What Mark Richt had to say after loss to Florida

Opening comments:

“It was a very good game. I’m sure the fans [watching] on TV enjoyed it. The television people probably loved it. It was that kind of game. But it certainly didn’t end the way we wanted it to. I want to give Florida credit. They did a good job of getting prepared and doing the things they needed to do to win the game. I want to give our guys credit, too. I thought they fought valiantly. I don’t think anyone can question their effort or question their competitive spirit. It was just one of those games someone had to lose, and unfortunately it was us. I’m proud of the players and the coaches and our fans and the band and everyone else. It was a great effort by their guys and by ours too. And in the end they won. You’ve got to give their punter Chas Henry credit –- a guy who’s been a punter by trade was kind of thrown into the fire as the field-goal guy and was able to make a big kick.

On Aaron Murray’s play in the first half, when he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble:

“I know this game was very meaningful to him. I don’t think he was approaching it any different. I don’t know if once the thing started he had some different feelings inside of him, but I thought the guy really played pretty well. The first pick –- he threw the ball where it was supposed to go. … [Cornerback Janoris Jenkins] took a chance and made the play. But I can’t sit here and say Murray did anything wrong on that play. The second interception –- I thought the ball was probably catchable. And of course he got hit and fumbled, and he’s got to do a better job of hanging on to that ball.…  The point I’m making is … I don’t think he was making mistakes out of immaturity or because he’s a first-year starter or anything like that. Sometimes those things happen, and you have to decide how you’re going to rebound from it. And he rebounded extremely well. The whole team did. I told the team at halftime, ‘This is one of those games where I can promise you if you treat it like it’s 0-0 and start from scratch again and play hard on both sides of the ball, we’ll get back in this thing and win it.’ And we almost did.”

On the interception Murray threw in overtime:

“… On third down you are trying to get in position to score a touchdown because you know a field goal might not be what it takes. When you are in those situations, you just have to play ball, and they got some pressure and the ball got tipped up in the air and got picked.”

On what he said to the team after the game:

“I talked to them about deciding how they are going to react to this thing. There have been some tough losses this season, no doubt, and we have had some very big disappointments. We were going in the right direction and getting a lot of momentum and actually getting back in the SEC Eastern Division race. A victory here could have put us in a position to be in Atlanta [for the SEC championship game].”

On what now:

“Just keep fighting. Keep grinding. Show up to work. Be a grown man and do your job. And enjoy it. We’ll come back home; we’ll get back to work, play Idaho State, play as hard as we can for the Georgia people; and then we’ll hook it up the next week.”

On bowl eligibility as motivation:

“I’m sure that conversation will come up. What do we have to win, two out of three? I’m sure we’ll be fighting hard for that.”

On how to turn around the Florida series:

“Win a game like this, but we didn’t do it. We’ll be back.”

More reaction to the game:

From UGA locker room: ‘My worst nightmare,’ Murray says of OT interception.

From Florida locker room: ‘I almost burst into tears after the game,’ linebacker says.

I heard a radio commentator actually blaming the skid on UGA hiring Ray Goff. Good grief! While Ray was not successful he had an uneven playing field with UGA academic requirements being higher than the rest of the SEC and UT and UF were both annually in the top 5 or 10. I also heard we need to recruit better players. When will the media actually stop giving this guy a pass? When will the blame actually be aimed at the real cause of this problem? Mark Richt has done nothing the past 3 years. He does not have what it takes to win when the SEC is not down, although the East is down and he can’t even compete in this case. Our players are mental midgets on and off the field. It is much more difficult to defend Richt staying than it is to justify a change. Look at the record folks. He has one more win against UF than Goff did in 3 fewer years. How much longer do we have to be content with wins over Vandy and a good effort by the band?

Well, that was a heck of a game but FL still owns UGA unfortunately. Turnovers were absolutely the difference in this one. You people that are calling for Richt’s head, please do us all a favor and go away never to come back. I mean, if you are so disgusted then why don’t you just do like Jedi and go jump on another team’s bandwagon.

Meyer’s most impressive win. Without RTebow, withoutr Harvin, without Strong, with a team everybody was beating down in October, one of the worst offenses in the SEC, Meyer out-coached Richt again.

“… On third down you are trying to get in position to score a touchdown because you know a field goal might not be what it takes….” Don’t agree with Richt’s comment here; against most teams, maybe so, but if we make a field goal in our OT period it would’ve put real pressure on Fla’s kicker. As it was, Henry knew he had nothing to lose; if he misses the kick, no problem, just go to a second overtime. Our third-down play was one time we actually should have been trying to set up the FG.

Okay, folks you have got to get this thing in perspective. You expected to beat Florida because we beat Tennessee, Vandy and Kentucky! Kentucky rolled up some yards on us too. This isn’t a very good team but the faught valiantly. Realize that untill we stop talking and talking about Florida that the team goes into this game immediately of thinking of all the pressure to stop the streak. Just start treating it like any other game, enjoy it and hope our team comes out on top. Atleast that way the team won’t be carrying all the negative anticipation the fans have for the game.
Also, support our coach. He’s done a solid job and deserves our support. And please Mr. McGarity schedule our bye week before this game every season like Florida does.

The play calling in the OT period was terrible. A low percentage pass into the end zone, a run up the middle for one yard, and a hurried pass over the middle into traffic. There is no reason when you have the best kicker in college not to have at least kicked a field goal and put the pressure on Fla. Instead we gift wrap another game for them. Hopefully either Bobo will be reassigned or Richt will take over the play caliing.

I get tired of reading about UGA being out recruited in our home state. A majority of the top athletes in the state are transplants from many other parts of the country, not Georgia natives, and have no problem going far away from home to play. If the opportunity presesnts itself, many will go farther away because they have relatives all over the country. Why did Matt Stafford & Knowshon Moreno come here from Texas and NJ respectively? Or Aaron Murray and Orson Charles? Quit worrying about losing in state players and coach up the ones that we sign. Every other coaching staff does. And it seems to work pretty well for most.

HEE.HEE……HEE.HEE…….HEE.HEE

HA.HA………HA.HA……..HA.HA

18-21

and…I know….The Gators won because:

10. Chris ‘the felon’ played
9. Florida had two weeks to prepare
8. The game was played in Jacksonville
7. The refs caused those 4 interceptions
6. Murray is just a freshman and a terrible QB
5. Richt is a terrible coach
4. Grantham is a terrible coach
3. Bobo is a terrible coach
2 We would have won if……
……….and the top reason we didn’t beat that horrible team from Gainesville for the 18th time in the last 21 years….is:

……IT IS NOT SUMMER!!!!!!!

……and Jenoris Jenkins is a better CB than A.J. Jones is a wide receiver (man…he shut his arse down!!!)*******

……and Florida is just better the Georgia….even when most of their players are just freshman and redshirt feshman.

FIRE RICHT!!! FIRE BOBO!!! FIRE GRANTHAM!!! FIRE MURRAY!!! FIRE A.J. JONES!!!! FIRE THE WATER BOY!!!! FIRE OBAMA!!!! (it’s really his fault) FIRE OUR NEW AD…(he probably gave all the play call to the Gators)!!!

Other reasons…..

Florida is CUM and only plays felons like everyone else but us.

Florida is on the way down and this game proves it because we almost won…and we never almost win against CUM and his felons.

CUM can’t recruit or coach and he only wins national championships 2 out of every 5 years. Horrible coach.

So….now….we have to put up with Georgia fan nonsense from now until next November when once again…..THE FLORIDA GATORS….crush all those Georgia fans dreams and brings reality back into focus. 18 of 21 and counting. GET USED TO IT….IT AIN’T GONNA STOP ANY TIME SOON. Florida is young….Florida is very talented…..Florida is getting better….and Trey Burton is a freshman…..and Jeff Driskell and a lot more talent is on its way next year too.

Burton was the key for UF. He took over the game in 4th Qtr. Look at time of possessin and rushing yds. Dawgs can not run the ball consistently. They can not get the ball into the “grass” areas on the field. Too many times UF had tight coverage. Have to give Murrary credit for those completions if you want to bitch about the picks. There were Dawgs rushing plays that should have been for bigger gains but did not. Dawgs failed to cut off lateral pursuit…part due to timing…RBs not close enough behind blockers…linemen and FB. UF has great lateral speed and pursuit. Dawgs need a solid, quick, running game. It is too slowwwww…not explosive in first 7 yds of line of scrimmage.

Here’s the hypocrisy at UGA. On one hand, the institution has enjoyed tremendous academic prosperity over the last 15-20 years (HOPE scholarship) due to the rise in admission applications to the school (2010 over 18,000 applications for freshman seats). This, of course, increases the selection of students which, in turn, increases SATs, GPAs, and rank in class numerics. The result: the institution steadily moves up in academic prowess (think US News rankings, etc) and is able to benchmark itself relative to other high class research I institutions (think UNC Chapel Hill, University of Virginia (a school that UGA aspires to become BTW). The administration pumps its chest over this stuff. Actually, UGA’s rise in academics has hurt other schools in the region (i.e., there number of applications).

On the other hand, though, UGA can’t decide what it wants to become in football. You CAN’T have it both ways (great academics and great athletics (not, at least in the SEC). It has a large number of applicants for the football program (Georgia produces much talent). But, other programs are raiding our players now (Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Auburn). We had our chance in Richt’s first 5 years to change the landscape of the SEC East and truly reach our program’s potential. But, as it always happens to either pro sports or college sports in Georgia, we lacked the commitment and will to impose our place in the conference. Alabama, on the other hand, knew its place and you can see where they placed there resources (stadium/coach), commitment (Georgia’s fertile recruiting ground), etc. We haven’t drawn a line in the sand with the football program to say when enough is enough.

In the final analysis, UGA can’t have it both ways. I believe we will win an SEC championship perhaps 2 or 3x every 20 years. We won’t sacrifice the academic progress at UGA like most schools have done just to win a darn national championship. So, in the end, it’s hypocrisy.

Auburn…9-0…awesome rushing team from the spread…key Newton, 6′6″, 250. A running QB…11 on 11. Schedule…8 home games. Ranked #1 in SEC and nation.

UF…a new QB…Burton…6′2″, 220…a rushing team from the spread. You know why Myers is smiling Sunday morning. He has a Tebow like player now and a running game. They will see Auburn in the Dome.

Dawgs…no rushing game…same old offense…same tendencies on offense…looks like FSU in the 90s. TEs there in game…one TD…Green less than 50 yds…always in tight coverage…no open space or “grass” for him”. Can not expect your QB to put the ball in a tight space all the time.. Pick in OT…check out the coverage on Green.

Now…Dean….here is the “mature” Tampa Gator….

1. I thought Murray play his heart out yesterday….left everything on the field.
2. I think (no, I know) Jenoris Jenkins is the best CB in the country and shut the best WR in the country down for most of the day…although he did make two incredible catches late in the game with Jenkins all over him.
3. I thought Mark Richt and his coaches made great in game coaching changes…both to the offense and to the defense…..and those changes almost brought Georgia back. I thought Bobo called a great game…it could not help it that his best offensive player (A.J. Jones) was being almost totally shut down by Florida’s best defensive player (Jenoris Jenkins…another #1 pick at CB…as a Jr….in the NFL draft this year….alond with A.J. Jones).
4. I thought…and still think….that the coaching problem at Georgia is not with Richt and Bobo….but with Grantham.
5. Orson Charles proved he is a big time player yesterday and gives you guys hope at receiver since A.J. will not be around next year.
6. I was surprised that Florida’s offensive line dominated your DL.
7. Finally….SPEED KILLS…..and Florida is loaded with speed…and a lot of very young SPEED…..including the very fast MLB (Jelani Jenkins) that came out of nowhere to tip the pass in OT to help Florida win the game….and Cody Riggs…the freshman…who came in for the injured soph at CB….and played really fast…and really great.
8. But you guys can keep on wanting to fire everyone….even though your team played well yesterday and your coach, coached well yesterday.

I am a Gator fan…not a Georgia fan. I follow the Gators and I am tired. Florida has a LB named A.J. Jones. Forgive me for being tired and flipping the names.

…..and….if you watched the game….almost every time Murray threw the ball to A.J. “GREEN”…..Jenoris Jenkins either intercepted the ball or nocked it down (and yes, Green did make a couple of “Five Star” catches late in the game. Jenoris Jenkins is why they did not throw the ball to Green very often…BECAUSE HE WAS COVERED LIKE A BLANKET. You have to be open to catch the ball!!! AND YOU HAVE TO GET OPEN TO HAVE THE BALL THROWN TO YOU. Green didn’t get open very often this year against Jenkins….and he didn’t last year against Joe Haden either…and both Jenkins (will be) and Haden (is) are first round NFL draft picks at CB. Just the facts….my man…but continue to blame the coaches and Murray for not throwing to Green more….and ignore the fact the they couldn’t because Jenkins covered his arse all day like a warm blanket. Richt will NEVER see the SEC championship again!! I saw a better team that was hungrier for the win. I turned it off after the first quarter. We out gained them 80 yds to 20 and owned the time of possession yet they scored first?? Richt is totally asleep at the wheel. Our running plays are lame ducks, our passing attack looks like its stick in 1993 FSU world. We have some of the best talent in the conference on both sides of the ball and will likely finish UNDER .500?!?!?! Wake up Richt supporters, fryer Richt is 2-8 against the nasty Gators and is turning out to be quite an embarrassment for the fans and school against our “arch rival” NO its not even a rival anymore when UF owns our ass and could care less year after year knowing they will get a win.

Oh yeah and as a proud state of Georgia resident FRIGGIN MOVE THE GAME EVRY OTHER YEAR TO THE GA DOME!!!!!!! What a bunch of idiots we look like down there every year. One day soon our side of the field might as well be empty. Let our great state make some $$ of this pathetic game for once instead of feeding the lizard den with our dollars.

Bobo’s awful offense did NOTHING new for the “big game”? What kind of high school crap are we running? Florida out rushed us big time and if we can’t beat them when they suck what does that say about our program. We are SCREWED the longer Richt hangs around. Guy is happy with the loss and thanks the band on the way out????

Georgia wins if the turnover margin wasn’t 4 to 1.
Georgia wins if Meyer doesn’t have two weeks to develop a new offensive unit and the game plan to go with it.

Since 1993, UF has taken the week off prior to this game 13 times. Florida like Georgia will always be solid programs and IMO you cannot let one team have that adavantage over another team in a rivalry game like this one. UF in 1993 started an 11 year run of taking their bye the week prior to Jacksonville.

But in the end, Georgia needs to overcome it and win.

Anyone else see Rambo talking crap and waiving his hands after hitting a guy who just caught a pass for 20 yards over the middle?? I’m so sick of seeing this clown always talking crap trying to be an enforcer over the middle of the field when he doesn’t do anything to disrupt the passes thrown deep. He is constantly being exploited by the other team for HUGE plays. I wonder how much he talked after he let a sure game changing interception slip right through his hands??

That’s one of our major problems. We have a bunch of talk, but very few of our players go out there and make the big time play. Kudos to Murray for recovering the way he did after some tough luck. A.J. made a couple of big grabs. The other tight end didn’t have a good game, but Charles sure did. Goes back to the defense. If you would have told me that we would have scored 31 against Florida, I would have taken it and thought we won. Yet the anemic offense of UF figures out a way to scorch us for 450 yards.

No team can expect to turn the ball over 4 times and win. Not many teams are that good. UGA especially not. UF has the mental hold on this game. All it is. Most of the time the talent is pretty equal, the mental toughness of the players comes into play when teams are this equal. They have it, we didn’t for the most part.

Top Recruit……I agree. Just look at what Oregon’s doing this year. You can feel the energy when that offense is on the field. But if you run the spread……you better dam well commit to it as a complete offensive effort. Auburn has the perfect fit in Newton for that style offense. It seems the days of just pure power football are waning. I would like to see more “thinking outside the box” with our coaches. But I’m afraid it’s going to take some new blood somewhere to turn this thing around.

UGA 85, the bye week plan is no mystery to anyone. If we have such a problem with it, why don’t we take our bye week before the Florida game also?? The 2 weeks to prepare does me a lot, but that just shows you how stupid we are for continuing to allow them this advantage. We like to alternate our bye weeks from before the UF game and before the GT game (a game meaningless to SEC championships). UF has a big rivalry game for their last reg season game too, but they rarely take the week before the FSU game to take their bye week. How dumb is it to take a bye before your last reg season game anyway?? 11 straight weeks of games, take a week off, play a game, take a month off before bowl?? Doesn’t make much sense to me other than the powers that be want the GT game more than an important SEC game. We already know what GT is going to do, taking 2 weeks to prepare for them isn’t going to matter.
