavior on the sidelines. Let the folks over at GT worry about their own problems including how to beat UGA even in a down year.

Another example of head coach laughing off the example set by his staff. A leader encourages poor behavior through his own behavior – e.g. telling team to get a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty a couple years ago OR not publicly admonishing the immature actions of his staff. Previous A.D. set the tone and it continues. Richt needs to learn to implement ‘tough love’ on staff and players. He’s letting the pressure of not winning alter his morals. I think he knows what’s right, he’s just blind right now.

Who cares!?! I wish we could put Grantham in the game. Our players lack the fire which was clearly evident in the first half. And for Buck Bulue to be calling out the DC is gutless. I witnessed many times all year where defenders were in a position to make a play and they just didn’t do it. We should have had three easy turnovers gained in ther Fl game. Buck should be questioning the last 3 play calls against Arkansas and Florida. With the game on the line, we call pass, run and pass. Same play calls in both games. I actually think Bobo called a great game. But he seems to have a brain cramp when the pressure is at its greatest. While I’m at it, we need to get a RB coach that was actually a RB.

“I was in the Stadium”, I saw them & the many other situations just like them. UF players instigated a great deal of pushing, hitting, stepping on helmets…. We were baffled at the many missed calls for unsportsmanlike conduct. Ones that were directly in front of refs too.

I’m not hearing anyone cry for apologies from the players for their actions and they were actually dangerous. Oh that’s right, everyone hates the Dawgs on this blog (except for true dawg fans), so no one will say anything. It’s all about a coach showing intensity. No harmful actions, just a simple “I hope you miss this mutha” gesture. Football is football & I love the smack talk on the field, but the other stuff, not so much.

Get us a new coach! NEW BLOOD! NEW Passion! Reason to feel Good Again!

Most of our problems go back to the Florida victory several years ago. We beat them on a day the HEAD COACH called for a team wide “UNSPORTSMAN” Penalty. How can we expect the players to follow the law when the Head Coach violates the rules of his livelihood on purpose????

Buck Bulue gutless? How about Georgia coaching staff immature? It is a requirement there it seems. Remember how hard it was to even find a person who wanted the job of defensive coordinator at Georgia? Maybe there is an atmosphere there that no one wants to address. Bulue does it and he is gutless? I beg to differ, he and Fran T. may be some of the few real adults you have around that program. If they are gutless then that is what Georgia needs more gutless, or better yet we will take both of them any day you have had enough of them. You are a good man stevo. Thanks for responding. To play at the University of Georgia should be a privilege. Lord knows Fran and Buck did their share to make it so, as did my high school friend Billy Payne and hundreds of more. The conduct of their coaches should reflex this as being a special place, for a special few. If you can’t live up to these standards there are five young men for ever position that will come here and take your place. No school in the southeast can do that like Georgia. Tech sure can’t we have to beg to fill a roster. One kid does not make a team, that is not a saying that is a reality. The future of everything good in this state starts in Athens. How they conduct themselves effects not just the University but the whole state. There are actual studies that show a sorry football teams directly effects the enrollment and contributions of the entire institution which in turn effects the economy and health of this state. These are adult jobs being held by anyone involved with the University. They need to lead not follow, and certainly not follow the lead of 18 year olds.

If Commings would have just fallen on that fumble I truly believe the whole game would have been different and we would have won. Or if he would of just deflected that pass near the goal line that he was in perfect position to defend and didn’t. I’m ready for Vance Cuff again and that’s scary in it’s own right.

94 grad…… how about if Rambo could catch a pass thrown directly to him with no UF WR within 10 yards of him…
then again if rennie and jones were here would it be different? let me know when AJ goes pro this year and Demps and Rainey come back and I’ll tell you as long as this keeps happening we won’t blow them out like we should!

4-5 is not even mediocre.

The DC made the gesture while SCREAMING at the kicker that he would “f-ing choke”. No class.
The gesture did not work.
The black helmets did not work.
The “celebration” in the endzone after a touchdown got serious payback.
What other goofy scheme will Richt and company come up with next? How about a new head coach?

Richt saves his job by throwing his DC under the bus only to hire this jerk who helps lead the team to no better than third in the SEC East. Different DC, same result. Maybe it was not the DC. Now Richt will have to thow the OC under the bus and produce the same results before he himself is thrown under the bus for mediocraty and lack of class.

Unfortunate example of poor taste, no class in the coaching staff. Even Pop Warner coaches are held accountable for such poor displays of emotion.

When I first heard of the choke gesture I thought it was something directed towards the Bulldogs defense, because lets face it Georgia was supposed to win this game. We had seen the Gators all year and knew they were very bad this year, yet we went there and choked again.
I wish Grantham had huddled with the Defense on the sideline and coach them up, because God knows they needed as much coaching as possible with regards to tackling.

Good grief, people. Everyone makes a mistake every now and again. Grantham apologized for his inappropriate gesture, and I take the man at his word that he is sincere. I can’t ask for anything more than that under the circumstances. If it becomes a pattern of behavior then the head coach, athletic director or university president can and will take disciplinary action.

As for all of the hyperventilating Dawgs and Gators fans: please just let it go.

Classless act from a classless team. No big deal but actions are louder than words. Just does not leave a good impression on your athletic department. He almost looked demented. Not what I want to see from a once proud organization

Why even bring up the topic. UGA deals with a dozen new image problems every day. I said three years ago they need a PR director but obviously they feel good about themselves. So if you feel good about this team you have a lot of , lets say, self-tolerance.

The kicker would have made that kick with his eyes closed in a wheelchair from 60 yards. Its just UGA karma. After all these years of losses this should be understood. My question is how would UGA fans behave if the dawgs ever won this game. Good grief TN has beaten Vandy 29 years in a row. Just get used to it. Everyone in the SEC has.

St. Richt said he hired Grantham because he is enthustiastic. Liar. He should have said, “I hired Grantham because he is classless and I knew my thug players could relate to him.” If he were on my staff I would fire his butt. A football coach should know better. The sad thing is that all these UGA fans agree with what he did. Stay classy UGA fans! You are an embarrasement to our fine state.

Regrets?! The only regret this coach should have is how BAD his defense has played. You have imbecile UGA fans making excuses for the defense and actually saying that it is getting better. It’s hard to say, but this UGA defense may be worse than our defense…… Well, maybe not that bad…

Grantham really was choking. Somebody grabbed his frilly lace panties and gave him an atomic wedgy.

Y'all have it all wrong about TG

November 4th, 2010
4:11 pm

TG’s gesturing was directed at Aaron Murray after his 42 nd interecption on the day. He choked and we all know it. He was trying over and over to get the ball to Orson Charles ( over rated he is ) and they only connected on one half way decent mis direction pass that ALMOST was picked off.

Murray choked in front of his home state. UGA has to deal with crap like this every year, like Terrence Edward’s DROP from David Green, while wide open at the Gator 35 and headed to the Florida end zone. Wide open like UGA’s Randy McMichael was vs Florida in Eric Zeier’s era and he DROPPED TWO in a row in the end zone from the 6 yd line. Aaron Murray COST us that damend game.

On and on ……………..my alma mater CHOKES.

Luckily, I recall the Florida games in the late 60s and 70s and the 80s, so I am fine. You young uns have to deal with losing but in my era we OWNED THEM. We were just MENTALLY tougher maybe.

Go Dogs.

NORRIS,

Because AJ admitted to CMR that he did sell the jersey while Newton and his family insist that they had no knowledge of any of the allegations of money requests and never received a dime from anyone. Auburn’s also denying any contact with this person so from what is out there right now it looks like an A$$ Hole was trying to extort money from Miss St and they told him to go pound sand. I hope this “agent” is brought under indictment for extortion and sent to prison and his room mate is a Alabama fan. I think we just need to let the investigation play out.
