BOULDER, Colo. – Georgia center Ben Jones won’t play in the first half of tonight’s game at Colorado as punishment for a late clipping penalty in last week’s loss at Mississippi State.
Georgia coach Mark Richt and SEC commissioner Mike Slive conferred after reviewing video and agreed a half-game suspension was in order, UGA announced just before the start of tonight’s game.
“It was poor judgment on Ben’s part,” Richt said in a statement. “He feels very badly about the incident and has sent a note of apology to the Mississippi State player. I have talked with [Mississippi State coach] Dan Mullen, and he appreciated the concern and Ben’s apology.”
Jones clipped Mississippi State defensive tackle Fletcher Cox on Georgia’s next-to-last play of last week’s 24-12 loss.
In an interview earlier this week, Jones said: “There was a pass downfield, and I was trailing the play because I didn’t know if it was caught yet. I went to cut a guy downfield because I thought he might make a play, because the ball was still up. [The refs] said it was too far behind the play, and I shouldn’t have done it. At the time I really didn’t think much [about it], but after watching film, I now know I shouldn’t have done it.”

Did anybody think we had a realistic shot at winning that game? Even when we had the ball on their 30 in field goal range with just minutes to go, didn’t you think we’d find a way to royally F it up? I did.

Clay you are an idiot!! We all root for UGA to win, but it’s clear it’s time for a change in coaching. We cannot keep staying behind a coach who has completely lost the program. This team continues to find a way to lose by shooting themselves in the foot. Not just this year but the past 3 years. Look at how much better Tennessee and Auburn are with a coaching change. We need to do the same. Mark Richt is too nice.

Unbelieveable. A truely stunning season at 1-4. The hardest part of our schedule is ahead of us, and there is no hope to recover from an incredible four loss skid. The coaches have no answers, and the players don’t seem to care. I can’t bring myself to believe firing CMR is the answer, but he needs to be called in for a closed door meeting and asked if his heart is really in this thing. Meanwhile, I think you bag the season. Don’t fire Bobo until after signing day unless you can land a bigtime OC, and just ride out the storm. However, there are some people who need to be thrown off the boat come December.

I saw Richt smiling as troopers escorted him off the field. Really. It may have been only for a second or two…someone told a joke?? Whatever…there’s nothing funny about losing tonight to Colorado. Go back and catch the video as the field was flooded by Colorado fans. He was grinning…I don’t know about you, but I won’t be smiling for some time.

Much like the Braves, Richt’s luck has run out on him. If you all think back at how many games Georgia has barely scraped out a win against lesser competition or had a miracle play save them. Richt has survived on winning two SEC titles during relatively down year in the league (especially 2005) and catching fire late in 2007 and trouncing an overmatched Hawaii team. Has he ever had a dominant team with all the talent that ends up in the NFL? Nope. The 2008 season showed that the Georgia staff cannot coach talent and the last two seasons have shown that the staff can’t recruit OR coach talent. He lost the fanbase and don’t be surprised when donations and season ticket renewals drop drastically if a change is not made

RICHT “it could get worse”
well he is right on that because the economy of Athens is fixing to take a big hit after this loss. Tennessee will spank our arses I am sorry. Tennessee played on fire today. Folks we have stepped into a time machine and we have regressed back to the Donnan and Goff era’s.

Hummon, you’re right on. Heartbreaking loss tonight, but there were many good things in the game. It was exciting to see the effort made by the TEAM including the coaches. Tonight was Georegia’s time to lose, but all in all it was an exciting game. So many good, positive young people and efforts are made at UGA. It’s hard to read the rants and name calling that goes on here. Disappointment and other emotional responses to losses are understandable, but the vicious hurtful name calling is uncalled for and unnecssary .

We don’t we play one game with Chapis at tail and Munzenmyer at full. I’d feel better about losing if our backs had even a reasonable chance to graduate, held on to the ball, and knew who their fathers are.

For the life of me I do not understand what Richt and Bobo were thinking when they decided to try a trick play when Georgia was in field goal range and still had a good shot to win, in spite of their errors. Like a lot of the previous posters I wanted Georgia to score the touchdown rather than put Blair in the position of having to win the game by a field goal. Unlike last week Georgia played with a lot of heart but it was sickening to watch the players being robbed of their chance of winning by poor play calling. Something is VERY wrong when we lose to a team that got shellacked 52-7 by California. Under Goff or Donnan, we would probably have pulled it out. I’ve said this before – Richt is doing his best to turn Georgia into FSU North, trying to win games by trickery and finesse. That will NOT work in the SEC. It’s hard to believe that my high school alma mater has a better record at this point than Georgia.
