Murray: OT interception ‘my worst nightmare’

JACKSONVILLE – A few comments from the Georgia side after the loss to Florida:

Quarterback Aaron Murray on throwing an interception in OT: “It was my worst nightmare, especially to know that my team had worked so hard to come back. I tried to get it out before [A.J. Green] made his cut, and I threw it a little bit behind him.  . . .  At first I thought the tip [by Florida linebacker Jelani Jenkins] would just put it on the ground. But Florida has great athletes, and if there’s a tipped ball still in the air, they’ll find a way to come up with it.”

Murray on Georgia’s comeback from a 21-7 halftime deficit: “We fought our butts off all game. A lot of teams would go into halftime in a game like this and give up, but not this team. It wasn’t the way I wanted us to start the game with an interception, and I thought the whole first half was rocky. But we bounced back and finished strong. You have to be accurate when you play this athletic of a team. I had a little jitters, and I was probably more amped up than most games, but I won’t make any excuses.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo on the Bulldogs’ four turnovers: “You just can’t turn it over. It kills momentum. It gives them an extra series, an extra shot at plays. You can’t do that and expect to win.”

Bobo on Florida containing A.J. Green: “They play a defense where they’re going to have an extremely high safety. We called a lot of things for A.J. that just ended up going to other guys, and the tight ends benefited from that, and so did Tavarres King and Kris Durham.”

Outside linebacker Justin Houston: “One thing about this team I like is that we always fight hard, but a big situation for us today was losing the turnover battle. It’s hard to win a game when that happens. I thought the defense looked good at times, but we have got to learn to play all 60 minutes.”

The thing that needs to change in the UGA-UF series is the timing of our week off. We’ve had 8 rough weeks in a row. They’re rested. Going back to the 70s, the team with the week off before this game always wins. In the 70s and 80s, we always had a week off, while Auburn played Florida. Then we got the Gators when they were tired and we were rested.

Right now we have our off week the week before Tech, and I understand why. But I wish it was before UF so we could compete on level terms. If the Gators don’t have that week off, we win.

Anyone who has ever played in this conference knows how hard it is physically and emotionally to have a good week of practice when you’re dragging. Even Saban can’t do anything about getting his kids back to normal after a rough game.

Play calling and the inability to stop the run,,,,,3rd and 19 we give up a first down again……we just aren’t very good, every year its the same old thing, a breakdown in fundamentals and another loss. I told my friend the first OT play beforehand, it just went to the opposite side…..predictable…

How do you people expect these players to have confidence in themselves when yall are so negative; if they fart in the huddle yall expect ship to fall from the sky on them. Did yall not make mistakes and learn from them? The same process works for these guys just like it worked for you growing up. With age comes maturity on and off the field give them a chance! Things are coming around we can only get better remember this wasn’t a total beatdown they played hard and will play harder. Only thing I think the coaches need to show more passion.especially the head coach.

Im not as complacent as other Georgia Fans here on the board are. 4 turnovers to Florida’s 1. Whats its now like 16 turnovers in last 11 games we played Florida compared to their 2. Bobo’s play calling again was sub par at best. We have been jinxed or a hex put on us going down there. Aaron Murray played his worst game to date maybe it was because he was back in Florida infront of family and friends and was uptight. He threw 1 pass to A.J. Green before the half and i gotta tell ya there were bunches of plays A.J. got open but Murray never looked his way. Florida didnt take Green out of the game Bobo did. That contributed to our demise then Georgia’s black defense couldnt stop the friggin run. Georgia Tech has a similar offense. Guys on defense dont play as a unit each one is for theirselves and thats evident on them trying to pick the ball up and run with it instead of falling down on the ball. Bad tackling, missed assignments, no pressure on the QB their lucky it wasnt 600 yds.
We need more white players on defense yeah sounds racial but so what. Blacks are better all around athletically but arent as smart or better fundamentally as the white athlete. White ball players arent as selfish and self centered as black players are and would rather win for the team than gain personal attention. If there were white players on defense they would have learned their assignments faster.
White players are better tacklers and are more intelligent as to where they should be on the field and if there was a fumble they would have layed on the ball instead of picking it up. If youve noticed on the field most penalties are called on the black player than the white player.
Offsides, holding, personal foul, flagrant fouls mind you. Yeah i agree the black player is the better athlete as an individual but not as a team player.
Recruit more white players there at Georgia and you’ll get better results and there wont be as many in trouble with the law. Im only given my point of view and call it as i see it. Grantham will have to be more patient teaching those players how to line up on defense than he would if there were white players on D.

I am 1977 GRAD AND REMEMBER WHEN WE COULD BEAT FLORIDA. MY SON, WHO WILL BE AT UGA IN JANUARY, REMEMBERS NONE OF THIS, AND VOICES THE REALITY NO ONE IN THE ADMININSTRATION OR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT WANTS TO FACE. UGA IS A SINKING SHIP!!! WE HAVE THE PLAYERS, BUT NOT THE COACHES TO BRING US OUT OF THIS MIRE. WE SHOULD ALWAYS BE COMPETITIVE AND ABOVE TEAMS LIKE SOUTH CAROLINA, ARKANSAS, AND MISSISSIPPI STATE. THINGS STINK WHEN OUR STATE IS SURROUNDED BY GREAT TEAMS, AND A FUTURE NC AND HEISMAN WINNER, AND WE ARE LOOKING TO TRY TO BREAK .500. I THINK THE FANS, THE STUDENTS, AND THE ALUMS DESERVE MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been a life long UGA fan and it is just smoke and mirrors as to why we think we are a top notch program. It’s not the coaches because they attract talent by way of preparing for the NFL. They aren’t a part of something, they come to UGA to prepare for the NFL which creates an individual attitude from the beginning.

Cant you look at the past games and see that —I think I could do a better job that Richt. Give me a break. By this I mean everyone of them but Justin Houston… The Defensive line isnt what we have had in the past.. The worst part is the Defensive Backs.. Man they r horrible..Those Defensive backs should really think more on getting a Degree cause they Definately are not NFL Caliber!!! 4-3 sucks!!

The pro-style offense has to go. It’s to predictable and Coach Bobo who is a fine coach is not a premier offensive coordinator.
As I watch this game, I came to the conclusion that the Georgia Bulldogs have outstanding players, but the coaching has no imagination and creativity.
I blame this on Coach Richt and his inability to move in a different direction if something is not working. He refuses to look at teams who are winning and gather something from them that may fit the Georgia players.
How is it that every team we play can run the wildcat formation and spread offense and sprinkle a little bit of their teams fastest players
in the mix to create outstanding plays but our fastest players sit on the sideline?

For me it’s past the the Georgia vs Florida series, it’s about understanding what it means to be a Georgia Bulldog. Coach Richt on the sidelines and in team press meetings remind me of someone who is trying to keep a pay-check.
I don’t see the passion in him and although I’m a Coach Richt fan, he’s done as a sucessfull head Coach.
I hope our committments stay with Georgia. Go Dawgs and best of luck with the remainder of the season. Murray thank you for your effort and to your teammates we are are proud of you. Thanks to all of you for coming to Georgia. I wish the coaching staff the best but at season’s end either Bobo must go or both Coach Richt and Bobo must go. Thanks to Coach Grantham and the defensive coaches.

I was there when the folks like you wanted to fire Dooley. I stood by him. Coach Richt is a very good football coach and I’m standing by him just like I did Coach Dooley. As a former coach myself, I know the pain the players and coaches are going through today. Believe me when I say they are much more upset about this than you are. They need our support. I’m not gonna lay blame on coaches or players – but the bottom line is the dawgs score 31 points….and lose. With the turnovers the still score 31. I listen to a certain fella on the radio in Athens harping on how UGA isn’t getting the players….I couldn’t disagree more. A simple eyeball test of these monsters in our uniforms is al you need. You can’t tell me these highly rated recruiting classes would struggle this bad consistently in other programs – I just don’t believe it. And they struggle most when the game is on the line. The problem as I see it is the HUGE momentum changing plays. To me – most of the time its one blown defensive assignment that leads to a long td, or another play action call when everybody in the stadium knows we are going to run playaction that turns into a huge sack or even a sack/fumble. Or a loose ball is in our players hands – fumble or interception that should have been ours. Worst of all – zero ability to stop the other team when you have to (South Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado, Miss State and Florida scored to either win the game or take the lead late) and this has been going on for a few years. How do you fix these things? This seems like a much larger issue than playcalling or defensive strategy. This is starting to look like a culture hes been bred where nobody – coach or player – is held accountable for anything. Thoughts?

Proud of the way the guys fought back into the game. That is something we might not have the past few years when playing florida! I think regardless of his shaky game, Murray is going to lead us to a few big victories over those brantley/burton led gaytors. I am still supporting CMR as the head coach, but i do think blobo needs to get outta there, his playcalling stinks big time…

When we had BVG as DC from 2001-2004 we only gave up over 30 pts once, and that was a 34-13 loss to the eventual 2003 nat champs LSU. It seems that we have just gotten used to seeing other teams put big numbers up on us. I miss the days when we wanted to put the game in our defense’s hands instead of us all just hoping that we could somehow manage to just hold them to a field goal inside the redzone. I hope CTG can get things going in a hurry, i wanna see results next year! I wanna see alec ogletree bring back that hardnosed, hardhitting, defense that we got used to seeing every week with thomas davis, greg blue, and the BVG coached defense. I’d rather have an average offense with a great defense anyday.

Wow, with about 90% of you guys on this thread knowing exactly how to beat Florida, you’d think some school somewhere might have picked you up. You don’t have to like the coaches or where the team is, but remember, these are kids, the quarterback has only been eligible to vote for a year. Every minute on that field has a little less than an hour’s worth of work put in on the back end by the kids and more than that by the coaches, so don’ think that you can stroke a few keys and know better than Richt and co. Let’s get behind the boys and beat up on some Idaho State Bengals.

I’ll say this: Spurrier made it a point to beat Georgia when he came to Florida. To Spurrier, this game was huge –he hated (hates) Georgia because they ruined his undefeated season & a shot at the NC. Georgia was so dominate so long ago that Georgia still leads the series 46-40 even though Florida has claimed the last 18 of 21. So, for those who think Georgia gets to jacked-up for this game, or that Georgia gets too nervous when they play Florida, I ask you this: How did Spurrier approach this game when he was hired in 1990? The answer is Spurrier changed the schedule by moving the Auburn game & placing a bye-week in front of the Georgia game every year. To sum it up, Spurrier took this game serious –the ONE game that Florida HAS to win, and with that he changed the momentum. In order for Georgia to get back to winning this series our coaching staff has to do the same thing. Until then, Georgia can only expect to win 2 of 8.

MRC , Let me remind you that about 90% of these people also saw Martinez as inept. Were they right?

Having said that, there will always be idiots on the blog, and then others just venting their frustration. Bottom line is I don’t think any true DAWG fan with a competitive nature can be satisfied with winning 2 of the last 10 games against Florida, especially when Georgia has had the better team in at least 4 of those games. At the very least Georgia should be 4-6 over the last decade.

Florida’s defensive backs are far superior to ours and have been the difference in wins and losses the last five years. They recruit receivers to play corner and safety and we don’t. Offensive playbook I said it when Bobo came on board, Dawgs will not win at a high level with his obvious playcalling ability. Richt will either start calling plays or he is on his way out I’m afraid and I hope he isn’t because who else is out there better than him overall. Dawgs are getting better the defense is better, but the secondary is out of position badly and that is a credit to offensive coaches everywhere, and I’m wondering if the 3-4 is not right for the SEC, seems if we don’t get to the quarterback then somebody is going for a big gain far too often. Great effort by the Dawgs, one play here or there namely the 2 point conversion that didn’t go to the best receiver in the nation, and they need to coach defense to fall on the fumble ,don’t be a hero, just be a team player!

In the old days

October 31st, 2010
12:44 pm

In the old days before overtime and games could end in a tie it was said that a tie was like kissing your sister. Losing to Florida year in and year out is like kissing your ulgy sister. Maybe Richt should follow Metterburger’s lead and go to a junior college where he can be successful. It’s not that coach Richt isn’t a good coach it’s just he can’t win the games that will keep his job much longer. Having AJ Green and not getting the ball to him but twice in the first half for 12 yards is about like having a gun to protect your house but not getting the bullets to go with it. Just will not get the job done. We didn’t help ourselves either by kicking the ball to Chris Rainey and letting him return most of them 40 yards. We have kickers who can put kickoffs out of the endzone but they haven’t been in a game in so lone that the coaches must have forgot that they are still on the team. As for where this game is held I don’t think it meams a hill of beans, it could be played on the moon and the outcome would be the same. It’s about attitude and a mental block that tells fans and players we can’t win this game no matter what. I would say bull to that but the proof is in the pudding so to speak, just check the record. McGarity has to decide if he can redirect Richt toward the goals he sees for UGA football or make a change and gamble on someone else to do so. Murray is growing as a young quarterback and will only get better. It would be nice if Green and Houston stayed around for next year but I can understand that the chance of a lot of money coming their way is hard to resist. T. King, M. Brown, and O. Charles will be great targets if AJ leaves after this year so we should be okay.

Do you want to know what the most predictable thing about this game was?

The half-a$$ed, fair-weather fans of the University of Georgia football team who don’t say a word when we are winning…but as soon as we lose a game they come out in force to bash the team or some of the players and scream “I told you so”…

The same shameful, cry-baby so-called supporters that said before the season started that someone else should have been given the nod at QB. The same ones that somehow think that Mettenberger or young Hutson Mason might have had more success this year, which is totally ludicrous…those that complained about Murray during the four game losing streak…then proclaimed his greatness when he got us back into the race…now you want blame him for this loss and burn him at the stake…

This kid doesn’t deserve that kind of sorry support. He has played outstandingly for a young, first-time starter in the SEC. His numbers in the league as well as nationally are still some of the best accrued this year. He still has less INT’s and more TD’s than a very large number of his peers.

He will learn from this. He is only going to get better. A lot better. And you know what? He doesn’t care one bit about personal accolades. He only cares about this team and whether they succeed or not.

I said earlier that he didn’t deserve the kind of “support” some of you lousy, two-faced fans were giving him, but that isn’t totally correct.

The truth is…you don’t deserve him.

Macclenny_dawg,

I think if you’ll go back and watch a replay of the end of the first half, Coach Richt did use all of his timeouts and did force UF to punt. UF was actually setting up to throw a hail Mary at the end of the half, but due to Coach Richt’s quick action in calling the timeout, they had to punt.

I’m not going to make the argument that Coach Bobo’s play calling was perfect, but those of you who say it was “terrible” are either simply reacting emotionally about the outcome of the game, or you are just willfully ignorant. We scored 31 points, despite 4 killer turnovers and despite at least two huge missed opportunities for turnovers. Aaron Murray was admittedly “amped up” in the first half and didn’t play well. Once he got going, the same coach calling the plays had outstanding results. We scored 24 points in the second half against a very good defense. What more do you want? (btw, that’s a rhetorical question).

Jim in Augusta,

But which school has consistently had the higher ranked class? I don’t think your astute, in-depth analysis at espn.com told you that. I don’t like the UGA losses, but at least I have some perspective.

Your comments about race and “hexes” can at best be considered ignorant. Please go away and don’t come back.

Having a week off is no guarantee of victory (look what it “didn’t” do for us last year), but I think in the long run it definitely makes a difference. It never hurts to have an extra week to rest up and recover when going up against your toughest opponent. And, as Urban showed, it can give you an opportunity to really shake things up on offense, if you choose, or target certain weaknesses on either side of the ball.

I’m so sick and tired of all you dawg fans bad mouthing coaches, wanting a new quarterback after one bad half. This was one of best coached game, and great game to watch all year. The dawgs are getting better, but its the fan base that is on the decline. I’m ashamed of you. What high school recruit would want to come to UGA after reading all of your comments after every game. I want the dawgs to win every week. It messes up my whole week when they lose. But I see improvement when I see it. Having fans like the ones who do this stuff is disgraceful. GO DAWGS.

The overtime interception was actually a result of terrible offensive line play. Murray should have thrown it away but he was trying to let green make a play. The Gators RUSHED 3 defensive linemen and dropped 8 in coverage! How in the heck did 3 DL put so much pressure on Murray. On that play the OL did not block! It was intercepted because there was 8 DB’s waiting and the QB was getting pressure.

Turnovers always kill us.

Key stat…. Bulldogs when trailing at halftime have not made adjustments and won the game since 1989!!!!!!
