What Mark Richt had to say after loss to Florida

Opening comments:

“It was a very good game. I’m sure the fans [watching] on TV enjoyed it. The television people probably loved it. It was that kind of game. But it certainly didn’t end the way we wanted it to. I want to give Florida credit. They did a good job of getting prepared and doing the things they needed to do to win the game. I want to give our guys credit, too. I thought they fought valiantly. I don’t think anyone can question their effort or question their competitive spirit. It was just one of those games someone had to lose, and unfortunately it was us. I’m proud of the players and the coaches and our fans and the band and everyone else. It was a great effort by their guys and by ours too. And in the end they won. You’ve got to give their punter Chas Henry credit –- a guy who’s been a punter by trade was kind of thrown into the fire as the field-goal guy and was able to make a big kick.

On Aaron Murray’s play in the first half, when he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble:

“I know this game was very meaningful to him. I don’t think he was approaching it any different. I don’t know if once the thing started he had some different feelings inside of him, but I thought the guy really played pretty well. The first pick –- he threw the ball where it was supposed to go. … [Cornerback Janoris Jenkins] took a chance and made the play. But I can’t sit here and say Murray did anything wrong on that play. The second interception –- I thought the ball was probably catchable. And of course he got hit and fumbled, and he’s got to do a better job of hanging on to that ball.…  The point I’m making is … I don’t think he was making mistakes out of immaturity or because he’s a first-year starter or anything like that. Sometimes those things happen, and you have to decide how you’re going to rebound from it. And he rebounded extremely well. The whole team did. I told the team at halftime, ‘This is one of those games where I can promise you if you treat it like it’s 0-0 and start from scratch again and play hard on both sides of the ball, we’ll get back in this thing and win it.’ And we almost did.”

On the interception Murray threw in overtime:

“… On third down you are trying to get in position to score a touchdown because you know a field goal might not be what it takes. When you are in those situations, you just have to play ball, and they got some pressure and the ball got tipped up in the air and got picked.”

On what he said to the team after the game:

“I talked to them about deciding how they are going to react to this thing. There have been some tough losses this season, no doubt, and we have had some very big disappointments. We were going in the right direction and getting a lot of momentum and actually getting back in the SEC Eastern Division race. A victory here could have put us in a position to be in Atlanta [for the SEC championship game].”

On what now:

“Just keep fighting. Keep grinding. Show up to work. Be a grown man and do your job. And enjoy it. We’ll come back home; we’ll get back to work, play Idaho State, play as hard as we can for the Georgia people; and then we’ll hook it up the next week.”

On bowl eligibility as motivation:

“I’m sure that conversation will come up. What do we have to win, two out of three? I’m sure we’ll be fighting hard for that.”

On how to turn around the Florida series:

“Win a game like this, but we didn’t do it. We’ll be back.”

More reaction to the game:

From UGA locker room: ‘My worst nightmare,’ Murray says of OT interception.

From Florida locker room: ‘I almost burst into tears after the game,’ linebacker says.

Well, who is surprised that TampaGator showed up to rub salt in the wound? It would be nice if all dawg fans would simply ignore him. Somehow, I think I can manage to live without his insults.

This is not a very big game, if it was they would get rid of a coach if they lost 18 of last 21, so it ain’t a big thing. Time for a b-team.

RE: What Mark Richt had to say after loss to Florida

Platitudes, platitudes, platitudes. Just looks like Richt cannot beat the better coaches, even when he’s got the better team. Don’t know how much more evidence the fan base needs before they believe it. Meyer comes into the game with a broken down team with zero confidence and still walks away with the win over Richt.

UGA has a coach that’s a really good man on a personal level. That’s what UGA will have as long as Richt is head coach: a really good man who has some coaching ability, but doesn’t know how to lead his team into and through the big battles. The new AD is making some schedule changes that will ease UGA’s load in the coming years, which will further obfuscate the truth about Mark Richt.

As UGA fans, guess we should just learn to live with and love the fact that UGA’s head football coach is a truly classy guy who is regularly outclassed in competition.

I had the privilege of watching the UGA loss on Saturday next to a table of about ten Dawg fans at a local sports bar. At almost any play there was yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs, even if the play was for a three yard gain. There was cursing loud enough for the whole place to hear, they broke a glass and then got appraisal from other dawg fans for doing it. It was a mess, I cant stand UGA fans.

One can analyse this program all one wants. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Bottom line: UGA is 13-11 last 24 games; CMR is 2-8 vs. UF. TIME FOR A CHANGE.

That was one heck of game. Congradulations gators, There’s something bad wrong with the siutation at Georgia and even 10 year old girls along with 99 percent of the people who watch Georgia play over the last two years, knows what it is. Now the question is, is anything going to be done about it and what will it be. Dawg Fan For Life! Go Dawgs! I got four tickets to the toilet bowl I’m giving away.

CMR sounds like he expected to lose and is congratulating the team on keeping it close. Another Golly Gee moment…we all know CMR is a great guy…I just don’t think he is the right coach for us right now. You can dissect the state of UGA football all you want but to to simplify it; CMR’s life is not just winning football games (like a Saban, or a Meyer, or Spurrier, or others), he has an amazing ministry and does so much to change lives. And he should continue to do that…but we need a coach consumed with winning, and he is not. That’s the difference right there. Plain and Simple…it’s time for a change…

OK Dawg Nation…GG is right…3 and 18 sucks…so what did the Gators need to get back on track???? Just play us (and a bye week of course). This is BS! I have too much work to do to read any more of this BS from delusional Dawg fans…Wake TF up! Do you not have any pride? Is there any competitiveness left in you? We relish in beating Tech…another bad team, from the ACC! Beating a crappy Tech team does not make me feel any better…playing is a BCS game does. And with CME we will never do that.

TampaGator, I have enjoyed your messages. Your first, however, seems to be more of a catharsis than a rational, reasonable analysis. I honestly don’t know or understand why fans of any team bottle up such anger and emotion and then fling it onto some blog. It must meet a need at some level; it clearly is therapeutic for you. I do think you are right about Grantham. You may be right that Green is not as good as your cornerback, though I again don’t see why your attitude is so hostile and your tone so angry. Finally, I hope you are right about Rainey’s future behavior. We can all change, though frequently we need to be punished for our past mistakes. I hope he can change and grow and become a more stable, controlled person; goodness knows we surely need more athletes who are role models for our kids.

Hey Tampa Gator,

Congratulations on the win. You made some great points in your post at 9:47 am. But some of your other posts are uncalled for and causes your 9.47 post to lose its credibility. It looks like a real Jekyll and Hyde act. Are there 2 Tampa Gators?

C’mon dawg fans. Let’s keep Richt forever…he’s a nice guy, and that’s what matters the most to our young criminals! Nice guys always win in the SEC. He’s so nice he cancels 2-a-days, takes the kids swimming, and helps other teams in the SEC standings. Don’t fire Richt…he too nice to be fired….We’re not mean at UGA, we don’t like that. Milk and cookies anyone?

Its time for Richt to go. A brilliant OC who is now in over his head. He treats his assistants the way he would have liked Bowden to have treated him. It doesn’t work that way. A head coach who tolerates mediocrity compiles a mediocre record and should not be paid millions. Bye Mark. Thanks for a few good years. Been nice knowing ya.

When coaching has been equal UGA talent is much better we have beaten the folks badly. But when the talent is equal and coaching comes into play I don’t think we have done to much. Maybe a reason why we had such a hard time finding a DC last year. Because coaches know who can coach and who can’t coach.

Watching Richt and the decline, it is Fulmer all over again. Never acts like it really bothers him to lose in this manner, never really jumps on his players when he needs to and never beats FL. Even when TN had more talent, they lost to FL due to coaching. GA would have to be miles better at this point to get over the hump against FL. I’ve seen this movie before. GA’s in a tough position because like Fulmer, Richt won a lot early and he is a nice guy so it is hard to let him go. But for GA to get to the next level though, a change probably needs to be made. That said, a change also means there is the risk it gets worse if you don’t get the right guy. Just look at TN to see evidence of that.

No Mark, it wasn’t a great game and the folks watching on tv SURE AS HELL DID NOT enjoy it. Was it because we didn’t get to see the bang up job the band did? Maybe. Because we lost AGAIN and you don’t give a crap? Yes. That’s why.

I have been an avid Dawg fan since 1963 and from 1969 have held season tickets attending many away games & most bowl games. I am not a UGA grad but my money, loyalty and time have been focused on UGA sports. It is very awkward to write but, frankly, I have concluded that Mark Richt though an honorable and committed gentleman does not have the intellectual and creative strength to match the top tier of coaching in the SEC. His initial success at coaching the SEC was not against the caliber of staff he faces now. If we keep him we keep him for other reasons than his coaching ability but we have to be honest with ourselves.
