Herschel Walker expressed concern about the number of Georgia football players arrested this year, saying coach Mark Richt has “got to take control” of the issue and the players “have to take responsibility.”
The former Georgia football great, who led the Bulldogs to the national championship as a freshman 30 years ago, was asked about the issue during an appearance Wednesday on ESPN’s “College Football Live” program.
“That’d concern me a great deal,” Walker said. “The losses, that is going to concern me as well, but when you got kids that got off-field problems, we need to get into and see what’s going on. Because when you got off-the-field problems, there’s something going on with that program.
“And I think Coach Richt has got to get a hand on it. I love Coach Richt. He’s a great coach, and there’s no doubt: I do not think Coach Richt should be fired. We got to find out what is going on within that program when you got 11 guys since March that have been off-the-field problems.”
Of the 11 players arrested this year, four were kicked off the team by Richt, one left the program after getting a six-game suspension, one got a two-game suspension and three received one-game suspensions.
“He’s got to fix it,” Walker said of Richt. “He’s the leader there on that team, so he’s got to take control.
“Athletes got to have responsibility,” Walker added. “That’s one of the problems I think athletes have today. They don’t want to take responsibilities, but they have to take responsibility. You’re in college; you’re not out in high school anymore; you’re in college. . . . If you got a problem, you got to be penalized. Now, Coach Richt does that, but I think you got to be a little bit more harsher.”

Although his grammar is a bit “underdeveloped,” Herschel got it right: “They don’t want to take responsibilities, but they have to take responsibility. You’re in college; you’re not out in high school anymore; you’re in college.” And, after you turn 18, boys, you’re not a legal infant any more. In the eyes of the law, you’re an adult.

I also concur with the idea of bringing him in as strength and conditioning coach – the man is a BEAST. He still looks like he could suit up and run some people over. Hmmm, he have any eligibility left? ROFL!!!!

So Herschel went on ESPN, which opened tge Dior for ESPN to natinally critisize the program, and point out the absurd thugush activities going on in Athens, such as college kids drinking, possesing fireworks, not having a middle name, forgetting to pay a speeding ticket and emerging from an alley on a scooter.
Herschel, your appearance did more harm than good. Maybe we can stay out of trouble this coming offseason, and then we can get the best in state recruits to believe in us again. But I doubt it.

Walker also expressed his concern regarding the loss of in-state talent to out of state schools. He used CAM NEWTON, who everyone now knows is from Atlanta, as an example. This was after he said he would vote for Newton for the Heisman. Chris Fowler then mentioned Newton as one ” that got away.” This is funny because, incredibly, Bobo never offered the kid! How could one get away when you were never after him to begin with! Bobo’s “good ole boy” arrogance cost Georgia a Heisman winner and effectively empowered Auburn with a physical freak of nature that will probably lead them to a national title! Until Uga rids itself of these coaches and former players from small town Georgia with their preconceived notions regarding certain athletes (including your offensive line coach, Stacy “good ole boy” Searels), your doomed to mediocrity. One national title in a gazillion years is proof of that.

First of all, Herschel is respected by many other than just UGA fans, regardless of grammar. Second, why would a man who built his body with push ups, get in a weight room to teach weight training? Why would a man who has many interests, get involved with today’s program other than support?
He would absolutely be a great recruiter, trainer of young bodies, example of a good citizen, and an example of how to live life within the confines of law. His financial success should be a point to these young men, and he did it the right way and behaved himself.
If Herschel did not care about the program, he would not have spoken out. Perhaps he needs to give a pep talk to the players before a game. Show some of his film and fire up these guys.

BMDPD. It’s your coaches, particularly Richt, that is the problem, not the kids. These are the same kids that are at Auburn, Alabama, Florida, etc. Richt’s more concerned about his tan than these kids and the indifference is reflected in your off the field issues. It’s not the kids, it’s the coaches. It will probably calm down now because as the weather cools , Richt won’t hit the lake house as much. You guys should be in pretty good shape until the Spring.

The only player Richt kicked off the team was the freshman scrub, after Richt and Adams announced the zero-tolerance polocy for non-starters. The other players were either in jail for an extended period or kicked off by Adams when he was campainging for NCAA Czar. Recall Richt’s star recruit at FSU, Randy Moss, who was in jail for 60 days for drug dealing and couldn’t go to class. Richt and his poppa couldn’t figure out a way to fix that one.

Herschel hit the nail on the head, that the problem is larger than CMR, it is the entire program. UGA is still living in 1980 while other teams are basking in more recent championships, which is the crux of the problem with UGA.
The entire coaching staff needs to be gutted, but there are too many politics, especially with Bobo, that this is not going to happen. UGA fans are just to arrogant to make any changes.

In Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge, if a player gets stopped by police, the player is taken to the coaches house and handed over with nothing else happening. In Georgia, they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Georgia has it right. Just makes it tough to have a good record though. Same thing happens academically. Players are protected academically at alabama, Florida, and LSU. No so at UGA.

Yeah I get that some folks think the University and Athens/CC police are targeting athletes these days. But I just don’t buy it and think it’s an excuse that doesn’t place responsibility where it rightly belongs . . . on the athlete. Not criticizing your point of view, mind you . . . just taking issue.

Logans Run, you may be right about your “righting the ship” theory. Really, nothing would make me happier than for Richt to finally get his act together. But personally I still think it’s time for Richt to go and if that makes me “short-sighted” in your opinion, well then so be it. As for your theory, well there’s still a lot of football to be played this season and you may want to withhold final judgement til after the season if you’re judging strictly on wins. But even if Richt wins out, he still needs to address glaring problems with two assistant coaches and team discipline. Brother I just don’t see it yet.

Well Well after years of the same problem a couple of former players step up and say richt has to take control. Why didn’t they step up when this first became an issue? This isn’t the first year UGAY has had players arrested! Only issue here is that as long as the program was winning more than they lost no one cared how many thugs were on the team and spending time in Clarke County lockup, fans, coaches and alumni all turned a blind eye as long as the wins rolled in. Now that they have lost a few games everyone all of sudden wants to jump up and put their 2 cents worth in. We all know that richt is not going to change anything and take control of the program-heck he was the coach who instructed his players to storm the field and draw a penalty in the Florida game a few years back, richt has the same mentality as his players-they act like they are Gods and free to do whatever they want and no one should be allowed to stop it. Perfect example of richt’s discipline idea..”We will not tolerate anything further, our players should take responsiblity for their actions and if they don’t I think they know what will happen” Oh wait it was Ealey that got locked up-wait we need him on the team can’t kick him off like I did what’s his name that freshman linebacker who didn’t play anyway. If you institute a Zero Tolerance policy it should be ZERO, NADA, NYET in other words NO means NO. It should not be Zero for 6th string and a 1 game suspension for 1st and 2nd string players. But that is life at ugay..win at all cost and turn a blind eye to everything else..Her-shall ballet boy Walker proved it by waiting so long to speak up-and you idiot ugay fans applaud him for stepping up now and even defend his inability to speak comprehensible English and praise his ignorant ebonics laden quotes. VERY TYPICAL!!!!! THWG!!!!!!!!

I believe that listening to Herschel’s message should be more important than critiquing his grammar. His message is very simple, grow up, be a man and do the right thing. In his nude poses there was no frontal nudity (it actually showed less than if he wore a Speedo) and showed how an aging body can still be toned and beautiful. Herschel is a successful author and business man, so his UGA education cannot have been a total bust as some would like to believe. Again, don’t be so busy checking the syntax that you don’t get the message.

Herschel is clueless. Most of these things are for stuff like “non excessive speeding” and stealing a $20 used scooter helmet. Just not big stuff.
It’s not the NUMBER of arrests, it’s the SEVERITY of the crimes that you watch for, and unlike Tenn’s players kicking a guy–leaving him to die, or Florida’s guy texting a death threat, Georgia’s errors are minuscle comparitvely.
Herschel offered NO SOLUTIONS, only CRITICISM. Should have gone to Richt directly, stsyed in house, no loyalty to Richt.
Lost a lot of respect for Herschel for throwing Richt under the bus.

Coach Richt is the best thing that has ever happened to UGA, Vince included. All you bandwagon Dawg fans are pathetic. I would be proud to have a son under the tutelage of Coach Richt. Even the greatest of coaches go through down years. Has this been a bad season of off-the-field stupidity by a bunch of 19 and 20 year olds? You bet. But Richt can’t babysit 24 hours a day. Cousin H is right! Some of the offenders today don’t care about shaming their family, school or friends. They do it the THUGA way. That’s the way we roll today. Back in Cousin H’s day if someone got into trouble there was going to be heck to pay starting at the top with the college and coaches and then on home to the family. Todays “player” is just that. A real player like we see getting into trouble in the pros. Maybe we have sold our soul to have a “CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM” at the expense of getting players who have no concern for representing the school and their families. When we are recruiting maybe we should look a little deeper than what happens on Friday nights with these kids and see what they do and how they act during the week. And what kind of family life they have. Used to be coaches had great influence over the kids. Not so much today. WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN You dawgs know what I’m talking about. CMR had the same issues a FSU. Just saying…he is a fine man but he’s in a tight spot too. WIN WIN WIN Face it, it’s a business today, it’s not about fielding a good team to represent the UGA. It’s about the MONEY!

Everyone is missing the big picture. Herschel Walker is probably the greatest college back of all time, but why should Richt be listening to him when he is saying “get it together.” Walker has numerous split personalities (if you read his biography you would know about it) and he should “get it together” before he starts telling other people what to do. Also, Herschel walker can’t hold a candle to Quincy Carter in poor speech and grammar. Quincy came and read to my middle school one time, and you guessed it, he can’t read worth ####!

The real problem here is the staffs lack of PR. Part of this staff’s job is to position the team to win. Look back to LSU in 2007. We sat back passively waiting on the voters and pollsters to rank us ahead of LSU. NOT SUCCESSFUL. That should have been us in the NC game w/ 2 losses. We should have been all over every media outlet with every thing we had.
Now with these arrests we sit back and passively say we know these guys know the rules. We’re really strict now… bla bla bla. How about learning and keeping up with the times. Position yourself as you are rehabilitating these horrible arrests and changing these young men’s lives. TURN the negatives into positives. Look at Florida with Demps. This is my concern with the program. This is the missing dimension. Kicking guys off the team clearly doesn’t solve the problem.
@Bremen Dawg –
Exactly what I have been thinking. Its not like CMR is recruiting mystery athletes here. All the schools have some issues with this as its the nature of the beast.
Also lets clarify arrests and problems. The media blows these things up heavily. If you look at what these arrests and off the field problems are then you probably are not that alarmed at the program.
I think you have to compare apple to apples. 1980 was vastly different and let me say that I bet there were some guys who received some xtra benefits back then. I don’t think the NCAA was looking into bank accounts etc…(aj).
Lets all be honest and say that nobody really cares about these arrests. Its inversely proportionate to wins. If you’re winning then these things don’t really matter. Oh wait your losing here comes the off the field problems. same old story. If I could help I would. If you are a high profile alum save your negative comment or offer to help (See Boss Bailey). Hershel I love you man but you’re words won’t help. Only actions.

let’s see if i have this correct. a player is given a full scholarship worth thousands of dollars and the opportunity to play ball. should he be good enough, he could play pro and make lots of $’s. if not good enough, he could still get his degree and become a productive member of society…win/win.
so how about a simple rule…any trouble and you lose your scholarship and are out of the sport?

All coach Richt has to do is be a coach who cares about what goes on in his program under his watch. It seems he got set in a comfort zone after a few good seasons and thought as long as you win it is not a problem. Well they aren’t winning and the light is being shined on the problems that should have been dealt with long ago. Every program has problems it is just how you choose to deal with those problems that will make or break a program. Coach Richt is finding that out firsthand,so stop trying avoid the issues and deal with them right away. Kids are going to screw up that is part of life but if you don’t set the example right away you will be tested always. Being tested with a losing record never turns out good.

I said that weeks ago. I agree 100% with Walker. But the responsibility not only rest with Richt, the players are no longer little boys. They have to take responsibility for themselves on and off the field. I also said that Rich needed to take over the play calling from BoBo because he was doing a poor job in the previous weeks. Richt has to become a stronger Coach when it comes to managing his personnel.( Coaching Staff & Players) If he doesn’t, he will eventually be replaced. He should know by now what the UGA Alumni, Financial Supporters, and Fan expect of him.

After reading some more of idiot bullpup comments a person can come to the following conclusion. 1st off it’s obvious “what’s important” is in love with Her-shall why else would he view the nude photos and speak so lovingly of Hes-shall’s nude body. I am a Tech fan and supporter and I could care less which current or former Tech player posed nude as I would never view the photos much less call their body toned and beautiful. GOOD LORD MAN SHOW SOME BACKBONE AND BE A MAN!!!
Secondly I find it very amusing that a “FAN” like Barry actually stated it’s not the number of arrests that count it’s the crime being arrested for. My God Barry! So by using that way of thinking if one player rapes a woman and the other just beats a woman, the woman beater shouldn’t be punished as harshly as the rapist or would you say vice-versa? If you are going to clean a program up it should not matter what the crime is, what should matter is the fact the thug is immature and being arrested in the first place and should be kicked off the team. If Barry was your coach he would be telling his players-Look guys I don’t care if you drive around campus or town drunk, I don’t care if you are smoking crack or dealing drugs, I don’t care if you steal a scooter helmets from other students who by the way don’t have a free ride at college. Little crimes are ok for the school just don’t get arrested for a major crime because I may be forced to suspend you for two games!! Barry you’re an idiot..Little white lies lead to bigger lies and either one makes you a Liar–little crimes lead to bigger crimes and either one makes you a CRIMINAL..THUG..WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT. Herschel has earned the right to say whatever he wants however he wants. He should be the one to speak to the team before the Florida game. I believe that the talks that Boss Bailey and Thomas Davis had with the team the last two weeks about what it means to be a Bulldog had a lot to do with the team’s performance. Befor the Tennessee game I was in favor of taking the G off the helmet and making each player earn it. Still dont know that its not a bad idea. No Freshman wear the G. No one arrested wear the G. The attitude has to change.

Smitty the buck stops . . . or at least it should . . . at Richt’s desk. He recruits them and he and his staff coach them. It’s not about babysitting them 24/7 . . . it’s about communicating expectations that things will be done right or they will not be on scholarship . . . and then holding them accountable. The off-field problems didn’t just begin this year. It began several years ago and has gotten worse each off-season. And I think a correlation can be drawn between this lack of discipline and our mediocre seasons the last few years. A coach can survive a few such seasons if he has control of the team. But lack of control and mediocrity on the field can be a deadly combination for the job security of any coach. Even if Richt doesn’t win out, I’d be surprised if he isn’t the coach again in 2011. We still owe him too much money! But after next season I don’t think there are any guarantees if things on and off the field aren’t substantially better.

This is very easy to say from the outside looking in Herschel! Kids are going to act up. With the demand these coaches have and the focus on winning being so high it has got to be hard! It starts with recruiting but how can you turn down a kid who grew up in the ghetto and had no discipline (lack of parenting) yet can carry the rock like nobody else around? These coaches think they can change these kids but it just isn’t happening. Let’s face it, BCS football is the minor leagues for the NFL and it has become it’s own entity whereas something has got to change. It’s not a matter of who is doing “IT” it is a matter of who is getting caught. I think many schools out there are in smaller towns and the police forces have been hiding the players behind the jurisdiction and these days the cops aren’t putting up with it. These players think they are above the law in many cases (Come on Caleb….all u had to do was show up for court and the man would have given you a chance) but they are finding out quickly they can be replaced without a question. For many of them this is their life, the only chance they have, so ZERO TOLERANCE is the only way. You have got to cut the scholarships when they get arrested and found guilty! Until we see some real harsh changes (yes it will suck the first couple of years because many will not adhere and get kicked off) this will continue to fester all over college football. I don’t think the coaches should be in complete control but the NCAA must take some of that away and make penalties more harsh!!! (otherwise we are questioning the coaches decisions constantly).

1) Some one pay off the bars to not allow players entrance. 2) Require valid drivers licenses to enter practice. 3) Booster make a large contribution to the ACC Police Gala (thats what all bar owners have done for years to avoid crack downs). Let’s face it, ACC Police is the main reason for our discipline problems. Herchel Walker was definitely a great and could see him as a RB coach, but not a Str and Con coach. He is a beast but that doesn’t mean he knows how to make others beast also. He got his strength from doing pushups and crunches during commercial breaks as a young kid. He barely spent any time in the weight room at UGA. He is a calastinic freak, but it would be hard for him to pass that along. Kudos fro saying what needs to be heard by the whole UGA coaching staff. Herschel’s right, but I’m not sure Richt can get control of the team now.
For one thing, athletic dorms were eliminated in 1996, and…for all the negatives they had…it was sure easier for a coach to monitor where players were and what they were doing. But also, I think Coach Richt has that Bobby Bowden “FSU mentality” about a lot of things. Bowden would always excuse a lot of behavior…both on and off the field…by just saying “them boys are just having a little fun, and sometimes go a little too far.”
And that’s the case here with Georgia. In recent years, we have seen:
1. Georgia become one of the most penalized teams in the conference, and a lot of the penalties are foolish ones, coming at critical times.
2. Georgia players dancing and shimmying on the sidelines in the late fourth quarter of a game we were losing.
3. Georgia players make foolish mistakes, and then shouting back at their position coaches when confronted on the sidelines.
4. Georgia players arrested in all kinds of off-the-field incidents.
5. Georgia players running off the field to the locker room at halftime…only to have to stop and return because there is still time left on the clock.
6. Georgia players stomping on the opponent’s logo at midfield after needing a last-second field goal to beat…of all teams…Vanderbilt.
7. Coach Richt dragging his team off midfield in the above-mentioned game, only to turn around later and instruct them to deliberately break the excessive celebration rule.
Most winning teams have a DEEP respect for their coach…almost bordering on fear. (Not fear of physical abuse, of course…but fear of embarrassing themselves, their school, and of losing their coach’s respect.) I don’t think Coach Richt has that at Georgia, and I don’t think that…once a coach loses that…he can ever get it back.

I think Richt is just weak in this regard. He could send a strong statement by withdrawing the scholarship offer to 5-star recruit Christian LeMay (made easier by RFros. Aaron Murray’s strong play at the same position), but I seriously doubt he will do that. A big part of the problem is recruiting. Until Richt stops trying to emulate the Florida schools and their love of the bad boys and starts recruiting based in large part on character, we’ll continue to have the same problems on and off the field.

Unless you were driving like a complete maniac it was pretty hard to get a DUI back then.
I’m not making any excuses for our players. I just take issue with this prevalent notion, which in my opinion is demostrated by Herschel’s comments, that things were so good and wholesome back in the good ole days. No they weren’t. Herschel knows damn good and well the kind of tomfoolery that his teammates were up to back then. They just weren’t getting caught. Not sure why anyone is getting on HW for what he said. Or how anyone thinks he was “calling out” Richt either. It’s was neither uncalled for or particularly damning. Just simply stating, and non to specifically I might add, what anyone could deduce from reading a couple of newspaper articles. “needs to get a handle on the arrests, looks like the penalties are becoming increasingly harsh, and hopefully at some point that will intersect with young men taking responsibility for thier own actions”. Ok, who hasn’t said that, including Richt himself?
And we need to try to recruit any good player in the State of Georgia. OK. Pretty sure that’s been said by every person in the Georgia family, every year for the past 4 decades. Again, who doesn’t say that including Richt himself.
BTW, as usuall the ABH does a much better job of reporting the entire context of this conversation without the slick editing for maximum headline shock and blog hits.

Who cares what walker has to say. He was significant 30 years ago and not today. What he is saying is obvious–quite obvious. I am sure Richt also knows it and is trying to address it.
After all, Walker, you abandoned uGA by luming for the bucks. Go away. We personally don’t care what you think–especially, about a subject that is of obvious concer to everyone.

Uga fans: There are at least 10, count ‘ em 10, offensive line starters for other teams in the conference from the State of Georgia that Searels could have had and yet passed on. One in particular, Roke Watkins, South Carolin’s right guard , from Fairburn, pushed you all over the field. Searels and Richt have effectively ruined the carrers of Kiante Tripp and Bean anderson by moving them from the offensive line to make room for their favorites. and the emergence of Kenarious Gates is no suprise. They knew he was a player in high school but were reluctant to sign him for the same old tired Uga reasons. Until this crap stops you’ll aways be second rate and that’s the way it should be.

The problem (in my opinion) is not Herschel’s grammar or his ability to make a complete sentence. The problem is with the coaching. Put the right players on the field that has the work ethics to get the job done on and off the field. UGA move away from the “good ol’ boy mentallity” and then maybe, just maybe, you will see better results

Dawgfan, are you addressing my comments? There is . . . I think, a bulldawg59 but I’m 59bulldawg. If not pardon the reply. I’m not speaking to technology. Of course the tests are better today than in the 70s. But they still had minimums and you could still be jailed for a DUI. Still I maintain that a comparison/contrast of what the law strictly enforces now as opposed to 30 years ago is not the problem. While detection is probably better now than then so is the process of educating the public on this problem. And then on top of it all they continue to get in trouble despite knowing how much criticism it brings to the program. To me that’s the ultimate sign of disrespect to Coach Richt. For those who think the police are targeting football players, consider this. Did they just, all of a sudden one day say “Hey let’s make life for the football program rough by arresting as many players as we can?” I just don’t see it.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?
Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 44 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

I realize that human nature is the same today as it has always been. And no I don’t think that in the “good ol’ days” all the players were perfect and the coaches never lost a game. But I honestly don’t remember as many players getting into trouble then as we have had the last several years. Some folks will blame that on stricter law enforcement today and others will claim that all the players back then were perfectly behaved. Don’t put me in either category. But for all those who point to previous Georgia teams being the same in regards player problems, please post a list of players from the 1980 team or for that matter any previous Georgia team that were either arrested or should have been arrested in your opinion. Yes I know about Jake Scott and his escapades and a few others at the esteemed Open House restaurant there in Athens. I’m not saying a list can’t be made . . . just that I can’t remember it being as consistently out of control as it seems to be now.

hey winston wolfe….dude what a gay name…..i have a woman…..which i am sure is 1 more than you…..i have several hobbies….none of which are the same as yours….Dang I’m tired of typing these periods, why do you do that? Does you brain function so slowly that you have to pause between thoughts and sentences? No I don’t wish ugay would shut the entire program down, I enjoy the rivalry and competition and am not afraid or ashamed to admit ugay has had the upper hand against Tech for quite some time now. However we are all Georgians and all have the right to support or not support whichever team we chose. Your are the exact type of idiot which makes a lot of people despise dawg fans, instead of reading someones comments and understand they are stating facts that the program is out of control and zero tolerance does not mean you pick and choose which offenses warrant dismissal from the team and which doesn’t-zero tolerance means all offenses result in expulsion from the team. You instead choose to see that someone is attacking your program and you choose to attack that person and try to put them down. I have no problem with dawg fans if they are in fact educated and sensible and understand the issue being discussed and not some drunken idiot that just wants to shout dawgs number 1 baby dawgs number 1 you suck!!!! Morons like yourself ruin things for everyone. Obviously your are one of those idiots that support crimes being committed by players and don’t want them dismissed from the team. And before you say anything about me being the one that remarked about Barry and What’s Important please read and try to understand that I was simply making a point that no one cares about hershel posing nude what does that have to do with football and why in God’s name would anyone talk lovingly about his body unless obsessed with it? And my other so called attack (call out) I simply pointed out the obvious which is a person can’t pick and choose what crimes are ok as they are all crimes and should be punished and if a zero tolerance policy is in place then all crimes should be treated the same. Now please pull your head out of uga’s butt and keep your mouth shut unless you have something intelligent to say and lay off the periods man, it makes you look like a complete idiot.

Are they getting superior coaching in Oxford? I don’t seem to recall them having players in the headlines.
So to review, the best coaches have had the same difficulty with this as Richt, while other school with lesser coaches don’t seem to. Not sure that mediocre coaching being the issue theory is really holding water.

How sad that UGA graduates students who have no idea the proper useage of the written word. Is it that much trouble to type ‘ve at the end of a word when it’s required? It appears that like so many college around the country UGA still values athletic ability above intellect. Funny how so many of those kids seem to graduate while other kids who actually understand how to write a sentence flunk out. Those college athletes must have a guardian angel on their side who either has the ability to change grades or dumb down the courses they’re required to take.
That said, I guess it’s great that in America someone with so little understanding of the English language can end up a multimillionaire.

In the formation of the United States Football League, Walker saw an opportunity to do something then forbidden by NFL rules, namely, to turn professional after the end of his junior season rather than wait for his collegiate class to graduate the year later (senior or 4th year). He also sought to choose where he would play professionally, as he felt he could make considerable money from product endorsements; as he was quoted on one occasion: “I don’t know if I would want to play in the NFL unless it was for the two New York teams or the Dallas Cowboys.”

Is this Herschel the ex-UGA football player, Herschel the Apprentice, Herschel the MMA? I would have hoped he would have been more understanding of CMR instead of jumping on the what’s going on at the program wagon. Its very simple folks. Back in Herschel’s day, all of the players lived under one roof. Made it very easy to control and monitor the players. Then, the NCAA in their infinite wisdome, decried that having a dorm for athletes was somehow discriminatory and the players scattered to the wind. Coaches in Herschel’s day would sit on the roof at night and challenge players who were sneaking off and conduct bed checks.

In his 2008 autobiography Breaking Free, Walker revealed that he suffers from dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as “multiple personality disorder”. He claimed that due to his disorder, he cannot remember the season he won the Heisman Trophy, let alone the moment. He also claimed that during one episode, he had held a gun to his own head. The bottom line is that Mr. Walker is correct. CMR does need to get control over the team members and their off-site activities. And what Mr. Walker could work on is his diction, not his grammar. I have nothing but respect for Hershel. He’s a successful business man and at 48 can kick some major ass. When Hershel talks Georgia football, everyone in the program should listen. I support Richt, but Hershel’s dead on… Richt needs to get control of this team, instill discipline and stop babying his players.
Yesterday Pollack & Bell interviewed Richt and I did NOT like what I heard about Fall training camp. Richt’s excuse for backing off is to go into the season with as healthy of a football team as possible and he referenced the 2008 season in which 28 players were injured going into the season. My counter is this… if you practice the players not to get hurt, they’ll get hurt. There’s no substitute for working hard at practice and going all out. The second a player lets up is when they will get hurt.

DawgByte, you are correct. It is a double-edged sword whether a team chooses to be or not to be physical in practice. A Team has to be physical and intense in practice or they will play soft in games. Injuries are part of the sport. 2008 was a freak year. I watched a team do angle tackles every practice and through the playoffs. The result was they won the championship!

Half to three fourths of the postings has answered something totally unrelated to the topic. For those of you that are under 20 , find a Disney blog. For those of you that are over 20 stop being so negative and pay attention to the topic. It shows your ignorance when you say the same thing on every blog. A lot of the negative answers make no sense . UGA is a big time college program and it takes years for changes to occur. The AD just hired a new Defensive coordinator. It will take at least 3 years to evaluate how good Grantham will be and where he fits in. I think it’s going to turn out that he is a great recruiter. CMR has proven he is a great coach with his record over the last 10 years. There are going to be ups and downs, that’s life.
Herschel Walker was a great football player who only thought of one thing . FOOTBALL. He concentrated , 24/7 on being in top physical condition and mentally ready for what needed to be done on the field and off. The reporter ask the greatest player in UGA history a question and he gave a very valid good answer. Leave it at that. He doesn’t understand how so many players have the time to focus on study’s, staying in top playing condition, get ready for the season or the next game, meaning learn the play book, and still have time to get into trouble. The UGA players who are getting into trouble are NOT 100% dedicated to UGA and the football program and have questionable mental focusing capabilities.
One thing that I think would help is to build a great Athletic dorm and make all football players live there for the first two years to give them time to adjust to college life and grow up.

CDAWG – Tough one to answer. Hate to think that they all went to UGA because they thought that they could not get arrested??? My guess would be until CMR can get the respect that Saban, Myer etc… can achieve, the arrests will continue. I’m a huge CMR fan, but as Herschel stated he has to be in control of his players. No, he can’t watch them every second of the day, but he has to gain their respect by demanding it. He needs to be more extreme in his punishments. That might even mean booting more kids off the team, depending on the offense. Just my opinion!

Before people like Mr. Walker comment about the off the field troubles at UGA, they need to take a close look at the Athens-Clarke County Police and the UGA police. I have had three children go through UGA the last 8 years. Believe me the same things go on at other schools but they get brushed aside everywhere else but Athens Georgia. Tell Mr. Walker to go drive through Athens after twelve o’clock midnight. He will have about a ninety percent chance of being pulled over for some made up reason. The police in Athens are like the gestapo and it is all a money making scheme for Clarke County. I am not saying my children are angels but I am saying they were all good students, loyal UGA fans and now all three have succesful careers and two have families. You almost have to spend your whole time at UGA in the library or SLC to live in Athens for four years and not but subjected to the wrath of the Athens-Clarke County police or even more so the UGA police. For the UGA haters that don’t think it goes on at your school, you have your head in the sand.

I don’t get it, never got it, never will … but I thought going to college was about getting an education. never understood why all the hullabaloo about the football team (except as my husband informs me, the one real reason: MONEY). Maybe if UGA and every other college yanked all the $$$ away from the athletic department and put it into some of the many other worthwhile college programs, we’d have kids staying out of jail and staying in school. Shoot, instead of Saturday or Sunday football games, why don’t they televise the band or the orchestra or the science department putting on a show? These athletes need priorities: They are in school to get an education, not to earn fame and fortune on a pro ball team. Of course, it would be naive for them to prioritize otherwise than the latter, because they see dollar signs in a future football career. (Or, their grades and book-learning are so weak, it’s the only thing they can think of to do in their lives.) So if money is such a strong motivating factor, this tells us that they need to first be taught the value of a well-rounded education, followed by teaching them the role of ethical decision-making in their lives, followed by some innovative approaches to learning basic subjects, before they are allowed to pat the head of UGA VIII. Meanwhile, wouldn’t it be a refreshing change to watch the UGA debate team, or a life-painting class competition, or a student piano recital this Sunday?

Is the Georgia football coach in trouble? His AD’s resignation (in spectacular fashion) certainly didn’t help matters. “Evans was in Richt’s corner. He was viewed as an important buffer between Richt and Georgia’s higher-ups, including UGA President Michael Adams … With Evans out, the game changes. Richt may have won 90 games in his nine seasons in Athens, but this is all about current events. The 8-5 season in ‘09 did not sit well with the masses.” The schedule isn’t challenging, so anything less than 9 wins would be a failure.

@TheItalianDawg … I don’t think one group is more obsessed than the other. Look at the blog about the kid decommitting from Tech. It was filled with UGA bloggers cutting down Tech. The kid was decommitting from Tech and thinking of South Carolina. UGA was not in the mix at all, but the blog was filled with nothing but UGA comments. I think that when it comes to blogs, some from BOTH sides would rather write something negative about the other side than something positive about their own. Wish we could get rid of all that fit in that category, especially if it is just the HA HA comments.

Did a little investigating last weekend while in Athens….I asked parents and students if they had any interesting stories about changes in the Athens/Clarke County police department:
The most insane story was told by the parents of a 20 yr old. He caught a cab after drinking (underage granted but responsible enough to get a cab). The cab had a taillight out and was pulled over. The boy was asked if he had been drinking. He told the truth and was taken to jail. The parents spent 2k on attorney fees because UGA has a two strike rule: Two violations and you’re out. This was one of a dozen stories that left me with a more realistic picture of what athletes and non-athletes in Athens are up against.

Key word in the story is OFF THE FEILD PROBLEMS. Why is the coach held responsible for these kids behavior. These kids are students first and athletes second. So why not hold the professors responsible, why not the dean of the school. These athletes of today are under a microscope, everything they do is watched, unlike the athletes in Herschels day. Believe me athletes were doing dumb stuff in Herschels day too.

I went to school with Herschell, dated his ex wife before he did, he’s been to my house, so I know him, like him and respect him. But let me be clear on this, he is no better than anyone else that posts here as far as knowing whats going on or what is really the problem or even about playing football. He is just a guy blessed with amazing talent. But that’s where it ends. Just because Hershell says it, it doesn’t need to be written in stone. I promise. Like someone said previously, which one of the personalities did this interview?
The main problem with the arrests are as another previous poster put it, to paraphrase, the police are tougher in Athens on everyone, athletes get no preference, as it should be. If UGA spent more time educating those kids, we would not have those problems. UGA is just like all the other Southern Universities. They only want the players (Africian Americans) to run the ball up and down the field and when they can’t do that they have no more use for them. The universities makes millions of dollars each year off these kids and the students have nothing to show for it (hope to get into the NFL). One player sold his jersey so he could go on spring break while 95% of the other affluent students go on a week spring break in cancun. What a shame!!! The teachers/coaches/president, etc just advance them from one grade to the next so they can play. SHAME ON UGA!!! This is also a bigger reflection that we have as a society when in comes to a certain group of people.

“Find your own picture, your own self in anything that goes bad. It’s awfully easy to mouth off at your staff or chew out players, but if it’s bad, and you’re the head coach, you’re responsible. If we have an intercepted pass, I threw it. I’m the head coach. If we get a punt blocked, I caused it. A bad practice, a bad game, it’s up to the head coach to assume his responsibility.”

@ steve OH PLEASE yes the big bad University taken advantage of the poor minority kids —who won’t get their lazy a@@ out of bed ,go to class, do any homework, and try to make something of themselves. All this despite mandatory study halls, free tutors for every subject, and faculty poised to give them every break in the book. Yes the same ones that get arrested even though they know the penalties involved if they are caught –ever consider that perhaps they didn’t belong in college in the first place? Or that they are taking the spot of a more qualified student?

A reminder to the retards and non-Bulldogs (one and the same, really) that our “history” does not begin and end with the 1980 team. In the final 2007 polls, we finished Number TWO in the country. Thats’ not so long ago, dudes. What are non-Bulldogs doing on this board anyway. Don’t you have a team to follow?
What kind of trophy did you get for being “number 2″ ($h1t) ? Was it a replica of an outhouse, and where is it displayed? Better save some room in the same trophy case for your runner-up toilet bowl trophy this year! Ignorant mangy mutt!

Herschel is a nice guy, but he is way too imperfect to be taking on the mentor role, at least publicly.
Richt needs to start making sure a dozen or more tickets are given to the UGAPD for every home game. Invite cops to practice and let them interact with players before or after. Let them see each other in a more personal way. Invite a couple to AD or Prez’s luxury suites every now and then. Just use some common sense street smarts. Pay the cops for extra security around games, practice, special events, etc. Come on UGA, let’s act like we’re not a bunch of dumb hillbillies.

There is no doubt the program at UGA has some issues. That is incredibly obvious. But I would like to ask everyone just one question. I am not sure how things were at everybody else’s home, but if I had gotten a ticket and not paid it, or hit a car and left the scene, my parents would have simply taken my car away from me. These kids are being given a free education, should they choose to properly use it. I am a UGA alumni, and was at UGA in 1980. I saw Herschel play in high school, and while we were certainly not best of friends, I did know him to be a caring, honorable. I even, to a very small degree, knew his parents, and I assure you they would have taken his car away from him.
Discipline starts at home. Yes, the coaches are responsible for the kids, and yes, they assure the parents they will take care of their child, but the children should take care of themselves. I am an adamant believer in a playoff for the BCS, and I am also an adamant believer that the kids should be paid some sort of small stipend to try and be normal college students. UGA’s football program and really, all the SEC’s programs bring in untold millions of dollars every year. The kids should at least be given a little pocket money, and the amount should be the same across the board for all the student athletes.
Again, discipline starts at home, but I have another strong concern. It is my understanding that one of the kids was stopped for a bad TAG LIGHT. It is my understanding that thekid was not weaving around, and when he opened the door beer poured out like in the commercials. Is the Athens Clarke County Police becoming too hard. Is a bad tag light against the law, yes it is. Does a bad tag light threaten the life of other drivers, the chances are very, very slim that the answer to that is yes. Is the police getting too ticket happy? Are they purposely targeting athletes, and then making sure the press is immediately notified. I just think something stinks within the police department.
The kids should abide by the law, but if the person driving the car had been 40 years in a business suit, driving a Lexus wvwn pulled over. I don’t think so. I just think something stinks to high heaven inside our police department.

Tim Tucker came in here with this DIRECTLY AFTER I posted it to his blog about the previous day Herschel Walker saying that CMR has NOT RECRUITED WELL IN-STATE and that CMR has NO DISCIPLINE.
For the record, YOU SAID that Herschel did NOT say that.
Nightmare for you to go to work and click on the new blog and find that THIS is what Tim Tucker, then, put on the AJ-C WebPages – not that it is NOT all over the country.
Herschel Walker didn’t say that at all.
That is what you said.
You also say that I keep repeating myself when the facts are that we are firmly in the news for 11 arrests since March 7 and now 2 NCAA probes into illegal benefits to Georgia Bulldogs players at both wide receiver and at running back. Both are our Starters. Both have missed numerous games and chunks of games in their time here, and largely those have been our games we LOST.
Losing at 12-11 over the years 2006 2007 2008 2009 and now 2010 to SEC East teams has grown worrisome as it has marched on. Yet, YOU POSTERS repeatedly make up your LIST OF EXCUSES that our players do not care about the team and that 12-11 vs a SERIOUSLY DOWN SEC EAST 2006 2007 2008 2009 and 2010 is really really great. Best coaching at UGA ever, you repeat yourself. Best Quarterback in the history of football, you repeatedly state.
TOUGH YEAR you reiterate, amid your CRIES into the darkness that our team needs our SUPPORT this ONE YEAR.
It’s NOT BEEN 1 YEAR, not been 2 years either; but, it has been instead FIVE (5) YEARS now this season.

Vandie opening kick-off and CMR this morning at 7:15 am on AM750 said that Sailors # 5 is great. Lifts him up to The Bulldog Nation by name for his play. And, what was his play ? He TAUNTED the Vandie kick-off returner after his teammate tackled him. He got into his face, he jarred at him, he walked completely around him, taunting him repeatedly but got no penalty for reasons only the Officials can explain.
Cam Newton, we have no room for on our Roster ? Are you out of your mind ? Cam Newton like so many other recruits in this great state of Georgia, we whiffed on getting. Don’t bring your LAME EXCUSES in here for our lack of star power on Offense, Defense and Special Teams when the recruits themselves make it plain as day to everyone that our coaching staff is weak, that we don’t recognize talent, that we play FAVORITES instead, that we bury on the Depth Chart better players who are younger, that we totally lack any discipline on the field off the field or in the locker-room – and that this has killed our recruiting.
No room for Cam Newton but plenty of room for Zach Mettenberger and his 2 sexual battery GUILTY attacks of a coed. And, plenty of room for us to have a THIEF on our own team this year. And, plenty of room for us to KEEP Montez Robinson on our roster AFTER he beat up a girl. Plenty of room for Michael Lemon whom CMR told us all to mail in our money to for him and his brother; yet, Michael Lemon beat up a student to a pulp. Yes, it is the 1980 in 2010. NONE of these 3 happened in 1980; I know; I was there. YOU were NOT. Jake Scott was and is a character; I like him. I talk to him. Do YOU ? No. He drives a Mercedes. What do you drive ? Herschel Walker doesn’t read as he speaks. He was nervous. He was asked on the spot about all the B.S. here in our program and he spoke the DAMN TRUTH. I listened to it 1st hand. You read Tim Tucker AFTER I TOLD HIM WHAT HE SAID and EVEN THEN Tim Tucker left out ALL THE COMMENTS BY HERSCHEL WALKER ABOUT THE SORRY BUTT RECRUITING IN THIS GREAT STATE OF GEORGIA. And, yes, Hershel Walker said that we WHIFFED on Cam Newton. Cam Newton for Heisman Trophy was Herschel Walker’s vote, he said.

3 times Montez Robinson beat up a girl as a Georgia Bulldog football player. CMR and Bobo went to meet with him in prison. And, PRAY for him, with him. B.S.
You think if I am not allowed to come in here and say that, that the recruits we do get are so stupid that they don’t or would not see it on their own.
That I should support this crappy excuse of a “coaching staff” because it is a TOUGH YEAR you tell me. Yeah 11 arrests and 2 NCAA suspensions for multiple games each with possible sanctions of VACATED win over the vols and over La Lafayette in a season which then probably will read 1-6 to-date after 5 losses last year and 4 losses the 2006 season and 3 losses against the only 3 teams we played in 2008 with NO SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME appearances even after 2005 is a TOUGH YEAR to endure this season.
Even tougher when you honestly look at our recruiting and discipline through the eyes of
HERSCHEL WALKER.

Altamahawdawg,
No big deal that we lose the 14 seniors and 4-5 juniors off a team that in fact has LOST already 9 games last year and this year so far.
You’re the 1 who said we would win the national championship in 2011; you’re the 1 who said that Joe Cox threw the football as well as anyone especially the long ball with our 17 interceptions last year; and you’re the 1 who said that Christian LeMay would not be an issue at all getting past UGA Admissions with your list of excuses for a guy having sex with a 14-year old in a classroom in front of the Principal not even playing and now CMR has ANOTHER who also is not playing his senior year both assured by CMR that their scholarships are waiting just like he did to Michael Grant.
You’re also the 1 Altamahawdawg, who said here that we did not recruit well 2009 and before; and, I presume you are less than satisfied with the recruiting 2010 and what it looks like for 2011, right ?
But, with their lack of effort – let’s tell them how great they are going to be – ALL IN JAIL.
I take Herschel Walker’s approach – sorry to disagree with your approach Altamahawdawg.
We are a football program OUT OF CONTROL on the field with poor coaching staff and off the field with the poor coaching staff poorly recruiting in this great state.
So, no sir; I like Herschel Walker do not see this football program heading up next year losing these players. We haven’t recruited well and you cannot name me the recruits you think are going to step in, not get arrested, so effort, be in shape, and win.
You’re satisfied Altamahawdawg, and Herschel Walker and I are NOT.

If you are asking me about why I say our graduation will not spell a worse season, I would say:
Offense:
Center, losing back up C. Davis.
Jr B. Jones is the starter now, C. Burnette is the future.
Guards, Starters and backupss return, including Frosh K. Gates who seems to be a pretty good answer in his very first game.
Tackles,Losing the 1 starter C. Boling, returning the other starter Sturvdivant, backed up by several, including the future starter B. Benidict.
QB. Returning starter. 99.9% of us believe he will improved next year.
RB: returning all depth.
FB: We’ll need to replace.
WR generic. Losing Durham. Let’s assume we lose AJ, although I have heard some comments that put that at less than certain.
Returning T. King, Troup, Wooten, Brown, Gray. some other less known.
Special teams we lose nobody of concequence at any aspect.
Defense:
Line, we lose the one starter Dobbs. Everybody else is back. Tyson, Gaithers are the keys to next year. Jones, Morant come to mind as depth. Need to recruit better, but CERTAINLY not taking a step back due to graduation here.
LB geneeric. Losing Gamble and Dent. Returning back up Washington, Gilliard. Houston Probably back too. Robibnson, Dowtin. Waiting on for Samuel, and Stripling to arrive in shape. And somebody named Jarvis.
DB: Losing Cuff who is has already relenquished his starting spot to Commings.
So to review, basically no net losses except, We need a FB, And one of many WRs to step up.
The defense as a WHOLE will be in the second year which is pretty much accepted as fact the big inprovement year. Returing one of the future SEC stars at QB. RB, kickers, DB, all back.
Now, tell me where I am wrong. You said THIS team woud win the SEC east (somehow ignoring that fact that you said it would do so with a horrible offense) and the defense would be the “best in 3 decades”. And then tank next year becasue of the HUGE losses in both seniors and juniors. I said they would lose a few games this year and be better next year. Who seems to be able to back thier point of view up a bit more.

Here is a some good points that I did not miss.
“No room for Cam Newton but plenty of room for Zach Mettenberger and his 2 sexual battery GUILTY attacks of a coed. ”
See now, you need to talk to thsi guy who used to call himself BuLLdawg, because he said Mett was all about having Mett on the team.
“There is nothing fluid about the QB debate. Zach Mettenberger out-performed Aaron Murray in all 3 scrimmages in a row. If you cannot see that he is going to be drafted in the NFL Draft, that is your problem Tim. You have gushed about little average speed poor arm poor decision-making no experience lining up under Center Aaron Murray and now that he clearly is not # 1, you hang on to it’s still fluid.”
“Quit making your excuses for David Greene and Aaron Murray. Those are NOT NFL Quarterbacks. Zach Mettenberger is.”
“So, while you all sit there and jump on the Zach Mettenberger bandwagon, I point out that I said all along that he should have been the QB last year.”
Of cource he also said that we completely wasted a scholarship on Mettenberger, a player who coulnd’t throw a comeplte pass unless it was to a defended.
Maybe Bulldog Joe and BuLLdawg need to get together and figure out which way it is. Ask the Messenger, see if he can decide.

Any athlete on a scholarship who is arrested and convicted should lose their scholarship. Our tax dollars should NOT be going to support irresponsible athletes who cannot control themselves. Coach Richt has a huge hand in setting the stage for what is acceptable behavior and what is not. If Richt cannot instill the proper values in his players–he is the wrong person for the leadership role. As a GA alumnae it is embarrassing to have Georgia players arrest record displayed on national TV.

I think that all you folks putting the responsibility for this team’s anctics have completly forgotten that the previous AD, the real “Leader” of the whole athletic program, certainly showed the way! What an embarrasment for UGA. The football team’s sense of entitlement shows their immaturity, something that is fairly normal for 18-22 year olds.
Thanks for the opportunity to sound off. Sorry for any grammatical errors on all you English majors out there!
