Murray, Jones honored by SEC; Murray top freshman in nation in pass efficiency

Georgia piled up 547 yards and 43 points against Vanderbilt on Saturday, and two UGA players were honored today by the SEC for their parts in the rout.

Quarterback Aaron Murray was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week, and center Ben Jones was named the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week for the first time since 2008.

Murray, a redshirt freshman, had a season-high 287 yards passing (15-for-24, two touchdowns, no interceptions) and a season-high 190.4 passing efficiency rating in the victory over Vandy. For the season, Murray’s pass efficiency mark of 157.2 ranks No. 18 in the nation –- and No. 1 among freshmen. Murray has thrown 12 touchdown passes and just three interceptions.

Jones, a junior, received the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honor after grading out at 83 percent overall, including 100 percent on pass plays, against Vanderbilt. He had a team-high 20 knockdown blocks, according to UGA statistics. Georgia allowed no sacks of Murray in the game and had a 37:15-22:45 advantage in time of possession.

Funny how all the skepticism was about Murray at the beginning of the year. The kid is the definition of a “Gamer” – he brings a different level of desire into games and performs better than at practice.

Gatorshane, you make a good point and it’s nice to see a comment from an opposing fan that is not bashing Georgia. To be honest, I still expect Florida to beat us. I think we’re certainly capable of beating them, but some years Georgia goes into Jacksonville like they have ZERO

Cam Newton scares the hayell outta me. Seems unfair that someone his size can still scramble so good. I’m just hoping to get out of Lexington alive after what I’ve seen from them. They beat SC and scare Auburn to death. Of course, they also made Florida’s offense look like Tebow was back. Wonder which KY team shows up this Saturday. Kudos to Murray and Jones, they played great! It’s a shame that Defenses don’t get the Glory that offensive players get, as a shutout in SEC play is a hell of an accomplishment (even for a Vandy). Grantham and the D rocked it this week!! Justin Houston better win an award this week, the guy is unstoppable and makes offenses have to scheme against him. Like Andre Ware mentioned during Saturday’s game, Murray needs to learn how to slide after making a good run. The lick he took from the Vandy defensive lineman could have been very costly. Overall, he’s playing outstanding football.

The defense will have its hands full stopping UK. But if they can win in Lexington the momentum will be good going into Jacksonville. Florida as this week off to regroup and recharge. But they’re playing flat.

Let’s hope UGA’s momentum continues and the Dawgs beat the swamp lizards!!

I thought i would never say this..Finally a back to back win. I think the pep talks by older great Georgia ball players is proving to be good and we need that for the remainder of the season. In addition to our guys on defense learning the scheme and getting more comfortable, i think the o-line is starting to realize they are decent up front. The backs are running hard and blocking extremely well. As long as we keep our tight ends involved in the game plan we will create mismatches in both skill groups(wr’s and te’s). Our defense is getting better, but in order to reach greatness we must stay fundamentally sound, make sure tackles and limit big plays in the passing game. Protect our young QB Murray so he can continue to play within our offensive system, let him be the dual threat that he is and make plays with his arm and feet. Coach Richt, Coach Grantham and Coach Bobo let’s win 1 play at a time 1 game at a time. We will reach greatness!!!

Murray has been the real deal all year long even in the losses. it looks like the coaches are finally letting him be the QB that he is.

As for it being dangerous to run the QB in the SEC, yeah Florida really sucked with that Qb who ran a lot for the previous 4 years. Murray cannot take the punishment Newton can since Murray is at least 5 inches shorter and 50 pounds lighter.

Remember Jared Larenzen (spelling is probably wrong) from Kentucky a few years back? He was huge, but immobile. The QBs now are a little smaller but so much more mobile.

I am a Georgia fan but remember that we have to play our remaining SEC games away from Samford Stadium. Kentucky at Kentucky, Florida in Jax, and Auburn at Auburn.

This team is coming on but so are most SEC teams. Players have gained game experience, and mistakes have been corrected. The challenge is now doing it on the road. Richt has a great road record but there will be less margin for error.

Auburn has won 3 close games with the super effort of Cam Newton but their defense sux big time. If Cam gets hurt they will go in the tank. Georgia will score on them but I don’t know if they can stop Cam’s running up the middle which is what S.C. did to Georgia. Kentucky is very good on offense and not bad on defense. UGA will have to control the game by running the ball and short passes. Kentucky is very hard to stop with their controlled offense. Miss State has shown that they have a pretty good defense and it was no fluke that they have a winning record.

We in Atlanta do this every time, a person has a good performance and we start attaching titles or position such as best, greatest, No.1, and when they don’t live up to the lofty expectations we write all the negatives about them. I’d say give the young man a chance to grow without the debate as to whether he is the greatest freshman in college. How does anyone know this to be true, do you see all the Freshmen at that position, do you see all the games?.
Last year some say The Falcons had the best Back up Quarterback in the NFL, was that true after the end of last season and is that still the case?
It was often times said that Jason Heyward was the best Rookie in Baseball was that true?
It was said that the Braves had the best starting Rotation and the best Bullpen in Baseball was that true.
I guess next year it will be said that Freeman is the best Rookie in Baseball and the best defensively at 1st Base.

I hate to dig up the past but I feel that I must when it comes to Murray. Stafford recieved so much attention that, while being a life long dawg fan, I felt was undeserved. Stafford was even said to be better than David Greene, who any UGA fan that watched Greene knows is not even close to the truth. However, Murray does remind me of Greene. While Stafford was a “gun slinger” QB both Greene and Murray are field generals who know how to win even when they are not at the top of their game. Let us not forget Stafford had Moreno and A.J. Green and he only beat FL once. Greene had to deal with getting into a rhythm and then be taken out for D.J. Shockley. I feel we once again have a true leader at QB and hope Murray doesn’t take an early out and leave for the NFL.

Ricky, the difference is that Some fans wanted to heap praise on Stafford before seeing him take his first snap. Murray has earned the respect over time.

Actually dawgfaced, the only thing proven is that the combination of AJ missing (allowing opposing teams to do whatever they want to) AND Murray first few games was not too good. Nobody knows what Murray would have been able to do in his first few even with AJ. Obviously it would have helped in a number of ways. We probably could have got away with Murray’s inexperience more so, but him not being certainly didn’t stall Murray from growing. heck, maybe he had to learn quicker. There is no reason to think that Murray’s progression is tied to AJ, and that he won’t continue to improve and be able to move the team better irrespective of if AJ is out there in the future. Again better with, obviously. Well more options at least.

I agree with Thirtyfour Cent – “Murray is a very good quarterback and apparently a class guy. Unfortunately he is playing for an undisciplined team of individuals and a clueless coach.”

And finally Aaron’s big brother, Josh, ex major league baseball player, takes the field.
Now, he’s a class act. Gave up a lot of money and walked on at UGA just to be with his little brother.
