ATHENS – Despite Georgia’s 1-4 record, Vegas oddsmakers have the Bulldogs as a heavy favorite over Tennessee on Saturday in Sanford Stadium. One line had the Dogs as a 13-point favorite earlier this week.
“We’re a 13-point favorite?” coach Mark Richt replied, incredulously, when I brought that up. “Wow! Hope they’re right. Are you kidding me? I don’t look at those things, I really don’t, but wow.”
By Tuesday afternoon, Georgia had dropped to a 12-point favorite.
Tennessee was a 16-point underdog to LSU last week but lost by just two points on the final play of the game.
The Vols, like the Bulldogs, are seeking their first SEC victory of the season. Tennessee is 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the conference. This is the first Georgia-Tennessee game since 1906 that both teams enter with a losing record.

Here is why you lose a football game. It is not because a player made a mistake that Richt is not responsible for. Richt is responsible for everything the players do. Regardless, this particular fumble was due to Richt’s highly predictable decision to run up the middle to set up a field goal. Colorado, I, and my dead grandma saw this coming from 1000 miles away. They blew up the play, forced a fumble, and won the game. Blame lies squarely and only with Mark Richt, who is responsible for the terrible, predictable playcalling (and why would you want to set up Walsh for a 40+ yard FG when he already missed one? Go for the TD. Go for the win.), responsible for recruiting good players, and responsible for how they execute. Richt and Richt alone is responsible. Here’s what Colorado’s DC had to say on this horrendous decision.
From ESPN.COM:
During a timeout in the waning minutes and with the Georgia Bulldogs already in range for a game-winning field goal, Colorado defensive coordinator Ron Collins decided to turn linebacker B.J. Beatty loose on a blitz.
“I told him, ‘Let’s run it,” Beatty said. “Because we knew they were going to try to run the ball, milk the clock and kick a field goal. I knew I had the opportunity to come off the edge and maybe disrupt the hand-off.”
Lining up with the Buffs clinging to a 29-27 lead, Beatty was just hoping for the Bulldogs to run the ball, and sure enough, it played out exactly like he envisioned.
Beatty stripped Caleb King just as he got the handoff from quarterback Aaron Murray at the Buffaloes’ 30-yard line and he held King back while teammate Jon Major smothered the loose ball.

unless they learn to stop over pursuing and break down to tackle on defense, saturday will be another challenge to watch. And that’s just on the defensive side of the ball. Offense is just stagnant and ineffective. No other way to put it.

you are an idiot. yes richt is ultimately responsible but bobo calls the plays. Running up the middle to set up a field goal for the win is as basic as football gets. If they had thrown it in the endzone for a pic you would have written about the horrendous decision to go for a TD when all they needed was a field goal…God get a life… idiot

I think 13 points is about right. UT has a horrible offense and UGA will have AJ Green for the whole game. AM is going to be a special quarterback and nobody in college football can cover AJ. As long as he plays the whole game and CMB throws the ball his way UGA will score. They look like a completely different offense when he was on the field against Colorado

DB’s not covering the pitch man, getting beat deep… that’s coaching. Getting beaten at the line of scrimmage all the time… that’s coaching and training. RB’s that can’t help but fumble at the most critical of times… that’s coaching. I personally think what happens Saturday will tell us all we need to know about what can or can’t be done with this coaching staff.

Revisionist history? From what I saw of the play Colorado had little to do with the fumble! King simply did not handle the handoff and hit the ball with his knee as he was running. His own knee caused the fumble nothing from Colorado. Why credit the opposition with a great play when it was in fact a disastrous play from the UGA tailback??? See if its on YouTube and see for yourself.

Tenn may have a bad offense but they scored 14 on Lsu, who’s defense is much better than ours. So I see them scoring about 20-27 against us. And I don’t see our offense scoring more than 24-30 against them. So I would take the points if I was a betting man. My prediction is uga wins

Prediction: A recap of the past three meetings with Tenn. GA was punked by an inferior Tenn team in 07, unconvincing win in 08, and punked again by an inferior Tenn team in 09. My prediction for Saturday is that these pathetic Dawgs will come out and play “Dawg Ball”. “Dawg Ball” is the new GA football. It consists of fumbles, penalties, no passion, getting hit in the mouth and not responding, terrible pass coverage, horrific tackling, and overall bonehead mistakes that get you beat. Tenn wins by two TD’s. BOOK IT!

Here is the word-for-word transcription from the Big 12/Colorado/West Coast? announcers on that play:
“Murray under center, ball’s in the center of the field..Buffs in a 3 man front, turns, hands off, King..tried the flea-flicker..the ball is loose, and Colorado’s got it! John Major recovers! What in the world kind of play was that by Georgia? It looked like he was trying to flip it back to the quarterback in a kind of flea-flicker, he got hit, ball popped out and Major recovered. And Georgia, who has been under the microscope by its fans, just called a stupid play and turned the ball over to the Buffaloes.”

Listen if Crowell or any other recruit does not want to come to Georgia…so be it. If Paul Johnson can win with three star recruits at Yech, then I damn well expect the Dawgs to win with whatever players they recruit.
As for the RB from Columbus not wanting to come to Georgia because players are arrested for drinking, he is probably safer at BAMA. Cause you damn well know there is underage drinking going on at Tuscaloosa but funny no arrests. And dont tell me it ain’t happening because that is a bunch of BS.
It happens at every school. When I was the manager of my college basketball team, we lost in the regionals because 3/4ths of our team was drinking and smoking hootie weed, and banging cheerleaders in the hotel before the game. The coaches said it was my job to watch out for the players and make sure they were clean for the game. I had a better chance of building an ark and collecting 2 of every species on the planet then making sure they were sober at gametime.

Man Enough, if memory serves, didn’t your coach finish the season # 2 in the country a couple years ago. I heard Reese Davis say the other day that Mark Richt had won more games in his 9 years at Georgia than 97% of all other NCAA coaches. That’s not luck.
FlaDawg, Les Miles began his career at LSU with Saban-recruited, Saban-trained players. He then won a NC with the same players. After that he went 8-5 and 9-4. Sound similar to Mark Richt’s record that everyone is complaining about? I never hear any real Georgia fans calling for Richt’s resignation. It’s usually trolls on these boards who pretend to be UGA fans because they are always getting beat by teams he coaches. Take Georgia Tech, Richt and Florida State beat them like a drum. Now he’s still beating them at Georgia nearly every year. They hate him. Don’t sweat it. you’ve got a good coach who’s just been snake-bit the past year or two. He’ll be back. He won’t beat Bama again, but he’ll be back.

“FlaDawg, Les Miles began his career at LSU with Saban-recruited, Saban-trained players. He then won a NC with the same players. After that he went 8-5 and 9-4.”
Saban’s last season at LSU was in 2004 which means the players on the 2007 squad were freshmen in 2004. I give Nick credit for recruiting them but I doubt he much to do with their development since he only had them one season. And most of them redshirted anyway.

It’s the battle for the bottom barrel of the SEC East!
Richt has every right to be shocked, the last time the Vols came to Sanford they beat the $hit outta Ga.
Tn has the toughest schedule in the SEC East; all of their losses have come from ranked teams. Georgia? Meh…

When is CMR gonna grow some kahunas and stop acting so surprised about everything. “Aw Shucks” does not make it in todays FBS, nor the SEC! Something has to be happening on the home front for CMR….how do the wheels fall so far off so quick!?!?!?! It’s gonna be another one of those “Change a coordinator” and give em’ another year…Screw that…get rid of the whole freaking staff…before it is another 6 month obstacle of trying to hire a new coordinator..First of all, no respectable, great Coordinator will want to come to Georgia with the Head Coach already in the hot seat…Secondly, we are going to “once again” lose out on the top talent at the Head Coaching Position…Muschamp/Harbaugh/Petersen/Smart!

Here is a big difference between Richt and a coach like Nick Saban:
Saban would not even acknowledge the line spread.
Maybe Richt needs to watch that “Nick Saban: Gamechanger” movie. He might learn a thing or two.

I’d take UT all day. 12 is WAY too much. LSU is VASTLY overrated and this spread says as much. Still, UGA hasn’t proven they can get it done and at least UT has shown they’ll play hard.
Field goal wins it. Just not sure for who.

gcs, Richt was asked a direct question and he answered. If Saban was asked a direct question about being a 21 point favorite over USC (I actually don’t know the spread) he’d answer.
The reason it was asked is because for a 1-4 team who just lost to Colorado, it seems a little crazy to favored by 12 over a team who almost beat a top 15 team at LSU.

If CKing keeps running and doesn’t make that flee-flicker motion the fumble would not have occured and we probably gain a couple of yards. Not a fantastic defensive play at all. In a way, who cares if everybody in the stadium knew what was coming. In a situation where a few more yards for a GW field goal is in order, all CKing needed to do was run hard and run forward. Play-calling was NOT a factor on that play. Lousy fundamental execution was the factor!

Richard is looking at it from the defensive side. “Defenses are supposed to stop the offense from setting up a fg for a win. It did not take a genius to tell that was what UGA was doing. Therefore the Co defense put pressure on the run to force the turnover..If King had not tried to reverse his direction due to the DE he may not have fumbled the ball…No defense is going to just sit there and let the other team do what they wish….UGA definitely was not going to pass in that situation…Good coaching technique, scouting, and planning on UC’s part. Go Dawgs. Sometimes the truth hurts regardless of how knowledgeablte people think they are.

I wonder what would happen in baseball if you could strip the ball with contact from say a second baseman while he was trying to tag you. My point is that jerking the ball out of a players hand or trying to knock it out of his hands is a bunch of bull. I call it stealing not a fumble and this should be ruled as a penalty. It is a disgrace to the game because it is just like a bully in school snatching something from another classmate hands and stealing. It is a total disgrace to the game and makes it look cheap. A fumble is a fumble but not stealing the ball.

Mr. Dawson – first it appears that you have graduated the elementary school for football – we all know your kind. First – I would not disagree that Richt is ultimately responsible for the football program – but to say that one play call, which resulted in a fumble was total Richts fault is outrageous. My question to you is what play would you have called that would have ensured success and a win? Had the back not fumbled and a field goal was made – Richt and the play call would have made the headlines and Richt would have been the Hero. However, he is now the Goat because it failed. There was a lot more things that happened during the game that caused the Dawgs to lose other than this play call. If I was the AD – you would be fired as the Arm Chair QB. Hind site and a 31,000 foot view is always 20/20.

13 points is too much, we can’t beat Tennessee when we’re loaded. But I do think we win this game by a field goal or less. They are equally as bas as we are and Richt always finds a way to salvage the season enough from being run out of Athens. So this may be the game that saves his neck once again.

First, this is insane there is no way that we are favored by 13, I would expect Georgia to be favored by 1 means its a toss up! Second it was foolish of Bobo to run the ball like that we were indeed in the range of long field goal against Colorado and that is not a given so we should have been more aggressive like what Arkansas did to us in the last minute. why should you run the ball up the middle like that especially when you know the opposing team expecting it and for the last 3 games this play was a disaster! no blocking what soever, which means the play will either end with negative or no gain. Bobo should be kicked off the team and Richt should handle the play calling. enough with this crap!

Congrats UGA, you also join Clemson as one of those Southern schools that won a fluky title in the early 80’s, creating a ginormous base of retard fans who still expect another one nearly three decades after the fact. Whie I agree that Bobo is an idiot, there was nothing wrong with that play call. All you’re trying to do is get a few yards closer, run the clock and kick the field goal to win the game. Throwing would have been too risky. You don’t expect a fumble on simple running play.

First off,
Nobody should be talking about point spreads until Thursday at the earliest! There is just too much that can happen between now and Saturday( injuries, weather, suspensions, media perception etc.) that can affect the outcome of a game one way or another. So its dumb to make predictions right now.
Second, that spread will go down by gametime, probably to 11.5.
Third, you got to consider the current state of each team. UGA while 1-4, is clearly a different team with AJ Green in the lineup. While they still lost to Colorado, I don’t think this team is devasted by the loss. On the contrary, with their best player back in the lineup, I think these guys are looking to get off the snide. And I think this offense will explode eventually seeing that Murray is looking for a signature win and AJ is looking for redemption. With that being said, this defense is just bad! They actually try, but they are just bad! So the offense will have to flow through Murray which is a tough position for this team to be in since he’s still learning.
For Tennessee, I actually think they have some talent, but its VERY Raw. They played LSU tough, which is a VERY underachieving 5-0 team. This team, like UGA, has yet to win an SEC game. And the way they lost last week was a heartbreaker. College kids tend to have a tough time overcoming a tough loss and usually play like crap the next week, like what happened with UGA after they lost to Arkansas and then lost again to MSU in a lackluster effort. The Vols have a baby football team and are basically learning how to win all over again. They have lost to some tough competition, with all 3 of their losses coming to ranked teams. However, they have a chance because UGA defense is so bad! Unfortunately for them, their defense is equally horrible!
So right now, I’m leaning towards the Dawgs. But again, a LOT can happen between now and kickoff, so we’ll have to wait and see.

I think people are misinterpreting what a “line” is – it doesn’t (necessarily) mean that some “expert” (or panel) EXPECTS y’all to win by 13, they’re just trying to balance their bets & @ that point in time that’s what it took to get actual gamblers to put $ on Tennessee side of scale. it’s like stock quotes – price of last trade tells you next to nothing about overall value of a company, just what someone had to offer/bid to fill an order at that instant in time. all that said, I wouldn’t pretend to know who’s going to win this game – I think dawgs’ backs are more against the wall & they’re @ home so I’d probably go w/them but this game is just as likely to be a 21+ blowout in either direction as it is to be decided by a fumble and/or penalty on a 2-pt conversion in the 2nd OT. bottom line, betting on this game is a roulette wheel – no telling where the ball will land… (full disclosure – 2nd generation GT season tix holder since ‘99)

This weeks game will have one team playing “lights out” and the other will play like their heads are stuck in the “hedges”. I am amazed at the “loyal” Dawg fans coming on these boards and not giving their team a chance. If you line them up man to man UGA has better talent all over the field. The question this week is which coaching staff handles their team better. My money is on TN and Dooley. @BamaDave – “icedawg, Georgia Tech used to be in the SEC, but Bobby Dodd abandoned ship because Bear Bryant was wearing him out every time they played. Not to mention getting every player that Tech went after. Vandy would be a super-power in the ACC and win the conference every single year.”
I don’t know what that has to do with this blog, but here is the record of Bryant vs. Dodd in the 6 years they played in the SEC, 3 games decided by 2 points or less. The year that Bryant didn’t “wear out’ Ga. Tech Joe Namath threw 4 INTs, including one from Ga. Tech’s 14 yard line in the final minute. It cost Alabama the 1962 poll national championship, their 1st loss in 27 games.
1958 Alabama, 17-8
1959 Alabama, 9-7
1960 Alabama, 16-15
1961 Alabama, 10-0
1962 Ga. Tech, 7-6
1963 Alabama, 27-11

Carolina on my Mind Little Dooley does not need Papa’s money. Actually DD will make in 5 years what Papa Dooley made his whole career.

The reason they had to make this a 12:30 game is because both the TN and GA police will not allow any of the players out after dark.

I know Les Miles coaches like an idiot but Tenn. really played well against LSU. They played hard like they wanted to win. I just don’t see a 12 point spread with UGA winning. We play like we don’t want to win-we have zero enthusiasm. I really think there is a better chance “no one” on the UGA team “gets arrested” than we have at winning Saturday-Hope I am wrong!!! But I don’t think so.

Maybe the game will be decided in the last 12 seconds, but neither team will win by more than 3.

Wake me when the poodles actually beat a FBS team this year. That’s right 0-4 vs FBS teams.

For those of excited about Georgia being a 13 point favorite, don’t be, ther’es bad news there too. Tim reported this week it has dropped to only a 12 point favorite against Tennesssee. It’s already dropped by a whole point!!!

I think the people that are calling for Mark Richt to be fired are short sighted and like so many people in the world, just extremely impatient. There are many examples of coaches that struggle for a couple of years or even a decade, only to go on to become a coaching icon. He has earned a chance to turn things around even if that take 2-3 years. Has all remnamts of loyalty vanished from the college football fanbase? Richt is a good man and he didn’t just forget how to coach all of a sudden. There may be some changes that need to be made. For instance, it’s difficult for a young man to be an OC if he has family. The children are small and the hours coaching football especially at a big program like UGA are extremely long. You need someone older at OC. However, Bobo is smart and already becoming experienced. Give him a few more years and we will probably have the best OC around.

Sad; we are talking about 2 programs that for years were the gold standard in the SEC. Unfortunately, everyone thinks you have to recruit from the available THUGS in order to field a team. Both programs need to get a grip. Check out Boise State: no thugs and a winning program. P.S. Their headcoach runs the offense. Too many Thugs and too many coaches who don’t know their business= what we have right now. I’d rather see a loosing season than to glorify garbage.
