UGA player: Game-deciding fumble ‘felt like death to me’

(Click here for Mark Richt’s post-game comments.)

BOULDER, Colo. – What Georgia players had to say after their latest loss, 29-27 to Colorado here Saturday night:

Wide receiver A.J. Green on being 1-4: “It’s tough. I’ve never been 1-4 in my life. We’re going to stay together, and we’re going to keep fighting.”

Green on why he left the game in the third quarter: “I was just cramping. A lot of cramping.”

Quarterback Aaron Murray on Caleb King’s fumble in final two minutes: “I don’t know where the guy [defender] came from. I handed the ball off, and it just came out. That’s pretty much how it happened. You can’t blame Caleb King for that. It just happens sometimes. You have to make sure you pick that guy up and he comes out and has a great week at practice.”

Murry on Green’s leaping, one-handed touchdown catch in the second quarter: “That was unbelievable. No other receiver in the nation can make that catch. That was special right there. To go up and catch it with one arm, and bring it down with only one arm, it’s pretty unbelievable.”

Defensive end Demarcus Dobbs on being 1-4: “There’s going to be frustration. We’re Georgia. We never expect ourselves to get four losses. Or lose to the teams we have lost to. We just have to push ahead, and we cannot give up on each other. All we have is each other. We have to watch film, keep grinding and finish the season out, hopefully on a high note.”

Dobbs on the mentality in the locker room: “We just lost a game. Everyone is pretty much down; we thought we were going to come in and ruin their party and get a victory. We thought we were a better team. We didn’t represent Georgia well. We didn’t represent the SEC well. Only people we have to blame are ourselves. We need to watch film, see what we need to correct and make those adjustments, and stick together. We have to be accountable for each other and not give up on the season.”

Dobbs on the fumble on the final drive: “I thought it was a shoo-in; that’s how comfortable I was [about winning the game]. I put my helmet down. I was ready to run on the field and celebrate. But it didn’t happen that way. We made a fatal mistake, and that type of stuff needs to be corrected. We cannot turn the ball over at the end of the game. It felt like death to me. We have to keep grinding and support each other.”

– From transcript provided by Colorado of post-game player interviews.

Until UGA begins to play like a team not a bunch of National Felony League (NFL) thugs, this will be business as usual for this pathetic program. No on one in this program has ever had a clue and UGA football continues to be the joke of all D-1 programs.

All these players do is taunt the their opponents and beat their chests regarding how great they area. Pathetic.

Maybe Richt can take the suntan lotion, after he is disposed of, and coach a finesse touch football team, because he wouldn’t recognize a smash mouth team if it bit him in the a$$. Oh, and after he takes that job, watch teams line up to schedule him, where they can take turns kicking him around like a bag of rags.

I flipped to the Georgia game (we could get it in Florida) during time outs of the Florida game. Georgia just seems to lack heart to me and the defense is not very good. I think Georgia will still get better, but losing to Colorado is embarrassing to Georgia and the SEC.

Now Florida…which embarrassed itself last night…..

Final score…..Florida 4 turnovers (2 leading to touchdowns and one preventing one) and Alabama 0 turnovers. Brantley was not ready for prime time…and does not look comfortable in the spread against a great team like Bama. But Florida’s defense is still very good. Bama did very little on offense (especially in the second half when the Florida DC…who is very good….made some adjustments) other than a couple of big plays and their defense won the game for them. If Florida can get their offense together…and I am not convinced they can at this point…..Florida has a good chance at a rematch with Bama in Atlanta….but no chance of beating them there at this stage unless Brantley is used differently (he is a pro style passer not a spread quarterback) and/or Trey Burton is utilized more in the spread offense as a quarterback. The Gators have real problems with who they are on offense….and a offensive coordinator who thinks John Brantley is an option quarterback. Brantley should not be asked to make multiple reads and pitches on running plays and then end up with the ball….which happened too many times last night. He should just hand the ball off or make immediate pitches to his running backs….and pass off of play action. He can not fit a square peg into a square hole Mr. Florida offensive coordinator. Also….Mike Pouncey is not effective as a center. He is an all-american guard…but an ordinary center. That position needs to be played by Robey, not Pouncey. Everyone can see that but the offensive coordinator (who is also the offensive line coach) at Florida.

You people wanting to fire this staff are morons. Blame the players. The play was ” the most basic in our offense” not a flea flicker. Idiots. Not only is our football team team one of the dumbest in the country, so is some of its fans!

So Bottom Line, if our current mess is not the coaches but rather the “dumb” players… then I have one question for you. Who recruited the “dumb players”? Surely not “smart” coaches, huh?

A ‘game deciding fumble’ is when you fumble and the other team picks it up and scores to win the game. UGA was on the 27 yard line. That is a guarantee of nothing. Over 40-yard field goal kicks are not a given. And PS: Tennessee had 13 players on the field!!! How really stupid is the SEC?!

I actually disagree with the juvenile remarks that are being made on this site. I thought the team played harder and i saw a slight improvement in aggressiveness. This Georgia team will get through all of this and will be stronger in the future because of it. Remember it was just 3 years ago that Alabama was losing to Northern Illinois. We are a tough luck team right now and have lost our winning edge. We will regain it. These fair weather fans need to zip it up and get behind the team. The program is going to be fine.

I keep hearing, “Finish the drill”! How about, “Start the drill”! I don’t think these gentlemen know what the drill is? For 3 years we have watched and seen penalty after penalty cost them in tight games. For the same amount of years we have asked this staff to do something about it and nothing happens. The defense looks worn out midway thru the 3rd quarter, maybe those two a days in the summer would have helped? At the very least maybe the boys would have been to tired to get into all the trouble they did over the summer! The bottom line is, OUR COACHES CAN’T SEEM TO FINISH THE DRILL!

Helpful hints for Dawg fans to help ease the pain.

10 other things for a UGA fan to do on fall Saturdays:

1. Mow the lawn. One more cutting should do it.

2. Go scouting for deer. Gun season starts in a couple of weeks.

3. Change the oil and rotate the tires.

4. Winterize the jon boat.

5. Check out the UGA clearance rack at Wal-Mart.

6. Grab a couple of vids at the Adult X Mart and make use of the Jergens.

7. Plant you a few rows of collards.

8. Sight in the rifles and give ‘em all a cleaning.

9. Clean up the clutter in the trailer.

10. Grab a case of Natural Light, sit under a big shade tree, enjoy the fall breeze, and just get smashed.

LOL!!!!!!! 1-4 LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFLMAO!!!!!!! You Dawg fans are complete IDIOTS… You’ve never been anything but a mediocre team. 30 years ago you won a NC, 5 years ago you won your last SEC Champ. You all have the mindset of an Ohio St or Texas or Oklahoma or Alabama or Florida. You should have the mindset of a Kentucky or South Carolina or Ole Miss etc… There is nothing wrong with wanting your team to be the best but why beat yourself up YEAR after YEAR? Lower your expectations or the indigestion will never go away. CMR has a better win percentage than Dooley, etal. The grass is not always greener… see Colorado Head Coach, Dan Hawkins. Hawkins brought Boise State into the conversation, Colorado hired him away because of it. How did that turn out?

Still a Dawg, I agree on the juvenile remarks, but its losers that tolerate losing that are the ones hurting the program and need to “zip it up” as well. This downware spiral would not be tolerated at other top programs so why should it be here? Being critical of the team or its coaches is not being a fair weather fan, it means they don’t like losing especially when you have a coach being paid over 3 million a year to be a top 10 team, not drop like a rock to lower echelons of the conference. This drop will hurt recruiting so just “how” is it going to get better? It will be a long and arduous climb just back to mediocrity…

Insanity…doing the same thing over and over again….. and expecting different results….we have become a team led by insanity…

WE are a very poorly managed football program….most of you readers..work for a company…led by a management team…you understand…..in the game of football….poor management gets exposed in the areas of:

Recruiting….and…. Player Development…..

Player Discipline….arrests….penalties…

Game Management…ie ..play calling…use of time outs…

Lead the program with passion…we have no passion

Our football program..like a company…that is poorly managed..in a very competitive field…will get whipped..by those programs..that manage the right details…

I think that annoying commercial about Scott Trades…is the UGA football program…
We are getting our AS… kicked by the “other guys”….

What a great day! The rudest and most obnoxious fans I come across are Ga fans. I love seeing them fall apart and the fact that GT pulled out their close game at the end while UGA wet the bed makes it even sweeter! That being said, your program is either moving forward or moving backward…which way is GA going? Unless Richt wins out, he should OFFICIALLY be on the hot seat. Meaning, unless he basically wins out and follows up next season by winning the SEC, he should be gone.

Flea Flicker debate…was it a FF or a simple missed handoff?

If it were a simple missed handoff the QB would have noticed it immediately and dove in to get the football. Since it was (in fact) a flea flicker the QB was back on his heals expecting a lateral back so he could step into the throw. They will tell you different – but this is reality.

Also…at that altitude (if the kicker can simply kick the ball straight) it’s almost an extra point kick as far as distance.

I think Coach Bowden tried to warn us before we hired Coach Richt, he said he was to good for his own good. I totally agree with that, he does not have the killer instincts that some of the other coaches have, they take no mercy. CMR needs to be a counciler some where and do what he likes to do help people, you cant do that as a head coach. And Bobo is just over his head, after watching last nights game you could see it written all over CMR face, they cant figure this out! I am not blaming these players, I am blaming the coaching, if they want to save their jobs they had better be working 24/7 before next weeks game!

There were times in my life when I can honestly say games like last night’s were “ours”. You just knew that Georgia would find a way to win….particularly and certainly against South Carolina, Arkansas ,Mississippi State or Colorado. You knew the defense would step up. You knew someone would make a play on offense or defense.

We had character. We had discipline. Most of all, we had coaches that players believed in.

Tom, Resident Georgia Fan

The coaches will never admit it but it was a flea flicker; Caleb’s spin around had the hallmark look of a back about to toss the ball back the QB. All we had to do was drive into position to kick a FG and win the game. It’s a true example of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

SmyrnaDog,

The staff recruited this bunch. So did Alabama, Florida, etc. They all go after the same players. This is the chickens coming home to roost. You can’t see it yet, but it is happening in Gainesville too. If coach Richt has an achilles heel, it is his softness on the kids. Maybe this episode will change him and make him firmer and more careful about who he recruits in the future.

I will give you one name. Dabo Sweeney. He took over for T. Bowden, took the same bunch of kids who were embarrassing Clemson with their antics on the field and instituited a zero tolerance policy on those actions. Clemson got better.

After his success the first 9 years, Richt deserves the chance to right the ship. Improve recruiting and change the culture of UGA football.

But you are right. It starts with recruiting.

It sure would have been nice to have all three timeouts even after King’s fumble. There was still 1:55 left in the game and three and out would have still given the Dawgs a chance, but due to wonderful COACHING INCOMPETENCE, we were left with one timeout…GAME OVER!!

It’s time for change.

Didn’t see a good replay but my first reaction was that it was a flea-flicker and possibly the worst call in UGA history. Even if it works it’s a bad call unless something was wrong with the best kicker in college football, who happens to be standing on your sideline in a two-point game. I guess you could argue killer instinct, missed one already etc., etc., but you also risk the interception and you don’t burn any clock. A spin move in the back field? Maybe somebody things we can’t handle the truth.
