UGA adds Charleston Southern, Georgia Southern to future football schedules

Georgia has added Charleston Southern to its home football schedule for 2014 and Georgia Southern for 2016, UGA associate athletic director Arthur Johnson said this morning.

The Nov. 22, 2014, game will be Georgia’s first ever against Charleston Southern, while the Nov. 19, 2016, game will continue the Bulldogs’ trend of playing Georgia Southern once every four years.

Georgia will pay Charleston Southern $450,000 and Georgia Southern $525,000 for making the trips to Athens.

Both schools are Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) members.  FCS teams command payouts considerably smaller than Football Bowl  Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) teams. The going rate for getting a FBS team to play in your stadium without demanding a return trip is close to $1 million.

Georgia typically plays one FCS opponent per season.

Charleston Southern played at Florida last season and lost to the Gators 62-3.  Georgia is 4-0 against Georgia Southern; the teams played in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2008 and also are scheduled to play in 2012.

Wouldn’t you rather lose to higher ranked opponents? If I was Richt I would be afraid that loosing to these schools would be even more of an embarrasment. But then he won’t be here by then so why would he care.

Home and away for UGA and Oregon will do neither school any good on the recruiting front. End of subject. More of you guys here need an education. You simply do not know anything about these colleges and how they operate.

UGA plays in the top league and Oregon also wanted out as their league is changing. The SEC is big boy ball as UGA is finding out this year. Stay tuned.

UGA will be exactly like Florida or Alabama. We do play GT ( y’all are supposed to be fabulous right?) so that is our out of conference game. Afterall “GT has won the NC more recently than UGA” and they “have last year won the ACC” and “gone to the Orange Bowl”. Right ????

What is not to like about UGA’s schedule ???………….you techers cannot have it both ways. You are either good or you are not. Now, which is it? Maybe you all are like Charleston Southern like I said all summer. Which is it?

Go Dogs.

@ Mechabradzilla…GEORGIA isn’t talked about much on ESPN either…let’s just be real…when is the last time the Game Day bus rolled into Athens…Georgia is mediocre at their level of competition…they probably wouldn’t fare well in the WAC right about now…And let’s be honest…how many of you UGA fans actually went to UGA??? Or did ya just grow up likin’ the DAWGS cuz Maw and Paw loved them some dawgs when you’s was growin up…lol…Bump UGA man…how about having them recruit some players with a higher aptitude and some intellect…Athletes, not jocks…maybe if they thought more clearly, they could stay out of the penile system…BANG…Richt is toast this year…GO EAGLES…GATA!!! Oh, and Dumbo, at least Auburn is ranked in the top 10 in the FBS and Ga. Southern top 20 in the FCS…so no matter the level of competition a win is a win…maybe ya’ll will find another one this year…HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

SNOOKIE from the JERSEY SHORE has just signed a deal to be the new UGA VIII. She is perfect because she is DUMB, FAT, UGLY, and DRUNK. She can’t read, write, or wear good clothes and that makes her the perfect fit. The only drawback is she is a female. She is like all UGA girls that don’t care who she “GETS WITH” but unlike the UGA coeds Snookie UGA VIII will be fixed at the UGA VET school.

All major schools play two guarantee games to make the budget work. I don’t mind one FCS game and one game against a non-BCS conference school. It’s the third cupcake game that is disappointing.

The Oregon trip really didn’t make sense, but I would like to see it replaced with a quality opponent like Clemson or maybe a Chick-fil-a kick-off game.

I will say that when people compare schedules, they consistently ignore Georgia’s annual game with GT and Florida’s game with FSU. Just because they’re played every year doesn’t mean that these should be ignored. These are games against a quality OOC opponent. While I would like to see UGA play two quality OOC games, the reality is that most major programs only play one.

This is unfortunately in the world of the BCS the way to build a championship team.

Playing good games that are actually interesting to watch is good for the viewer bad for the parties involved who have lots to lose when they lose those games.

They are doing what thier fans ultimately say they want… building teams into championship teams. With guys leaving early, the only way to get game experience without suffering setbacks is to pay for wins.

If you’re simply a college football fan it’s the toilet. If you’re a fan of UGA… maybe you can be 7 or 8-0 by the time you have to play Florida and you’re guys may not be as beat up for the game.

I get the logic… it’s just means College Football doesn’t really start until October for most teams.

Y’all forget that CMR and Damon Evans were at odds over the scheduling. Did you ever consider the likely possibility that it was CMR that went to McGarity and asked for the schedule to be changed? I think that’s what probably happened.

Stairway to the SEC cellar

Someone mentioned it before on the 1st page that UGA has nothing to gain by playing Oregon. And you know what he/she is absolutely right, however they have everything to lose by playing it. I firmly believe that McGarity cancelled that series because he didn’t want to have to go to Eugene and get slaughtered (probably on national television). And you can say all you want about those games were 5-6 years away. That may be true but in the past Oregon has played quality OOC opponents and they continue to schedule them, hence thats why they look good nearly every year. Because they have done it before and it prepared them for what was down the road. They have LSU next year, Tennessee at home in 2013, and had Colorado (before they became a new member of the Pac 10) for 2014.

If I recall correctly, scheduling in the past used to be how McGarity is making it now. 3 OOC cupcake home games to pad the record, then the dawgs would usually breeze through the rest of their schedule until the Florida game where they would get raped every year because they hadn’t scheduled anyone decent to prepare them for later on in the season. But then again, they actually played someone decent last year early (@ Oklahoma State), got manhandled in every aspect of the game and still took it up the @$$ to the gators, so recently I don’t guess it really matters

I don’t buy that nonsense about fans clamoring for a coach’s head if he schedules a tough game or two. Georgia fans are smart enough to know that last season’s 8-5 record included a tough road loss at Oklahoma State. A 9-4 season that included a blowout over the likes of Charleston Southern wouldn’t have been regarded any higher.

Besides, games like Okie State give you a pretty good indication of how good or bad your team will be that season. Last year was a perfect example. The La-La blowout didn’t tell us anything about Georgia this year. The record says 1-3, but the fans know that the real record is 0-3.

You know, I never really was a Damon Evans fan but the one thing I did like about him was that he finally started scheduling tougher OOC competition. I thought games like he scheduled vs Arizona State and Colorado would give us a taste of what we would encounter in a bowl game that way there wouldn’t be a repeat of that embarrassment of a Sugar Bowl back in 06 where West Virginia just beat the breaks off of us.

Until an Athletic Director at UGA (and this one will last about 6-7 years) steps up and corrects the mess that is the GA. /FL game, a game which is always basically a home game for FL and a 15 hr round trip drive from Athens for UGA students, which meant I could never attend that game……….
then we will always be at a disadvantage to our biggest rival in the SEC East!!!!! An Ahtletic Director at UGA will never be a true leader until they correct the worst aspect of the UGA scheduling. Mr. Athletic Ditector, Make the GA / FL. game a home and away series and you will put UGA intoposition to win more SEC East titles and more appearances in the SEC Title game!

Billy Ocean

Dude, this game has only been played in Athens 4 times since this rivalry started in 1915. And if I recall correctly, Florida hung 52 on UGA the last time the game was played in Athens in 1995. If the Dawgs had looked any decent against anyone in the last 2 seasons I think there would be a legit gripe to move the game back to Athens, but since they haven’t those requests will continue to go wanting.

I hate paying to see the Ducks play schools like Portland State. Don’t you feel the same re. FCS cupcakes? Really disappointed that UGA won’t be coming to Eugene. And, why is it that you folks think that there’s no value in playing Oregon in 2015 & 2016. That’s plenty of time to get it together. If you think that the SEC is the only grueling conference, then check the OCC record vs. PAC-10. Not saying PAC-10 is better or even as good, but their OCC schedules are generally tougher and the big intersectional games are great for fans. Enjoy the blowouts.

Dawg Fans,
I know it stinks paying full price to watch these types of games but the formula works. It has worked at Florida for the past 20 years. Playing an SEC slate along with an in-state rival (GT or FSU) and a nuetral site game against each other is enough. This affords you a couple of tune-up games to work out the kinks. If UF had played any serious competition in the first 2 games this year then we would be 2-2 versus 4-0. It gives the coaching staff an opportunity to see what the players need to improve on and make some adjustments before they get into the conference schedule. Lastly, it gives you 7 home games every year which is a huge boost in revenue. Until we get a playoff, then this is what you need to do to make money and win championships. Look no farther than the UF program if you need any proof.
