Washaun Ealey ran for 157 yards and five touchdowns on a career-high 28 carries Saturday, but he’ll have to battle for playing time on Georgia’s practice field this week.
Coach Mark Richt said Sunday evening that Caleb King, back this week from a two-game suspension, will resume competition with Ealey for carries at tailback.
“I don’t think there’s any reason why [King] won’t get back into the mix,” Richt said. “I think he’s played pretty well this season. He has improved in a lot of areas throughout the year. We’re confident in his ability to play, so I’m sure he’ll get right back in it. I don’t know in terms of how many carries and all that kind of thing right now. We’ll observe those guys through the week of practice.”
Ealey told reporters after Saturday’s game that he “tweaked” his right knee in the fourth quarter but that it was nothing serious. As of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Richt said he had not heard anything from director of sports medicine Ron Courson about Ealey’s knee.
“I think, if something was going on, Ron would have called me by now,” Richt said.
Ealey limped off the field in the middle of the fourth quarter Saturday but returned three plays later and then made his longest run of the night, a 41-yarder. After two more carries, he left the game again in favor of Carlton Thomas.
“The way he finished, I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Richt said.
So, assuming Ealey’s knee is fine, he’ll resume his friendly competition with King, who had claimed the starting tailback job before his suspension.
“I do think that once a young man lives out his discipline, then he’s back in good standing with us,” Richt said. “We’ll give him as many reps as we think he deserves just by virtue of his practice and what he’s done in the past. The discipline’s over.”
A few other items from Richt’s conference call Sunday:

The players may or may not feel like the fans. If we are being honest, and I am, Urban could switch
out players with Idaho State and we still would not feel confident in a win against the gators. Dawgs
have won 3 straight and fla has lost 3 straight. However, UGA just gave up 31 points and 400+ yards to
kentucky. Corch Urban Myers is chomping at the bit to get to our db’s. Maybe Houston will have a huge game.
As for the article… King has fresh legs and should be trying to earn some respect back from his coach.
He will end up being the featured back.

Wow, the play action pass does not work if you do not run the ball first. If the running game is working why would you want to pass….We beat UF three years ago running the ball to score first…then later we passed effectively because we were unpredictable in that game….Maybe we could get them thinking run and then hit our receivers to win again….Just a thought.

Regardless of what happens in Jacksonville, i think Gerogia has a good chance of upsetting Auburn. If they stay in their lanes on defense to corral Newton and force him to throw i think they can hold them to 24 and Georgia is certainly capable of putting up 27 to 30….but of course nobody has done that yet. Auburn has holes that defense that both Georgia and Alabama can expose.

Sometimes a week off is helpful and other times it is not. UF will get some people healthy, which bodes well for them, but they are a banged up team. How many times have we gone to Jax with a Key player injured (ex Shockley), with everything else going for us and lose, in my opinion because of these injuries? UF has so many players dinged up and injured, Demps has been bothered by a bad ankle, Brantley’s ribs, and they even had to run the TE at TB in their loss to Miss St. I guess I feel the worm has turned, it seems this time. Georgia is as healthy as we have been all season, and even with Rainey coming back for the Gators, the dogs get King back from suspension as well. We may even get Smith back at DB (I hope), to spell the worst corner in the SEC, Cuff.
We also know that Georgia is becoming tough to run on, and UF has not all season had its running game. Brantley has not lit up the scoreboard either. Henry although a great punter, is having difficulty with placekicking. Georgia is on a roll, Florida is rolling the other way.
On paper I like the Dawgs chances. If we play mistake free solid football we will win. The time off for UF although helpful to heal, might not produce anything other than that.

I hope just because UGA has won the last three games that CMR doesn’t go back letting Bobo play offensive coordinator without a lot of supervision.
I saw a lot of the old Bobo in the Kentucky game and it wasn’t very pretty. I hope that CMR realizes that if we didn’t have four turnovers that Kentucky would have won with the run philosophy that Bobo insist that we establish. It’s ok to run the ball 25 times a game but we should throw 45 times. It will open up the run. If Kentucky wasn’t the worst red zone team in the SEC we wouldn’t have had near the success running.

I hope that when the coaches sit down and do thier required blog reading in preparation of the weekly coaches meeting, the one piece of advice they skip over is: When you are running the ball effectively, you need to stop running the ball and pass it more in order to open up the run. And when you are controlling the game and have eliminated the only chance the other team has of winning, you need to see if you can take more risks, give them a chance, and then be able to say you won anyway.

Bulldog Joe, Aaron Murray threw the ball twelve times the entire game. That’s three time each QUARTER !! (if you can’t do the math). And, CMR always plays those blow-out type games “close to the vest.” He does what he has to do to win the game and that’s it. The game was never close. Period. Bobo could have lit up the passing game and easily scored 21 more points.
I’m not going to make predictions on the Florida game. Winning is purely psychological for Georgia most years anyway (Tebow era notwithstanding). I do think that this year we have them outmanned from a personnel standpoint top to bottom. They are on their heels as a team, and we have something to prove. We’ll see how it works out. Brantley is obviously seriously overrated and is certainly no Garcia, Mallet, or Hartline. Florida has no running game, and if we keep pressure on Brantley all day long, it could be very telling as to the final outcome. In short, one of college football’s greatest traditions should remain so this coming Saturday. I can’t wait. Go Dawgs !!!!

Richt states that King “will be in the mix” which of course he should be, but it’s clear that Ealey is playing with confidence (now). I predict that Mark will play both, but that King will get more playing time for no good reason. It’s Mark/Bobby Cox’s way to do exactly the opposite of what most of us would call common sense.
Another humorous point is that Mark was happy because ““I’ll tell you what. That is music to my ears, quite frankly. Because those are some of the very things we wanted people to feel about us. We wanted to earn people’s respect, and it sounds like we earned their respect”…who cares. We beat three mediocre teams and now he’s happy and content…sounds like championship material to me.

If Richt rotates the RB’s we will lose because neither will get a rhythm of the game. Remember sticking Shockley into the game on the third drive? No rhythm, threw a pick 6 we lost by 7. Learn from your mistakes. Anyway Ealey needs to play as much as he can then get a rest preferably by Thomas first or Munzenmeier(sp?) before King.

Also, UGA has nothing to lose this week. I don’t even think CMR is feeling pressure for whatever reason. I have predicted accurately 3 straight weeks or blowout victories and I won’t stop this week. UGA 42-17 in a a easy win against the hapless Gators.

My point is, we have the ability to bury our opponents, not just hang on for a win. If we go to Jax with only a 7 point lead with 8 min left because we have effectively shut down our offense by being predicatable running on 1 & 2nd down, you are a fumble away from having the game tied up. I say open the offense, score as many points as possible and let them try to play catch up. Too many times in the past we have tried to shorten the game by running all the time and it has cost us. I never saw SCal in their prime shut it down. We have shut it down with a lead since 2007 with few exceptions and it has cost us. Go Dawgs!

UGA insider,
I’m a big homer like you but this game will be an all out war. We will score a lot but so will they. Meyer will change up the QB’s a lot with Burton spelling Brantley. Florida knows they are doomed if they rely on Brantley to run their offense. They will most likely run a lot more spread option with Burton, Demps and now Rainey.
Colorado killed us with it. Florida can too.
Murray and co. will have to keep the gas all the way to the floor.
I predict a late Florida turnover will win it for the Dawgs 35-31

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
And watch those red panties falling from the sky!

So many times Richt has gone to Jax with the most conservative offensive game-plan of the season, even when everybody knew he had the best team.
I am optimistic that, knowing that he needs to finish the season with a flourish, Mark Richt will let the offense attack UF on Saturday. Just have faith in Murray (why not, he hardly ever throws a pic?) and keep the accelarator down for 4 quarters – just like ‘07.
What?

@Daphne,
Oh really? Talk about genius? Do your math again, or in your case, arithmetic. Mark Ritch: 1) 4th winninest active coach in NCAA Div I, 2) averaging 10 wins a year, 3) only the 6th coach in NCAA history to reach 90 wins in 9 years. 4) and, last but not least, you’re an idiot.

Look for FL to pull out all the strings this w/e. They’re not playing well to date so look for more trickeration from Meyer, i.e., fake punts, fake FG’s, RB option pass run, you name it they’ll try it to keep drives going and keep GA’s O on the sidelines. GA’s special teams better be prepared to defend the fakes and the DC have his players ready on option plays.
GA’s playing well but still giving up too many 3rd and longs. This will be a close game and team w/fewest mistakes wins.

Good grief, I am confident if we are late in the game at J-ville with a 7 point lead, they playcalling would be different than a 3 TD lead against KY with the game not even close to being in question.
But if we have could grab a huge lead against FL, who wasn’t showing any ability to stop the run, and we only had to throw the ball a dozen times, why on earth would you want to do anything different at that point?

I’ve noticed in past games this year and last year that the more carries Ealey gets in a game the better he becomes later in the game.

buy 70% of the ticket’s. worse fan support in the country. gsu will attract more fan support than techie in the next 2 yrs.
