A redshirt season for Samuel? More playing time for Ogletree?
5:00 am October 19, 2010, by Tim Tucker
A couple of items from Mark Richt’s weekly radio show Monday night:
- Richt said junior linebacker Richard Samuel, sidelined all season with a knee injury, will practice in pads Tuesday for the first time this fall. That doesn’t necessarily signal that Samuel, a converted tailback, will be playing in a game anytime soon. “He did not redshirt his first or second year, so there’s a chance, going into Game 8 now, I guess it is, we may choose to redshirt him and get him two more solid seasons,” Richt said. Samuel told reporters after practice Monday that redshirting probably would be best for him at this point, if the coaches decide to go that route.
- Richt agreed with a caller about the importance of hard-hitting safeties like former Georgia stars Thomas Davis and Greg Blue. “It makes a huge difference, and I’m searching for that, still,” Richt said. “I think we’re all searching for that. I do think we have guys who are good tacklers, but do we have guys that will really devastate you when they hit you?” He believes freshman safety Alec Ogletree will prove to be such a player.
“I’ve got a sneaking suspicion,” Richt said, “we’ve got one on the horizon in No 9, Ogletree. I really think that kid is the kind of the guy that can make those kind of hits. And sometimes when one guy does it, it becomes very contagious for the rest of them. So I’m challenging big ‘Tree and the rest of those guys to make those kind of hits.”
Ogletree is “starting to work his way into the lineup” and will be getting “a lot more reps,” Richt said. “He’s proved that he’s not going to make any more mistakes than any of those other guys. He’s got to the point where he understands it enough the coaches have a comfort level to let him play more.”

If we can make it through one summer without any arrests or suspensions we could have a special year.Obviously we have not been focused on football these past couple of years and it shows on the field with the slow starts.

I think part of the D’s problems is that the safeties are to worried about hard hits. They have poor tackling form and take bad angles. Jakar is a perfect example. If he would come up and wrap his arms around a player and drive them into the ground, it would be much more effective then flying in with a shoulder hit and bouncing off backs like Lattimore. We need safeties that can hit hard at right times but are more worried about disrupting plays anyway they can. Palamalou is a perfect example of that.

romedawg,
The arrested Dawgs aren’t any less focused than the Dawgs of past decades. The difference is that the Athens police are so on top of things that they catch every single crime. I think guys used to get away with a lot more, especially in Athens where there is a tough crackdown on underage drinking. Also, according to one anonymous NFL player, taking cash from agents has been done by many players for a long time, and 99% of them got away with it. I’m not excusing what AJ Green did; I’m just saying that he’s as “focused” on winning as the guys at pretty much every school have been for a long time.

“Things went very well,” said Barry Sanders, Jr.. “I really enjoyed myself. It was my first visit to Alabama. The stadium can definitely compare to NFL stadiums. I really like the set up.
“I got a chance to tour the facilities after the game. The facilities are pretty new. I saw the championship trophy and Ingram’s Heisman trophy. I saw the Hall of Fame area which was really cool. I saw the training room. Everything was really nice.”
The elite junior recruit enjoyed his first visit to Tuscaloosa and plans a return trip.
“I think Alabama is a great place,” said Sanders. “They have some really good people there. I was around a lot of nice people when I was there sitting in the stands. People are so polite. I really look forward to going back.”

I agree with the commenter above the tackling fundamentals are what’s really important. The safeties need to focus on wrapping guys up. If they do that consistently, then some of those tackles will naturally have enough speed to de-cleat the opponent. We don’t need to see any more of these hit-a-guy-hard-with-a-shoulder attempts.

“The stadium can definitely compare to NFL stadiums.” Ha! Has Barry Sanders Jr. been to an NFL stadium?!? The biggest college football programs (including Alabama) have bigger stadiums than the NFL. College football also has great marching bands, great tailgating, pumped up student sections that stand on their feet for the entire game, fight chants cheered in unison, etc. The college football gameday atmosphere is SUPERIOR to the NFL.

Mark Richt, I could not agree more. Those quotes from the coach scare me actually. If a big hit happens, great, but the last thing we need is a bunch of headhunters in the secondary getting burned, missing tackles trying to make that “wow” hit, rather than a good form tackle.

Dawgs get better and better each week and will smash the bugs. I’ll enjoy that but it’s a shame that UGA has to start at ground zero at the beginning of every year. I have been fortunate enough to watch Alec and his brother, Zander, play football & basketball since they were 7. These are two class kids. I have seen numerous games where Alec has forced opposing running backs to change the way they run. After 2-3 hits, they start tiptoeing and get timid. Get the kid on the field and you will see the results. He is a beast. 6′3″ and 220 lbs. at 18 with the desire to do damage…and he does wrap up! His brother is a gamer and possesses all the intangibles good coaches utilize. He loves to block and can catch a pass coming out of the backfield. Both of you young men make Coweta proud. Go Dawgs!

On-board and not on-board at the same time. Thomas Davis and Greg Blue were great NOT because they hit so hard but because they hit hard ANR wrapped up. Our D has had plety of opportunities to wrap up and bring someone down (Marcus Lattimore) and instead went for the knock-down. Knock downs look good, but against a decent back or WR they simply equate to additional yards after contact. Teach these guys to wrap up and let the second, third, and fourth guy knock the cr@p out him. THAT is what the Junkyard Dawgs were all about.

Also look at the numbers the Ryan Mallett has put up for the year. Murray’s numbers are almost identical to his. Mallett has accomplished this with three huge WR’s. I really think that we have something special with Murray!

Do you honestly think that UGA will fire the 5th active winning coach in the USA after a bad season–with a freshman QB and entirely new defensive scheme? You are out of your mind. Richt is here for as long as he chooses. And a lot of people are pretty happy about that. So, invest your energy in something other than FIRE COACH RICHT rantings. He is the coach. Why does everyone want a Greg Blue / Thomas Davis type safety that will take your head off. I’ve played on all levels and would much rather have a safety that can cover space and make a solid tackle when needed. A big hard hitting safety is no good when a reciever blows by the corner and the safety can’t get over and cover. Any good offensive cordinator will not call plays for their reciever to get blown up by a big hard hitting safety, but will call plays to put him at a disadvantage, mostly in coverage. Look at college and the NFL, you see some hard hitting guys, but those are not the ones getting all of the picks. I would give anything to get a Sean Jones type than a Greg Blue/Thomas Davis type.

Rambo was going to be a player until he got knocked out against Auburn last year making one of those hits. Now he’s afraid to hit anyone. He’s become entirely too passive. I say put #9 in there NOW. He can learn the position over the next few games. He will hit someone…hopefully before the whistle. UGA is in need of a leader on the D side of the ball. Pollack was the last leader and no one has stepped up. Recruit guys that over achieve like Kirby Smart, John Little, Terry Hoage, Jeff Sanchez, Billy Mitchell, Tommy Thurston, John Brantley, Rennie Curran, Thomas Davis or Odel Thurman. Okay…maybe not like Odel.

Focus or not, overzealous APD or not, UGA has had 12 brain injuries this season that have kept players off the field for at least one game. When you start with a roster of 85 and really have about 60-65 guys that you are counting on to have an impact on the team…. losing 12 of them for part of the season to brain injuries on top of the normal physical injuries is a lot to overcome. Based on the four losses thus far this season, it is too much to overcome.

Richt has built up good will, that is true. However, if he has a 5 or 6 loss season this year followed by 4 next year, there will be an awful lot of noise in the system to quote the Zooker.

I-Dog, you are right. It is likely that CMR can stay a long time at UGA. His winning percentage is almost off the chart. It is sadly humorous to read all the short-sighted comments from fans who actually believe that CMR will be fired. It certainly will not happen this year. If he is 500 or below next year then perhaps he will be near the end but even then I think he gets another season. In fact, I think at least–he finishes out his contract and it is likely that he will be extended into the distant future. Lots of folks would like to have CMR. There are rumors at South Carolina that when SS retires this year that CMR is on their short list. Any program would be glad to get CMR. I just hope we can hold him here. He seems to like Athens and wants to retire here so that is good for all true UGA fans.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Logan’s Run,
Winning percentage is not the “be all, end all” in determining whether a coach stays or goes. Granted, Richt has a great overall record, but his record against the SEC East over the last few years has stunk, and that is where it matters the most. I don’t think they would fire him this year either, but don’t fool yourself into thinking he can’t be replaced. Ohio State found Jim Tressel to replace John Cooper after it was obvious that he would not get them to that next level, and that turned out ok for them. To “Rogers”: Before you start bashing UGA, check 3 names and their subsequent academic history of these ex Tech players: Stephon Marbury, Kenny Anderson, Tyrone Sorrells. Now you still want to claim that you truly have “student-athletes”?

Those of us who watched Ogletree at Newnan High go both ways and do superhuman feats can’t wait to see him get more reps at UGA. The guy is a freak & pratcically singlehandedly kept them undefeated for two years.

Big hitting is what has Georgia playing so poorly in these last few years. They get out of position trying to get on ESPN highlight films. The offense use to key off of Blue. He was so determine to knock someone’s block off he would cheat to a direction he thought the play was being run. In the Sugar Bowl you could see West Virginia keying at the line of scrimmage to where Blue was, and running plays according. WV won and more team saw how they won on film. That was the last good season for Georgia under Richt.

This guy Rogers pulls the same tricks everyday. He posts the same crap and then comes back with other names like Harry the Hat or in this case Dawgturd and agrees with himself.
Dawgturd..”Actually I think Rogers made a lot of good points.”
Then he comes back on and tries to deny it. Hey moron, your aren’t fooling anybody!
Meanwhile, he is probably back to making his human skin dress so he can fancy himself up like a Georgia cheerleader and flaunt it in front of his bedroom mirror. “It puts the lotion on it’s back!”

Blue and Davis were excellent safeties, not doubt because they knew how to wrap-up WHILE laying the wood on somebody. However, from my perspective the best recent (20 years) safety was Sean Jones – great ball skills as well as being a fantastic tackler.
Of course, “old” guys like Terry Hoage and Jake Scott were pretty good too…

richt can’t evaluate talent stevie wonder could have told u that alec O. was a good safety and better than the ones we have so why has it taken richt 7 games to find out … what a waste of talent……..

Yep – should have been playing Ogletree all year at safety.
In fact while Green was out he should have put him in at WR. – played both throughout HS.

A couple of points:
The idiot posting today as “Rogers” posts the same thing day after day on various blogs under a number of different names – easy to do when you can copy and paste. Ignore the troll.
Kenny Anderson received a bachelor’s degree this year. It wasn’t from GT and it was 19 years after he left after his sophomore year for the NBA but you have to congratulate him for perserverance.

“It’s what Meyer and Saban would have done.”
But that’s the problem. Richt isn’t even remotely near the level of the top coaches in the SEC.
=================================
Meyer was 9-3 before Tebow………….what has he done witho0ut Tebow….its not Meyer morons
.
Saban? Saban has a 2 win season….Richt has never finished with less than 8 wins
.
Saban has four 6 win seasons…………Richt has never finished with less than 8 wins
.
Saban has five 7 win seasons…………Richt has never finished with less than 8 wins
.
Out of 15 years of being HC Saban has finished top ten 4 times………..Richt has finished top ten 6 of nine years
.
So Saban sucked for 11 years and was lucky 3 (the 4th was good but when you lose ur last 2 games and one to a mid major its not good) and he is better than Richt who has had one year of only 8 wins but has averaged 10 wins a year since being a head coach,,,,,are you stupid?

If CR wants to see mega hits to show as an example to his linebackers and secondary, just have them view the smash in your face tackles Murray has taken from other teams. How he is able to continue after some of these tackles shows a toughness most quarterbacks don’t have.

patrick , True. I think it’s funny how everyone (almost everyone) was talking up Meyer 4-weeks ago, and now???
I will say that Saban knows how to recruit better –or should I say evaluate talent better. Meyer, on the other hand, gets a lot of fast little guys with the exception Tebow. Now that Tebow is gone & the (real) coach of FL went to MissSt, we all see Meyer for what he truely is; an average at best coach. No wonder he cried last yr, went to the hospital & quit all within 3 days.

Little, Meyer has been successful everywhere he’s been. Bowling Green, Utah, and UF. The man thought he was dying last year, that would probably snap anyones attention to what’s important. Without your health nothing else really matters. Word is he has been somewhat distracted and medicated for anxiety. It’s obvious he’s not as intense as he has been in the past. Personally I wish him the best. If we’re going to beat the Gators, I would like to see them at their best.

Didn’t read all the postings but I will say after living in Newnan for the past three years and watching Ogletree play football here opposing receivers best beware. If anybody has doubts just check out the high lights on youtube. I know anybody can put together a high light real but this kid did it every game.

# 09 Ogletree did play running back in HS. Why not let him play running back in some special situations?
I am forever tainted in my thinking about King and W. Ealey. These two are not folks that you can count on. It is the way that it is gang. Ealey has cost UGA three games lately, with KY in 09 and SC and MSU in 10. Who needs him? Caleb is not a SEC type of back eiither and he to cost us the Colorado game, along with Walsh, blowing a 40 yarder after running his mouth to Kevin Butlder in pre game warm ups that he was hitting them 70 yds.
UGa needs to recruit 3 men that CAN run the ball IN the SEC. We are going to be in the exact same boat in 2011 and w.o. AJ. This coaching staff has simply failed in their job, which is to sign one or two good backs per year. Dontavious Jackson would not have played much and he is blown out anyway. Another Coaching staff failure.
AD Mcgarity must recognize that UGA’s issues have been about 4 years in the making. I am sure that he knows that, having viewed UGA and their probs from the box at Jax. He knows. He knows.
Coaches talk too and this is partly why Richt could not get a guy to some to UGA as the D co ordinator. Word is out …………Richt is simply too soft and he is distracted with his faith work. He needs to do that full time.

exactly…. richt is to soft… everybody knows it
look at the UGA players in the nfl lately who played under richt…. moreno, stafford etc, all are hurt or did not make the cut… physical conditioning has never been a strong point at UGA. we recruit undersized men. king and ealey are both undersized.. stand them next to the rbs at alabama and you will see a difference
lets look at next year… UGA will not have aj green, no chris durham.. and there will be no fb for the rb, both munzi and chapas are both seniors…… who will we pass to and who will block for the sorry rbs that we have??

I am not surprised by the comments of CMR as this only confirms what I have been saying for the last three years about the lack of coaching fundamentals by CMR and staff. The focus has to be on wrapping up, and that is why we see that ugliness on saturdays. Remember the strong safety last year hit some opponents who never went down, or out of bound, and instead gained several yards after contact.

I tell ya i am so sick of people over hyping uga plus alec ogletree he is overrated the only reason he had tackles like he did in high school was because newnan never played tough teams in the division until it got to the playoffs he couldn’t even tackle the running backs at camden county during the playoffs at all thats why they never got far like i said this boy i OVERRATED!!!!!!!!!!!! ..

Rogers, if you’ve got such a great life, how did you find the time to bless us with an attempt to hide your inferiority complex with 380 words of drivel? As soon as Dumbaryass dropped that 4th down pass I knew Tech fans would resort back to the good old days of puffing out their chest and bragging about their allegedly superior institution. Enjoy your delusion because if you think your team doesn’t sport the same dumbasses ours does you’re deluding yourself. Atlanta police just have better things to do than pull over black guys for driving with a broken tag light. Good luck. I’m detecting you’re bracing yourself for another loss next month. That very well may be, but don’t sit around and think the same old put downs are still relevant.
