Boss Bailey’s speech to Dogs: ‘He pretty much called them out’

ATHENS – That must have been quite a speech Boss Bailey made to the Georgia football team on Friday.

Here’s the background: Bailey, a former Georgia linebacker, first-team All-SEC as a senior in 2002, was honorary captain for Saturday’s game against Tennessee. Honorary captains typically are asked to speak to the team on the day before the game. Bailey did so in the team meeting room at the Butts-Mehre building on Friday afternoon.

Here’s what Mark Richt had to say Saturday about what Bailey had to say Friday:

“Boss, he pretty much called them out. But he did it in a way where it was very compassionate. It was very obvious that he loves Georgia, obvious that he loves those guys, but he felt like he needed to tell them that they weren’t playing ball the way ball should be played here at Georgia.

“He mentioned some things to the defense. He mentioned a couple of things to the offense. But the thing that stood out the most was his passion and his sincerity in his voice that he loves Georgia.

“You know, there’s a lot of times that we as coaches are trying to help these guys understand what it means to be a Bulldog. We try as many things as we can to emphasize that point. But Boss exemplified what it means to be a Bulldog in that moment in time.  There have been a lot of good honorary-captain speeches and talks and all those kinds of things, but there was none better than that because here’s what they needed to hear and it was done in a way they knew he cared about them. We’re really thankful Boss came and did what he did for us.”

And here’s what A.J. Green had to say about what Bailey had to say:

“It touched me real deep. He had tears in his eyes. His voice was just cracking, the way he has so much passion about Georgia football. We came out here and did it for him.”

Does UGA actually believe they achieved something with a win of pitiful UTK?

As an alumni of UGA and just as passionate as Bailey, I along with many more have been giving the same speech since the South Carolina game. I’m glad they listened to someone. What amazes me is that it took Baileys speech for some to finally feel what it means to some of us to go to school at Georgia. Why isn’t the whole team understanding that being at UGA is bigger than themselves , that it’s all about being part of a team ,school, and student body.

Yeah, it was meaningless.

That’s got to have been one of the dumbest questions I’ve ever seen posted in these blogs and there have been millions.

Congratulations Dawgs, thanks for accepting our gifts. Just remember when you come to Knoxy Top next year, we may not be as generous. At least you can enjoy for a year. Ol’ Smokey’s not too happy when a Dawg shows up in his house!

Amen 76! And thanks Boss! Hammer I don’t know if they did or not. We’ll just have to see the rest of the season. I’m just happy to see effort and improvement at this point. Boss gave us a gift. Now let’s see what the coaches can do with it.

A win over UT is not that big a deal …. unless you’re 1-4 and 0-3 in the SEC coming in! It looks like this is shaping up to be a crazy SEC regular season. UGA just needs to keep their heads down and work like heck to beat this week’s opponent (no matter what week it is). It may be possible to still salvage something of a respectable season if they do that.

Looks like there will not be an SEC team in the NCG this year. LSU and Auburn will lose at least one game. Hope SC wins the rest of their games so they can get to Atlanta and probably play Bama again. Too bad UGA was so down this year. Can still be a spoiler but will have to play like they did yesterday to be in each game.

I wonder if LSU feels the same about a win over UTK. If Tennessee is as bad as some seem to think, then it’s good UGA won so big.
I’m very happy for the unsung hero…Russ. It was his last game as a mascot. Way to go out a winner.

Glad Boss Bailey came in when he did. Let me make sure I understand this. CMR and his staff can’t get this bunch to play decent football, them Boss Bailey comes in and they play much better.
Granted they were playing a very “troubled Tenn team” but Ga. did win. If “Boss” was the difference here we have more problems in Athen than I thought. I am glad though Boss was able to show some passion as he understands what being a Bulldog means. Our current coaching staff and most of the “team” DO NOT!!!!!

After reading some of these comments, some of you are just idiots. True football fans know what Boss Baily did the day BEFORE the game was very inspirational!! What the guy did was not motivate these guys to play better but he gave them a light. That light was too help these youngers guys understand the FEELING of how they should be playing on game days and why people want to be a “Georgia Bulldog”.
Just like those of us who have been born and raised in Valdosta. There was a documentary done in 1989 to show why kids wanted to be a Valdosta Wildcat ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Otv8pCPA7f4 ) . Once these guys understand WHY each of them came to Georgia then they SHOULD have the feeling like the needed compete better than what they had been doing.

Look, we beat an SEC East foe 41-14, and yes, I will take that all day long.

Did we learn much? Tough to say.

Aaron Murray is good RIGHT NOW, that much is evident. Ironic that coming into the season I was convinced our running game would carry us until our passing game got up to speed, but it is completely the other way around.

I am concerned with our ball security and ability to run the ball effectively and consistently.

The D played inspired football, albeit against an inferior Tennessee offense. Definitely liked the pressure and the consistent tackling.

Did I learn much? We’ll see. But a win, is a win, is a win, is a win….you get the picture.

Go Dawgs!

Hammered Catholic, no this game may not mean that much if UT is pitiful, but who really knows what SEC teams are for real at this point in the season? In recent weeks about every team has been up or down. Was this the same UT team that practically beat LSU, who just last night beat UF? I’d say the win is meaningful, hopefully, as a building block toward future success. It would seem this season is more of a rebuilding year than we all had hoped.

All of you guys who are downplaying the win yesterday against an “inferior” Vol team…one of their “inferior” teams handed us us our butts last year. I bet you would get an argument from LSU about how inferior they are. Every week we have made progress…may – just maybe – we turned a corner Saturday. After watching LSU and FLorida play Saturday I’m glad we don’t play LSU this year – their front defensive line ate the Gators offensive line for lunch all game long. they were awesome.

@Catholic Needs Hammering,

Yes it means a lot to beat UT. To jumpstart wins the rest of the way, boost morale, help with recruiting, get the support back from those who doubted, and know that playing passionate and mistake-free football, a 2-4 team can still be 6-0 the rest of the year. There is a much bigger picture than what your eyes can see!

This is not an endorsement of our 2010 team. I still think we are woefully inadequate and an average at best team. But the rest of our schedule doesn’t look like anything special either for the most part. The SEC is definitely down. Florida is very beatable. Auburn is good but not great. Tech is…well, Tech. If we keep plugging away we can finish with a good enough record to make the Chicken Bowl or something. That’s something I really didn’t think was possible a couple of days ago.

Thank you, Boss, for coming in and giving the little talk. Let’s not get too delusional thinking that’s what brought the win. But, it’s appreciated and the Dawgs seemed to take it to heart. Good for them.

Yes, you can downplay the win as much as you want. But Dawgs fans celebrate this win and know that, “It’s great to be a Bulldog on Saturday night!”

Yes, it’s just one win…but it’s still a win right when it was needed and practically demanded. No, it doesn’t mean we’ll win the rest; but it’s a great stepping stone. Yesterday also showed that teams like Bama and Flawduh CAN be beat.

Go Dawgs! Get ready now for Vandy and let’s play some Georgia football!
