News from Gators: Offense ‘modified quite a bit’ for Dogs

With Florida coming off an open date, Georgia coach Mark Richt said Sunday that he expects to see some new things -– “some interesting twists” — from the Gators’ offense on Saturday in Jacksonville.

Correct, according to Florida coach Urban Meyer.

“I’m not going to share much with you, but we have modified quite a bit,” Meyer said today during his weekly news conference, which can be viewed on Florida’s website. “I’m obviously not going to say, ‘Here’s what we’re going to do,’ but things are modified.”

Perhaps more importantly, the open date gave Florida a chance to get healthier, Meyer said.

“The injury issue, the personnel issue, is real, so that’s going to help, I’m thinking,” he said.

Running back Jeff Demps has been limited by a foot injury since the Sept. 18 game at Tennessee.  (”We got smacked with an injury that just devastated us because we’re not dynamic enough,” Meyer said.)  Demps ran on a treadmill Monday and was expected to practice for 20 to 25 snaps, Meyer said.

Meyer also said there is “good news” about the status of placekicker Caleb Sturgis, who has missed Florida’s past three games because of a stress fracture in his back. “We’re going to try him this week,” Meyer said, “and see what happens.”

Defensive tackle Jaye Howard, who suffered a sprained ankle in the Oct. 16 game against Mississippi State, will be “good to go” against Georgia, Meyer said.

As for wide receiver Chris Rainey: Meyer said a decision will be made Thursday on whether Rainey will play against Georgia. Rainey was dropped from the team after he was arrested last month for allegedly sending a threatening text message to a former girlfriend.  He was recently reinstated to the roster.

Florida will enter Saturday’s game on a three-game losing streak and with an offense that is ranked No. 9 in the SEC and No. 89 in the nation.

Meyer noted in his news conference that Florida already has committed more turnovers this season (14, including eight in the past three games) than in all of the 2008 national-championship season (13). He also said the Gators’ running backs have accounted for only four plays of 20-plus yards this season compared to five in one game (Florida State) last season.  Working to improve such deficiencies was a big point of emphasis in practice last week, Meyer said.

Asked if his team feels a sense of desperation, Meyer said: “I like the word ‘urgency’ instead of ‘desperation.’ ‘Desperation’ sounds awfully desperate.  ‘Urgency’ sounds urgent.”

Click here for UGA news: Branden Smith will play Saturday, barring setback, Richt says.

Personally, I am quietly confident the Dawgs will get it done this year, all things considered. Am I nervous? Dang right… these are the Gators we’re talkin’ about.

Florida–changing their offense? big deal—Grantham’s 3-4 D will shut that weak O down cold. They only scored 7 points against MISS STATE! Are you serious. In fact, florida may not even score against Ga’s fast D. Ga wins this game in a rout! Ga 38 Fla 10

Expect a lot of screens (WR and RB) from the reptiles to counter The Dawgs suddenly incredible pass rush. Also, pray Demps can’t go. If that’s the case you can bet Rainey will play some TB.

A win here would make us a virtual lock for 6-4. Who”d of thunk THAT after 1-4. Having the IT player (Tebow, Cam Newton, etc) clearly makes an impact on an offense. AJ makes a REAL impact, and its time we go ahead and agree with that assesment. Caleb is back to compliment Ealy and the offense that’s averaged 42 points per game this month – with a special teams that is 2nd to noone – is primed to cause quite a bit of trouble for Urban’s boys.
What Chris Rainey did was inexcusable…. but it looks like he will play – and we need our outside LB’s to shut down the outside gaps. Secondary is starting to make plays, so get ready for Cuff, Commings, Boykin, Jakar (hopefully Branden) and the gang make the athletic plays they were brought to uga to make!

Folks this is football, not rocket science and everything that can be done has been done before. Meyer is a good coach but you can only do so much with what you’ve got and the Gators ain’t what they used to be in the 90’s. I’m an old Junior College coach and my sense is that Georgia wins and wins bigger than people are imagining now. If the Dogs go up by at least 14 points the Gators may fold and fold hard.

We can let UF go all they want between the 30 yard lines but we MUST make them kick field goals.

UGA is only giving up about 16 a game so I am optimistic. (last 14 to UK were trash)

Also, our first penalty came late in the third Qtr against UK.

Say what u will, but Grantham is slowly making progress (sans Cuff’s inexplicable play).

If the Dogs are gonna win:

We rush for 150+ from the TB position

Win the punting game for field position

And the X factor is a few big grabs from Durham, yes Durham

All Meyer’s gonna do is put Trey Burton in for more snaps. Big deal.

Really, he can’t modify it too much in two weeks and be that effective.

Game speed is a different level from practice.

Last time UF played a 3-4 they got slapped around (see 31-6 at Bama).

This game IS Grantham’s coming out party. It is THE reason he was hired. 3-4 is designed to beat spread offenses by having one more linebacker.

I am hopeful.

That’s good, Urban – change everything so that you will using it for the first time in a game and screw up every time you touch the ball – by the way, did ya’ll notice that Oklahoma’s secondary tackles and plays the pass like we used to? OH! Willie is the secondary coach there now! I mean, they can’t pass cover, they can’t tackle – Willie is alive and well in Norman. Ealey’s back, King is back, Smith is back, Green is back………..bring it on.

Florida’s off week prior to the game concerned me. Remember the three times we’ve won in the last 20 years, we had the week off before. We shall see…

Nobody is fretting this game more than Da Preacha Man. If he loses this game, he is back in the dungeon, on a lower floor than the one we threw him in after the other Bulldogs smacked us down like amateurs. It would also put us on the road to a historic losing season, leading to his termination. For those of you who think Richt oughta go, this might not be a good thing because odds are he will be replace by another idiot with UGA ties. Kirby Moore and Will Muschamp come to mind. This would be a BIG mistake. The UGA needs to pay for the best proven head coach in the country willing to move to Athens. Having connections to the Jawja mafia is definitely not a trait to be desired if you would like the Dawgs to compete again for the NC.
