Richt on late fumble: ‘That’s as basic of a play as we’ve got’

BOULDER, Colo. — Comments by Georgia coach Mark Richt after the Bulldogs’ latest loss, 29-27 to Colorado on Saturday night:

On the fumble on Georgia’s final drive: “That’s as basic of a play as we’ve got. You say, ‘What’s our No. 1 running play?’, and that was it. They got penetration, obviously, but you’ve still got to be able to secure that ball for a 4- or 5-yard loss. You’ve got to hold on to it, but we didn’t. They made a play.”

On Caleb King’s night otherwise [100 yards rushing on 12 carries]: “Yeah, Caleb played real good. He broke a lot of tackles. [On the fumble] I think he was trying to make a spin move as he was getting the ball. It was his instinct to try and make somebody miss. But you’ve got to get the ball first, and we just didn’t do that. Caleb gave great effort; he gave great runs. When the ball was secured to him, he wrapped it up real well. Unfortunately on the exchange, he didn’t.”

On the team’s morale: “Am I worried about it? It’s hard. It’s not easy. But I have a lot of faith in our guys. They’ll stay together; they’ll keep working. No one’s going to give in or quit, and nobody’s going to do a negative thing within our ranks. I’m confident that everybody on this football tam is going to keep working. … Losing is not good, but there are a lot of good things that come out of it as far as effort and attitude of the group. There are a lot of things that I can point to that the coaches will be proud of these games for. But the bottom line in football is wins and losses, and right now we haven’t gotten one in a while.”

On A.J. Green’s return: “It’s nice to have A.J. You could see tonight just how talented he is and how dangerous a player he is. He’s a momentum changer, and he did [change momentum]. We reversed the momentum of the game, and … he made our offense spark. He’s definitely a special player and a special kid…. There are plays you can call that go to a guy, but we didn’t go that way because of protection or coverage, so that’s where we started with him.”

I wish I knew how to react. Is this just something that happens? I mean, luck is random and when things don’t go well, they can really snowball. But does it only happen to bad coaches? I am trying not to over-react. Richt has averaged 10 wins a year his first 9 seasons. But the last 3 have been progressively disappointing. I don’t want to knee-jerk, but this is inexplicable.

I’m going to leave the coach-bashing for others…plenty of that going around, and perhaps deservedly so.

To say that I’m frustrated would be an understatement of the first order. How many personal fouls does Vance Cuff have to commit before he gets the hook?

Why is it that we don’t have a running back that can hold onto the ball in critical situations? At that point, the ONE thing we couldn’t afford was a turnover.

It seems to me that one of the biggest problems with our defense is not the 3-4 vs. 4-3. Rather, it’s that the other team’s receivers are WIDE open much of the time.

How is it that the most experienced offensive line in the SEC (in terms of career starts) can’t open a hole up the middle (and why do we keep calling runs up the middle when they’re not there)?

The only thing that can salvage this season is beating Tech. At this point, I have no confidence that we will be any teams other than Vandy and Idaho (or is it Idaho State?). But to beat Tech despite the sorry state of the program certainly would be sweet.

A. J. Green owes UGA another year of football. Its the least he could do for crippling us without that immediate threat outside reciever for our first three SEC games. Given, if it gets Bobo to step down to QB coach, and let Richt bring in a serious offensive mind who can use Georgia’s fast talent in some good spread formations, with VERY FEW silly gimmick plays, especially not with the game on the line, then as a *true* Dawg Fan, I am all for it. I have no problem with Bobo’s coaching, as he is a terrific QB coach, but his play-calling is borderline absurd. Run up the middle twice and play action pass/screen on 3rd and long more times than i can count. We need a little shake-up. Mark Richts gotta start axing his buddies, as they are not cutting it. The strength coach Van also.. We look weak and disoriented. My tech will look pretty silly when one of our few wins this year will be against them..

Sir, I first thought about getting rid of Coach Bobo, but seeing him ripped into the offensive line and telling them to “suck it up” and play hard for four qtrs it was good to see that, I thought about getting rid of the offensive line coach, but seeing him lay into the line and going off on them WOW. Now I would get rid of Strenght and condition coach, to many times the players would play one or two plays and asking to come out, Gamble was beat so many times tonight he was tired and out of place, I looked at the players and some of them looked like wow they were not serious enough for me, THE PLAYERS NEED TO ADOPT AN MEAN KICK BUTT ATTITUDE, Something has to be done with the dbs being beat and not looking up for the ball, its sad MS, I think ga coaches need to convert the fastest guy(s) and put them at the corner positions.

Basic play my A&&. I was at the game … that was a trick play that sadly went awry. And it should have never been called. We had the ball already within Walsh’s range — and we go for a “flea-flicker” tricker-ation play? It’s a long year already — come on 2011.
I was also amazed that CU students rushed the field after beating a 1-4 team … some of the drunk ones were just as obnoxious as some of our drunk fans … and there were some that had some class.

Screw the fumble play. We pay a DC 3 quarters of a million, and the defense absolutely sucks. God folks this was Colorado, you know that football beast of a power, not. The defense is terrible, and the offense is pitifal. We have had top 10 recruiting classes 4 of the past 5 years and the other was rated 16. Problem is we recruit all 4 and 5 “star” atheletes who have very little character. Cuff, 3 personal fouls in one game…sit his sorry ass on the bench for 3 or 4 games and when you do play him again tell him, another performance like that and he will never see the field again. Ben Jones and his cheap shot last week, God if the had happened to one of my Dawgs I would have been outraged, but come to think of it I am outraged that I am pulling for kids that take cheap shots and play like bush leaguers, and thugs. Fumbles, have you had enough in big situations? Selfish and selling jerseys? Again, character. We need to start really doing some intense homework on these kids we recruit. I would rather have a bunch of high character 2 and 3 star kids that are thankful for the privilage to wear the UGA uniform, that are coachable and will play with a passion that I am still waiting to see from all our 4 and 5 star recruits. The kind of kids that made up the true junkyard dawgs, that would “bring it” week in and week out and would run through a brick wall for coach Erk. Instead we have a bunch of undisciplined gansta’s and thugs just using us as a syop off for the NFL. I do not give a damn about the NFL, I do care about UGA. So Richt, if you are to turn this around, quit recruiting from Newbergs list and find some real character kids that are coachable and will play with passion. Also, as much as I hate to say it, I think the DC is not what we expected and certainly not what we needed to this point.

I gave UGA a 50-50 shot to win the game so I flipped a coin and we lost so I didn’t go to the game. Twenty miles from the stadium and I couldn’t talk myself into it. I did state earlier in the week if Bobo made the trip I wouldn’t go. You know what is worse, Tenn will beat the dogs next week unless they get lucky and old lady luck hasn’t been on our side if it had even being outplayed in a game or two we would be 5-0 not 1-5. If CMR don’t fire Bobo, well he doesn’t have a choice if he wants to keep his job. That’s my opinion.

What's going on

October 3rd, 2010

As the great Marvin Gaye used to sing “What’s Going On?’”. WE LOST to a team that is 90th in the country (Div 1A) in Passing Yards, 68th in Rushing, 96th in Points For, and 59th in Points Against, and LOST TO CALIFORNIA 52-7. WOW. CU has not won back-to-back games in over 2 years. But yet, I keep hearing UGA fans say “but we lost ONLY b/c of a fumble” or “we lost the first 3 games b/c we didn’t have AJ” or “we lost b/c Ealey can’t hang on to the ball”. To which I say – NO, it RUNS MUCH DEEPER than ONE FREAK’N play. You can also insert – “if the OL had blocked better”, “If the Defense would cover people or relearn how to tackle”, “if CMR can FIND A WAY to instill DISCIPLINE to his players – on and off the field”. YOU SEE – we didn’t LOSS b/c of one play, or one fumble, or one player. There are MANY opportunities throughout a ballgame that can be “game changers” – UGA USED TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT – but no longer. It all goes back to coacher. Year end and year out, UGA recruiting classes are in the TOP TEN – Something that GT would salivate at (GT is usually around 30-35 in recruiting classes) – but yet, GT seems to make better at the recruits they have than UGA does. IT ALL GOES BACK TO COACHING. You can have the TOP RECRUITING CLASS EVERY YEAR – BUT IF YOU CAN”T COACH THEM, IT DOESN’T MATTER.
That is why I say – for the first time, that CMR needs to go. It seems to me his BEST CLASSES were from Jim Donnen’s recruits.

Looks like we made a huge mistake with the defensive coordinator hire, and CMR has reigned in CTG’s emotions so he cant reprimand the kids. Too many times players standing around waiting on someone else to make the play. The defensive players and all the coaches looked dazed and confused. Dont know if it was the altitude or something they were smokin.

We may not win any more games this year. Vandy, Tenn, Florida, Auburn, Kentucky look like they will beat us. This could damage the program for a decade or more. Hate to say it but CMR seems to be in way over his head.

Wholesale change is needed. The program is the laughing stock of the SEC and is already circling the toilet.

Don’t forget that, until Richt came in, UGA hadn’t won the SEC Championship in years and his teams won it, his second year.

Please fire richt- I don’t know, I thought 2007 was a pretty good yr. too. UGA finishes %2 in the nation, w/ Richt’s recruits. Their record was a little bit better in his 2nd season…by about one game. They had a lot of close calls in his first time around though where the ball seemed to bounce their way. None of the balls are bouncing their way now. Sometimes that’s the difference between a win & a loss, or maybe even multiple losses. Jsut look at AU, AL & LSU already this yr. They’ve all been winning, but they’ve all had some close ones that very well could have gone the other way. In 2007, by the end of the yr., they were playing maybe better than anybody in the nation by the end of the yr. They were dominant by the end of the yr. I don’t buy teh him doing it w/ Donnan’s recruits theory, bc of 2007, & also they won the SEC w/ DJ Shockley as well, in about Richt’s 5th season…as well. I know this season has been really bad, but I would rather hope he can turn it around than to wish for him to be gone. even if it’s not this season. I would like for him to have at least one more to get things straighten out. I just don’t think the guy’s forgotten how to coach…even though it may look llike it right now.

Discipline!! focus you do not win games with out discipline and focus and Georgia is lacking in both. It seems like the offensive line can seem to hold up consistently, flashes of good play and one mental lapse after another. Defensively out of position and lack of discipline, Three personal fouls on one player and he is still in the game. After every losing game; should have, could have and other excuses seems to be the weekly game plan. You look at a program which seems to be clueless as to the direction it wants to go.

You want to play at the top level then you had better get focused and start playing like you know what you want to do. Instead of looking like you do not know what you are supposed do on given play on a Saturday.

You played a good game offensively. And you are installing the 3 – 4 defense which will take a couple of years to do. Just a fumble at the end of the game by a player trying to make a play when all he needed to do was kill the clock.

After watching a 4th string Wake QB shred the Jacket defense, and watching a defense that gave up 50+ points to Duke hold the GT offense for 59 minutes, we Tech people have our own problems. And for the present, how UGA plays ain’t one of them.

Lack of discipline. Lack of intensity. Lack of passion. Lack of heart. Lack of effort. Lack of quality coaching. Lack of intelligence. Lack of motivation. Lack of fundamentals. Lack of dedication. Lack of adjustments. Lack of deep desire to win. Lack of offensive game plan. Lack of carrying out assignments. Lack of discipline. Lack of obeying the laws of the land.
Lack of urgency. Lack of strength and conditioning. Lack of coaches that can motivate the players. Lacking, that’s what’s wrong with UGA. As Richt says, “Ah, shugs, we did the best we could”. “We’re sticking together”. “We will win another one before it’s over”. Mark Richt just can’t get the job done. Veteran offensive line, two experienced running backs, A.J. Green, a new high paid defensive coordinator and Georgia is 1-4. It all falls at the feet of the head coach but the head coach refuses to make changes. If Mark Richt can’t make changes and try something else …. he needs to be the one to be changed. With losses at Auburn, Florida and Tech (maybe Tennessee and Ky) … we will be 6-6 at best and could be 4-8. I don’t even want to think about going to the Car Quest or Pizza bowl this year.
We probably won’t even be bowl eligible. O, how the mighty have fallen.

“Losing is not good, but…” I’m tired of listening to this pansy qualify ugly losses to inferior opponents.
We need a coach that says “Losing is not acceptable.”. It’s a mentality that CMR has passed onto his players. Stop trying to build men of character that go to church every Sunday (FSU had problems with players landing in jail) and focus on winning ball games. Either demote Booboo back to a position coach or can him! I don’t care, because I think the biggest problem is the big softy at the top. College coaching is a game for bulls, and CMR is like Ferdinand sniffing the flowers.

Well, its easy to see whats wrong, no blocking, confused defense, and Green can’t keep himself in shape while he is suspended and where is the strength and conditioning coach, on the sofa? But the good news, they played more like a team; played with enthusiasm and with a winning attitude. Derick Dooley will have his team up and ready for his first game in Athens. Support the dogs and beat Tenn.

What a cruel joke was played on us. We have this ‘character guy’ coach that everybody (including the media) likes and he won a lot of games in his first few seasons and now we’re stuck with him or have to pay a fat buy-out. Florida didn’t tolerate mediocrity and gave Zook the hook, Alabama didn’t either and they sacked Shula. I miss VanGorder, every year we see more and more of how brilliant a defensive mind we had and that nasty, competitive mentality. At least he’s helping the Falcons.

In a Colorado-UGA final score update during the Bama-UF game, CBS shows footage of Colorado fans swarming the field. Announces that it’s Colorado’s first victory over an SEC opponent in 20 years. The second announcer disdainfully points out that Colorado just beat a “1-4 SEC team”. The tone of his voice, as he casually dismissed this “nationally elite program” will forever ring in my ears.

Murray looked great. Dumb penalties like roughing the kicker that gave Colorado a touchdown instead of a field goal hurt. Once again a running back FUMBLES to lose the game. UGA needs to recruit running backs that know how to hold on to the football.

I think Richt made a mistake in his new defensive coordinator. Those guys have no idea in what they are doing. When you have defensive back players playing the option inside out, you are in trouble. Corner backs usually have the pitch man on the option, and the safety takes up pitch support. Both guys went inside, I don’t know why, but by the time they turned around, the running back almost scored on a 60-yard run. Georgia is hurting on defense. I feel sorry for those guys, because those type of coaching points are not that hard to teach.

I watched the game and saw some good things. This team is average at best and cannot make mistakes. I saw UGA play more as a team than in previous games. I feel for the players as I know they are trying and things just are not falling into place. The defense is definitely undersized, especially up the middle, but that will change in a couple of years. This is a rebuilding program now and will experience further growing pains. It is time for the fans to accept reality and support this team. It will be a while before UGA is back to the top so in my opinion we can help more by support than always being so negative. This team could lose the rest of their games and if they do then I am sure dramatic changes will be made, but until that time we should support the team.

There is no bigger fan of CMR than myself. I think he is one of the finest men I have ever had the pleasure to know, but something has got to change. CMR HAS to realize that we are not playing with the fire of an Alabama or Florida, and there’s a reason for that. The UGA football program is one of the most financially successful in the country, and it is time we went after what we need. I, also, am a strong and dedicated Christian, but I have led successful businesses over the years and instilled fire and determination in my employees without denying my Christian heritage. CMR has to be a leader, and he has to be a leader with what I call “fire in the belly”. We just spent $750,000 per year on a DC, yet we have opposing receivers standing there wide open, not just once or twice, everybody makes mistakes, but every game we have witnessed an opposing receiver just standing there wide open, waiting on the ball.

When I ran a business, if my most talented guys didn’t want to perform, I simply helped the less talented become even better, but every business I built, I built a TEAM, and UGA simply does not have a TEAM right now. Again, I have never met a man who I admire and respect more than CMR, and I think he is good for UGA and the state of Ga as a whole, but if I was in his position, these so-called “Sunday Players” on our roster would be sitting on the bench, if I had to play the scout team. Something has to wake up this team and this coaching staff. An absolutely 0 tolerance for off field problems should be immediately instituted. You get arrested, you get dismissed, no matter what.

One of my special talents is to be able to take a very ynderperforming auto dealership and build a team that makes the delearship do 180, and I do that theough building dedication, trust, and teaching, and we simply do not have that at UGA right now. I have been successful at every dealership I have ever been to, and am one of the most sought after “car guys” in the business, and I donot say that in a bragging sense. I work 6 or 7 days a week, 10 to 14 hours a day, I don’t take vacations, days off, or let anything distract me from my task of doing my job. My wife and daughter understand, and support me.

The point I am trying to make here, is if the coaching staff, players, administration, and everyone else involved in UGA football are not willing to make the necessary sacrifices to make the big money the coaches are being paid justified, or the players the oppurtunity to play on Sunday because they are not willing to give all to UGA football, find some who will. I would rather have mediocre players who play with all their heart, than 5 star recruits that show up when they want to.

If UGA football players are Richt’s church then lets resign ourselves to understanding that the man is a pastor – pay him like one and forget good results in football. If he is a football coach then he ought to coach like one and receive the reward due a football coach.

However, if Richt is a pastor – he is not a very good one. 10% of his congregation has been arrested in the last few months. If he is a football coach – then he needs to go where he can win and be paid accordingly in another division. It is obvious that he is finished winning at GA. The last 3 seasons (including this one) have been disappointments yet we aren’t finished with disappointments yet this year. He has run his own program in the ground and his leadership is pathetic. This self-fulling prophecy of “things could get worse” is the poorest leadership I’ve ever seen. Let him go.

You can do all of the right things and good things you feel led to do but if you lose football games you are going to lose your job and have to be a role model somewhere else – I hope he can pull off the impossible and do both but it’s not looking like it right now.

Jim Donnan gets the boot with a winning record so why does Mr.Richt gets a pass? He at least won a championship at Marshall.

1996 Georgia 5-6
1997 Georgia 10-2
1998 Georgia 9-3
1999 Georgia 8-4
2000 Georgia 8-4

If they keep Mr.Richt they can’t justify for not given Jim Donnan time to build a championship team at uga.

What a list: An uncharacteristic miss of a short field goal by one of the best kickers in the game. A late fumble setting up what could have been the game-winning field goal. The return of perhaps the best wide receiver in college football this season, cut short by cramps.

Had any one of the things listed above gone the other way, Georgia has a win. The same could have been said last week. And the week before. Three or four plays, and Georgia is 4-1, not 1-4.

Georgia will likely lose to Auburn and Florida (but you never know). Tech is struggling too, and is a tossup. Kentucky, Tennessee, and Vandy should be wins, but again, who knows. Personally, I think the Dawgs split Auburn and Florida, and win three of the others listed above (along with a win over Idaho State). Likely record 6-6, worse case 5-7, best case 7-5.

Considering a RS Fr QB, a new defensive coordinator and scheme, and a jersey-selling receiver who took himself out for a third of the season, maybe not such a bad year. The question is, what comes next year? If the discipline finally sets in – and that’s the biggest problem in Athens, I think – then even without A.J., look for improvement – unless you change coaches.

Does anybody remember Saban’s first season at Alabama with the 3-4 defense? They went 6-6 including a loss to ULM. It takes time to learn the 3-4 scheme and coverages. If Richt can hang on for another season, the defense should be much better next year. And, hopefully the offense will be better as well since Murray will have playing experience (assuming Bobo is fired).

I’d love it if as many people were calling for Van Halanger’s head as they are Coach Richt’s. These players are not in shape. Period. That problem can be remedied in the weight room.

Last year’s two-a-days led to injuries before the season started. This year’s one-a-days are leading to players getting injured during the season and getting physically manhandled by cupcake teams like Colorado and Mississippi State.

The common denominator? A TERRIBLE strength and conditioning program. Have y’all seen the kind of monsters lining up for Alabama? I bet their biggest offensive lineman outweighs ours by 50 pounds.

I agree with you, UGAVIII. The 3-4 is a huge difference from the 4-3 and CTG just doesn’t have the right personnel in there right now (although his failure to adjust to work with what he has is, of course, frustrating). Just look at how players like Kwame Geathers and Justin Houston are doing in this system. I also think Boykin is slowly coming along under CTG and should be much better by the end of the season.

I also think the offense will be much improved, even by the end of the season, because it already is improving. Despite the bonehead fumble, Caleb King had a good game. Green looked amazing, albeit out of shape. Murray is going to be a top-notch QB. Even the line showed marginal improvement (although not as much as I think needs to be shown by this point in the season).

There are some huge minuses this season that are driving me and all Dawg fans insane: horrible playcalling, inconsistent play by the offensive line, blown coverages, bonehead penalties at crucial moments and poor performance in the red zone. I’m not saying this team doesn’t have a whole lot of work to do. I’m saying that there actually are some reasons to be optimistic and that we should focus on those instead.

The fact that a lot of bandwagoners on here are trashing all affiliated with UGA’s football program for not doing their job is just plain silly. The only job we have as fans is to support the team: celebrate with them when they win, stand by them when they lose. How can we criticize the coaches and players for not doing their job properly when we are not doing ours?

This season has been just as painful for me as it has for the rest of y’all, but I am a proud graduate of the University of Georgia and will be a proud fan of the Dawgs till the day I die. All I can do is offer them my full support because I know I have no impact on what actually happens on the field. Especially when that field is about 1,500 miles away in Colorado. I encourage everyone to show up ready to support the Dawgs in a crucial home game on Saturday. They need us now more than ever.

nmdawg, we used to be like that too. The game has passed Richt by. Football, particularly college football, is constantly evolving and progressing. Richt hasn’t progressed. The SEC is absolutey nothing like it was even 5 years ago. Look at Saban. I always thought he was a little overrated at LSU. Sure, he had that great 2003 team, but other than that he fielded a lot of mediocre teams at LSU. But look at him now. He has progressed. He has become a much better coach in my opinion. Richt has stuck with the status quo and has not tried to improve. He put this program on auto-pilot and the rest of the SEC has flown past us like we’re standing still.

Its time for Richt to go.

RGRDAWG

I agree with DawginOH. Strength and Conditioning is a common denominator for why the team is horrible.

Linemen getting manhandled
Fullbacks can’t knock anyone down
Running backs can’t absorb at hit (or hold onto the ball)
DB’s can’t play physical enough
AJ ready to keel over after a few snaps
Nike sells as many green jerseys to UGA as it does red jerseys

Here is a post from someone from Bulldog Blog last week. I thought it was dead on.

“Our Strength and Conditioning program is one of our biggest problems. We recruit some of the top athletes in the nation but we always fail to develop them physically. Look at our offense and defensive lines. They are getting blown off the line by teams that should be inferior to us. The fullbacks are resorting to missed chop blocks when they should be squarely blasting linebackers onto their backs. Our running backs, most 4-5 star recruits, can’t break the first arm tackle or hit they encounter. W. Ealey took a heck of a shot on Saturday and fumbled the ball. Do you think he would have fumbled the ball if he was physical enough to take a blow like that? I don’t think one of our running backs are what you would call a physical running back. It seems like King is always getting hurt. It’s not like they are the workhorses of our offense.

Hard hitting physical safeties and linebackers used to be the staple of our defense. Now the linebackers are too busy fending off offensive linemen because our defensive linemen aren’t requiring double teams. The safeties aren’t punishing receivers or running backs anymore. It is easier for them to run along side them and jump on their backs for a game of rodeo. We are injury prone year after year. That isn’t just a coincidence!

Anonymous 5:05 was dead on about what other coaches in the NFL and at other colleges are saying. “We are weak, fat, and out of shape”

I hate to compare other teams to UGA but look at Alabama’s S+C program. Scott Cochran has his team physically ready to beat their opponents into submission. The offensive linemen are driving defensive linemen into the linebackers. Their defensive linemen are clogging up the line of scrimmage. Even the receivers and cornerbacks play physical.

It doesn’t matter who is calling the offensive or defensive plays. If our players are all wearing green jerseys or can’t knock an opponent on his back then we will continue this path of mediocrity.”

He thought he had two great quarterbacks to only end up with one. He once again has a great receiver back who just wanted to go on Spring Break like all the other college kids do!! The NCAA needs to look at how the players who play their hearts out every Saturday and get banged up can also have the ability finacially to enjoy their college years. Perhaps some of you big mouths need to remember if you can what it is like to be a college student for the first time away from your family structure and what you did then. Please tell me all of you who want the coaching staff gone. Who wants to come to Georgia? There is no one out there who will come besides a mid major coach and that is taking your chance. You want to get rid of a guy who has won 91 games in ten years for a coach at Boise St? They play in the WAC, they have to get up to play one game a year and yall think he is some great coach, be careful what you wish for. For some of you saying the last play was a trick play and that you were at the game and saw that it was a trick play, you must have had to many beers in you, that was no trick play.
Bobo showed he could call plays with Green in the lineup but when he went down in the third it was typical bobo play calling run up the middle on 1st and 2nd and send everyone deep on play action or have an end around when we haven’t been able to run all night. Also bobo having thomas come in the thrid quarter when king was playing so good. Thomas was our third string running back to start the season for a reason, I don’t care how much king and washawn fumble they are still better than thomas plus thomas can’t pick up a block.
If there is a place for a change than it would be Bobo, if Richt is not willing to make the change at the end of the year then yes there will have to be a discussion about Richt’s future. Give him some time he has earned it over the years, and he earns more respect than what he is getting from his beloved dawg fans!!

October 3rd, 2010

The players appeared to be affected by the altitude. It takes at least a week to become acclimated to the lower oxygen levels at a mile above sea level. For players that have never experienced high altitudes, it is very disorienting both mentally and physically. Could explain some of the mistakes.

Even though Florida got their a$$ kicked by Alabama last night (after the first half Alabama shutdown/turned off their offense…it could have been worst), Florida will still beat UGA soundly. You are exactly right , we are being out coached every game.
We have to give Grantham at least a year to get such a radical change on defense implemented and learned by the players. Most of these recruits committed thinking they were going to play the 4-3. The 3-4 is a lot more complicated and the players have a lot more responsibilities depending on the offensive play that is run. I still say that if we have the depth , and that question still has to be answered, to have the 3-4 it is a great recruiting tool because most of the pro teams use a 3-4.
One thing that what help a lot is for UGA to play as many freshmen as possible. If these new recruits are ready there is no reason to red shirt them.

As much as I want Richt, Bobo, Searles and a few others out, I think Grantham has not had a fair chance at implementing his 3 – 4. So I’m with you on this. If the story is true that Richt told Grantham not to yell at his players when they blew coverages then Grantham’s hands are tied until Richt is gone.

I like the 3 – 4 and also believe it will help in recruiting. I must wonder at this point how capable our current D players are at learning though. Rambo is usually 5 to 10 yards out of position and has given up major yardage and TDs.

If Richt played Murray last year instead of Cox we would be doing better this year.
If Richt had put in new defensive caoches 2-3 years back like he should of we would be doing better this year.
If Richt had gotten a real offensive coordinator rather than an untried buddy we would be doing better this year.
Saban had Alabama on top of the country in two years Richt and Georgia is still second tier.
Richt hasn’t been able to push the program to the top in ten years, what makes you think he can turn it around now?

From ESPN: Georgia is in the tank: It’s official now. Georgia’s season is over. All that remains is to see how bad and how far-reaching the fallout will be when the games are complete. The Bulldogs (1-4) lost 29-27 to a Colorado team on Saturday night that was trashed 52-7 by California earlier this season…The good teams find ways to win. This team is finding ways to lose right now, and not even A.J. Green’s return could save the Bulldogs. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I saw one hugely selfish play by AJ

October 3rd, 2010
3:00 pm

Late in the game and maybe on the final drive ……….one of UGA’s backs went up the middle totally swarmed and carrying three or more Buffs with him. He picked up maybe 4 or 5 yds by pushing and pushing with three Buffs along for the ride. Now ………AJ ……. turned his back on the final two or three seconds of that play, knowing full well that the ball could be stripped and he might be there to recover. nahhhhhhh, He saw the pushing and pulling of the running back and turned away, walking in an opposite direction BEFORE THE WHISTLE. Yes, he had a great game but he is biding time so I say, turn him loose now. We can lose without him and he was not the game winner last night.

He will be booooooooooooooed at home next saturday and so will UGA when Coach Dooley comes to Sanford Stadium and spanks UGA badly in his home town. The alumni my age will go beserko with emotions at Dr. Adams. ALl kinds of anger will swell up and it will be directed toward Mark Richt. He for now ……….is clueless about this pending event.

Yes, fellow UGA alums …………it is gonna get far, far worse than it is right now. Is McGarity’s office on auto dial???

Go Dogs.

Look at the final few moments of the game ………I have not embelished this by one word.

October 3rd, 2010
3:11 pm

UGA can use negative spin on the 2011 recruits. They need to be told, yes there is absolutely turomoil surrounding this UGA coach. You are 100% correct. Whether Richt is here or the next guy, UGA has the resources to win and win soon. You can come and possibly play as a frosh like at running back and at running back and also at running back and lineman and lineman and linebacker and grow and work out and by your junior year, you will have built a name for your self like AJ did or No Show Moreno did after his active two years. The NFL will still be there.

They need to be told that in life there is no security ………it is day to day. That way in any endeavor.
Short of UGA turning to the triple option, why would any kid worry about whether his talents would be best suited under Richt but not under so and so??

They wanna play at UGA, they will sign. I for one am sick of these kids coming here that act like animals in the wee hours of the morning. Bobby Bowdon said it best about today’s athletes:

About 85% of his FSU kids had “no father around”. How one coach can get them to behave in beyond me. This is today’s student athlete. Pathetic.

UGADAWG 1978,

Using caps doesn’t compel the reader to take you more seriously, quite the opposite.

There are boatload of good coaches who would relish the chance of coming to UGA.
Yes, Smart and Muschamp are two. Derek Dooley despite losing, has looked better as a first year SEC HC than Mark Richt looks in his 10th year.

Even The (Very) Old Ball Coach, Spurrier would have this team winning with the talent we have had. His success at SC with little depth proves the guy knows how to put prepared players on the field.

This program has steadily deteriorated. Even a blind man can see it. Top recruits have been wasted for years in my opinion. But hey, if you want more of what’s going on then you continue to support Richt and Bobo.

By the way, did you support Martinez too?

Reasons to keep Richt – Murray, King, Ealey, Thomas, all our TE’s, all our Recievers except Green and Durham (big losses thought) return. Jones and Glenn return on the OL. Grantham is the real deal on defense, and we have another season under our belt learning the 3-4. Will be much better next season.

Reasons to can Richt – Penalties, Bobo, McClendon, Searles, Willie, Fumbles costing us 4 games late last year and this year and being Thug U.

I say we keep him 1 more year, see if he turns the ship around. I feel he deserves that. But Bobo, McClendon and maybe Searles? Can you say the hottest of the hot seats….Bobo better turn into Norm Chow or Bill Walsh to keep his job, if its even possible at this point to keep it.

At least McGarity is making us equal with Bama and UF in scheduling and no this lame brain national brand stuff of Damon Evans. You become a national brand by winning championships, not by flying around the country playing BCS folks while your opponents are playing Norh Texas ST. etc at home. We play GT non-conf already, that’s pretty stout. Bama plays Auburn as their grudge match, say they can schedule a Penn ST/Va Tech and still play 3 weak sisters of the poor. Ga. can’t.

Loyalty is to the program not to any particular coach, player, or team.

Does anybody ever analyze what went wrong, or ask tough questions?

1. My dead grandma knew Richt would run it up the middle with 1:56 to go, setting up for another Walsh miss from longer range than his earlier miss. My dead grandma. Colorado called timeout and ran a defense that just destroyed that play. That led to a fumble. A bad offensive playcall that was so predictable that it was destroyed. Fault? Mark Richt.

2. How in the world do you decide to take a delay of game penalty from your OWN 45 before a punt? Butler, who is slumping badly, didn’t even punt the ball to the opponent’s 20. That is freakish. That is bizarre. That is STUPD. Fault? Mark Richt.

3. How do you commit a roughing the passing penalty when you held them on 3rd down? How do you commit a roughing the kicker on a missed field goal? Those plays were critical. Undisciplined, stupid football. Fault? Mark Richt.

4. Conclusion? FIRE MARK RICHT.

I didn’t see the game either but followed it on game trax. From what I could tell our Def woes continue giving up chunks of yardage on run and passing plays and this from a team (CO) that has poor stats in both categories. BYU just axed their DC and GA should do the same. Week after week the def allows the opposition to score on their first possession. Unbelieveable. If you cannot change that trend then you gotta go. Scrap the 3-4 and dump the DC. He has not shown any improvement over the last 4 games. At least the Off has scored some points not withstanding the poor showing in the red zone. GA should of scored 2 more TDs but settled for FG or turned the ball over vs CO.

The only other teams on our schedule we have or should beat are Vandy and Idaho. The rest forget about it. The trend of crappy def and poor playcalling in critical situations will continue as most of us have lost faith in this team and its coaching staff. I’d concede all our upcoming losses to forgoe the embarrassment of having to watch it instead.

Mark Richt is a good coach, just not a great one. His weaknesses include that his leadership skills are not the best of the best. His offensive and defensive schemes are fair, but not the best of the best. His game plans certainly take plenty of criticism – as in how often do they catch their opponents off-guard in the beginning of a game. His ability to change game plans during a game or at halftime is very questionable. His ability to get his players to their peak in strength and conditioning is certainly not the best of the best. His management of his players off the field certainly shows that improvements could be made in this area as well.

Having said this, he’s not a bad coach. He’s just up against coaches and programs that are more passionate about being the best of the best and (here’s the part that is most important) have head coaches that have higher IQ’s than he does.

Other head coaches that are much more intelligent than him are addressing all of these areas better than he is. It’s not that he isn’t trying; it’s really nothing more than if he doesn’t have athletes that are a lot better than their competition. The Dawgs struggle to win because other coaches are doing just a little better in many areas than Mark Richt is capable. He’s a great guy with just average intelligence. Now that Richt doesn’t have the dominate athletes to win without the very best in coaching, it is starting to show.

Richt had better athletes than Colorado, and still couldn’t find a way to win. I don’t blame the athletes, I truly believe that average intelligence makes it difficult for him to perform consistently at this level. He’s a great guy doing the best he knows how to do.

The remaining concern is how much the last two+ years affect recruiting going forward – assuming he survives. Again, Richt is a good coach, just not a great one – and it’s really nothing harder than he is just not quite as intelligent as the very best coaches.

Georgia’s players need to look around at the next practice and realize the only people they can count on are their teammates. The grousing, etc. that is occurring all around them needs to put a chip on their shoulders and they need to support each other. That is why being a teammate is special.

No player has lost four games. Georgia has lost four games. No one wanted it to happen, but the players at practice are the only people they can count on to turn this season around. Look at the seniors. This is their last year. Play for each other and hold each other accountable. Finish the drill is a cute call, but the heart of a dawg is what we need to see. Bwell, blind loyalty is not support. Nothing ever gets fixed that way. You can hope all you want that things will get better but that doesn’t mean that they will. Everybody has a point where they stop believing and I’ve reached mine long before this 1-4 start. Maybe you don’t see it but our 1-4 record is the end result of an undisciplined poorly performing team that is poorly coached. And it didn’t just start last year either. I had problems with Richt’s/Bobo’s playcalling since they arrived in Athens. Winning just helped cover it but sooner or later this was bound to happen. Now the wheels have come completely off and there are still defenders who think we still have a shot at winning the SEC East. To me that’s just incredible. Richt’s failure to seriously address team discipline before problems arise and his refusal to deal with incompetent staff members who seem to misjudge the talent we recruit and then mismanage the talent we sign got us to this point. I like Richt as a man. But the University of Georgia was never intended to be a halfway house for wayward young men who just happen to possess athletic talent. And the distractions that those young men have been to our football program has added to these other problems. But the buck stops at Richt’s desk. You can’t give him all the credit for winning and then refuse to blame him for anything when they lose. He is the head coach and all the players and all the coaches on the team are there because of him. The buck stops at his desk. He is responsible and he needs to go and go soon. Georgia football did not begin when Mark Richt arrived. And it will not end when he leaves.

Demand drug testing for the entire team before they play.

Observations from a CU fan…Seems like you’re pretty hard on your players lack of conditioning. I think you are underestimating the effects of playing at altitude. In fact, it was kind of fun for us to watch your fans try to climb the stairs at Folsom Field and fit their oversized a*%&#@ into their assigned seat.

Thanks for the lack of respect, maybe we deserve it. Maybe y’all should get off the couch and cut out the fried vegetables!

When the going gets tough the tough get going. I hear these big shots with all their comments about what needs to be done. Most of them have never played the game of football in High School much less college. I know they have never coach a pee wee team either. I say to them sit down shut up and hold on. Coach Richt will bring the Dawgs back to greatness. Stop playing the blame game and buying into all the crap. Get behind the coach and the team. Believe me they don’t like where they are.

Why did you 100 yard rusher, averaging 6.7 yards a carry, was breaking tackles , on touch the ball only 12 times. The reason they lost is play calling. Bobo is lost on play calling. Caleb should have had at least 20 carries in the game. The defense is crap, but they do not have the personnel to run a 3-4, the d-line is a joke. The nose tackle is a converted d-end, weighs like 280. The nose should be 315+. But that has little to do with the tackling that has plagued UGA all year.

YOU people yelling about a flea flicker called have obviously never played football. King fumbled making a spin move to try and pick up yardage from a blitzing man off the edge who happen to come untouched! Geesh, everyone and their UGAMOM’S knew we were going to run the ball. My only complaint is throw a short, safe pass or screen there. Or to our steady handed fullback. It all starts with blocking and tackling, the 2 most fundamental things you are taught at 6 years of age on the football field. Get those 2 corrected for 4 Q’S and you won’t lose another game. GO DAWGS, Get to practice and work your tails off!

I am the biggest dawgs fan there is out here, but you negative people are talking like UGA has won multiple national championships. Last time I checked there was only one won. Think Frank Beamer had a few down years at VT? Go check the records. Let the man do his job and build a program. If you aren’t wanting to stay a dawgs fan, go pull for another team. But there won’t be any room on the bandwagon in years to come! Keep ur chin up and stop whining! GO DAWGS!

Did everyone miss Richt’s comment here? A DRAW play is what was called. Does no one else see the horrible strategy in that?

The game is down to seconds, you are within field goal range of the best place kicker in the country, if you kneel it you have a winners chance, so basically you are playing for 2 yards and a cloud of dust yards on the road….why the HELL would you call a draw play? Did Bobo think the CU defensive coordinator was expecting a pass? Was a delayed hand off giving time to our stellar offensive line to clear out the entire defensive to let King waltz to the end zone from 27 out?

Maybe I am just applying to much logic to game time situations. Maybe not so different to running out of timeouts in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half against Arkansas. Our players are a bit outmatched at times, but our offensive play calling is killing us. Our defense needs all the help it can get, and they are always on the field.

5 mouths to feed or not, you got to get rid of Bobo. If you can’t, then stamp your own ticket out the door because this is a slow bleed. We have just become Notre Dame.

My take on the team is that we need a true nose tackle that is the right size to occupy the center and a guard. This would allow the DE’s to get into the backfield and do their thing. Once we have that, the linebackers can do a lot more blitzing and cover the run better. Pressure is the key and we just do not have the horses to exert that pressure. Hopefully, we will have recruited one big ole boy to do the job at nose tackle. We could probably use a little upgrade at safety also, but it all starts with the boys up front.
On offense, I think our play calling is too predictable and vanilla. It appears that the other teams defense picks up our game plan through film studies. The head coach might want to consider hiring a true offensive coach and with the talent we have and our recruiting, we should do just fine.
I am supportive of the head coach but think, he needs a offensive coordinator. I believe that our defensive coach will be terrific after he recruits a few of the big ole boys he needs to make his 3-4 defense work. Alabama was not a whole lot of good when they first started using it as I recall.

Here is why you lose a football game. It is not because a player made a mistake that Richt is not responsible for. Richt is responsible for everything the players do. Regardless, this particular fumble was due to Richt’s highly predictable decision to run up the middle to set up a field goal. Colorado, I, and my dead grandma saw this coming from 1000 miles away. They blew up the play, forced a fumble, and won the game. Blame lies squarely and only with Mark Richt, who is responsible for the terrible, predictable playcalling (and why would you want to set up Walsh for a 40+ yard FG when he already missed one? Go for the TD. Go for the win.), responsible for Bobo’s playcalling, responsible for recruiting good players, and responsible for how they execute. Richt and Richt alone is responsible. Here’s what Colorado’s DC had to say on this horrendous decision.

From ESPN.COM:

During a timeout in the waning minutes and with the Georgia Bulldogs already in range for a game-winning field goal, Colorado defensive coordinator Ron Collins decided to turn linebacker B.J. Beatty loose on a blitz.

“I told him, ‘Let’s run it,” Beatty said. “Because we knew they were going to try to run the ball, milk the clock and kick a field goal. I knew I had the opportunity to come off the edge and maybe disrupt the hand-off.”

Lining up with the Buffs clinging to a 29-27 lead, Beatty was just hoping for the Bulldogs to run the ball, and sure enough, it played out exactly like he envisioned.

Beatty stripped Caleb King just as he got the handoff from quarterback Aaron Murray at the Buffaloes’ 30-yard line and he held King back while teammate Jon Major smothered the loose ball.
