A redshirt season for Samuel? More playing time for Ogletree?

A couple of items from Mark Richt’s weekly radio show Monday night:

  • Richt said junior linebacker Richard Samuel, sidelined all season with a knee injury, will practice in pads Tuesday for the first time this fall. That doesn’t necessarily signal that Samuel, a converted tailback, will be playing in a game anytime soon.  “He did not redshirt his first or second year, so there’s a chance, going into Game 8 now, I guess it is, we may choose to redshirt him and get him two more solid seasons,” Richt said. Samuel told reporters after practice Monday that redshirting probably would be best for him at this point, if the coaches decide to go that route.
  • Richt agreed with a caller about the importance of hard-hitting safeties like former Georgia stars Thomas Davis and Greg Blue.  “It makes a huge difference, and I’m searching for that, still,” Richt said. “I think we’re all searching for that. I do think we have guys who are good tacklers, but do we have guys that will really devastate you when they hit you?” He believes freshman safety Alec Ogletree will prove to be such a player.

“I’ve got a sneaking suspicion,” Richt said, “we’ve got one on the horizon in No 9, Ogletree. I really think that kid is the kind of the guy that can make those kind of hits. And sometimes when one guy does it, it becomes very contagious for the rest of them. So I’m challenging big ‘Tree and the rest of those guys to make those kind of hits.”

Ogletree is “starting to work his way into the lineup” and will be getting “a lot more reps,” Richt said.  “He’s proved that he’s not going to make any more mistakes than any of those other guys. He’s got to the point where he understands it enough the coaches have a comfort level to let him play more.”

I-Dog, you are right. It is likely that CMR can stay a long time at UGA. His winning percentage is almost off the chart. It is sadly humorous to read all the short-sighted comments from fans who actually believe that CMR will be fired. It certainly will not happen this year. If he is 500 or below next year then perhaps he will be near the end but even then I think he gets another season. In fact, I think at least–he finishes out his contract and it is likely that he will be extended into the distant future. Lots of folks would like to have CMR. There are rumors at South Carolina that when SS retires this year that CMR is on their short list. Any program would be glad to get CMR. I just hope we can hold him here. He seems to like Athens and wants to retire here so that is good for all true UGA fans.

But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do–
He would yell, ‘To hell with Georgia!’ like his daddy used to do.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Bobby Bowden’s winning percentage was pretty high, too, LR. Richt is 2-9 agains the Gators and his conference record is not nearly as good as his overall record (thanks to the Louisiana-Lafayettes of the world). How many more years of loosing to the Gators should we tolerate? Especially if we can’t beat them this year?

Logan’s Run,

Winning percentage is not the “be all, end all” in determining whether a coach stays or goes. Granted, Richt has a great overall record, but his record against the SEC East over the last few years has stunk, and that is where it matters the most. I don’t think they would fire him this year either, but don’t fool yourself into thinking he can’t be replaced. Ohio State found Jim Tressel to replace John Cooper after it was obvious that he would not get them to that next level, and that turned out ok for them. Richt needs to beat Kentucky this week or it’s gonna get ugly.

Is that why you just wrote us a freaking book about what a bunch of kids do on Saturday afternoons you effing moron?

Here’s the Cliff Notes version of Roger’s boring book that no one has time to read: Hi, my name is Roger. I’m a bitter Techie that is jealous of all the publicity and attention that UGA gets while my defending ACC Chumps are relegated to noon games on ESPN360. UGA owns my soul and because their football team wipes the damn floor with us like it was their job year after year after year, I’ll pull out the sore loser “I don’t even care” excuse like the punk kid that always loses neighborhood pick up basketball games and then goes and tells mommy about how unfair the game was. That’s Techies in a nutshell and we are proud of what excuse making bitter sore loser crybabies we are. UGA has never beaten us in football. We simply let them win because we prefer calculus over football victories. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Thanks Roger for wasting everyone’s time.

Big hitting is what has Georgia playing so poorly in these last few years. They get out of position trying to get on ESPN highlight films. The offense use to key off of Blue. He was so determine to knock someone’s block off he would cheat to a direction he thought the play was being run. In the Sugar Bowl you could see West Virginia keying at the line of scrimmage to where Blue was, and running plays according. WV won and more team saw how they won on film. That was the last good season for Georgia under Richt.

Blue and Davis were excellent safeties, not doubt because they knew how to wrap-up WHILE laying the wood on somebody. However, from my perspective the best recent (20 years) safety was Sean Jones – great ball skills as well as being a fantastic tackler.

Of course, “old” guys like Terry Hoage and Jake Scott were pretty good too…

Kenny Anderson received a bachelor’s degree this year. It wasn’t from GT and it was 19 years after he left after his sophomore year for the NBA but you have to congratulate him for perserverance.

“It’s what Meyer and Saban would have done.”

But that’s the problem. Richt isn’t even remotely near the level of the top coaches in the SEC.
=================================
Meyer was 9-3 before Tebow………….what has he done witho0ut Tebow….its not Meyer morons
.
Saban? Saban has a 2 win season….Richt has never finished with less than 8 wins
.
Saban has four 6 win seasons…………Richt has never finished with less than 8 wins
.
Saban has five 7 win seasons…………Richt has never finished with less than 8 wins
.
Out of 15 years of being HC Saban has finished top ten 4 times………..Richt has finished top ten 6 of nine years
.
So Saban sucked for 11 years and was lucky 3 (the 4th was good but when you lose ur last 2 games and one to a mid major its not good) and he is better than Richt who has had one year of only 8 wins but has averaged 10 wins a year since being a head coach,,,,,are you stupid?

If CR wants to see mega hits to show as an example to his linebackers and secondary, just have them view the smash in your face tackles Murray has taken from other teams. How he is able to continue after some of these tackles shows a toughness most quarterbacks don’t have.

patrick , True. I think it’s funny how everyone (almost everyone) was talking up Meyer 4-weeks ago, and now???
I will say that Saban knows how to recruit better –or should I say evaluate talent better. Meyer, on the other hand, gets a lot of fast little guys with the exception Tebow. Now that Tebow is gone & the (real) coach of FL went to MissSt, we all see Meyer for what he truely is; an average at best coach. No wonder he cried last yr, went to the hospital & quit all within 3 days.

Little, Meyer has been successful everywhere he’s been. Bowling Green, Utah, and UF. The man thought he was dying last year, that would probably snap anyones attention to what’s important. Without your health nothing else really matters. Word is he has been somewhat distracted and medicated for anxiety. It’s obvious he’s not as intense as he has been in the past. Personally I wish him the best. If we’re going to beat the Gators, I would like to see them at their best.
