Richt: King’s 2-game suspension reflects tougher penalties for arrests

(Updated 4 p.m.)

ATHENS — Caleb King, Georgia’s starting tailback in both of its victories this season, won’t play in the next two games because of his arrest for failure to appear in court to address a speeding ticket.

Coach Mark Richt on Tuesday suspended King for the two games, saying he hopes the punishment teaches a lesson to the tailback and other players.

In years past, a case such as King’s might have drawn a shorter suspension, if any at all. But with King the 11th UGA football player arrested this year, Richt acknowledged the two-game ban reflects a tougher approach to punishing players for off-field incidents.

“Oh yeah, no doubt about it,” Richt said. “But they knew that.”

King won’t play in Saturday’s home game against Vanderbilt or the Oct. 23 game at Kentucky. He’ll return for the Oct. 30 game against Florida in Jacksonville.

The 11 Georgia players arrested this year, on charges ranging from battery to public intoxication, have drawn varying penalties from Richt. Four of the players were dismissed from the team. Another decided to transfer after being suspended for six games. Three others got one-game suspensions.

The latest suspension came one day after King was arrested by Athens-Clarke County Police on a bench warrant issued by a judge in nearby Walton County. The warrant was for failing to appear at an August court date regarding a June speeding ticket, which cited King for traveling 76 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone on Highway 78.

“I expect all our players to take care of their responsibilities on and off the field,” Richt said. “When players don’t do that, it damages the reputation of the player, our team and our university. My goal is for Caleb to learn a lesson and for other players to learn from his experience.”

King’s penalty was double that drawn by fellow tailback Washaun Ealey, who was suspended for one game –- the season-opening victory over Louisiana-Lafayette –- after his late-August arrest for hit-and-run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license. At the time of Ealey’s arrest, there also was a bench warrant against him for failure to appear in court on speeding and vehicle registration charges.

Asked if King’s stiffer penalty reflects a tougher standard, Richt said: “Yes sir.” Asked if it reflects a need to send a message, Richt said: “Obviously.”

Although Richt emphasized that each player “has a responsibility to do the right thing,” the coach said he and athletic director Greg McGarity are having “an ongoing conversation” about ways to reduce the off-field problems. “I really have a lot of confidence that [McGarity] has some good ideas in that regard,” Richt said.

Already, Richt said, his staff is periodically checking to make sure players’ driver’s licenses are in good standing.  “We’ve been doing that monthly,” he said, “but now we are going to do it weekly.”

Richt said, however, that it would be almost impossible for the staff to know when a bench warrant is issued for a player’s failure to handle a traffic ticket, as in the King case. “You basically would have to get in contact with every single county in the state of Georgia on a daily basis to find out if something like that popped up,” Richt said.

Several players said the team is well aware that off-field problems will have serious consequences.

“Enough has happened that I think the team is tired of it, the coaching staff is tired of it and the athletic director and everyone associated with the University of Georgia is [too],” quarterback Aaron Murray said. “We definitely have seen a little too much of everything that is going on. We’ve just got to be smart as a team … on and off the field.”

Said wide receiver Tavarres King: “Everybody knows at this point in time, if you get in trouble, you’re going to get a pretty good lashing.”

Richt never said there was a zero-policy. Everyone just got jumped to that conclusion because the last kid got kicked off for a DUI. A unpaid speeding ticket and a DUI are no where near the same offense and in no way should deserve the same punishment.

Seems about right to me with the increased penalties: DUI = DONE; unpaid fines = game time suspensions. I’m sure there will be some who prefer a shooting squad at dawn but that might be a bit heavy handed… Want to talk about UF’s 250+ traffic violations under Meyer’s reign including 12 players who got 7 or more violations and still played?

First of all, lets take a look at CMR. He is a great man, but in the words of Arnold “lacks discipline”. Please Remember that this is not the 1st offense for Mr. King… He has no real fear to stay clean, not paying a speeding ticket is poor judgement to say the least, stupid at the minimum, but he knows CMR will not boot him. It seems to me that he has idea that he is untouchable and that the normal rules don’t apply to him. From the outside looking in it appears that CMR will boot someone who is not a producing member of the team, but not a starter / producer. He is not loosing control of his players, that happened a few arrest ago. CMR is slowly becoming a man that is grabbing at straws. He needs to do the right thing hear, which is not easy, lord knows I would want to be in his situation. King has to go or eventually it will be CMR.

You have got to be F-ing kidding me! Now that I know the cercumstances behind the arrest, I’d of supported Richt if he decided to give no suspension and result to in house discipline. Two games seemed a bit harsh to me, but that was before reading about this being his second offense. Not paying a speeding ticket and/or not showing up for a court date is either just plain old stupid or extremely arrogant, especially given Richt’s and the Administration’s recent focus on this type of thing. Not knowing the player personally, I can’t say which it might be, but I am sure Richt knows which and that may be why he got two games instead of one.

I might respect Richt that much more if he picked the game for his suspension and it was one in which King’s participation would be more critical. Being suspended for Vandy/UK is one thing, but being suspended for UF would be quite another. He needs to pick more meaningful games for suspension so that the player knows that he has not only violated the rules, but also let his teammates down.

If CMR really wanted to clean things up, he would have suspended King for three games…through Florida. That would send a clear message that irresponsible behavior will not be tolerated. A suspension for KY and Vandy just shows that Richt is only willing to punish him to the extent he can do so without harming the team’s record.

Wait a minute, all this gal needed to do to get her $500 back is go to CMR and tell HIM what was going on……assuming she goes to ballgames, she’s a booster.

CMR would HAVE to make CK pay her back, and report the loan to the SEC and NCAA and apply to have CK’s eligibility reinstated.

Oh, you say she did go to CMR and did get paid back?

But that all that other stuff (reporting to the conference, NCAA, etc….) didn’t happen?

Interesting.

USC only has to lose 2 more with one being to the Gators. UGA could run the table and UF only lose to UGA leaving a three way tie for the East. I said last week that it will be interesting to see what Richt will do when a star player gets arrested. Well, that didn’t take long. Now I guess you DAWGS will find how much of what Richts will match what Richt actually does.
The reason the ACC COPS(hehehe I love that the ACC COPS) had to check Caleb Kings License becaus he would have to drive one of the Vehicles back to campus. See King’s brother didn’t have a license and that started the problem. Then the Owner came to get the car. See the owner couldn’t drive 2 cars at the same time. So the ACC COP had to make sure the owner of the car had to be checked to see if he could drive. Well King then had to drive one of the vehiccles back to campus. Right? Well that gave the ACC Cops every right to check is King was legal to drive the car back to campus.
DID I MAKE THAT EASY ENOUGH FOR YOU DAWGS?
Heheheheheh the ACC COPS busting SEC DAWG players! That is just too funny.

It is a lot easier for those on here pointing fingers and judging a young man than what Coach Richt has to do. Caleb screwed up and is suspended for two games. He should not be kicked off the team. Missing two games and public humilation is enough punishment. Coach Richt is in a bad situation. He can not win regardless of what he does with Caleb. He can’t hold these guys down for 24 hours. The players have to be mature enough to make the right decisions. Trust me that Richt is on these guy’s butts. I for one do not envy him for one minute. Everyone makes mistakes and when one does hopefully it is well learned and not repeated. Remember, most of these young men are doing petty things. Not much different than any other college age young man. I do not condone Caleb’s actions and he needs to pay for it but on the other hand he does not need to crucified. I am am embarassed on what is going on. I think we all are sick and tired of arrests. However, let Coach Richt make his decisions and lets rally behind him and give him our support. It is a lot easier to throw a stone than get hit by one. I would think that 99.9 percent of those posting on here love UGA and want what is best. Coach Richt is a good man and a good coach. Bad things happen from time to time in all programs. Seems our program is heavily publicized and the press is making a mountain out of a mole hill. Back in the “day” when Coach Dooley was in charge, hardly any thing was ever documented publically. We had some problems back then but anyone that ever played for UGA knew the last thing you wanted to do was to meet with Coach Dooley or Coach Russell for something that you might have done that was “stupid”. I know I was scared and I think the rest of the team was as well. Maybe the fear factor is not as strong as it once was. I know today’s youth does not seem as respectful. A lot has to do with their upbringing. I can preach on here all day but in a nutshell give Coach Richt your support. He is the leader of our program and has accomplished some great things and with our support he will further his accomplishments.

You and I both know that Georgia cannot be a nationally competitive team if we are going to start worrying about character and honor rather than good players.

Some people don’t like it but the Bulldogs ARE Georgia. Without our wonderful football team, I bet only a handful of people would attend Georgia. That might not be right but it is the truth.

I don’t really care that it was just a speeding ticket. If he had paid the ticket like most normal people do, then we wouldn’t have a problem. He’s being punished for not showing up to court and being arrested.

It’s pretty simple. The new rule at Georgia should be, “If you get arrested for ANY reason, you are kicked off the team.” Maybe then these fools would think before they act.

But geesh, when you get a speeding ticket, don’t pay it, fail to appear in court, get a warrant issued for your arrest, and this is on top of your prior offenses…. it is more than just a one time slip up.

Dawgs> Gators First off Kentuck has beaten Ga 2 of the past 4 years. And South Carolina has to lose 3 more genius
===================================
no SC does not have to lose 3 more genius
.
1. Fla and Kentucky/Tenn is all SC needs to lose
.
2. Then UGA needs to beat Fla
.
3. Then ther will be a three way tie in the East
.
since all three will be 5-3 and each team bet the other. SC over UGA…UGA over Fla…Fla over SC there will need to be a second tier of tie breakers as H2H nullifies itself whne all three beat each other as Fla cant go because of UGA, UGA cant go because of SC, SC cant go because of Fla….get it?
.
So then the second tie breaker would be DIVISION record.
.
both Fla and UGA would be ahead of SC as SC lost to 2 eastern teams.
.
leaving the deciding factor the H2H between UGA and Fla.
.
UGA would go in based on that…..you clearly DONT know what yoyu are talking about so how about STFU

Pluto, I can’t speak for everyone else on here, but I have never been arrested. I know I’ve done some things where, if I had been caught, I surely would have made a trip to jail, but you’re missing the point.

The point is, as a collegiate athlete, you have to be smart enough not to put yourself in stupid situations. If I had a football scholarship in college, I surely would not have done some of the stupid things I did. College football players are under a spotlight, and what they do right or wrong will become public knowledge. These players have got to understand that.

Dude technically each and every time you get a ticket you COULD be arrested. Officers choose to cite you as the jails would quickly fill up and its not feasible to do so. You also could recieve a year in jail. Look up the speeding laws of Georgia. 11 arrests with a majority of them being traffic related is not that bad…..at least he did not steal a dead woman credit card and use it for a year like some Fla players did….NOW THAT DISGUSTING

It’s a traffic ticket!! A Florida linrbacker tries to poke another player’s eyes out and gets suspended for a half. I think CMR has let the naysayers (like Schulz) make this call. They should suspend the Athens police force. This punishment is too severe.

As to the idiots who think zero tolerance means throwing players off the team for a speeding ticket, suffice it to say they are too stupid to understand what a real “offense” that would warrent removal from the team actually is. Trust me, college kids get traffic tickets (like the rest of us) at every school in the country and it is not counted as an “arrest”. Armed robbery is an arrest deserving thing, not a traffic ticket. Missing the court date? Well, not smart, but usually, in most towns and cities, does not actually result in being thrown in a jail cell. The Athens police department seems out of control.

Yes it is just a traffic incident, but “Ya gotta use your noodles guys”. CMR is getting more bad publicity when he least needs it. Honestly, giving it his 2nd infraction (traffic related or not) and giving Bakers dismissal, then CMR should have dismissed him.

1- King first offense? It was a teachable moment is the excuse

1- Baker offense? Underage DUI- Is that not a teachable moment for CMR?

2-Kind 2nd traffic related offense?- At this point King is just ignorant and has no fear of punishment from CMR.

2 Offenses very similar in nature? King should have been dismissed. He should have known better and ignorance or an I forgot is not a valid reason anymore. CMR is failing to teach accountability.

It isn’t about what Caleb King DID that is an issue. He was arrested…for the second time in his career at UGA. I agree that failing to appear in court and a DUI are nowhere near the same offense. BUT the reasoning behind them are the same…irresponsibilty and poor judgment. To say that he “forgot” is just inexcusable. Did he not think to himself (while the team was being scolded about all the previous arrests), “Hey, maybe I should take care of that speeding ticket I got awhile back? I was supposed to go to court a few months ago.” No, Caleb, tickets don’t just disappear. The money shouldn’t have been an issue either. If he had gone to COURT, he probably could have gotten the fine knocked down and done some community service. So he gets suspended for two games (but of course he will be back in time for the UF game). I am a GA fan through and through, but this is absurd. It is an embarassment to the program and the school. CMR…I feel for you. You shouldn’t have to teach these boys how to be responsible human beings; they have parents. But you have failed to put the fear of God in them. They don’t fear being in trouble or ruining their football careers because they know that they will probably get a slap on the wrist. I understand that letting King go would have brought about some unfavorbale scenarios. But a 2 game suspension? I don’t know Richt…

I’m the biggest UGA fan in the world but KING must go. He’s been trouble from day 1 at UGA not to mention what he did in high school by switching schools at the last minute. He’s lucky to get just two games. He should have been dismissed from the team back in April for threatening the girl who loaned him money. And for those who say it was ‘just a speeding ticket’, give me a break. He knew what he was doing and tried to beat the system. He got caught. End of story. Get rid of King before he does somethig else stupid!!

I’m no fan of the dawgs, but you have to levels of severity where the punishment fits the crime. You can’t kick a young man of the team for something this small. Was he dumb for not paying his ticket? Yes, but come on people. Do you have any idea how many students at UGA have probably been arrested on a similar offense this year? I guessing there’s a few. Sitting in jail for a while and missing a couple of games is a fair punishment. RTR

ManiacalDawgHoyden

Zero tolerence has many degrees of tolerance. Take the State of Georgia’s Zero Tolerence drug use enforcement for Georgia employers and employees. If a person smokes pot on his own time, gets hurt on the job and goes to the emergency aid facility of the employer, he or she will be drug tested and fired from his or her job when the pot (that remains in your system up to 30 days)shows up even though it was smoked on the weekend before the accident. BUT if you’re a Atlanta Falcon player, for instance, get busted for driving offenses, DUI, pot procession, etc., the State of GA does not insist that the Falcon player be fired from the team for good, in the same manner as lowly office worker.

I mean, for pot, mostly. First you see AJ selling a jersey to an ‘agent’ (BS, I agree) who now appears to be a drug dealer or serious middleman. Then you have King’s brother borrowing somebody else’s car and driving around at 4 AM. Usually if I am out at 4 AM (not often), I am either drunk, or drunk and stoned. I imagine it’s not much different for these kids.

The difference for me is I pay to go to school. These guys have their education paid for.

Patrick – you missed a couple of important facts: This was the same UT team that got stomped by Oregon (a team that UGA doesn’t want to play) 48-13 – and UNLIKE Georgia – Oregon had pulled most of their starters at the end of the 3rd quarter, This was the SAME UT team that should have gotten beat by UAB, but won 32-29 in double OT. UBA dominated the game in every phase – racking-up 544 yards offense (UGA didn’t EVEN come close to doing this – and this was against UAB) to UT’s 287 yards.
And some of you may point at the LSU game – well UT only had 215 yards of offense in that game – whereas LSU had 434 (more than double) and UT’s QB was only 12-23 for 121 yards. Where as in the UGA game, the two QBs totaled 17-25 for 260 yards (which were basically the same stats as Murray).

Again, one set of standards for “stars”, and another set for those who aren’t. The coach’s lack of control over his team is evident both on and off the field. These types of decisions don’t make it look any better. Zero tolerance should apply to all players. If he really wants to send a message to his team, hand one of these “stars” their walking papers next time one of them is arrested and (Lord knows, that’s coming)and just see if that doesn’t get their attention.

I have never posted before but feel compelled to express my frustration with this group of coaches and
players. I love GA football. Sure, I like to win. But I care most about how we win and lose and how
the team represents the university.

This program has “jumped the shark”. If there was ever a seminal moment to do the right thing,
this was it. This is no longer about a particular incident or its severity. Consider the totality of all
that has occurred. Richt and the administration have moved the line in the sand about a dozen times now. We really aren’t doing these your men any favors here.

What lessons are being taught? Certainly not the kind needed to succeed in life beyond football.

This program has zero integrity left. For those of us who have been fans for decades now, remember
how we used to feel? We were always proud of our dawgs; win or lose. When the right lessons are taught
it shows both on and off the field.

For way to long now, this program has been adrift. Doesn’t look like we can expect any real change any
time soon…

The woman told police she contacted King again on April 27 and informed him that she planned to take legal action if she was not paid. According to the report, King responded by again threatening to post nude pictures and video of her on the Internet.

Well, nobody will say the a$$ painting was wrong and Coach Richt has today passed on the opportunity to make a resounding statement to these players that getting arrested won’t cut it. He may get another chance (and I am betting he will) but this opportunity will have passed. So, for right now . . . getting arrested won’t get you kicked off the team. Who’s up for number 12? Who will it be? It can’t be me because I just got fired. I am merely a little dog but I am not tainted by arrest.

does anyone forget that this is King’s 2nd arrest? The character of Players for UGA has to be questioned. How many chances does one get to screw up?

The answer is: The number of chances is directly proportional to his value to the team. Fourth string or worse, off the team. Starter, one game first offence, 2 games for second, etc. This is the Mark Richt “strict penalties” punishment.

You know what might be useful to get the attention of some new recruits? What if the arrested players used their Clarke County booking numbers for their uniforms? For instance, the player just arrested could be 767864. It would offer the players some individual recognition/attention and serve as a good recruiting tool. Of course, I am just a little dog. I’d cut King from the squad because I want that scholarship to give out this year. King has a history of issues. As a coach can you trust him now. What if the event that triggered the arrest happened the day the Dawgs travel to JAX and you have him factored into to your game plan big time. No it is not about a little speeding ticket…which can lead to an arrest and detainment. I want that scholarship to give to a player I know I can trust to be there. Plus tell me how many plays has King seen the last year and this year? How much has that absence cost this team…well a fumble in Boulder in great field position. Sorry, it is about production from a position that I see no productio, but I see alot of baggage causing me and an AD to hangle when it should not.

Lets see if Georgia has learn it’s lesson, that is what this is all about isn’t it? This seems very close to the other milk toast punishments that Richt deals out. What Rich does not understand is this stuff doesn’t go away. You can’t wish it away. There is a kid sitting on that roster right now with an expired drivers licence, bet my life on it, probably two or three. There is a cause and effect here. I believe after watching that football team play the last couple of years that this coaching staff is too dumb to understand that. This is part of the reason they recruit so well. Easy school, easy woman, easy football, who needs to go to a real college when you can have all this and tell you friends you go to college. Of course they are about as close a college student as I am a NBA center. Now this same institution that has abused any honest degree holder at the University of Georgia wants the state to hand over an engineering school to them. Not because they really want a academic situation but because they are starting to lose recruits to Auburn and Ga. Tech that actually want a real education. I bet they didn’t know that existed until lately.

October 12th, 2010

No matter how much hate there is for one school or another …………..all SEC football fans would agree that AJ Green doing his selfish dumbassed clothing sale and the summer of fun by the rest of the kids and including that moron, Ealey ( he did it twice ) and now, Caleb King, that UGA has been hurt adversely by it all. UGA is 2-4 and that isdue to all of this player stupidity and they need to be ousted. Period.

If Green plays vs SC and Ealey does or does not fumble in that game, UGA STILL wins. Same is true of the Arkansas game ………..Ealey does or does not not fumble and AJ gets only one TD,
then UGA wins and probably wins big. Ditto for MSU and by then, UGA would have been more ready mentally to play ball vs Colorado and UGA wins that game. Ealey blew that game however, with his shanked 34 YD FG. Keep in mind, UGA has better skill talent than any of these 4 schools and including the Mallet and Lattimore factors.

Bottom line? UGA has been badly hurt by these animals and now facing a quality KY team in awhile, and UGA with only one back and C Thomas, UGA might get hurt badly again.

Richt must go. He recruited them and now, let him take a trip with them all. I am so done with all of this mismanagement. That is precisely what it is ……… mismanagement.

As a UGA grad, I look not at their infactions but what it COST my alma mater and for that reason, I say kick them all out of school and fire CMR. Let them feel it for awhile.

Go to Athens and get drunk and FRIEND RAPED. If the Tech students didn’t walk downtown(off Campus) alone then they would not be in danger for the most part. In Athens the students are the problem so other students don’t know who to fear. At Tech students should know where to go and not to go. Atlanta has more people than Athens and a better chance for issues. I carried on Tech all the time. I never worried about the school catching me or a Mugger coming after me.

BG, I agree with you. My problem is that the same consequences don’t apply to other schools. If all the schools had the same policies no matter what they were, I would be fine with it. A police officer at a club in Tennessee was sent to the hospital where some Vol. football players were hanging out. No one was charged. I really think the AJC should check the court records of all the other schools and report back to us.
OMG, this just in, Aaron Murray was caught chewing bubble gum in class today and will be arraigned in the morning according to Athens-Clarke County Police. Coach Richt needs to adopt a better approach to disciplining his players. From now on, when the next guy screws up, the entire team should be punished. That will put a stop to all this nonsense. The players will begin to police themselves, and they will learn what it means to be accountable. See the attached clip:

The punishment is TOO harsh. Should have been one game at most. I am all for discipline but now people want blood for spitting on a sidewalk. What some don’t realize is programs like Bama have relationships with police in Tuscaloosa. You had to have lived there to understand what I am saying. Bulldog football is 6 months a year in Georgia. It is 365+ days Alabama. There is no conspiracy going on in Athens. Police are just doing their job. But police in Tuscaloosa (and some other campuses) run it through Governor Saban first when players have issues. Richt knows this and it must be frustrating.

Easy school, easy woman, easy football, who needs to go to a real college when you can have all this and tell you friends you go to college.

That sums up the situation perfectly.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

But hey, Richt did drive the team to its biggest victory of all: the Fulmer/Richt Cup.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?

Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 44 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

This was mark Richt’s exact quote from the ajc when asked about a zero tolerance policy:

Asked Sunday evening if Baker’s quick dismissal from the team indicates a new zero tolerance for arrests, Richt paused and said: “I think all of our guys understand that they need to behave. I’ll put it that way.”

I think Richt was intentionally vague about UGA’s discipline policy to allow for some ‘wiggle-room” when handing out consequences for individual players, especially for the higher profile players like King. Had he been a redshirt freshman who had never played a down, like Demetre Baker, I doubt he’d still be on the team.

This summer and the crap that a few UGA players did and Ealey and King and Green, being stars, has poisoned the entire season.

I say let them all ………all …….INCLDUING GREEN take a hike. The number of games missed, the gravity of their infraction, none of that ………. none of that matters. What matters is the UGA season has been runied and Richt will ultimately pay the price as he should.

The good news is that it will be funny to see one of them or both or all not do much in pro ball.

They are LOSERS and will not be remembered. LOSERS never are.

I want everyone to read this post. This post is very FAIR and how things should be. UGA really needs to go after kids who care about their team and university. They should stop recruiting these “NFL” bound thugs every year. Personally, I am an african american but I would like to see some more white guys play for UGA. What ever happened to the hard hitting white guys like David Pollack? We need bust @ss mentality guys like him back on this team NOW! There are some black kids that play like that, but UGA is not recruiting them obviously.

Why don’t the players get it. No more arrests, it’s that simple, coaches, mothers, fathers, you have to help these kids get it. They are still kids. So if all this fails, which it appears that it is, then the Coach needs to make a statement, and I am sorry but maybe it should be Caleb. Off the team and then maybe these kids understand why the fans are a little up in arms after 3 years of this. 1 or 2 incidents, be firm and Lenient. Many instances, drop a bomb and get their attention. Some one on this team needs to become a leader and assist their teammates with stuff like this. Who is that going to be? Mr. Gamble. Mr. Boling, a combo and others? I think it would help bring the team together and help win some games. I am a Georgia fan because of Mark Richt. I want to keep it that way. Please make a statement with action and not words.

5150, you post a lot of crap on this site but it is obvious that you don’t know sh** from shinola. My daughter happens to be a natural blonde at UGA and I would match her grades with yours any day. She worked her tail off to get in UGA this year. She’s a Biology major and doing quite well. There is no doubt in my mind that she would have been accepted at Tech as well. The average GPA of this year’s freshman class was a 3.88. You can spew all the venom you want but you need to lay off the trash talking comments of the students. I know a lot of these students and they are pretty bright my friend.

Georgia is the laughing stock of the SEC.

I hope President Adams and AD Mc Garity will be happy 5 years from now when most of Richt’s Dawgs are in the Real Dawg House aka The Slammer !

Instead of an academic institution the names THUGA or The Athens Correctional Institute will be far more familiar.

We’ve now gone 14 months without a single player arrested. I can handle a loss like this weekend. After 2 1/2 years of never losing in the regular season it was inevitable we would have to lose eventually. I can accept that. What I can’t accept is players constantly getting arrested and embarrassing the university. And the dawg fans shouldn’t accept it either. 11 arrests just since the spring is unfathomable even if a lot of it was for minor, stupid stuff. A program that completely lacks discipline off the field will also largely reflect that lack of discipline on the field as well.

If college athletes are as poor as all the sports talk people say and believe how do they come up with all the bail money to get out of jail. I know $300.00, as I believe I heard 1 source state, is really not that much but if you supposedly don’t have any then it’s a fortune. Others have been much higher. Is bail money part of the scholarship at uga?

King has been spoon feed since high school. It is about time someone has made him responsible for his actions. The sad part is that he was the running back that was suppose to be the next great one for UGA and he has not lived up to that standard. Now, maybe some great high school backs will consider Ga. because we need them now.

The punishment fit the crime in this case. A message has been sent to the players and Caleb as well. If Caleb messes up one more time, he will be finished at Georgia. Caleb must have a big Senior year if he has any hope of making it in the NFL, but he first has to stay a Bulldog.

Well now the door is open for Malcome to see what he can do. Never have seen a reason to redshirt him anyways. Opportunity is knocking Ken. Are you up to the task?

Second, of the non-UGA fans on this site calling for his head – How stupid are you: 1> you are lost, otherwise you would not be on this site, 2> King does nothing to help the team win – he and ealey are probably the worst RB’s in the SEC, and that includes the ones that don’t play. “At Fla. you can make death threats and get nothing at UGA you get a speeding ticket an people want you off the team. This is media and mainly AJC’s fault.” —-per Seabass

Seabass….

You think being suspended (Rainey) from the team until the situation is resolved is “doing nothing” at Florida? Rainey has been reinstated to the team because the charges against him have been dropped…and he is only practicing with the team….and is not playing this week…and Meyer has clearly stated that Rainey must earn his playing time back by proving he has changed by doing a certain amount of things in time to earn that right to play again. I think that is doing about all you can do to a kid who made a stupid mistake, has publicly apologized and stated he does not want to be that person, and there are no standing charges against him. What do you want Florida to do?

Murphy…..

Rainey has been reinstated….but he is practicing only and is not part of the playing team on Saturdays for now. He has to earn that right according to Meyer….it will not be easy for him….as it was not easy for Hammond (DUI) this summer….who is just back playing.

And….I don’t get the 2-game suspension for King. Didn’t he pay the fine after being arrested? I guess he is paying for the sins of others and the image problem in Athens right now. It sure appears that a lot of these kids (at Georgia and Florida) are not very bright, doesn’t it?

It seems he has learned a valuable lesson….which he is still learning by having to live up to even higher expectations at Florida. Word is…Rainey might return in time for the Georgia game….or for the South Carolina game…if he meets are the difficult standards he has to meet between now and then….P.S…..all the Gator players are weloming him back because they, too, know who the real Chris Rainey is….and it isn’t the person who made that phone call.

However, IF the allegations as contained in The Red and Black newspaper article concerning possible blackmail, THEN this is a WHOLE DIFFERENT BALLGAME. IF TRUE, and this is a BIG IF, then Caleb NEEDS to be gone! Also, IF those allegations are true, then Caleb MAY HAVE eligibility issues. You think a 2 game suspension doesn’t fit the offense? Read this.

Since 1993 two sisters in Mississippi have been serving consecutive life sentences for accessory to a robbery where $11 was taken and nobody was hurt. The three actual robbers accepted plea bargains to 8 years, of which they only served 2 years. The plea bargains were contingent on the robbers naming the two sisters, who were then convicted of luring two men into a trap.

The source of the information as I interpreted it is from the New York Times.

2 games is a joke. These players need real discipline. Any Arrest means at least 4 games out. Any Second problem of any kind means you are off the team.

At one time, if a player got arrested that was the end period. Now – it is like it is no big deal. If it is no big deal then more and more players will do whatever they want. That is where we are now.
A 2 game break is no penalty. Coach Richt doesn’t have the guts to draw the line. He is trying to save himself right now.

Rainey is now back for Florida. Ummm. Amazing how a suspension for murder threats have now turned into a few weeks suspension. Would two loses have played a factor??? I sometimes wonder if colleges are delving a little too much into the non-college side of a player? Caleb King comes to mind.

Haven’t we all gotten tickets at some point. I got a speeding ticket in Waldo, FL (speed trap of the SE) about 10 yrs ago on a Sunday morning. Returning after a BB game on Sat night at the Swamp.

2 games seems a little harsh for a kid who made a mistake in not following up after the ticket – used poor judgment and probably didn’t have the $ to pay.

Uh, no it is not a traffic violation. A traffic violation is going 76 in a 55.

Caleb King twice has been arrested. 1st time for driving with a suspended license driving the wrong way on a 1-way. This one for 76 in a 55 AND then FAILURE to APPEAR IN COURT as ORDERED, unless of course, the D.A. can’t read.

patrick, take it up with Coach Richt son. 2 games get over it for the bum who has done NOTHING since being named # 1 football player in the state of Georgia 2006 and # 3 running back in the nation who told Ken Malcome that beinga Running Back here at UGA is a “GRIND.”

11 Arrests this year 2010 is National Championship Fulmer Cup.

Traffic violation my butt, patrick. By the way patrick, 40-18 for all of 2006 2007 2008 2009 & 2010 plus for same 5 years # 2 in the nation in Arrests / Suspensions Fulmer Cup All-Time Standings # 2.

IF the article in The Red and Black IS true, then Caleb DOES have a problem. In addition, he MAY also have some eligibility issues WHEN the NCAA gets wind of this article. Remember, they suspended the quarterback for Middle Tennessee State University EARLIER THIS football season when he got a loan (for $ 1,500.00) and did NOT repay the loan. His problem was in getting the loan (NOT his refusal/inability to repay the loan).

Question: If UGA played Florida after the Vandy game would that have been a 1 game suspension? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I know why I hate UGA Football sometimes. The Jack@$$ coaches (influenced by boosters) suspend players based on their perceived chances of winning a game. I’ll tell you what I’m all about.. I’m all about uniform discipline. I don’t care if it’s one, two or three games. Pick one and make it even across the board. Washaun’s crime was extremely more punishable than King’s yet he only received one game. I think it was because they had S. Carolina next. I’d feel better if the NCAA handed down all punishment instead of leaving it up to the schools… at least we’d see uniform punishment across the board.

Former UGA Parent,

It is troubling about the search of Caleb King’s residence. This is based upon a Judge granting such a warrant.

Those, here, say that we cannot label Caleb King a

THUG.

I never have, but I have replied to them each time they say that, that he is a THUG and that our University of Georgia Football Program has 13 percent of our Scholarships given out to THUGS.

THUGS whom Coach Richt CODDLES.

I honestly believe that Coach Richt specifically TRIES to get these type of representatives of my alma mater here.

You ask what is the appropriate punishment for this ? Well, they did not find anything. Coach Richt ONLY SUSPENDS a player now who is ARRESTED. He hides EVERYTHING ELSE UNDER THE RUG.

I will be more than happy to provide these sorted details in detail.

If you aren’t arrested, there is no suspension.

Coach Richt FORCES the Police to ARREST 13 percent of his 85 scholarships since March 7. Otherwise, there is NO JUSTICE.

So last Wednesday, a week ago now today, Police get a search warrant and seize items from the residence reported by Rivals to be Caleb King’s residence which he shares with other student athletes and a

NON STUDENT.

(1) CK’s Parents, above are questioned, indeed but what about CMR ?

(2) CMR recruited him here. Is this another Zach Mettenberger where CMR claims he was lied to when it is now common knowledge for over a week that CK should have said to this non student roomi that he has to leave, or CK has to leave.

(3) So, has Caleb King done this a week later, or is the non student still a roomi in good standing still living with Caleb King ?

(4) what items were seized from the residence last Wednesday and have they all been returned ?

(5) what exactly is a NON STUDENT doing living with 3 student-athletes ?

(6) Well CMR have you stepped in on this with YOUR RECRUIT sir ?

(7) Have you advised Caleb King that if he is not going to kick the non student out, nor move out himself, that he is not allowed to be in contact with any of your team until he does by whatever means is necessary to kick him out with probable cause or not.

(8) it is not conducive to studying that a non student lives with the 3 student-athletes who then all the way to Nebraska it is proven that it is Caleb King’s residence that a Judge Issued a Warrant to Search the Premises with items removed to determine if they are in fact part of the stolen goods.

(9) I am sorry the non student has got to go. Oh you cannot afford to live there nor find a replacement mid Semester ? Excuse me, you cannot afford NOT to kick him out. Being searched with a search warrant is NOT acceptable.

(10) Now, do you want me to ask how many arrests and on what charges have all the residents of Caleb King’s residence are there ?

(11) Caleb, young man, you do not run your life like that of anyone I know.

(a) suspended license
(b) drive anyway
(c) drive wrong way on 1-way
(e) speed 76 in 55 got ticket reads pay or Court this date
(f) do neither
(g) 4 am yesterday go to brother’s aid who is drive suspended license
(h) present your ID to Police 4 months after told go to Court August
(i) find out your license is suspended yet again yourself & your brother
(j) then we find out Wed 10/6 your home searched with search warrant
(k) charges will be filed and your roomi dead in the middle of it all
(l) roomi who is non student
(m) you told Ken Malcome that being UGA RB is a “grind”
(n) you have 228 yds rush 8 yds receiving 1 Td through now 8 games
(o) you were # 1 recruit in Georgia and # 3 RB in nation 2006
(p) you have not done 1 damn thing since you got here

Paul,

You are just not informed. 2 games is not nearly enough, if you do not mind me pointing out.

As for

BLUTO

http://blutarsky.wordpress.com/2010/10/11/it-never-ends/

Bluto is ALWAYS WRONG. Quoting him does more harm than good because first off he never makes a statement himself but goes and reads something somewhere and flies off the handle about what he read with URL Link. He ALWAYS misses the point.

Bluto is saying that Walton County knew where to find Caleb King – like there is anyone in Walton County who even knows who Caleb King is. He has done nothing at UGA but hang around with a bad element get arrested and will have to show for it all after 8 games this season, for example, 228 yards rushing 8 yards receiving and 1 TD combined.

I dare say that no one in America has heard of Caleb King based upon his actual efforts on the field.

Off the field, yes, we have $500 refuse to pay or nude video issue, search warrant for non student roommate with items removed last Wednesday, driving suspended license twice once wrong way on 1-way and now at 4 am yesterday for FAILURE to APPEAR.

It is no big deal Bluto belts out.

We are 2-4 Fulmer Cup NC. 11 as you say arrested. And, this King guy has been a total example of what is wrong with this program # 22 in wins after 2005 when Caleb first got here after 2005 and the # 2 All-Time Fulmer Cup Rank after 2005 when Caleb got here after 2005 to contribute already twice being arrested with a third serious one hanging in the balance from what I read of the Police Report.

Not a big deal, per Bluto and you quote Bluto here.

Ben,

It is not like Caleb King sold a jersey for $ 500, you say ?

No, he borrowed $ 500 from a lady. She asked to be repaid. He said no. She asked again later. He said both times he would publish nude video.

He also lives with a roommate who is not a student who caused his residence to be searched and items taken away to determine if stolen goods.

And, has twice had his DL suspended and arrested both times. Not paying a $380 ticket and not appearing in court is now his uncle’s fault.

Whose fault is all the rest of this including especially not doing a thing on the field for CMR since recruited here as the # 1 football player in the state of Georgia 2006 ?

About MR’s No Zero Tolerance policy of MR-

“Richt also had expressed exasperation recently with player arrests, telling a caller on his radio show Sept. 13: “My patience is worn about as thin as it can wear…I can promise you [the players] know that the next guy has got himself some serious issues and anybody after that, too…We’ve all grown very tired of it.”

Asked Sunday evening if Baker’s quick dismissal indicates a new zero tolerance for arrests, Richt paused before saying: “I think all of our guys understand that they need to behave. I’ll put it that way.””

I guess there is only a De facto Zero Tolerance policy. One for Stars and starters and one for other players.

This is his ,King’s, 2nd brush with the law, actually now third for those who want to sugar coat it.
1st – ticket for riding a scooter with suspended liscense – Okay – this is a joke, I have np with this. Police should have better things to do.
2nd – Ticket for A traffice violation – Okay – not too serious, still, young man need to watch himself. Was he punished after this infraction?
3rd offense – Failure to appear in court – Judge PO’d, bench warrant issued. This is more serious. the “oh, I forgot” line does not work here, for all you who say it does tell it to a judge and see how far that gets you. If caught, immediate arrest, go to jail, do not pass go. You disrespect the judge and the courts. WTF, does King think himself above the law, or does UGA football think itself above the law? Pattern developing here?

In conclusion while no actual Zero Policy exists – MR has talked tough, threatened, pleaded, cajoled and done everything short of booting a starter off the team for this type of bunk. LAst I think was Odell Thurman and he was re-instated. Worked out well for Thurman, he was a real flop int he NFL – Could’ve had a nice career and threw it away.

Is it time for a Zero Policy rule – You Betcha!

Saturday Night Live can’t write this stuff. I think this would make a great comedy series. The 11th arrested player and “I expect all our players to take care of their responsibilities on and off the field,”. It is hugely apparent here that your players are not getting the message coach. After watching Washaun Ealey is the exact situation, you have a repeat. You had a player lie to you or you did not ask the question on your “monthly” inspection and the person in charge of that is lying to you. I think you have a lot of liars reporting to Richt, because these things that happen with expired driver’s licenses are premeditated offenses not bar room fights or impulsive situations every program has. The press in these thing are a joke. More ink was used to talk about a Florida player poking a Georgia player’s eyes during a game Georgia lost than on all eleven players who have lied and cheated their team. You got Green hanging out with gangsters and this paper spends more time berating the NCAA than the real problem; the player’s lack of respect for the rules.

In today’s paper we have an agent pretty much defining payoffs to players from about every section of the country, most of them verified by the players. One more time explain to me why Bush had to give up his Heisman. What do these reporters do on their beats at these colleges. I think they spend most of their time eating the free food and drink put out to them by the colleges and ignoring the smell. I listened to some fat disk jockey on 680 talking about the food lay out of one sport’s team compared the cheapness of another the other day. It dawns on me these low paid hanger oners could be in the middle of a crack house and not notice as long as they were fed. They are like the fat relatives that come and never leave. They have an opinion on everything but seldom a solution. Reggie Bush one of the greatest football players of our time, completely run down by these tubs while 11 lawbreaker in a pond much larger get a tap on the wrist. It you cannot figure out if the kid has a valid driver’s license how do you figure out if an agent is paying this punk. They pay these coaches millions and not the third team punter but his starting tailbacks both of them have expired drivers licenses.

If this had happened to a red-shirt or a bench warmer, he would have been kicked off the team. Being that a starter gets thrown in jail, he gets suspended for games against mighty Vandy and Kentucky. But, the most important thing is that he will be back just in time for the Florida game… What a crock!
Players like King have been coddled since the 4th grade: Can’t read, don’t worry about it, he is an athlete. Get locked up for mere stupidity, don’t worry about it, he is an athlete. These guys have not been held responsible for anything for most of their football dominated lives. Glad to see the coddling continues all the way through a so called university.

this is not just a simple speeding ticket,it is failure to appear which is contempt of court.
nobody forgets about this and goes on about thier bussiness. this incident is yet
another example of continuing decline of this great storied program and what better
example that richt has lost control of the program. also it shows the quality of our

I think some of you trolls just don’t undertsand the concept of Zero Tolerance. It’s almost as if you have an agenda rather than making a thoughtful comment. If you think losing 2 games from your season is “tolarance” you must not understand why these boys join a football team. To me, on a strickly civil private matter as a traffic voilation, the University frankly doesn’t even have a place to get involved. But accepting a scholarship does have some agreement not to embarrass his team, so there is the option of getting involved or not. 2 games suspension for this minor of an transgretion IS Zero Tolerance.

And please show us where any team in the country would tolerate this any less.

I did notice the line in the artical on charges “ranging from battery to public intoxication”. Wouldn’t those be worst 2? As in the top. The extreme of the “range”? Where does the offence of failure to provide proper middle name (a charge so petty that the police later appologized for thier mishandling of it) fit in to the range between battery and public drunkiness? or any of the many traffic related charges for that matter?

I live close to Athens, and I get a newspaper that published a mugshot of every arrest in 4 counties during the month of September. The Clarke County section of the mugshots would have shocked all of you. Why? Because it was 90% rich white kids, and 10% thugs. The problem isn’t with the football team or even with just thugs. The problem of lawlessness is across the board with the youth of our country. They are hopeless, and sometimes no amount of guidance and direction can get through to them.

None of you want zero tolerance when it comes to your children or grandchildren. For goodness sakes, CMR has kicked 4 kids off the team. One that very well could have been the starting QB. Stop with all the crazy talk just because you don’t have a life outside of college football.

This was the predicted disciplinary outcome from the outset – if CMR wanted to make a statement and set an example he blew it again.

Good thing he has Idaho State coming up for the next round of player punishments.

So true. UGA people can go to the ACC Jail and see the booking records for the last 24 hours. The # of college age kids arrested is mind-blowing. That should be expected when UGA is always in the top 10 party schools. Athens has more bars than the legal drinking age patrons can support. How do they stay in business? Because the county and city make a ton of money off students drinking and getting busted afterwards.

To everyone that wants to kick these kids off the team for being immature and irresponsible. I offer this, all of you are hypocrites. Each of you knows, that if they were having a great season all of you would be screaming for leniency, claiming that their just kids and kicking them off the team doesn’t teach them anything. But because they aren’t playing up to the standards on the field that we are accustomed to we want to crucify their every action. Also, I supppose none of you are parents who have kids that do dumb stuff and then try to hide it! Because your all fine upstanding pillars of our community, who have never had transgressions of any kind. Whatever!! And let’s not forget that these atheletes that you want kicked off the team you so love, attend the # 1 party school in the nation according to the Princeton review published earlier this year. That tells me that this is a campus wide problem that only becomes real when an athelete or coach is involved. What this suggests to me is that their are students all across the UGA campus making bad decisions, and most likely having run-ins with the law (i.e. traffic tickets, under age drinking, disorderly conduct, etc.), yet where is the public outcry to expel them from school? I’ll tell you where it is. It’s non-existent, that’s because this behavior is considered normal for college students, or when it’s your son or daughter whose name just popped up on the police blotter, then theres a rush to squash the situation to avoid any public embarrassment to the family. But these student-athelets can’t do that. Why? Because of overzealous fans that try to live vicarously through the sports teams we love. It’s okay to be passionate about our sports team, but to kick him off the team for a traffic ticket or even a failure to appear, c’mon man!
And to the guy who said that these guys feel a sense of entitlement, that’s probably true, but don’t forget where they get that from. It comes from people like us who praise these kids all their lives because they help our teams win.

Coach Richt-

Heres a serious idea-Instead of scanning all of the counties looking for violations how about implementing a policy in which players report any violations to the athletic dept/coaches. This allows involvement from the beginning and does not let it get to this point. THAT is helping these young men learn how to be responsible-If they do not report violations, then kick them off the team, end of story!

UGA DAWG, GT Bob, ugaalumn81, and Harry and the rest of you CMR/UGA haters…I reckon this stuff bears repeating:

“…Richt acknowledged the two-game ban reflects a tougher approach to punishing players for off-field incidents. “Oh yeah, no doubt about it,” Richt said. “But they knew that.”

“…Richt says staff has been checking players’ driver’s licenses on monthly basis…”
“…Four of the players were dismissed from the team. Another decided to transfer after being suspended for six games…”
“…“I expect all our players to take care of their responsibilities on and off the field… My goal is for Caleb to learn a lesson and for other players to learn from his experience.”
Several players said the team is well aware that off-field problems will have serious consequences.
“Enough has happened that I think the team is tired of it, the coaching staff is tired of it and the athletic director and everyone associated with the University of Georgia is [too],” quarterback Aaron Murray said.

He suspended Caleb for the NEXT two games. You can’t put off punishment. Punishment has to be immediate, not at the public’s whim. If all this occurred this week, he would have missed the Kentucky and Flawduh games.

Not to mention, CMR instituted and still requires the “CHAMPS/Life Skills” program. He’s had on-going programs since day one. The players must accept responsibility for their actions. The off-field problems are not from lack of effort from Coach Richt and the rest of the staff. He has NOT lost control; that’s asinine.

Not to mention, did you know that UGA has more academic award recipients than ANY university in the South? CMR is one of only seven head coaches who has won 90 or more Div 1 football games in his first nine seasons. I’m not sure which team or which bowl, but the UGA Football Media Guide says, “…The Bulldogs…took money from a recent bowl gifts package and…purchased approximately $3000 worth of electronics for the Athens Boys and Girls Club. There’s a lot of good going on with the program too. If it’s all wins and losses to you, root for a pro team.

Jeff Benedict, Sports Illustrated …

“…So far this year through August, 125 college and professional football and basketball players have been arrested on…misdemeanors involving violence, weapons or substance abuse. That’s pretty astounding. At this rate, the number will be up around 200 by year’s end…Seventy of the 125 players arrested so far this year play college football. What’s interesting is the way these cases are handled by the coaches.
Oregon star running back LaMichael James wasn’t in the lineup for the Ducks’ season-opening 72-0 win over New Mexico. Last season James set a Pac-10-record by rushing for 1,546 yards as a freshman. But during this offseason James was charged with menacing, strangulation and assault after an altercation with his former girlfriend. In March he pled guilty to a single misdemeanor harassment charge and was sentenced to 10 days in jail, but didn’t serve any time. Instead, James was permitted to wear an electronic surveillance device. Oregon coach Chip Kelly suspended James for one game.
Compare James’s situation to that of Oregon State redshirt lineman Tyler Thomas. On Aug. 22 police in Corvallis, Ore., say they found Thomas naked and intoxicated in a stranger’s home. When ordered down on the ground, Thomas reportedly went into a three-point stance and lunged at the officers, who fired stun guns to subdue him. Thomas was charged with criminal trespass, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. Although he has yet to be convicted of anything, he was dismissed from the team following his arrest.
So why did Thomas get the boot for an alcohol-induced arrest while James got a slap on the wrist for pleading guilty to harassing a woman? Look no further than the Facebook page “LaMichael James for Heisman.” Clearly, better athletes get better outcomes, both in the criminal justice system and on college campuses.
Some other things jumped out at me when I reviewed the 125 cases. One is the seriousness and frequency of the cases involving student-athletes. For instance, during the last week of July alone, 10 college football and basketball players were implicated in incidents that involved serious threats to public safety…

It is NOT impossible to check each players status on the DMV. There are programs for your computer that can be structured with every players License number that would run all the time so if anything came up, would pop up as soon as it was listed. Insurance companies can look up a driving record in seconds. I’m sure someone at UGA can program 1 small computer to run 24-7.

I realize my opinions are just that….mine. But I would point out to Coach Richt that raising younguns who are on scholarship is not the name of the game.Citizenship is important but not at the expense of the program. He is employed by UGA to win ball games, to bring in money to the school for use to support other programs. His goal is to produce winning teams. He does not contribute to that goal when he suspends a player for one, two or more games.; he is punishing the UGA football program and the other players who do their jobs and stay out of trouble ands go all out to win. While suspensions are required, there should be other things to deny a player who needs correcting for infractions. Unlike workers who get suspended, players do not lose their pay or entitlements, so the only effect is to stay healthy for another game or two. All scholarship atheletes are obligated to conform to the rules as all other players and people are. If they want to dance, they have to pay the fiddler. Their choice. Stay straight or go home.

To getagrip – Get A Grip!

I’m not a hypocrite – I just don’t believe in preferential treatment that favors anyone over anyone else. Of the 4 players kicked off the team this year. What was their status coming in to the season? What were their infractions?

Do you know what contempt of court is? Is this not a serious offense? You suggest its no big deal; ask a judge what he thinks about a person who shows contempt for the courts and laws of this nation. Report your findings on this subject back to all of us why don’t ya!

what we really have is a problem in society as a whole. Unfortunately, the elite, the wealthy, or the privileged are given preferential treatment and others are judged too harshly. Parents, coaches, teachers, the courts and administrators are too lenient with the children of today. “we don’t want to hurt their feelings”, We don’t want to make them feel bad about themselves” and many other excuses are thrown about as ways to keep from damaging a child’s self-esteem or feelings.

All this is bunk. We need to return to personal responsibility – meaning you must take responsibility for your own actions.

CMR just lost alot of respect from alot of people. He sits CK down for 2 games, calling it “Fair”. I think the punishment surprised no one, because he thinks he has a good enough team to win the next 2 games, but, oh no, we cannot suspend him for Florida. We need him to try to win the game. No, FAIR would have been 3 games including Florida. That would have made a positive statement. The statement CMR made was anything but positive, and that is the sad part. He still puts the discipline of the players second.
One day maybe he will come up to Les Miles standard. Remember, Miles kicked his starting QB off the team, thus hurting his chances to have a really good season. He put the welfare of his team second, and put discipline first. That will be the undoing of CMR… lax discipline both on and off the field, and they feed of each other.

Well it’s good to see that after 9 pages of postings, we’ve finally figured this one out. Fact is, there are a lot of stupid ways to solve this problem–from fire them all to forgive them all. But in the end, we’ve put CMR in a tough position. We’ve made the off-field behavior the reason for the on-field failings. But in sports, like most things in life, a thin sliver of performance doesn’t necessarily have a direct connection to morality. I’ve known a lot of brave and excellent young soldiers who still manage to do a lot of really stupid, sometimes immoral, things when they’re not in uniform. Maybe what we’re seeing are really two different problems. Just because they seem to have a common description, lack of discipline, doesn’t mean they have a common cause. If CMR’s job is to win games, then let’s hold him accountable for making these young men athletes on Saturdays. If his other job is to turn them into good citizens, then lets have the Athletic Dept and the Administration treat them as students. I hold CMR accountable to tell the right folks in the University to do their jobs as they would for any other student in getting these players minds right. CMR can be an example, but he’s still a hired hand with a job to do on the field. It’s the UGA leadership that should be determining what it will tolerate and what it won’t and than meting out the punishment. They need to step up and stop hiding behind the football coach. Let him win or lose games. Make them decide what kind of student shows up to play.
