Richt’s deal with Dogs: Win turnover battle, grow beards

ATHENS – Georgia’s football team is looking scruffier these days. And that’s a good thing, coach Mark Richt explained Tuesday.

Richt, who normally forbids beards on the team, made a deal with his players: When the Bulldogs win the turnover battle in a game, shaving is optional the following week.

And after winning the turnover battle the past two weeks, 3-0 against Tennessee and 2-0 against Vanderbilt, beards are sprouting all around the locker room.

“I hope they are the nastiest looking bunch in America by the end of the year,” Richt said.

Richt actually made the same offer to his team last year, but no one noticed because the Bulldogs lost the turnover battle for the season by a whopping 28-12 margin, ranking 118th out of 120 major-college teams.

“Unfortunately, we were clean-shaven all year,” Richt said. “This year, they’re getting a little furrier.”

All that fur will have to be shaved after any game in which the Bulldogs are on the losing end of the turnover margin, Richt said.  And what if the team breaks even in turnovers in a given game? In that case, Richt said, the beards can stay if the team is ahead for the year in turnover margin. Georgia has an 11-7 advantage in turnovers so far this season, thanks to the 5-0 edge the past two weeks.

“It’s just something we’re doing for a little motivation,” said scruffy-chinned linebacker Akeem Dent.

Fullback Fred Munzenmaier and tight end Artie Lynch appear to have the fastest-growing beards on the team, according to several players.

Turns out, though, Richt’s rule isn’t always the final word on the subject.

“I got a little fuzzy last week,” quarterback Aaron Murray said, “but my mom got mad at me so I had to clean it up before the game. She likes it clean-cut. I’ve got to make Mommy happy because my birthday is coming up and I want some good gifts.”

Besides, Murray admitted, he can grow a beard only in patches.  “I’m still a teenager,” said the redshirt freshman quarterback, who will turn 20 on Nov. 10.

Senior wide receiver Kris Durham is among the players growing a beard, which he calls “icing on the cake” compared to the larger benefit of winning the turnover battle: “It is going to help us win games.”

Turnovers have been a serious problem for Georgia in the past couple of seasons. Critical fumbles figured largely in losses to South Carolina, Mississippi State and Colorado this season. And the problem was at its worst in the second half of last season’s loss to Kentucky, when the Bulldogs committed four turnovers to blow a 20-6 halftime lead and lose 34-27. Georgia plays at Kentucky on Saturday, hoping to win the turnover battle this time and keep the beards growing.

A beard is what motivates the morons over there? Not the posibility of a title or winning a game, or furthering your career or playing time or fill in the blank, but a week’s worth of hair on the face?

There are WAY more problems than dawgnation thought. Richt should tell his players that they will have to shave if they get arrested. Maybe that will motivate them to not break the law. You would think that jail would be enough motivation, but apparently not. HAIR

“Push away from the keyboard”…..

Some of you should heed that advice. The arrests are being addressed. The coaching is adapting. We get it, Georgia is pretty bad this year. And to be honest, those of you calling Georgia fans rednecks or inbreds or leghumpers, have you ever been to a football game in the Southeast? Serious question. The coeds are gorgeous, the men wear Polo shirts, and it’s generally a high class atmosphere. We’re all Southern (Tech, UF, Auburn, etc), calling Georgia fans rednecks, is the pot calling the kettle black. Get some new material. It’s tired.

I’m glad for the players of today. Back in the days of yore, HC’s demanded a certain appearance from their teams. No individuality. Football was akin to Basic Trng. Water on the practice field was for wussies, a concussion was just a little headache, salt tablets came in jars of thousands, sex before a game drained the man ( Vince Lombardi ) and hair of any noticeable length was unheard of. While the rest may still hold true to many coaches ( the sex thing is controlled by putting the team in lockdown on the night before a game ), I’m glad to see most of them let up on the hair issues. If you can play, play…

Always amusing on the comments from the nimrods who hate on the ‘Dawgs and what they do no matter what. They can’t help but chime in with their little two cents. Get a friggin’ life. Who CARES if it’s a gimmick?!? Great coaches have used them forever. Vince Dooley did. Erk Russell did. Frank Howard did. Shug Jordan did. Phil Fulmer did. Even Steve Spurrier did when he came to FL.
These are very young men at UGA, Auburn, AL, etc., not seasoned veterans of the NFL. College leans heavily on the emotion and right motivation. It’s why some coaches can do well there and others are more cut out for the pros. Gimmick away. It’s only “dumb” if it doesn’t work, and then it’s not really dumb. Just try something else for that little edge. Like Durham said, this (beard thing) was just “icing.” Think it’s the primary reason why he’s playing so well? Of course not, but it helps–if even a little bit. Sometimes you win by just a little bit.

Winning (and playing well and with discipline) certainly seems to change people’s perspectives.
Lose a couple of games and any player with long hair or dreadlocks hanging out is a “thug”
Win a couple of games and players having long hair and scruffy beards are “having fun” and “showing individuality”.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with 18 – 22 year old kids growing their hair long and beards. Hopefully people will keep that in mind if and when they next lose a game.

I’ll put Murray’s toughness up against any other QB in the country right now. He’s taken some shots and gotten right up. In fact he really needs to learn how to slide or he’s going to get knocked out. He’s having a great start to his career, though. He’s the top ranked freshman in the nation in passing efficiency right now.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?

Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 45 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

And tech…. where do i start, you guys have a weak conference, your conference champ might go 8-4 in the SEC. We Run this state and once again, we will show you. you guys are really big talkers, but truly do not play the way you talk. And speaking about the beard issue, what does it matter to you? CMR is doing his job. COACHING!!!! it involves doing what gets Your guys attention, if this helps them then, So be it. he is trying to give incentives for his players to want to play hard and get the big plays. just because you do not like it does not mean anyone else or the players have to agree with you. football is played one week at a time and whatever gets these kids fired up to play the game is a good thing. IF YOU ARE A FAN OF ANOTHER SCHOOL ON HERE TALKING SH!T, YOU REALLY LOOK LIKE B!TCH3S. GO DAWGS!!!

Amen BossDawg60!!! Like I said, Coach Richt is putting some fun back to an already dismal record but he’s also making the team play harder.

Filthy dawgs.

Next if they win Richt will let them lick their, well you know.

No chance of that till after the Idaho State game.

I’m sure Richt is just following the best practices of Saban, Meyer and other SEC champ coaches to motivate his team to win. Cause getting you butt whipped by Bama at home and a 2-9 record against the Gators just ain’t enough. Right?

It’s no mystery as to why this is drawing so much attention by all the trolls. T/O have been as big of a reason for the losses in the past few years, and any other single factor, so anything to draw additional attention to that would not be good news. We get it. Particularly given the recent improvement in this area.

Did we turn the ball over in those losses, 38? If so, and I am assuming that you would want to lower the chances of losing additional games, then reducing T/O would seem to be a good thing, wouldnt it? Then how would an internal mechanism to bring that one simple acheivable goal more attention, be a bad thing? For a Dawg fan I mean.

If, just them wanting to win was all it ever took to produce a good football team, there are probably 4 dozen rituals and practises that could be dispensed with on very campus in America. And there would be 119 undefeated teams every year. Are you seriously suggesting that Meyer, And Saban do not employ a single internal motivational device, that reaches beyong,”hey remember, when somebody scored more than we did”?

Oh man.. not another strategy that will lift there spirits and get them to do their job… WOW.. what coaching.. Is this what now qualifies as “Coaching one’s butt off? Really how bout we try using a different colored jersey. I don’t know …. Black ones maybe….. Oh wait.. that gimmic failed. .. How about Black Helmets.. oh wait… that one failed too.

Richt’s run out of ideas and its time to run him out too. and he can take Bobo the Clown with him.

AltamahaDawg, aren’t you special for being a fan of Richt’s gimmicks?

See, Meyer and Saban DO employ internal motivational tactics. For example, Meyer posted pics of the Dawgs jumping around in the end zone for AN ENTIRE YEAR after they lost in 2007. Hence, it helped them whip our butts 49-10 in 2008.

Wearing black helmets and letting the boys grow a beard if they don’t mess up the T/O battle is not exactly on the same level of effectiveness as Meyer’s tactic, see? I’m just saying that we should wear our regular uniforms and make the T/O battle part of the fundamental responsibilities of our team…and not make these things into some silly reward.

Discipline wins games. Not gimmicks.

I am of the opinion that Richt shouldn’t be dictating whether or not these guys shave in the first place. Let me get this straight, some have been allowed to run around with hair extension dreds hanging out the back of their helmets, but other guys can’t grow a beard? Does one look worse than the other? As long as your facial hair doesn’t get in the way of your play execution, who cares? Aren’t these players adults?
His whole policy on beards was, and is, stupid. We aren’t the New York Yankees.

So, that would be an affimative on anything to bring attention to reducing T/O’s being a good thing from a Dawg fan’s perspective?

BTW. I was at the 2007 and 2008 game. Trust me. It wasn’t the pictures.

I know for a fact that Richt has hung pictures on wall for motivation, like that is some new brilliant ploy. I seem to recall a certain picture of the tech guy holding the hedges in his teeth being mentioned last year. Did that have the same level of effectiveness? Since we proceeded to whip thier butts. Or is it “silly” if Richt does it but not when Meyer does.

BTW, Uf has worn a variety of unis over time, and teams all across the country break out different ones all the time. It’s no more a “gimmick” than wearing anything but a solid white uni with no identifying marks would be. Because uniforms themsleves are “gimmicks”. As are school colors. As is having a Bulldog procliamed the official mascot of a college football team.

Maybe you people should stop being haters, and start helping motivate you team, motivation is used in many walks of life, home, school, church, young youth groups, and work places. I think it’s a great idea to use motivation for the team. But as always your old farts and a@@es are so negative, that really you should go find another team. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE BELIEVERS ARE THERE FOR YOU.

Does the fact that Tim failed to mention that this wasn’t even a new thing, actually put into place last year, make the drama queen (or negative old fart, thank you georgiagirl) comments just that much more petty?

Here’s another uniform gimmick…convict stripes to go with the beards and arrests. Of course, you’ve already changed mascots, and I’m not talking about Bruce. The University of Georgia Possums: Play dead at home and get killed on the road!
