UGA player: Game-deciding fumble ‘felt like death to me’

(Click here for Mark Richt’s post-game comments.)

BOULDER, Colo. – What Georgia players had to say after their latest loss, 29-27 to Colorado here Saturday night:

Wide receiver A.J. Green on being 1-4: “It’s tough. I’ve never been 1-4 in my life. We’re going to stay together, and we’re going to keep fighting.”

Green on why he left the game in the third quarter: “I was just cramping. A lot of cramping.”

Quarterback Aaron Murray on Caleb King’s fumble in final two minutes: “I don’t know where the guy [defender] came from. I handed the ball off, and it just came out. That’s pretty much how it happened. You can’t blame Caleb King for that. It just happens sometimes. You have to make sure you pick that guy up and he comes out and has a great week at practice.”

Murry on Green’s leaping, one-handed touchdown catch in the second quarter: “That was unbelievable. No other receiver in the nation can make that catch. That was special right there. To go up and catch it with one arm, and bring it down with only one arm, it’s pretty unbelievable.”

Defensive end Demarcus Dobbs on being 1-4: “There’s going to be frustration. We’re Georgia. We never expect ourselves to get four losses. Or lose to the teams we have lost to. We just have to push ahead, and we cannot give up on each other. All we have is each other. We have to watch film, keep grinding and finish the season out, hopefully on a high note.”

Dobbs on the mentality in the locker room: “We just lost a game. Everyone is pretty much down; we thought we were going to come in and ruin their party and get a victory. We thought we were a better team. We didn’t represent Georgia well. We didn’t represent the SEC well. Only people we have to blame are ourselves. We need to watch film, see what we need to correct and make those adjustments, and stick together. We have to be accountable for each other and not give up on the season.”

Dobbs on the fumble on the final drive: “I thought it was a shoo-in; that’s how comfortable I was [about winning the game]. I put my helmet down. I was ready to run on the field and celebrate. But it didn’t happen that way. We made a fatal mistake, and that type of stuff needs to be corrected. We cannot turn the ball over at the end of the game. It felt like death to me. We have to keep grinding and support each other.”

– From transcript provided by Colorado of post-game player interviews.

As the great Marvin Gaye used to sing “What’s Going On?’”. WE LOST to a team that is 90th in the country (Div 1A) in Passing Yards, 68th in Rushing, 96th in Points For, and 59th in Points Against, and LOST TO CALIFORNIA 52-7. WOW. CU has not won back-to-back games in over 2 years. But yet, I keep hearing UGA fans say “but we lost ONLY b/c of a fumble” or “we lost the first 3 games b/c we didn’t have AJ” or “we lost b/c Ealey can’t hang on to the ball”. To which I say – NO, it RUNS MUCH DEEPER than ONE FREAK’N play. You can also insert – “if the OL had blocked better”, “If the Defense would cover people or relearn how to tackle”, “if CMR can FIND A WAY to instill DISCIPLINE to his players – on and off the field”. YOU SEE – we didn’t LOSS b/c of one play, or one fumble, or one player. There are MANY opportunities throughout a ballgame that can be “game changers” – UGA USED TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT – but no longer. It all goes back to coacher. Year end and year out, UGA recruiting classes are in the TOP TEN – Something that GT would salivate at (GT is usually around 30-35 in recruiting classes) – but yet, GT seems to make better at the recruits they have than UGA does. IT ALL GOES BACK TO COACHING. You can have the TOP RECRUITING CLASS EVERY YEAR – BUT IF YOU CAN”T COACH THEM, IT DOESN’T MATTER.
That is why I say – for the first time, that CMR needs to go. It seems to me his BEST CLASSES were from Jim Donnen’s recruits.

I can’t turn on CMR and I definitely can’t turn against these Dawgs. None of these guys were recruited to play this defense, give it a chance. As for the offense…get rid of the line coach and put Bobo back on QBs. CMR is a coach to be reckoned with. Next year, with him leading us we WILL be SEC Champs! GO DAWGS!

ok folks…let me ask you something…has all the bashing of our football program, the coaches, the players, etc…helped this team get better the last 4 weeks…please someone tell me how much it has helped…I’m waiting…Does it help the parents of these young men feel better when reading the comments made toward our sons who are hurting more than you are right now…Does all the bashing help other young recruits see what a wonderful fan base we have when we bash and boo these young men for making mistakes in a game when they bust their butts throughout the year to play for the University of Georgia…I’m still waiting for someone to tell me how all these discouraging comments has helped our team get better…This is not an awful team, yes the record is bad, but instead of 1-4 it could easily have been 4-1 or 5-0 had some things gone the dawgs way..unfortunately it didn’t and all the bashing and negative remarkds will not change that…What this team needs more than anything right now is for the support of the dawg nation, and let the season play out…then at the end of the year, maybe everyone will get their wish and changes will be made…until then, try and support this team and encourage them…this team needs a win very badly and who knows that might just lead to better things down the road…One thing i will tell you is that your damaging words are going to have an effect on the recruits who are looking at our whole program…Its ok to be upset and and frustrated, everyone is, but things can turn around pretty quick in footballl…a few very talented players at certain positions can turn the program around…We have many of those type of players committed to the dawgs and many others on the fence…so lets stay behind the dawgs and hope things will turn around….If you really are a true dawg fan, then you will do that even if things seem lost right now..I know the players will not give up nor the coaches, so as fans that should be something we strive for also…go dawgs

I am sick about these losses but more sick about some of the “experts ” on this blog who are totally bashing the UGA players and coaches. If all of you are such experts then why are you not coaching for a living? It is certainly appropriate to have discussion about this disappointing season and what should be done to change, but the extreme negativity is getting out of hand. If you are true UGA fans as you say you are then tone it down for the sake of recruits. I am extremely unhappy with UGA’s performance too, but if you think the players and coaches don’t know that something needs to change then you are a moron. And to the Alabama fans who keep commenting, I have degrees from UGA and Alabama and I’ll take UGA with a loosing season ANY day of the week over Alabama. I don’t know a single student in the state of Georgia who would go to Alabama if they could get into UGA (or GaTech). So get over yourselves and enjoy your football team.

Brother, I believe you attacked me if I’m not mistaken. As previously stated, I think CMR deserves another year because I am appreciative of what he has accomplished in the past. Ok, I will not name names, as no one wants to bash their team, but the problems to me are obvious. I am older (59) and have never seen my bulldog teams as undisciplined as they have been the past 3 to 4 years now. We have had top 10 recruiting classes 4 of the past 5 years and the other year was rated at 16. We have great atheletes, but sems we have very few high character kids that are coachable and play with heart and passion instead of using UGA as a stopping off place for the NFL. All the arrest, selfishness by selling a jersey, a lineman who made one of the cheapest shots that would have outraged me had it happened to one of our dawgs, but then again I am outraged that one of my Dawgs would be so bush league. Fumbles at critical times, a kid with 3, yes 3 personal fouls in one game. Guys, this is a character problem in our team. I would rather have 2 and 3 “star” recruits that made up the true junkyard dawgs long agao that “brought” it week in and week out, and would run through a brick wall for Erk. I do beleive coaching is some of the problem and am afraid we have way over paid for a DC, and we are no better maybe even worse on defense this year. However, I think we are to caught up in “stars” when we recruit and we are not doing a good job at identifying the really good character kids with some talent that would be proud and know what a privilage it is to wear that UGA uniform. If Richt wants to coach and turn this around, I beleive he needs to find some of these kids with character insted of all these 4 and 5 “stars” that are gangstas, thugs and cheap shot artist…that is not UGA football, or at least it use not to be. I am older (60) but this is not the way UGA use to play. I would like to see a little class come back to my team.

The fumble was just the last chance. We screwed up so much throughout the game. We left so many points on the field it is unfair to put it all on the fumble. We had excellent field position time and time again and got zero points. That fact is more incriminating of our preparation and, thus, our coaching staff.

Not sure how to turn it around. Certainly better, more consistent OL play and not running Carlton Thomas into the middle of the line over and over would be a start.

Some of these problems are not quickly fixed; the fact we have stood by and watched this program slowly fall into such disarray can be put on the alumni and supporters. It has been as clear as could be, but we have continued to say ‘it’ll get better, CMR is a good man and hasn’t forgotten how to coach, this excuse and that excuse’. We waited 2 years too long to dump CWM and we have allowed other aspects of the program to take a pass for too long. Accountability needs to start yesterday. There is no reason why significant changes have to wait until season end to be made. Changes can be made without a big public ordeal, but significant changes nonetheless.

Bad luck? I don’t think so. I think we are just bad, period. We have mostly good, very hardworking kids, but the staff is not realizing the potential of the talent of the players, or the support of the institution or fanbase they have available. Good luck is when preparation meets opportun…

Blue..I’m glad you love UGA and think they can do better…i agree…but what do you mean by undercoached…don’t you believe the RB’s are taught to hold onto the ball..how many fumbles have led to our losses this year…The Rb’s are not taught to fumble the ball when they are hit…Our receivers are taught to catch the ball…how many are making plays like AJ when we need it…Do you think that Blair Walsh is taught to miss a field goal, especially at a crucial time in the game when that would have sent us to the locker room with even a bigger lead…I wont sit here and say that i don’t disagree with some of the playcalling at times, but the coaches can call all the right plays that they want to, but unless the players execute, then they want be successful…Yes i guess that has to be on the coaches, but if you really look at all the games that we have lost…any of the outcomes could have been different had some plays been made…I think people don’t realize that talent wise and leadership wise, this team is lacking what the bama’s and gators have…should we still be the Colorado’s and Miss State’s..we should, but this team doesn’t have the horses to be without one star player or able to make crucial fumbles at critical times and still win…I believe we are a few very talented players short…I believe that is what has changed the last 3 or 4 years..I just don’t accept the fact that Coach Richt has forgotten how to Coach…I remember at Penn State that they wanted to run Coach Joe Pa off and say he was to old and couldn’t relate to the players nowadays…well a couple of really good recruiting classes and all of a sudden he could coach again…My point here is that yes we should expect the dawgs to be competitive and i believe they have been, but for whatever reason the team lacks the senior leadership that i think is so needed…Maybe i’m wrong, and maybe it is all the coaches fault…Please remember where this program was before Coach Richt took over…I remember and it wasn’t very good…Coach Donnan was a good Coach, but was having trouble beating Tech…Coach Richt has a 8-1 record against Tech…Who will be the next savior of our program…and if changes need to be made how long will the next coach get to turn the program around…Will he only get one season..because that is what alot of people right now are saying our DC can’t coach and we made a mistake with him…How long does he get to get our defense to be a factor again..Everyone points to our recruiting classes as having been in the top 10 or what was it last year…top 20?…Who has been number 1 thru 3 for the past several years…Bama, Gators, LSU, Texas, USC…This is a tremendous year for the state of Georgia and if we get the ones we are after i think things will start to go forward again…but i agree the 1-4 start is probably going to be part of the equation for these recruits…I don know this that these recruits think a lot of Coach Richt and the dawgs coaching staff, they are not just looking at our record, but looking at playing time, the fan support, the facilities and the belief that they can be the one that makes the difference out on the field…go dawgs….

Believe me — Smart or Muschamp would be a disaster. We need Harbaugh or June Jones if we can lure one of them away from their current schools. Buy out Richt at the end of the year — no matter how much it costs. Did everyone see the lack of class by Derek Dooley after the TN-LSU game. Miles had to run him down going into the locker room to shake his hand. His interview after the game was pitiful too. I guess he didn’t pay a lot of attention to his Dad on the sidelines while growing up.

Georgia fashions itself a national power in the vein of Ohio State, USC, et. al., based primarily off one glorious three-year run 30 years ago with Herschel Walker (and some kick-butt years in the 1940s

Anyone that thinks the fumbled handoff was a flea-flicker is a complete moron. There was a Buff defender right in king’s face and he had to do the best he could to try and get a positive outcome which ended up being a spin move that resulted in a fumble. Flea-Flicker my a$$. As for CMR…you cant blame that fumble on the exchange on him..you cant blame the fumble on the Miss. St. goal line on him…you cant blame the fumble agaisnt South Carolina on first and goal on him either…CMR did not make those mistakes he is just the coach of the team that did. Everyone of those mistakes could have changed the game entirely. As for being out coached, well that has been the problem the last 3 years…Love CMR, but he is in the same position that Fulmer was 2 years ago…Im not saying he needs to go but i dont think he will have a choice…Plus keeping him might help us land that Crowell kid who could help our struggling o-line like knowshon did based on how good he is.

Hey What, one more thing, I see some of the techies having fun with our “problems”, and although I have some friends that graduated from tech and I’m not into the real hate of it all, the fact is we are so into their heads it isn’t even funny. They know that when the game times come against us that they will most likely lose. We have owned them in football since Dodd retired in 66, and even though they have had some excellent basketball teams they can’t beat us in Athens, and we hold our own against them even in bb, when we have played them in baseball over the past 15 years or so in a meaningful baseball game we always seem to win. Seems like they would need to beat us oh say 2 or 3 years in a row before they try to pull our string. UGA fans really should just laugh at these losers until they prove that they can compete and win against us more than just here and there. One thing I know, tech is and will be better with Paul Johnson, but UGA will be back in short order wheather with Richt or somone else and we will stay in the techies head until they can beat us consistantly or at least half the time, and truthfully, I don’t think they can do that. Even with Johnson we will still win 7 or 8 out of 10. Last year proved that.

This is a first for me posting my comments on an article. I had the pleasure of meeting CMR at a fund-raiser for a local Church in the off-season and remember thinking I hope this guy never leaves UGA. I never thought we would get to this level. I realize its the SEC and you can’t have 10 win season every year but to be 1-4 is beyond a bad dream. I will continue to support the team but I wonder if a guy like Jim Harbaugh would not be a bad option. As for the Tech fans piling on, I tell you what brag about your football team when you win a bowl game. Your coaching staff has a month to prepare for a bowl game and you guys get blown out.
