Read all about it: Georgia’s third consecutive victory

A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s 44-31 win over Kentucky:

My game story, which starts with how much difference a few weeks have made for Washaun Ealey:

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Tailback Washaun Ealey, whose fumbles cost him a spot in Georgia’s starting lineup earlier this season, claimed a spot in the Bulldogs’ record book here Saturday night.

Ealey scored five touchdowns as resurgent Georgia extended its winning streak to three games and evened its record at .500 with a 44-31 victory over Kentucky in Commonwealth Stadium.

Ealey’s touchdowns — all on runs of 3 yards or less — set a UGA single-game record for most rushing touchdowns and tied the school’s single-game record for most overall touchdowns.

… Ealey called the record “a great honor” but gave the credit to the offensive line and fullback Shaun Chapas. “They blocked hard all night and were more physical than Kentucky was,” he said. As for his own performance: “I feel like I played up to my potential, and I have to keep doing it.”

Mark Bradley’s column, which starts with how much difference a few weeks have made for the Georgia team:

LEXINGTON, Ky. — On the morning of Oct. 9, the Georgia Bulldogs were 1-4. We mention this because … well, because it’s Oct. 25 and they sure as heck aren’t 1-4 anymore.

They’re a robust 4-4, having won three SEC games by the aggregate score of 128-45. They’re 4-4 headed to Jacksonville in a better frame of mind than the hated Gators, who’ve lost three in a row. They’re 4-4 and maybe they haven’t beaten the Who’s Who of BCS Bullies, but it wasn’t so long ago Georgia couldn’t beat anybody anywhere.

And now you’re asking: Is this apparent resurgence the real deal or just a red (and black) herring? And the answer is …

Jennifer Smith’s sidebar on the impact of Kentucky’s turnovers and Georgia’s defense:

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Justin Houston had a look about him before the game.

Georgia coach Mark Richt noticed it right away.

“You could just see it in his eyes that he was ready, that he was ready to play hard and make some noise,” Richt said of his junior linebacker. “Justin was fired up and ready to play. He knew there was a good chance to get some sacks today.”

… Houston was part of a defense that forced UK into nearly as many fumbles in the first half Saturday night (three) as it’s had all season. In all, the Georgia defense scored 21 points off of four Kentucky miscues.

My notebook, including an item on Brandon Boykin’s big kickoff return:

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Georgia’s Brandon Boykin, who twice returned kickoffs 100 yards for touchdowns last season, was up to his old tricks Saturday night.

After a Kentucky field goal cut the Bulldogs’ early lead to 7-3, Boykin fielded the Wildcats’ kickoff at the goal line and returned it the length of the field, mostly down the left sideline, for a touchdown. Blair Walsh’s extra point stretched Georgia’s lead to 14-3, although at that point the Bulldogs had run only four offensive plays.

Mark Richt’s postgame comments, including this:

“We’re very, very excited about winning a game somewhere besides Athens. It’s good to get three victories in a row. It’s good to even up our record in league play and overall. We’ve caught a good little bit of momentum, and I was really proud of how we came out ready to play again.”

Kentucky coach Joker Phillips’ postgame comments about the Dogs, including this:

“It’s the best pass rush team we’ve seen, no question about that. One of our offensive keys to the game was we felt like we had to handle the edge rushers. They’ve given a lot of people problems.”

And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot of Richt and cornerback Sanders Commings celebrating Commings’ first-half fumble recovery:

There is no such thing as a “tainted” win over Florida. Gfrost, you are a moron.

I just realized for the first time in maybe 10 years I have no idea who the starting QB is for Florida!

I guess all those years that UF beat us because they actually had a better team at the time are “tainted” wins for them.

For all you chest thumpers, we’re all Dawg supporters but the best I see this season ending is 7-5. No way we beat AU this year. A loss to UF is entirely possible which would put us at 6-6. A possible loss to our rival = 5-7. That’s great if you drink the kool aid. I prefer a solid Coaching Staff, recruiting solid players, developing them into champions, and competing for Championships.

Richt gets another year, we get another handful of thorns. Hope I’m wrong.

Hey goon,
It may come as a shock to ya, but there are alot of true dawg fans that feel just like I do. Me a Tech fan? I was probably a Georgia fan, before you ever put the words Georgia and Bulldog together in the same sentence. This goes for your buddy RMikel58 also.

Mike T., and other negative fans, if you are UGA fans, why would you ran on the “kids” parade when they are doing well? You all ought to be proud. Our team will do better as we show them we believe in them. You guys are too negative. We all have passion, but these are kids. Be happy for them when they do well. I know they are not getting paid (well at least some of them are not getting paid, but that’s a different blog) and neither are we. This not life and death.

I have to say I am impressed with the way Richt has gotten this team prepared.

I have been a huge critic and still say that the trends of this program are going in the wrong direction, and regardless of what Richt has done against bottom feeders this year, Florida has bein the bain of his existence so far. Pull this one out on Saturday and having these boys prepared to play would be a big step back to respectibility for him.

jtdawg – I agree, that at the end of this season Richt is going to have to shake some things up. Starting with discipline, he’s has to get his arms wrapped around the off field problems and the fact that his players are admitting after games that either their heads are not in the game or they’re quitting. If a player of mine admitted he was quitting or calling out others you can bet your sweet dollar I’d be all over that players arse and others. I think Richt has to look at our recruiting strategy… Garner has been in that role too long IMO.

I will be the first to say Auburn isnt going to beat UGA for sure… UGA nearly always plays AUburn well. However, the majority if you are clueless about the team– Cam Newton is the best QB in the nation, hands down. Extremely efficient passer– and we put over 400 yards rushing on the supposedly tough defense of LSU.He is FAR from a thug– he made a big mistake and paid for it– he left Fla voluntarily after Tebow announced he was coming back. We have 2 very good running backs and a killer defensive line- get a load of Nick Fairly. The defense, suspect in the secondary, still manages to get the job done. If Auburn loses to UGA, I will be embarrassed, because clearly Auburn is a better team right now. However, we all have seen these top teams go down.

Brandon Boykin held RANDALL COBB to 45 yards receiving and no TD’s… He shut him down!!!! COBB scored in every game this season except against UGA because Boykin was all over him. The sad part is nobody even noticed. Cobb didn’t do anything in that game… Boykin is a beast and is sooooooo underrated by you fans… you better appreciate him while you can… might not be here much longer…

Dawg stuck in Bham, watch the replay, Houston forces the first fumble; not a give it; Rambo forces the second fumble, not a give it; and the Kentucky rb sees Gamble in his peripheral vision about to tackle him behind the line at the goal line forcing his eyes away from the ball, thus causing the fumble. Reality three “forced” fumbles not give ups. Stay consistant, when the defense gives it up like Cuff did on the one play, okay, but when they make a play give the credit where its due.

Go Dawgs!!

Dawggonefan2, you are right, Boykin and Commings have come on strong and are almost to the point of dominating. Now if we could just get Cuff and the safeties to performing at their level we could begin eliminating some of the third and long deficiencies.

I’m not sure that I understand how anyone can say beating Kentucky in Lexington isn’t a quality win. Are they an SEC powerhouse? No. Did they just beat the favorite to win the SEC East last week? Yes. Anytime you play a conference game on the road at night, I think it’s a quality win. Heck, had we beat Miss State nobody would have said it was a quality win either, but, listen to all the poll voters talk about Auburn, and they are quick to mention Miss State as a quality victory for them.
