Kentucky coach: Dogs’ pass rush was ‘by far the best we’ve seen’

Kentucky coach Joker Phillips commented on several aspects of Georgia’s play after the Bulldogs’ 44-31 victory Saturday night:

On Georgia’s pass rush:

“It’s the best pass rush team we’ve seen, no question about that. One of our offensive keys to the game was we felt like we had to handle the edge rushers. They’ve given a lot of people problems. We had to use some chip (blocks), to chip our way out to give the guys some help.

“But you can’t use it all the time, because you won’t get some of the underneath control guys out free sometimes. But the times that we didn’t, especially the first time, the first pass we tried — first dropback pass we tried — they got pressure on us and caused the fumble. But this is by far the best pass rush we’ve seen.”

On Georgia’s running game:

“A couple of those times they ran on us, it was a nine-man front. Somebody’s got to make the play for you. You’ve got nine guys in the box, and the only reason we didn’t have 10  is we wanted to put somebody over the top of [A.J.] Green. Want to have somebody underneath and somebody over the top.

“So we had a nine-man front. You’ve got to get yourself off the field when we’ve got nine men in the box.”

On Green’s influence on the Georgia running game:

“One thing you don’t want to do Yyou don’t want to single him up a lot. You want to try to put a guy underneath and a guy on the top so it takes another guy out of the box.

“But late in the game they were playing two-tight end sets and two-back sets, so you actually have an extra guy when you put that — you don’t have to cover down on another receiver, because they’ve got two tight ends in the box.

“But, yeah, he does help their running game because he brings another guy with him. You’ve got to mix and match your coverages. You’ve got to get two people over the top of it or one guy over the top of it at times. That gives them the ability to run the ball with numbers.”

On the play of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey:

“Good back. Every week you play in the SEC, you’re going to face some good backs, and he is good, tough, hard-nosed. A typical SEC back; that’s what you’re going to see every week.”

Good coach. His offense gave us some fits in the second half. Thank you Joker for beating South Carolina last weekend! GO DAWGS!

Fantastic job, Ealey! Great ball protection, great downhill hard running, great finding holes.

You carried the Dawgs tonite, made the $24.99 I spent on PPV worth every penny. Keep it up!

Go Dawgs, beat the Gators.

They moved the ball too easily on our D last night. Just glad the offense took advantage of the short field in the first half and we won the special teams battle. Also our ground game kept their offense from being on the field more in the 2nd half, which could have been trouble. Hope Houston and the boys keep that same pressure on Brantley next week and UF still has it’s identity crisis on offense. Guess they should have let Cam Newton keep those lap tops.

Still, good win over a good KY team on the road. GO DAWGS!!!!

P.S. To any bugs who may post over here as usual: how y’all do yesterday?

It is amazing what you can do with a short field on offense. In the earlier games that we lost the field was long. Great effort with the running game. Hopefully we will learn that we do not have to pass to set up the run. The last time we beat UF we ran every play in the first drive. Then after UF scored we hit the long pass to Mo and we did not show predictability that we have shown most of the time on offense….Seems like we have not let the Backs get into a rhythm in the past like we did last night. Even Herschell had to get into a rhythm…but it never took him as long as some of the present day backs because Dooley was a running game coach. Have to take our passing game and get into rhythm with running game to experience the level our offense should have. Great KO Return.

I don’t subscribe to ESPN 3. I went to, found the game and ESPN3 logo, clicked on watch game and clicked on full screen.

But this should not be a problem next week. That game should be on “real” TV, I would think.

We are so close to being a complete team, if we can just shore up the weakside secondary. Williams and Commings continue to impress and are really doing a great job working the strongside. In fact, I would say they are rapidly becoming two of the best in the SEC. But the weakside is awful, Cuff and Rambo are playing with no communication, bumping into each other, Rambo pushing Cuff out of the way, Cuff pushing Rambo out of the way, etc. etc. All the points Kentucky scored were a result of these two. Time for a change, we played Love some and he seemed to give us a small spark, we need Smith to come back, and Rambo must be replaced with Ogletree. We cannot beat Auburn that does throw the ball well (we won’t even mention the running of Newton and Dyer), because they will feast on these two. UF you know is working the offense to take advantage of these two.

Grantham and Lakatos I hope find solutions soon. The front 7 is playing as well as any front seven we have had at Georgia in some time. Please find a pair that can play on the weakside!

I hope Smith will be back on the field this Saturday. Cuff is a liability. I had nightmarish visions of Bryan Evans on three of Kentucky’s TDs last night.

I think ESPN3 is only available to certain internet providers. I know a couple of years ago when I used Bellsouth I was unable to access ESPN3 but now that I’ve switched it’s been available to me.

The Dawgs are looking better and better and the pass rush is really coming around, I hope they work Cuff and Rambo the hardest this week because they will be throwing their way next Saturday.Having Branden Smith back should help if he comes back. The offense can move the ball effectively. Is Caleb coming back next week? Gotta Get them Gataaas!!!

ESPN3 does have to be made available by your internet provider. My providers logo is right on the ESPN3 homepage when I go the site.

UGA72 is right on. Cuff is killing us and it makes no difference that he’s fast when he’s constantly out of postion, blowing coverage and taking the wrong angle… just like Brian Evans last year. He’s running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Is Lakatos not seeing this?

It’s not particularly pleasant having to call out kids on a public blog like this so I’ll spare the names, but I seriously hope that the coaches decide to choose the unknown potential over the known blundering of some of the current experienced starters in the secondary. That’s the only negative point I can see.

On the positive side, UGA looks like they have decided to start hitting people in the mouth. That’s 3 weeks in a row that they have dominated the line play on both sides of the ball. In addition they are playing smarter, holding onto the ball, committing less penalties, etc. This team could beat just about anyone right now.

This team should handle the current Gator team and the Auburn game ought to be a great one. Cam will be tough to stop, but I don’t see Auburn stopping UGA either.

Don’t tell me we can’t compete with Auburn. Kent played them tight. SC and Miss St. played them tight…and we played those teams tight, except for KENTUCKY WHO THE DAWGS DEMOLISHED. LSU played Auburn tight, and LSU almost lost to TENN…WHO WE DEMOLISHED. The past is the past….I dont think anyone will be excited about playing the Dawgs right now!

First things first….BEAT FLORIDA. I know they have had a week off…And the thought of them loosing 4 in a row is hard to fathom….but they have been spiraling down at the same time the DAWGS have been putting it together…that three SEC blowouts in a row for Georgia…thats some momentum!!! Kentucky exposed some glaring issues we have…thank God. Now we can work on those and get a plan together for the Gators. I can’t wait for this game…I hope the Dawgs run it down there throat..then drive some nails in the coffin w some deep balls to AJ! Georgia needs to come out hard from THE START! Not make mistakes and capitalize on the ones they will make…and they will…then put the petal to the floor and not look back! GO DAWGS!!!!!!

German Shepherd Dawg, Read the fine print and you’ll discover that you can only get ESPN 3 if your internet service comes through certain providers. Mine doesn’t qualify which stinks so I was basically penalized $24.99 by ESPN for not having an IP that has buddied up with them. I hate monopolies.

As for the game, since I had to pay, I’m glad that won, too. They have my hopes up for next week when they come to MY town.

Brandon Boykin held RANDALL COBB to 45 yards receiving and no TD’s… He shut him down!!!! COBB scored in every game this season except against UGA because Boykin was all over him. The sad part is nobody even noticed. Cobb didn’t do anything in that game… Boykin is a beast and is sooooooo underrated by you fans… you better appreciate him while you can… might not be here much longer…

October 25th, 2010
10:52 am

Great game vs the Cats ! Now the Gators….this will be a war both UGA and UF can right their ships with a win UGA would pretty much salvage the season with a win over the Gators and Bugs but…no looking ahead its the damn Gators and the WBOCP..GATA! Go Dawgs!!

October 25th, 2010
11:55 am

Commings is starting to show promise at CB and Boykin is playing like an all-SEC CB. the weaknes is with the safeties… Rambo may be better suited at WR as he is elusive and has good hands. His coverage skills are lacking and Cuff is inconsistent in coverage also. Ogletree may be the long term answer at safety and getting Smith back against Florida is a must. Is Marlon Brown still out with an injury? I didn’t see him on the field against Kentucky. It is time for Kiante Tripp to step up at DE.. He has a world of talent.

Did Bryan Evans change his name to Vance Cuff and his number from 3 to 25? GOOD LORD!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, I am happy with the win, and look forward to 4 in a row come Saturday baby!

UGA will lose to Florida and most likely a severe beat down. Auburn is going to beat UGA by at least 35 or more. That means if the Jackets beat UGA it will make a 7 loss season. No bowl game for thUGA. Any word on weather or not the NCAA has ruled it legal to recruit prison inmates? if not UGA will not be able to field a team.

I am fast. I am too small at a listed 5′10″ and 190 lbs to tackle effectively and I am not a natural cover man. I am again ………. too small for Big Boy SEC ball. I am a horrible tackler and my buddies will get better and they are both 6′2″ and that is big boy ball. They can get better ……….. I will never.

I need to play the O as a wildcat type of back. I can be used as a decoy in the flanker around or as a receiver but I am simply not a true Corner Back.

I am gonna tell Bobo to play me on O and sometimes return punts or K.Os. I have been mis cast for two years now as an All World ( gonna be) D back. it will not happen.

Gooooooooooooo Dogs.
